Review: Soulful pop trio Gabriels hail from LA and the UK and make gospel-tinged electronic music that takes you to a higher plane. After some epic singles and a recent standout performance at Glastonbury which got everyone talking - not least because of the magnificent outfits of the lead singer - they have finally put together a debut album. The first part was widely acclaimed and this seance part is no different. Review: Swedish psychedelic rock band Goat are currently in the middle of a worldwide tour, in recent months introducing their masked, anonymous live shows to festival punters. These shows take on an ensemble, ritual atmosphere, much to the bemused chagrin of consumer audiences, and their recorded albums are no less indicative of their related themes: spirituality, nature, play, death. Recorded across many different locations including Sweden, Brazil, India and Japan, Medicine is their latest opus, whereupon they channel a well-structured form of 70s-style prog to play up the cyclical nature of identity, a fact of life which is lost on most people. To quote the band - for our families, friends, society, this could be done through the use of psychedelics, through meditation, through learning from other people, staying curious and never settling for a 'solid' identity.

Review: Respected UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and ambient legend Gigi Masin started piecing together the music for Dolphin during the lockdown years of 2021, developing their collaborative album online before committing to final recording sessions when they were able to convene at the Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle Of Wight. As you might well expected, there's a sumptuous, refined quality to the music the two have conjured up on this release for Strut, taking in mellow jazz and ambient with elevated musicality at the core. Review: Groove Armada might well be best known for their big beats, and fair enough. Their mastery of a smart sample and a compelling groove paired with catchy vocal hooks made that chart topping superstars who went on to tour the world endlessly before then disappearing and remerging on more underground labels like Hypercolour. But you don't get that good at sampling with being deep digging record fiends. And that is exactly what made them such a perfect fit for the Late Night Tales series which is all about offering up alternative sounds to accompany post-club comedowns. These collections were gateways into new musical worlds for many dance fans and they still stand up today so it's great to have them back in print.

The Collective follows Gordon's 2019 full-length debut No Home Record, and continues her collaboration with producer Justin Raisen, with additional production from Anthony Paul Lopez. Review: Greta Van Fleet were either born too late or at exactly the right time. It all depends on how you feel about Led Zeppelin-esque hard progressive rock music, which is a relatively fitting description for the band although not necessarily bang on. Straight out of Frankenmuth, Michigan, the four piece formed of brothers Jake and Josh (twins no less) and Sam Kiszka, and Danny Wagner, know how to wail, riff, and drive tracks forward, and seem disinterested in falling for, or fawning over, the latest best things since sliced bread. Instead, they create these huge rock 'n' roll symphonies that seem made for stadium-sized crowds. Take 'Meeting the Master', for example - any bigger and it would take over the world itself. Even in less grandiose moments, 'Farewell For Now', it's hard to deny the rousing qualities at play. Overall, then, Greta Van Fleet may be exactly what we all needed, without realising it.

Review: The upcoming collaborative studio album between Liam Gallagher and guitarist John Squire is set to shine a refreshed light on the current state of Britpop. Consisting almost entirely of round-bellied rock, leading the charge is the arresting 'Just Another Rainbow' - here the pair are heard in neat unison, painting a picture of unfazed Gallagher-esque nonchalance in the face of a promised utopia - and 'Mars To Liverpool' - concerning the experience of realising a relationship is over before it's too late. His Black Radio albums are legendary and his work with Dinner Party is ever more celebrated. It was a 2007 follow-up to his 2005 debut and marked him out as a rising star with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid alongside him and helping him to expand jazz's horizons. It also shows off his mad compositional skills and unique knack for harmony. A true modern classic.

Review: Arranger, composer and pianist Gil Evans worked with Miles Davis on two notable albums - Miles Ahead and The Birth of Cool - and also made a fine debut of his own in 1958. A year later he got back in the studio to work on Great Jazz Standards which saw him work with two different ensembles including talents like trumpeter Johnny Coles, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and clarinetist Budd Johnson amongst more. It is a superb look at some great jazz gems from Bix Beiderbecke's 'Davenport Blues' to a shimmering version of Thelonious Monk's 'Straight No Chaser.' It gets the full remastering treatment for this reissue.

Review: Balearic DJs Chris Coco and George Solar have been making tunes together fora couple of years after first meeting at Ibiza Sonica radio. They soon hit it off in person and in the studio, so now we get their first album, Island Vibrations. Solar is an accomplished percussionist so he and Chris made a list of rhythms around which to loosely build each track with some of those used including Nyabinghi, Guaguanco, One Drop and Algaroba. Most were record in Ibiza with added bass from Fly and lots of organic synth work embellishing each one into this lush collection of fresh downtempo and chill out sounds.

