Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Derrick Carter - "Squaredancing" (DC Nu Vox dub) (4:59)
  2. George Alexander - "Promised Land" (feat Big John Whitfield) (3:23)
Review: This tasty release is the first instalment of BBE and Soul Clap member Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein's "House On 45" series. The basic idea is to offer up rare and hard to find house cuts that have only ever been released on seven-inch singles. To kick things off, Goldstein has selected Derrick Carter's 2017 "DC Nu Vox Dub" of his 2002 classic "Squaredancing In A Roundhouse", an insatiable version of a killer cut rich in bluesy samples, bumpin' beats and scat vocals. Equally as impressive is George Alexander and Big John Whitfield's 2009 cover of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a warm and musically expansive affair that adds superb new flute and electric piano parts to one of house music's most celebrated songs.

  1. Free Your Mind (5:51)
  2. Imani River (feat Bridgette Amofah) (4:58)
  3. Infinity (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:28)
Review: Italian Latin jazz stalwart Nicola Conte first joined forces with trombonist Gianluca Petrella way back in 2001 on the nu-jazz era "New Standards" single. The pair started working on new material in 2014 and the "Free Your Mind EP" is their third joint release since. They're in a surprisingly up-beat, club-ready mood on EP opener "Free Your Mind", where Ebo Taylor style guitars, Africa 70 organs, tasty vocal samples and Afrobeat style horn lines are underpinned by a relaxed deep house groove. Vocalist Bridgette Amofah stars on the EP's other two cuts: the percussive tribal jazz of highlight "Imani River" and epic B-side "Infinity", a superb chunk of Afro-tinged deep house that sounds like it was inspired by Kai Alce and Ron Trent records.

  1. Heinrich Dressel - "Sem Intro" (3:29)
  2. Galaxian - "Source Reality" (4:50)
  3. Foreign Sequence - "Negative Vibe" (5:00)
  4. Lake Haze - "System Glitch" (4:19)
  5. Jensen Interceptor - "Faceless" (5:49)
Review: With this sequel to December's brilliant, compilation style "The Orbitant" EP, FU ME boss George K is spoiling us. With a high quality threshold and five varied cuts to enjoy, it offers excellent value for money for clued-up electro DJs. Heinrich Dressel sets the scene via some wonderfully spacey, widescreen ambient electronica ("Sem Intro"), before Galaxian wraps 1990 style Yorkshire bleeps and fizzing, minor key electronics around a booming bassline and ghetto-tech style drums on "Source Reality". Foreign Sequence's throbbing, acid-laden "Negative Vibe" sits somewhere between surging Italo-disco and pulsating electro, while Lake Haze's "System Glitch" combines creepy, deep space electronics and ragged acid lines with a rolling electro groove. Arguably best of all though is the mutant funk overload that is Jenson Interceptor's techno/electro fusion workout "Faceless".

Review: Quintessential Chicago deep house; Brett Wilcots' last release as Gallifre landed in 1990 and came with a sublime Mr Fingers edit. Reissued for the first time ever, the whole EP surges with soul and feeling as we're treated to versions for every occasion. Fingers gets his jazz on with a hypnotic, slightly dubby take (and an arousing sax solo), Gallifre provides a powerful percussion heavy dancefloor twist and a peppy original that really brings Jimmie Lee's vocals to life while the Winelight mix adds a soft sunset filter for a sensual finale. Timeless.

Techno
  1. The Phase
  2. Vari Tube
  3. Slam Dunk
  4. Dons Slide
Review: Aubrey's Don Gardon alias was a one-shot decoy deployed in 1997 with the now highly sought-after "Textures" 12" on Aubrey's own Textures label. While the provenance of these new tracks is a little foggy at this stage, what you can be sure of is the grade of techno we're dealing with here. Aubrey's illustrious career speaks for itself, and so do these tracks in the first Textures release since 2001. "The Phase" is an effervescent, funk laced race to the stars, while "Vari Tube" takes a more intimate route through dusty house that wouldn't sound out of place in the Workshop stratosphere. "Slam Dunk" is a cheeky, jazzy affair while "Dons Slide" gets a little more freaky and far out in the finest tradition of B2 tracks.

Review: Apollonia co-head and all-round Parisian legend Dan Ghenacia steps up for his label's latest release. On The Egg EP, you can really hear the various shades of French house presented by a true expert who lived and played throughout the city's best times for over two decades. From the sexy and slinky late night bounce of "A La Coque" which could have been easily played at his Batofar residency at the turn of the millennium, and the tripped-out and slammin' shuffle of "Mykonos Huevos" (taking the best of early '90s Chicago) to the emotive dancefloor drama of "Sunny Side Up" taking on the very best of Detroit influences such as Terence Parker or Blake Baxter.

