Review: This new 45rpm single on Humble Action includes the original version of 'Musical Healers' by Hummingbird as well as a remix by Aryeh Yah. The a-side version is a nice twisted dancehall cut with some hot stepping rhythms that sound like they could well have been sampled by The Streets at some time. It's a future sounding cut even now with its sleek synth leads. It's a real trip too at over eight minutes long, and the remix is no less adventurous but has a more heavy low end.

Review: Detroit house hero Kyle Hall returns with his biggest project in some time in the form of Transmissions, a new double album on his own well-regarded Forget The Clock. All six tracks have enigmatic, functional titles and the music is as idiosyncratic as ever. Each one veers more towards techno than is Hall's usual style, with pulsating synth lines and tight, dusty drum tracks making for stripped-to-the-bones grooves. Later on, things grow ever more abstract with twisted acid lines screwing their way through the increasingly ragged and roughshod drums. These are perfectly imperfect jams from a master of the form.

Review: Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock sure did love to record music. The New Standard was his fortieth, four oh, album and not by a long way was it his last. It came in 1996 on the Verve label and is the sound of the great American musicians offering up his own jazz renditions of classic and more contemporary rock and r&b tunes. The star-studded sextet also features saxophonist Michael Brecker, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Dave Holland, percussionist Don Alias and drummer Jack DeJohnette with some of the original tunes by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Prince, Kurt Cobain and Stevie Wonder.

Review: Hansson & Karlsson only ever recorded themselves playing with Flasket burnner's Bengan Dalen once, and this Crescendo 1968 album is the result. This is the first of two such volumes and is a gem that has been discovered in the vaults. It was recorded at Club Cresendo at the Art Museum in Norrkoping and finds Dahlen on violin and the setlist features well-known classics next to some more newly discovered pieces that have never before been available on record. A fine bit of niche but nice Swedish jazz history.

Review: Second time around for the late, great Rai Harakami's second album, Opa*q, gets the reissue treatment. It's long been tricky to source outside of Japan and for whatever reason has not been issued in any form since it first surfaced in 2009. It's an attractive and at times off-kilter blend, with Harakimi mixing and matching ambient textures and enveloping electronic soundscapes with jazzy keyboard solos, quirky grooves, madcap post-techno acid lines, IDM and break-core style beats, and the kind of squelchy and tactile synth motifs more often associated with boogie albums made in the 1980s. It feels pleasingly lo-fi, too, as if a writer of 1980s and early 90s video-game soundtracks had made an electronica album. This edition also includes fine remixes by Ian O'Brien and Max 404, plus two hard-to-find bonus cuts.

Review: The late Rei Harakami was a vital force in Japanese ambient electronica around the turn of the millennium, and his catalogue of works continue to be a source of intrigue and exploration for seasoned listeners as much as new arrivals. Colors Of The Dark was originally released in 2006, and features Harakami exploring strikingly elegant, undulating tones with a gallery-like crispness to the overall sound field. He also worked with Ikuko Harada on the track 'Yami Wa Hikari No Haha'. Rings has been committed to reissuing much of Harakami's music, and after the sought-after 2015 vinyl pressing of Colors Of The Dark became unobtainable again so quickly, it was high time for a new edition to be released so the music might reach more eager ears.

Review: Those with their ear to the drum & bass underground will know that Hugh Hardie has been dropping slick tunes on Hospital Records for many years. The Cambridge-raised producer made a move to Solvent Records recently though and now is back with his third album, Jukebox. It is his best yet with early singles 'Blush' featuring Zara Kershaw and 'Face Off' with PAV4N of Foreign Beggars already winning plenty of plaudits. He shows his widescreen sound off in all its glory here - there are soul drenched rollers, lush vocal tunes and collaborations with the likes of Footsie, Degs, Killa P and more.

Review: Jack Harlow really seemed to break through with his last album Come Home the Kids Miss You in 2022 and now the American is back. He has plenty of flack for being a white kid rapper but for us that is way off the mark - he has some serious skills in terms of delivery but also world play and lyrical wit. The last album was a youthful one full of crushes, partying and the pressures of being someone. This new album is frustratingly short but chock full of soulful loops and boom-bap beats that keep you coming back for more. Lyrically he engages with social issues and his own place in the rap game while addressing the wider issues of hip hop appropriation. We love it.