Review: Felipe Gordon kicks off the new Wide Awake album with Errare Humanum Est, a second conceptual album that runs a gamut of deep house sounds. The title comes from the Latin proverb 'To err is human' which is an inspiration for Gordon who leaves the mistakes in his music. It was written in his home studio in Bogota at the end of 2022 and the start of 2023 and finds him re-visit some forgotten musical sketches to rework them and cook up a long and absorbing listen that really makes use of the long player format.

Review: If you want to talk about landmark albums, how about Dookie? The third LP from a then-fresh faced but already-jaded Green Day represented a true 'moment' in the development of skate rock and punk, pre-empting the rise of pop punk. Casting a mind back to 1993, when the record hit, and memories prevail of record walls lined with t-shirts sporting the iconic artwork, and a sense that the future of guitar music would be anything but the overblown stadium mega rock that dominated much of the 1980s. Perhaps that never quite became the truth - Green Day catapulted this sound to the top of main stage festival bills in just a few years - but the raw energy, voice of generation X attitude still hits today. We could try and namecheck the highlights, but ultimately, from 'Burnout' to 'All By Myself', Dookie is the largely upbeat driving force of a very special time.

Review: Five years after its first release, Emotional Response is serving up this welcome reissue of Alexis Georgopoulos and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's classic Fragments of A Season. They came together after five years of superb releases and reached new highs here even though they aren't necessarily household names. It saw them turn in some wonderfully expressive compositions played out across all manner of organic instrumentation. The richness of the production and the highly developed ideas embedded within this gorgeous LP should resonate for a long time to come, not least because the pieces are all so easy on the ears.

Review: Contemporary spiritual jazz maestro Muriel Grossmann is a sax player, singer and composer who has already released plenty of well regarded albums, but is nowhere near done yet. Universal Code is her latest and is a bumper double that again finds her offering her own unique take on the spiritual jazz template. She once again recalls her recent band mates Radomir Milojkovic on guitar, Llorenc Barcelo on keyboards and Uros Stamenkovic on drums and Gina Schwarz on double bass and they slide into soul jazz sound with straight ahead sounds that soon soothe with breezy soprano motifs and bluesy walking basslines.

The record was recorded live on January 6th and 7th, 1971 at Club Mozambique and showcases Green's extensive foundatiosn in r&b. When added to his next level mastery of bebop and a style that always favoured expressiveness over technical expertise and you have an enthralling listen.

Review: A collaborative album made and released by Mike Patton and NYC's hip-hop DJ trio the X-Ecutioners, General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners is a landmark album in the big-smoked turntablists' discog, thanks to its then-newfangled embrace of elements of two nascent genres: free jazz and glitch. In fact, the album is themed around a war between the two vastly different styles, which makes it a worthy, but lesser-known contemporary to many other artists fusing the styles at the time, such as Amon Tobin. However, this album is more in the vein of Wu-Tang than future angst; this reissue via Ipecac serves to rejolt its underground infamy.

Review: The latest release in Black Editions Archive's Milford Graves Archival series is this superb double LP, Children of the Forest. It's an album that comes with previously unreleased sessions from 1976 with Hugh Glover and Arthur Doyle. It's music that Graves recorded in his own legendary basement laboratory in Queens just before he recorded his most famous album, Babi. Review: It’s not often you hear titans of the golden era of Blue Note tackling the relative stricture of pop, but that’s what Grant Green did on his 1965 album I Want To Hold Your Hand. As you might well expect, the seminal jazz guitarist lead with a rendition of The Beatles classic, creating a bold abstraction of the original backed up by Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Larry Young on organ and Elvin Jones on drums. Along with the other slightly less familiar songs from the 40s and 50s, Green holds court and channels vocal lyricism into incredibly expressive guitar playing on this standout set from the accomplished peak of his career.

Review: Brazillian music boffins Mr Bongo have pressed up the 1978 self-titled classic from Guilherme Coutinho E O Grupo Stalo so those who want a piece of this mythical classic no longer have to get a mortgage to do so. It's a stunning mix of lo-fi and laidback tropicalia, jazz, funk and MPB with a signature sun-kissed sound that will melt you into your sun lounger on a lazy afternoon. This one is incredibly hard to find even in Brazil and marked a high water mark for band leader and keyboard player Guilherme Coutinho. He was only 41 when he died in 1983 but his legacy lives on with this album which is distinct from many others of the time with its alluring vocal deliveries and charming arrangements.

