All The Same (3:00)
Land Before Time (2:09)
Review: Fat Dog make a riveting return to the spotlight with new single 'All The Same'. Following up their 2023 debut 'King Of The Slugs', their latest track is a hardcore stadium-crusher, hadron-colliding motifs of coldwave, EBM and anthem punk for an electronic statement reminiscent of Scalping or Yard Act, but to an end all of their own fashioning. It's no wonder this cold-punk five-piece group of lads are billed as "music to grow your hairline to"; despite the huge sonic histrionics present in their music, the track somehow manages to provoke the release of cortisol and oxytocin in the brain at the same time, nailing that ever so delicate blend of humour and tension.

Primitive Painters (6:00)
Penelope Tree (2:59)
Review: Felt may not have made the longest lasting impact on the common conscious, but nevertheless the UK indie set struck a real chord, and are still widely seen as cult icons among those who know. As part of the deserved celebrations for equally revered label Cherry Red's 45th anniversary, we can now dive into one of the band's finest moments, with this double-A 45" single. Opening on 'Primitive Painters' it doesn't take long to realise where we are on the sonic scale. Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser in a duet with frontman Lawrence, it's rightly considered one of the great British singles of the 1980s and one of the decade's most powerful collaborations, saturated in shoegaze and dream pop while still being resolutely part of a New Wave. Meanwhile, 'Penelope Tree' on the flip opts for a janglier but no less epic feeling.

What A Time (2:52)
92 (3:18)
Million (3:19)
IRL (3:25)
Finish Line (3:11)
Review: Applying what we're all thinking in February 2021 to a kind of Netflix & Chill parody, Fickle Friends are definitely the most thematically fitting band of the month. The Brighton outfit join a long and esteemed list of British pop groups that manage to marry scathing, sarcasm, and bare-boned honesty with sweetness, beauty and universality. Providing you like those keyboards with a No.1-style glitter coating, of course.

Opening on biggest of the lot, 'What A Time', the troupe opt to get the most inescapably positive out of the way first before rolling out real variety. '92' is an icy cool, emotionally scarred (or scarring?) ballad, 'Million' is a stepping, rave-rock workout, with 'IRL' apparently made for sunnier times than the current UK winter, and finale 'Finish Line' closing out on a calming and uplifting tone that's not a million miles away from what some would describe as Balearic chill.

Thank You Jack White (For The Fiber-optic Jesus That You Gave Me) (3:25)
Review: The Flaming Lips are up there with the greatest enigmas in modern music. Anyone who has seen the excellent documentary, The Fearless Freaks, will understand that long before we had Yoshimi going up against pink robots with candy-coloured inflatables, the Oklahoma-born outfit were noise with a capital N, something their live shows nod to in cacophonous, strobe-lit meltdowns juxtaposing the niceties.

Fight Test is plucked from the sweeter end of the oeuvre, dropping as an EP around 12 months after the landmark Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots album landed, with the third single from that record leading the seven tracks here. A startlingly bold collection, including the epic overture 'Do You Realise' and the comedic, or at least slightly tongue-in-cheek faux country of 'Thank You Jack White (For The Fiber-optic Jesus You Gave Me)', its thoroughly smile inducing and only adds to the mystery surrounding the band.

Review: The Flaming Lips' The John Peel Session of October 17, 1996, marked a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the Flaming Lips. Just before their rise to international prominence, the session captured their essence through four tracks that showcased their eclectic blend of neo-psychedelia, experimental rock, and indie influences. Peel, renowned for his astute ear for new talent, played a crucial role in introducing the band's unique sound to a broader audience. The session serves as an audio bookmark to their innovative approach and the impact of Peel's support in propelling them towards global recognition.

Can I Believe You (4:04)
Wading In Waist-High Water (2:08)
Review: Fleet Foxes & Resistance Revival Chorus performed 'Can I Believe You' on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert before this two-track release made its way to us. If that sounds like a pretty cheap way to record a single fear not, the pre-recorded footage juxtaposed the band's frontman, Robin Pecknold, singing alone with the clips of him and full band, joined by the Chorus, in St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church, Brooklyn, New York. And it's the latter segments that have made their way onto this release.

As you can imagine, then, there's a very full sound at play here, with the title number growing into a grand piece of rolling, anthem folk indie. By comparison, 'Wading In Waist-High Water' brings the focus onto the Chorus rather than the group and removes the traditional chart structure, leaving us with a beautiful choir piece that's the strongest of the pair here.

I Don't Belong (4:28)
Review: Fontaines D.C. is one of the most exciting new bands to have emerged in the last year. Their debut Dogrel was a standout offering that turned plenty of heads and now under a year later they are back with more brilliance. The grizzly, punk laced 'A Hero's Death' has snarling vocal work from the front man while big walls of impenetrable guitars wash over you in arresting ways. On the flip, 'I Don't Belong' is less angsty, with a more subdued sound and forlorn sounding voice repeating the title's refrain to sombre effect.