Review: Don't fear this Reaper... Reaper Recordings is a mysterious brand new label with little information besides their dedication to the jungle craft. If this launch release from Ghosty (AKA Hungry Ghost) is anything to go by, they're not mucking around. "Dead Already" is a powerful subby slammer with eerie top lines and drums that could pierce concrete while "Forward" takes more of a sassy soul approach on the musicality but still drops deep into gully science when it needs to.

Review: Distorted Sensory Perception is a new label emerging out of the Bristol underground to represent the deeper end of the techno and electro scene. The first release is a various artists affair that kicks off with the bold and expressive sound of rising talent Gilbert, last spotted on two excellent Innate releases. Mindless Evolving Objects takes a similar approach laden with harmonious pads and twinkling arps, while Datawave takes things in a darker direction without losing that melodic nous. Label founder Zobol has an emotive bent in his track "Scatterbrain," and Nikolay Sunak completes the set with the illustrious "Dance & Cry Baby."

Review: Glance is returning with an uncompromising and authentic record on Phonk D's Footjob. A founding member of the Running Back imprint with Gerd Janson, the German producer (known to his mum as Thorsten Scheu) has recorded under aliases such as Second Life and Pallaspeople, and here he dug through his archives to come back with some beautiful old tracks. From downbeat hip-hop joints reminiscent of his former genre-crossing alter ego Siro, to moments of classic Stateside house from the early '90s - as best heard on jams like "Strong Enough" or "Missing You" (Dub) or a zeitgeist of The Windy City's heyday on the rather Larry Heard indebted "Great White" which was pure bliss.

Soul
  1. Superbad (3:50)
  2. Ma(r)l Sehen (3:16)
Review: Tramp Records has stayed close to home for this release, reissuing two killer cuts from the 1981 album "Mittwochs In Marl" album by Tyree Glenn Jr. While he is American - his father, Glenn senior, was famously Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist - Glenn Jr had moved to Germany (where he still resides) around the time that the album was recorded. Lead cut "Superbad" is a genuinely heavy, full-throttle funk beast, with Glenn Jr doing his best James Brown impression over an insatiable groove and rousing sax solos. "Ma(r)l Sehen", on the other hand, is a much more breezy affair - an instrumental jazz-funk outing rich in dueling sax and electric piano solos.

Review: Hungarian deep house maestro Gnork has released on some top quality record labels since making his debut in 2013, including Bokhari, Unknown To The Unknown, Crow Castle Cuts and Magicwire. Here he adds another hyped imprint to his impressive discography via a rock solid four-track outing on Church. He begins with the bouncy and saucer-eyed "Golden Hour", where rushing chords and futurist electronics ride a rolling breakbeat house rhythm, before expertly joining the dots between TB-303-driven acid house and electro on "3pm (& Already Happy)". You'll find a dreamier, punchier and more bass-heavy take on electro opening side B ("Space Jam") in collab with Douala, while the EP's closing cut, "Easy MFX", is a lusciously evocative and spine-tingling slab of drifting deep house brilliance.

Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label is seeing a busy August what with the imprint flooding our jazz charts with reissues and, of course, new releases such as this wonderful collaborative effort from The Gondwana Orchestra and Dwight Trible. Trible's voice is like silk, running up and down the delicate waves of melodies from the collective, with "Colors" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" both capable of making the toughest of audiences feel utterly uplifted. On the flip, "Love Is Everywhere" shines bright amid a flurry of flutes and intricate drum percussions, while "You've Got To Have Freedom" rides off a much smoother, deeper sort of vibe that's got a little funk at its core. Wicked.

Review: Here's another highly desirable slice of formative party fuel from the dusty highways and byways of dance music culture, brought to you by the diligent miners at Best Records. The Gong's Gang was a one-off alias for the equally one-off Nicolosi Family, a collective of real-life brothers and sisters who knew a thing or two about classic early 80s Italo boogie. "Gimme Your Love" is a stellar jam, with Rosanna Nicolosi out front on vocals and the cascading synths and bass stewing in an intoxicating blend that should have any funk detective frothing with approval. Whether you want the full vocal hit or the subtly dubbed out instrumental, this is a jam thoroughly deserving of a second run in the sun.

Review: The latest outing from Swiss reissue specialists WRWTFWW takes us back to 1981 and the debut single from Bern-based post-punk combo Grauzone. The 12" release of "Eisbaer" has long been a must-have amongst fans of off-kilter, dancefloor-ready new wave, and this replica reissue includes all three tracks featured on that version. Opener "Eisbar" sets the tone, with the bands weary, half spoken/half sung vocals rising above a backing track that's powered forwards by relentless bass guitar, screeching riffs and broken computer style electronics. "Film 2" is a heavy, synthesizer powered workout peppered with delay-laden drum hits and odd noises, while closing cut "Ich Liebe Sie" is a clicking and quietly melodious affair that's almost entirely electronic.

