Space Date (12")
Cat: DC 193. Rel: 12 Sep 18
  1. Space Date (6:38)
  2. Rome Future (7:10)
Review: Drumcode head honcho Adam Beyer and Chicagoan legend Curtis Jones (aka Green Velvet) had discussed writing music together for a long time. Also, Beyer's protege Layton Giordani had admired the mohawked Jones' work for as long as he could remember. When he got to DJ alongside him at Belfast's Shine - the spark and subsequent friendship was immediate. The outcome of this respected trio's musical journey comes in the form of "Space Date" which will be familiar to many who've followed their sets over recent months. Featuring a relentless main room stomp with steely hats and droney synth leads, all accompanied by Green Velvet's trademark vocal delivery. The thunderous peak time energy of "Rome Future" is likewise guaranteed to rock the house - that killer Reese bassline particularly is sure to blow the doors off!

FER 312 (180 gram silver coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: FER 312. Rel: 28 Jan 19
  1. Peace For Thought (8:02)
  2. Archipelago (7:33)
  3. Finches In Flight (5:19)
Review: Russ Gabriel returns to Ferox with another round of classy, thoughtful techno excursions that point to his decades in the game. "Peace For Thought" stretches across the A side, its forthright rhythm section carrying an elegiac line in synth work. "Archipelago" is a snappier, Detroit-tinted workout defined by its catchy organ leads. "Finches In Flight" sends the B2 tripping off on a downtempo selection crafted with the chillout room (or some other non-dancefloor situation) in mind, and sounds utterly magnificent with it. Once again Gabriel proves his deft touch as well as his diversity on this sterling new entry in the Ferox canon.

  1. A Sagittariun - "Proof" (7:11)
  2. Gilbert - "Polynoid" (6:14)
  3. Sean Dixon - "Our Love For Music" (5:57)
Review: The Innate label made a sizable impact with its first release - a killer various artists 12" with Mark Hand, Lerosa and others. Now it returns with another balanced mix of established and emergent artists, leading in with a stunning A side cut from A Sagittariun delivering what might be his most beautiful production to date - a swooning, snaking slice of melodious techno that brims with emotion and canny programming. After turning heads on the first Innate release, Gilbert returns with "Polynoid," a punchy, Lately bass-powered workout with lashings of Motor City soul heaped on top. Sean Dixon completes the package with "Our Love For Music," a pointed machine mantra that maintains the classic techno tone Innate is shaping up as its MO.

  1. Gus Gus - "Your Moves Are Mine" (Sanasol remix) (9:24)
  2. Thor - "Black" (7:32)
  3. Biogen - "Stream" (Sanasol Lost In Time remix) (6:39)
Review: Next up on the ever-excellent Oscillat is "Spellbound" by the supremely talented Matthew Dekay. This moving deep house jam uses a few key elements to make a soul-stirring confection for truly spine-tingling moments in the middle of the dance. From the slithers of vocal to the insistent key riff that bounces throughout, this is an outstanding slice of contemporary house music loaded with feeling. Mandar then take the original and inject it with a feisty peak time energy shot through with a little trancey magic and an acidic undertone. It's not a raging beast but rather an energizing workout for the brain and the body - just what you need in the midst of a marathon.

  3. Mono Junk vs Goner - "Later On" (5:28)
  4. Mono Junk vs Goner - "Fj" (5:42)
Review: Given Finland's iciness and eternal winter darkness, it makes sense that the Scandinavian nation should be host to some top-notch electro and techno talent. Here, one of the country's first underground electronic stars, '90s survivor Mono Junk, goes head to head with fellow Finns Morphology and sometime Hospital Productions noisenik Goner. Morphology hook-up "Electro Por Favor" is a deliciously dystopian affair, with doom-laden spoken word vocals and minor key melodies bubbling away over a typically punchy beat. It's accompanied on the A-side by Mono Junk's own "Dub" version, which is altogether weirder, fuzzier and apocalyptic. Flip for two Goner collaborations: the drowsy and creepy throb of "Later On", which boasts distinctive dark-wave tendencies, and the old skool '80s hustle of sparse funker "Fj".

  1. New York City To Amsterdam (6:48)
  2. Enter The Stratosphere (6:42)
  3. Body Language (6:22)
  4. Black Mirror (7:38)
Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his all-star collaboration with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet, "Space Date", Layton Giordani returns to Drumcode with his first fresh solo material since 2017. All four tracks are formidably floor-friendly in the "big room techno" style that has turned the Drumcode crew into global stars in recent years. Giordani begins with the tribal drums, atmospheric chords, acid stabs and bleeping synth melodies of "New York City To Amsterdam", before doffing a cap to Italo-disco on the electro-techno chug of "Enter The Stratosphere". Over on side B, "Body Language" is an angular, acid-fired peak-time thumper, while closing cut "Black Mirror" sees him fix gated, trance style riffs to a typically throbbing, bass-heavy techno groove.

  5. Chant (3:15)
  6. In The Wreck Room (4:57)
  7. Many Gods, Many Angels (3:48)
Review: Sometime PAN regular and UIQ head honcho Lee Gamble pitches up on Hyperdub with what the label says is the first of a three-part "sonic documentary" that "loosely explores three stages of 'Semioblitz' - the aggressive onslaught of visual and sonic stimuli of contemporary cities and virtual spaces". What's most exciting about "In a Paraventral Scale" is the sheer scale and quality of the music. Gamble is in fine form throughout, from the gentle, Boards of Canada-ish IDM of "Folding" and hybrid orchestral/electronic sweep of breathtaking opener "Fata Morgana", to the skittish, automotive energy and fizzing synth lines of "In The Wreck Room", and the almost ecclesiastical lament of closing cut "Many Gods, Many Angels". In a word: stunning.