Paris (Aeroplane remix) (7:49)
Paris (Justus Kohncke remix) (10:26)
Review: To mark the 15th birthday of Friendly Fires' breakthrough song, 'Paris' - a nu-rave-era chunk of sing-along indie dance hedonism - XL has decided to offer up a gold vinyl 12" reissue featuring the two most celebrated remixes of the track. Belgian nu-Balearic and nu-disco outfit Aeroplane's much-loved revision - a big club anthem at the time - sits on side A, offering a near perfect blend of loved-up vocals, jaunty synth stabs, kaleidoscopic chords, disco inspired synth-strings and rolling beats. It remains one of the best nu-disco/synth-pop crossover tracks of the last two decades. Over on the flip, there's a chance to admire Kompakt regular Justus Kohncke's tactile, dreamy and similarly colourful revision - a ten-minute blend of deep synth-pop and deep house that's just as good as Aeroplane's better-known mix.

Over Blower (3:49)
Orb (3:24)
A Million Miles Away (4:40)
Review: You can trace the roots of Fu Manchu back to the disaffected wastelands of mid-1980s US suburbia. Specifically Palm Desert, California - at the time, a quite unlikely focal point of a loose 'scene' defined by interferential rock & roll, drawing lines between early grunge, psyche, punk, metal and blues, the movement gave us Masters of Reality, Sleep, and, of course, Queens of the Stone Age. Stoner-leaning Fu Manchu were very much at the centre of that, and are now ready to celebrate 30 years since they emerged from the dry heat and bong water of the period, they've been putting out episodic 10" vinyls on limited pressings to mark the occasion. Musically, this is familiar territory, as hard and gnarly as it is exploratory, funky and infectious, which can only be a good thing when you're celebrating a big one.

I Can't Crack (Broken mix) (6:28)
Throw Away The Script (instrumental mix) (5:20)
Dancing The Hard Bargain (extended mix) (6:29)
Bullet (Unreleased Mix) (9:08)
Review: Emotional Rescue return to the music of cult British group Furniture, shining a light on this unique band's extended 12" mixes and alternate takes. In the 80s tradition, these versions shrug off commercial concerns for something more exciting - long run times and space to tease FX and processes that a radio-friendly single wouldn't allow. "I Can't Crack (Broken Mix)" is an epic crescendo, while the instrumental mix of "Throw Away The Script" locks into a scratchy percussive workout anchored by a moody bassline. The sprightly piano lines and cascading sax on "Dancing The Hard Bargain" are a delight to lose yourself in, while "Bullet" strikes a somber but stirring tone to close the EP out.

Why Don't You Love Me? (feat Tori Amos & Cyndi Lauper) (3:55)
Review: Talk about epitomising the concept album concept. Released on 5th April 2010, Here Lies Love sees the somewhat unlikely partnership of Talking Heads legend David Byrne and UK big beat DJ and producer Fatboy Slim focus their efforts on retelling the tale of Imelda Marcos, former-First Lady of the Philippines, as told with no less than 22 guest vocalists. These include Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos, Martha Wainwright, Natalie Merchant, Sia, Santigold, St Vincent, Florence Welch, and Charmaine Clamor. An impressive list to say the least, just two male voices appear - Steve Earle and Byrne himself - with the record primarily comprising what the latter once described as "clubby dance music". Certainly at the softer, more disco-derived end of that spectrum, the result of all these ingredients is a potent brew of song and story, exploring ideas around power dynamics and drivers, and one of few releases this century worthy of a full stage adaptation, which followed in 2013.

Review: Of all the rock 'n' roll deities, Marianne Faithful might be the most curious. Catapulted to stardom via the hit single 'As Tears Go By', she quickly became the female figurehead of the British Invasion of the US charts and youth culture - a period of time defined by an explosion in popularity of (largely English) bands Stateside. Indeed, she's been active since 1964, has lived the incorrectly romanticised side of the music industry to the full (heroin addiction, homelessness, mental illness) and survived to tell the tale.

A huge problem is the fact not enough people are listening. A case of it's them not her, too often her enormous contribution to the pantheons is overlooked or understated. And yet here we are with Kissing Time - evidence of her status among peers. Drafting (drum roll, please) Jarvis cocker, Beck, Blur, Billy Corgan, and Dave Stewart to support on tracks veering from delightfully robot sleaze droid elec-pop gem 'Sex With Strangers' to the stripped, raw and slightly psyche guitar outing, 'Love & Money', how's that for influence?

Review: East Of Any Place is a treasure trove of songs uncovered alongside Roger Fakhr's acclaimed 2021 album, Fine Anyway. These tracks, hidden for decades and only passed between a handful of people, offer a glimpse into Roger's musical genius and the vibrant scene of Lebanon during a period marked by civil war and social upheaval. This release serves as a companion to the former LP, flaunting studio tracks that didn't make the cut of the previous album. Recorded in single day sessions in the late 1970s, the songs remain untouched, preserving the rawness and authenticity of the moment with impeccable folk-driven arrangements and lyricism shining throughout East Of Any Place.