Review: An Evening With The Devil is regarded as one of the Tribe Records label's finest ever releases - an unrestrained free jazz expression from Wendell Harrison that is packed with forward-thinking grooves. The Detroit reedman was always in a class of one and he showed it here with a record so heavy it was way ahead of its time. Now though it's regarded as a classic with trumpet from Marcus Belgrave, Charles Eubanks on keyboards, Ike Daney on drums, and Will Austin on bass. Review: Mick Harvey has collaborated with Mexican artist Amanda Acevedo on a series of duets that make up this new album, Phantasmagoria in Blue. The 14 tracks have been taken from a mix of already existing duets, songs that were not duets, as well as some translations from Spanish and one of two original new pieces. The themes running through out it are common to us all - mortality, love and our endless, hapless search for meaning. The resulting record plays out with lush melodies and lots of richly emotional sounds that provoke plenty of thought and reflection.

Review: Brainfeeder looks back to Japanese hybridist Hakushi Hasegawa's first album Air Ni Ni here and reissues it on limited grey marbled vinyl. Although on the surface it might be thought of as pop, get in between the beats and you will find a challenging record that fused everything from bubblegum pop to breakcore, prog jazz to video games and much more besides. The record first came in 2019 and remains astonishingly diverse and new in the way it mashes up traditional genre boundaries and draws on alt-rock. Fans of label head Flying Lotus are sure to love it as is anyone who heard it first tie round.

Review: This is a special audiophile vinyl version of Live Improvisations, an album featuring two sides of music, one the response to the other. The A-side is a recording of a 2014 session between Hakobune and Chihei Hatakeyama that was made with the colours of autumn and rural Japan in mind. Both of these artists have composed dozens of works that have established them as leaders in their field and this is no different. On the flip, zake and From Overseas craft 'Live Improvisation II' and 'forge an intercontinental bond' as they recorded the music in one take with no editing afterward. It's a gorgeous listen that shows a real mastery of tone and texture.

He dropped his debut release via Stones Throw in 2008 and since then has put out four more albums and picked up plenty of critical support as well as radio plays across the world. For All Time is his fifth album and one that crosses even more musical boundaries than before with lyrics that explore "the complexities of love and the raw emotions that accompany it." It is dark, brooding, erotic and stylish with hints of 1920's jazz club to it. A great return. .

Review: The latest addition to the catalogue of Swiss label, Second Thoughts, John Haycock's Dorian Portrait is a striking fusion of jazz and ambient. Showcasing Haycock's Kora specialism - the 21 stringed instrument that has its roots in West Africa - this is an impressive debut studio album from the Manchester-based artist. The opening track, 'Mykes', fans out onto a rippling melody where the plucked strings of the Kora melt into the twin tones of Haycock's electronic components, striking an intriguing balance between a sound that feels age old yet resolutely new. Another standout track, 'Dissolution', grows out from a more prominent bassline, like a plant pushing through soil - leaves unfurling, stretching out towards the sun. This is a beautifully reflective album for quiet introspection and shared listening alike.

The lesser-known and rather 'mythical' funk and soul outfit only penned seven cuts for this one but they sure made a splash with it. Members include Jimmy Soul, Ron Carr and John True and they have a tight funk sound as shown here with the steamy and sexy vocal whispers of the opener across a cover of a Barry White classic and more.