  1. I Love You (3:18)
  2. Where There's Smoke, There's Fire (3:26)
Review: Athens of the North supremo Euan Fryer was helped in his efforts to reissue this sought-after soul ballad - arguably the most in-demand cut from obscure Dallas-based artist Willie Griffin - by Brooklyn-based crate digger Brian Sears. Together, they somehow managed to locate the master tapes for "I Love You", allowing this pressing to sound even better than the original seven-inch. It's a deliciously breezy and heartfelt affair, with Griffin's impeccable vocal rising above a lo-fi soul backing track rich in gentle guitars and loose drums. Also worth a listen is the slightly heavier and more dancefloor-friendly "Where There's Smoke, There's Fire", which features a glam-rock style beat, bluesy acoustic guitars and some seriously heavy bass.

It's a fine collection, with the veteran D&B duo serving up deep early progressive house (Leftfield), weighty bleep and bass (Ability II's peerless "Pressure Dub" and Juno's "Soul Thunder"), breakbeat-driven hardcore smashers (Zero B, Frankie Bones), early jungle (Wots My Code, Foul Play), slamming techno (Rhythim Is Rhythim, Cybersonik), UK acid house (Ecstasy Club) and rush-inducing rave anthems (Awesome 3, Lennie De Ice). A nostalgic trip down memory lone that boasts just as many underground selections as it does chart-bothering classics.

There's strokes of sultry French stylings too in "Eclipse" around the album's halfway point - a sound reminiscent of Air - to the "Planet Caravan" Black Sabbath modus of cosmic chill out tracks like "Rain". There's even dashes of legendary, one-off band Ibliss in "Privolva". Seriously cool music from a seriously cool dude.

This brand new compilation contains a selection of their best songs from their first three albums, such as "Pablo's Blues" (with Robert Johnson - which was featured in St Germain's legendary Tourist), "You're My Medicine" (with Marvin Gaye), an extended version of "Rock Your Baby" recorded with the original singer George McCrae plus some brand new mixes. The three albums reached gold status, but were unavailable for 10 years due to Fransen and Lancee wanting to preserve the analogue sound of the tracks. Now the time has come and the 'French' period of Gare du Nord is presented here with the original tracks specially remastered for vinyl.

If you are unsure what the style sounds like, we'd recommend checking this reissue of "Onye Kata Obia", an obscure, four-track release from the musician and his backing band, Harmony International, that was most likely recorded around the turn of the '80s. Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.

Review: With associations to the great Wichita label, Californian punk duo Girlpool land a third LP in the twosome's short but burgeoning tenure. The album sees the pair converge a series of solo works over their previous hands on collaboration style; masses of land for this album holding Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, for the time being, apart. Their sound in 2019 reflects tints of Garbage and Hole - grunge, shoegaze and downbeat - to patches of more contemporary electronic impulses in tracks like "Minute In Your Mind" and title track "What Chaos Is Imaginary". While there is some neon to light this LP, it remains an album of wash-dyed hair and denim jacket trips out of the city.

The album itself features the woozy croon of Albarn vocals with a busy concoction of guitars and textured layering that bodes well to encapsulate the murky carnival atmosphere of the album's cover art. The most dream-like of carny sounds are best heard on "The Truce Of Twilight" and "Ribbons" with the slightest of London reggae vibes to boot too.

Review: North London duo Gorgon City have pushed the boat out on this follow-up to hit 2014 debut album, Sirens, delivering a set of radio-friendly vocal dance cuts that brilliantly blend their usual retro-futurist house and garage rhythms with thrilling pop hooks and musical flourishes variously inspired by '90s piano house, R&B, dancehall, grime and UK garage. The expansive cast list of collaborators and guest vocalists is naturally impressive, with pal Duke Dumont, grime pioneer D Double E, R&B chanteuse Kamile, Josh Barry, JP Cooper and Vaults amongst the strongest contributors. As crossover dance albums go, Escape is pretty nifty.

Review: South Korean star Peggy Gou continues her seemingly unstoppable rise by serving up her first ever DJ mix CD. It's a contribution to one of the longest running series in the business, DJ Kicks, and she's used the opportunity to showcase the depth and variety of the music in her crates. Beginning with the classic early '90s ambient of Spacetime Continuum, Gou flits between humid, mid-tempo Balearic house (her own "Hungboo"), acid-fired downtempo electronica (Pearson Sound), throbbing 1990 peak-time anthems (Weatherall's ace but largely forgotten remix of Sly & Lovechild), hypnotic techno minimalism (Dorisburg), main room throb-jobs (Hiver), pulsating electro (DMX Krew), classic breakbeat hardcore (Shades of Rhythm), post-dubstep (Kode 9), dark tribal drum jams (Black Merlin) and sunrise ready Motor City brilliance (Deniro).