Review: Canadian composer, arranger, songwriter, and electronic music pioneer Mort Garson just keeps on giving, even now, 15 years after his death. Archival releases since have come not-so-thick-and-fast, but occasional and well thought through, with Journey to the Moon & Beyond the latest example of this. Not, as the cover and title might suggest, the score to some forgotten 1970s animated classic, but instead a collection of stuff very few will have heard before, let alone had opportunity to buy, it's really something special. On the track list, then, you'll find the soundtrack to 1974 Blaxploitation movie Black Eye, or at least part of it. Similarly splendid, but in a very different way, are the grand tones of 'Zoos of the World', originally made to accompany a 1970 National Geographic special of the same name. Then there's the music he wrote for the 1969 moon landings, as used by CBS News at the time. History bottled, or rather pressed, get it while it's fresh (and in stock).

Review: Building on the success of their A New Kind of Love album back in 2022, Ghost Funk Orchestra ventures further into the realms of film music, exotica, and psychedelic surf rock with new record A Trip To The Moon.' It was written with the aim of creating a richly layered and collaged listening experience with myriad elements waiting to be discovered with each new spin, and they have certainly achieved that. Featuring fuzzy guitars drenched in spring reverb and horns arranged in a studio big band style, it offers a blend of garage rock attitude and big compositions with influences like Eddie Palmieri and Dusty Springfield to be found within. It also features real recorded transmissions from the Apollo moon missions weaved throughout the tracks as a tale is told of a woman left stranded on Earth by her cosmonaut partner.

Review: Probably mainly due to the latter day punk rock caricature antics of Billy Idol, Generation X's role in the revolution that overtook music in the late 70s is often overlooked. As members of The Bromley Contingent - a group of early adopters of the Sex Pistols - they rubbed shoulders with Siouxsie Sioux, Sid Vicious and others, but by 1978 they'd released this breathtakingly exciting debut album packed with three minute wonders like 'Kleenex' and 'One Hundred Punks', big on distorted power chords and velocity and low on musical showing off. Ironically, given their roots, this owes much more to the Pistols' northern rivals Buzzcocks than Rotten and co themselves, but that's no bad thing.

Review: Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell have reimagined their much loved 2021 collaboration Burn in an all new live arena. One Night in Porto was recorded whilst on tour in Portugal towards the end of 2022 and found the pair doing a fine job of recreating the Burn album in a live setting. Rather than try to simply serve it up in recognisable form, they instead used its melodic themes and sonic textures as a starting point to head off into new worlds. After four days of rehearsals they took it on the road and as this recording on the third of the four dates shows, it was a great success.

Review: It has been 14 long years in the making, but Laura Groves has finally made the triumphant return we all hoped she might, one day. Unfamiliar? No worries - a quick step back in time might bring the memories flooding back... albeit from her old moniker, Blue Roses. Barely into her 20s, the sole, self-titled album released under that name via XL Recordings was a captivating example of young singer-songwriter romanticism, simultaneously capable of making us feel elated and utterly distraught. Groves' voice is what really stood out, not that the beautiful, often dream-like arrangements weren't also incredible. Thankfully, those vocals are back again here, and arguably in even finer form. Radio Red, the artist's first outing under her own name, is a lush, deep dive into crystalline pop, rarely breaking sweat in tempo terms, and instead inviting us into a fantasy world with shades of folk, soul, and synth audible in the intoxicating mix.

The multi-Academy Award-winning scientific epic charts the development of the first nuclear bomb and subsequent realisation, on the part of the man who cracked the formula, that such terrifying power should never have been brought into our world. Directed by Christopher Nolan, outspoken critics of the master filmmaker may by now be wondering if he'll ever make another movie with a linear storyline - so much of his output is anything but these days. However, that slightly surreal, disjointed, era-jumping approach to storytelling necessitates a soundtrack that combines stunning classical and more avant-garde experimentations. Which Ludwig Goransson delivered with spectacular effect. Now those tones are yours to own.

Review: UK house duo Gorgon City already had solid solo careers before they came together, but since then they have gone into the stratosphere. They've played every major club and festival in the world and also signed to major labels, with EMI the place they now find themselves for Salvation, a new album that showcases their catchy house sounds. It's another triumphant work with lead single 'Lost & Found' in particular featuring the mesmerizing vocals of DRAMA amongst a sea of other equally big and heartfelt house tunes with well-written drums, infectious grooves and earworm melodies.