Review: Commonly regarded as the first official release from avant-garde prog/space rock outfit Heldon; Electronique Guerilla (also known as Heldon 1), served as a pioneering piece of studio experimentation and manipulation, utilising a myriad of guitar effects, tape delay and electronics, collated together by the genius of Richard Pinhas. Building the pieces from a Schizo (the earlier incarnation of Heldon) track together with solo guitar loops and electronic works, while warping elements from another collaborative cut with guitarist Alain Renaud, the fruitful, cosmic, proto-wave machinations are often credited as some of the earliest influences from King Crimson's Robert Fripp (who Pinhas cited as a major influence and master of the guitar) and Brian Eno, yet while in no way shying away from their inspirations, Pinhas has since specified that "Heldon 1 was released in '74 at the same time Muff Winwood released the first Fripp & Eno", so while similarities and comparisons are welcome, more attentive ears should be able to extract the nuanced differences with which Heldon crafted their hallucinatory, boundary-pushing early opus. Originally released on Pinhas' own Disjuncta Records and limited to 1000 copies, this long overdue reissue won't stick around anywhere near as long as these swelling brain-pieces.

Review: We all know that Matthew Herbert is a far out sonic experimenter who will look to make music with and from anything. But this project might be his most outlandish and extraordinary to date. It starts with him looking for the largest possible animal skeleton to explore though music. He settled on a full size horse and from that made flutes from its thigh bones and bows from ribs and hair. Gut strings stretched over the pelvis feature in the mid-section and even more bizarre than that is the fact he travelled to ancient cave paintings of horses in Northern Spain to record reverb at their door. Brilliantly bonkers as ever.

Review: Jazz heads might well be familiar with the name of Herbie Nichols Trio these days but during his playing career, he was far less celebrated outside hardcore circles. The American pianist sure had a unique style and deserves to now have more recognition for his work, which he will get as Tone Poet - Blue Note's reissue arm - serves up a repress of his innovative self-titled mid-1950s release on the label. Max Roach is on drums for this one with bassists Al McKibbon and Teddy Kotick and the whole thing has been remastered from the original analog tapes so it has never sounded better.

Review: Call on the old Wise is a magnificently captivating solo album that was largely improvised in the moment. It finds pianist Nitai Hershkovits delivering some of his best work as he draws on a wide array of influences that go from his extensive work in the jazz world to more cutting-edge and contemporary explorations via plenty of his own personal classical music experiences. In it, there's a great balance of light and dark, heavy and more airy as well as rich arrays of colour and timbre. This latest album takes us to the reggae sounds of Libya and specifically the work of Ibrahim Hesnawi, who is known amongst those who know as "The Father of Libyan Reggae." Review: Honest Jon's assembles a crack team of dub heads here for an experimental foray into the outer edges of the genre. Holy Tongue kicks off with three versions of 'Dey Sey' with its darkened electric and soot black dub sounds echoing through a desolate urban landscape in the dead of night. Beatrice Dillon's '2020' then takes a totally different approach with icy and glistening synths over more stripped back and crisp rhythms and percussive patterns and then there is a tribal approach to Caprices mix of Lamin Fofana while Itinerant goes for something more cosmic and airy. Review: Within a few moments of a famous film score - or at least one that made an impact on you - scenes and even lines not heard in years come flooding back. And the recollections of the atmosphere in the cinema as the opening credits began. When James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic first hit big screens it was a very different time for movies, and theatres, one that seems remarkably simple compared with today's multi-platform, pre-release buy-in chaos. Simply put, the flick was seen by pretty much everyone, which is rarely the case now, and as such the typically emotive soundtrack, particularly the orchestral sections, will have made an impact on everyone of and over a certain age. First returning us to the glamour and wonder of that ill-fated ship, then the drama and desperation that defined its demise, and the death of an all-too-short love, listening now makes it clear how crucial the tunes and songs were. From the unbridled joy of 'An Irish Party in Third Class', to the somber reflection of 'Nearer My God To Thee', it's the stuff of epics.

Review: .Hollywood heavyweight James Newton Howard has turned his hand to a wide variety of movie soundtrack styles in his tenure as one of the go-to names for Hollywood scores. Allow us a moment to reel off the names, or a few of them at least: Pretty Woman, The Fugitive, Space Jam, The Sixth Sense - a list that could go on, and on, but you get the point. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sits at the more pomp and ceremony-filled end of things, epic classical overtures that invoke a sense of adventure, overcoming adversity, mild peril and inner strength. Even when heard without the visual accompaniment of the film itself you can't get away from those feelings, making for a rousing and compelling listening experience.