Review: Jan Jelinek has made many fine albums over the years, under both his given name and a handful of occasional aliases. One such pseudonym was Gramm, a handle he plucked out of thin air for the release of the now celebrated 1999 full-length "Personal Rock". Here that set is given a deserved 20th anniversary vinyl reissue, allowing a whole new generation to investigate the dusty nooks and crannies of one of the producer's most techno-centric releases. It is every bit as sample-heavy, glitchy and crackling as his other work, whereas other outings explored skewed hip-hop beats and downtempo grooves, "Personal Rock" was more informed by the steady pulse of dub techno, the deep space fluidity of ambient techno and the locked-in hypnotism of original era minimal techno. The results are out of this world.

Review: Audiophile reissue specialists MPS deliver another killer jazz reissue. This time, they've turned their attention to American pianist Joanne Grauer's 1978 sophomore set, which saw her introducing the world to a new talent: vocalist Lorraine Feather. While the latter's contributions - particularly her classic, big band style vocals on the samba-soaked "See You Later" and "Can't Sleep" - are unquestionably superb, the star of the show is undoubtedly Grauer herself. Whether soloing manically over frenetic, up-tempo jazz ("Gork" and the brilliant, album closing Frog Child") or hammering out killer, Jimmy Smith style organ workouts in a jazz-funk style (a superb cover of "Evergreen", the love theme from 1976 Barbara Streisand flick "A Star is Born"), Grauer hits the spot time and time again.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing for all those who love Al Green's distinctive brand of soul: a deluxe box set containing re-mastered, replica versions of "45s" released by the singer on Hi Records between 1969 and '78. It's a wonderfully packaged and produced item, with no less than 26 seven-inch singles being joined by a 56-page hardback book and an ultra-limited Hi Records 45 adaptor. The music is, of course, superb, with the singles containing many of Green's most potent, celebrated and well-known works alongside largely forgotten B-sides and lesser-celebrated bonus cuts.

Review: These are heady times for fans of rare and obscure jazz albums, with essential new reissues dropping every week. Here's another, from lesser-known quintet Griot Galaxy. "Kins", their debut, was recorded over two days in September 1981 and originally appeared in stores early the following year on tiny imprint Black & White Records. This reissue replicates the original artwork and tracklist, with the cuts now sounding better than ever thanks to a tidy re-mastering job and extra-deep grooves. Musically, the six cuts on offer are wild and intergalactic in tone, with Griot Galaxy expertly combining elements of modal, spiritual jazz, free jazz, jazz-fusion and, on dancefloor-ready standout "Zenolog Aintro", bustling jazz-funk.

Review: Co-produced by none other than James Brown and featuring a band led by fellow funk/soul legend Dave Matthews, The Grodeck Whipperjenny's sole album has long been considered something of a must-have by heavy funk fans. Original copies have tended to be hard to come by, so this Record Store Day reissue from Now Again Records, which comes complete with a booklet telling the story of the 1970 set, should be an essential purchase. It's a curiously psychedelic affair, with string-laden, near symphonic moments (see the almost entirely beat-free "Conclusions" being joined by cuts that explore spiraling funk-rock ("Sitting Here On A Tongue") and acid-fired psychedelic rock ("Why Can't I Go Back").

Review: Edinburgh is perhaps not the place you'd look for authentic 1950s and '60s style New York salsa, but that's exactly where Grupo Magnetico earned their stripes. The collective regularly performed in a small cellar bar before cutting their first record, which was released last year by Athens of the North. This debut album, which boasts contributions from singers and musicians from across South and North America and was mixed in New York by legendary Latin producer Aaron Levinson, expands on that single, offering a wonderfully authentic tribute to the glory days of Eddie Pamieri, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, classic NYC salsa and the infamous Fania label.

Review: Under the Guts guise, instrumental hip-hop beat-maker turned tropical soul enthusiast Fabrice Franck Henri has become one of Heavenly Sweetness' most reliable artists. "Philantropiques" is Henri's first album for three years and could well be his most expansive and adventurous to date. The set's 14 tracks are as colourful and musically rich as you'd expect, with the storied producer and a range of vocal collaborators conjuring up tracks that draw influence from a myriad of Central American, Caribbean, South American and African styles. The results are uniformly excellent, with highlights including the tropical shuffle of "Mucagiami (feat Vum Vum)", the sun-kissed French Caribbean funk of "Daddy Sweet (feat Pat Kalla)", the Afro-Tropical rush of "Kenk Corner" and the synth-powered brilliance of "Shake It & Rise Up".