Review: For its seventh release, southern Italians Obscura Music return to welcome exciting new talents and core label acts. Head honchos Agents Of Time venture down an electro route with "East Coast", as do the ever impressive London Modular Alliance on the hypnotic "Buck One". Man of the moment Aussie Jensen Interceptor channels classic Drexciyan aesthetics on "Manix" before homeboys and label staples Hiver come through with the slinky and hypnotic tech house of "Stasys" and Detroit veteran Kris Wadsworth makes a surprising appearance with some slow burning minimalism displayed on closer "Abroad".

Cat: TEX 09. Rel: 21 Jan 19
  1. The Phase
  2. Vari Tube
  3. Slam Dunk
  4. Dons Slide
Review: Aubrey's Don Gardon alias was a one-shot decoy deployed in 1997 with the now highly sought-after "Textures" 12" on Aubrey's own Textures label. While the provenance of these new tracks is a little foggy at this stage, what you can be sure of is the grade of techno we're dealing with here. Aubrey's illustrious career speaks for itself, and so do these tracks in the first Textures release since 2001. "The Phase" is an effervescent, funk laced race to the stars, while "Vari Tube" takes a more intimate route through dusty house that wouldn't sound out of place in the Workshop stratosphere. "Slam Dunk" is a cheeky, jazzy affair while "Dons Slide" gets a little more freaky and far out in the finest tradition of B2 tracks.

  5. Myako - "La Jungla Encantada" (4:24)
Review: Grooveboxx is a new label launched from the Parisian underground with a focus on fresh, invigorating rhythms with an outernational focus. The label's leading lady Myako opens this first 12" up with the dynamic, dusty adventure of "Salvia Cosmica", which makes for the perfect scene setter before Aleqs Notal throws down a tougher set of tumbling tribal drums. Myako then returns with "La Danza De La Risa", another subtle, poised and tantalizing rhythm track, before Geena trips things out on the heavy effects bliss out of "Selva Spirit". Myako's closing statement, "La Jungla Encantada", is a spaced out affair marked by Spanish speech and fragmented rhythmic hiccups - a cinematic end to an evocative release.

  3. Cignol - "Chorus Envy" (5:06)
  4. Jared Wilson - "Toughskined" (4:30)
Review: A fine example of Pan-European collaboration here, as the Brighton-based Furthur Electronix label buddies up with Berlin stable Libertine Records for a very special joint release. Shad T. Scott kicks things off (under his now familiar Gosub alias) with the deep, sparkling and picturesque electro shuffle of "Take Your Time", before ACEW + Ghost Ride layer spacey, minor-key synths over skittish drums on the rather fine "Mind The Gap". The quality threshold remains high on side B, where Cignol's inspired, acid-flecked electro workout "Chorus Envy" - which to these ears is as rush-inducing as any similarly melodic early Orbital record - is followed by the stomping, fuzz-fuelled lo-fi techno thump of Jared Wilson's "Toughskined".

Review: Although largely unknown outside of underground electro circles, Mark Kastner AKA Galaxian consistently serves up some of the most on-point experimental and club-focused electronic music around. It's a bold claim, for sure, but one that's backed up by the high quality tracks showcased on the Scottish producer's first EP for Natural Sciences. A-track "Golden Armageddon", for example, is a thrilling, nine-minute electro ride that brilliantly alternates between sweeping, cinematic style melodic movements and fizzing, acid-fired sections that are more intense than a late night beating from a far-right thug. Elsewhere, "Ride The Spiral" joins the dots between Drexciya, early UK bleep and weirdo IDM, while dystopian closing cut "Psychic Purification" is a Rephlex style "braindance" monster.

  4. Delayed Cycles 08 (7:12)
Review: Good news for all those who enjoyed the Basic Channel and Echospace style dub techno hypnotism showcased on Gradient's "Delayed Cycles" EP: six months later, he's served up a seriously good sequel. Intriguingly, opener "Delayed Cycles 05" is surprisingly joyous and jazzy - by dub techno standards, at least - with jaunty riffs and deep space electronics dancing atop a metronomic rhythm track. You'll find more delay-laden, ear-pleasing lead lines on the slightly more up-tempo bump of "Delayed Cycles 06", while "Delayed Cycles 07" dives deeper in search of intoxicating early morning thrills. Arguably best of all, though, is "Delayed Cycles 08", which pairs bolder, warehouse-friendly melodic refrains with chunkier, crunchier drums.

His new new thriller comes courtesy of the ever reliable Suara label - and he lunges straight for the jugular on this fierce new offering. Kicking off with the barrelling intensity of "Peras Cosmic" which reaches near acid moments,, this is followed by the hypnotic sonar pulse of "19 Caracteres" (which calls to mind the work of legend Sleeparchive) and on the flip we have label staple Coyu - who delivers a right punch with his remix of "The Draft" which is as steely and austere as you like it.

Review: Roza Terenzi has had a head-spinning past 12 months, notching up a wave of high grade electro releases on labels like Oscillate Tracks, Butter Sessions and Dekmantel. Now she's debuting the Gloworm alias on start up concern Sides, and sounding as vital as ever as she delves into deviant jack tracks dripping with tripped out FX processing. "One Ten" has a slow and nasty acid vibe to it, with a groove that rolls with ease and wobble bass wielded to perfection. "One Twenty" has a more brittle electro bent to it, while "One Thirty" pumps things up to a more peak time flavour of machine funk. As you might have guessed by now, "One Forty" takes things even higher til you're flying at ghettotech levels - Terenzi sounds utterly on point so select with confidence, whichever tempo you need to reach for.