Review: Long before they were literally one of the biggest pop-rock acts on the planet, little known Chicago pop-punk upstarts Fall Out Boy would pool all collective resources, energy and funds into their 2003 debut full-length Take This To Your Grave; utterly reforming modern emo and pop-punk in the process. While it was 2005's sophomore follow up From Under The Cork Tree that would catapult the band to mega stardom, there's no ignoring the bevvy of legwork that their debut provided, especially lead singles 'Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy' and 'Saturday', which clarified that this was far from another relatively catchy, acne-faced group of adolescents who'd dissipate with the next shower. These songs and the young men behind them were here to stay, which makes the heavier hardcore-leaning moments and breakdowns all the more bemusing to experience when assessing the career the band would embark upon following the record's breakout success.

Review: The Fall's Mark E. Smith was having a rather torrid time even by his own standards when the band made The Marshall Suite in 1999. He was fresh back from a US tour on which he had been fighting with fellow band members on stage and was later arrested after carrying on the shenanigans back at the hotel. The album itself builds on the techno sounds The Fall had explored on the preceding album Levitate but also with something of a return to the rockabilly-influenced sound from earlier Fall line-ups. Cuts like 'The Crying Marshal' are as strange and complex as they come with thumping jungle drums powering it along.

Review: Last year, former Fall guitarist (and now celebrated radio broadcaster) Marc Riley stumbled on a rare bootleg recording of a concert the band had given to a sparsely populated audience at St Helens Technical College in the spring of 1981. To celebrate the gig's 40th anniversary, the recording has now been re-mastered and pressed to wax. It's a brilliant document of the Fall at their post-punk era best, with legendary front man Mark E Smith talking, singing, yelping and shouting has way through a series of raw, post-punk era workouts built around raucous, fuzz-toned guitars, low-slung basslines and loose-limbed drumming. For fans of Smith and his long-running band, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: The Fall's tenth album, like pretty much all the others, was met with a mixed critical response, but as well as containing one of the band's only two Top 40 UK singles - their cover of 'Victoria' by The Kinks, executed with a sideways swipe at the Victorian values of the Thatcher-led Tory government of the time - it's also got a stack of tracks that have grown to be Fall fan favourites. 'Carry Bag Man', autobiographical in a pretty loose sense, is compulsive and hilarious. The tight and taut glam stomp meet Krautrock drive of 'Bremen Nacht', complete with scraping violins and honking saxes, is about as good as the band gets in this particularly purple patch of their lengthy career. 'Athlete Cured' , as well as containing the priceless line "an odour resembling hot dogs / permeated his whole room", is all rockabilly aggression re-routed through synth drums and Moog washes, is essential Fall too.
As if that weren't enough, this re-issue package comes with a whole host of additional delights, including their biggest hit 'Ghost In My House', the electro hybrid anthem 'Hit The North', four radio session tracks, and their cover of The Beatles' 'A Day In The Life', previously only available on an NME charity album. Far from being a Fall completist's dream - they will probably have everything on here anyway - this is actually a brilliant place to start discovering one of the most important and delight-inducing bands of the past half decade.

Smith was at his most alcoholically antagonistic. As such it was a difficult time for the band but one that still bore fruit with Smith on most of the vocals but producer and performer Mike Bennett, drummer Karl Burns and guitarist Brix Smith also stepped up to the mic. Angular rhythms feature as always next to funny lyrics and unusually clean production.

Review: By the time Shift-Work came along, The Fall had put out 13 studio albums and been going for 15 years. Apparently ready to switch things up, Mark E Smith sacked guitarist Martin Bramah and keyboardist Marcia Schofield after the Australian leg of the tour for Extricate, cutting the lineup to four, for the first time in the band's history. Then he set to work finishing a record that had been started while on the road. Few would fail to pick up on the difference between here and before. While there's still plenty of those mesmerising, experimental, punk-not-punk goth moments, Shift-Work also embraces more pop sensibilities and seems to take more time to pay respect to rock & roll, or a gritty interpretation of it. Meanwhile, tracks like 'Edinburgh Man' and 'A Lot of Wind' feel introspective than ever.

Review: Legendary English post-punk band The Fall's 2018 album Imperial Wax Solvent gets the reissue treatment here with two extra bonus discs, including an unused version of the entire album which was recorded at Britannia Row studios in London, as well as a live set recorded at De La Warr, Bexhill On Sea in May 2008. It was the band's 26th album and featured the lineup of original member Mark E. Smith plus Elena Poulou on keyboards and vocals, Dave Spurr on bass, Pete Greenway on guitar and Keiron Melling on drums. This is the latest in the Cherry Red reissue series and it comes with notes written by Fall guru Daryl Easlea.

Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.

Review: We all lost a big one in 2018 with the death of Mark E. Smith. One of the most prolific songwriters of the preceding decades, and the only constant member of The Fall, he channelled humour of the disenfranchised, rage of the people, punk sensibilities and experimental tendencies to create something that genuinely sounded fresh. Amazingly, it still did by the time he bid us farewell. That's some longevity of vitality, and when a band has such a lifespan it's almost impossible to even consider a Best Of type release. White Lightening is as close as you'll get, then, focusing on ten tracks recorded by the outfit, in various iterations, between 1978 and 2001 - amazingly, charting two-thirds of the 40 year story in a way which, while not necessary expansive, really conveys exactly what they were about at different points in that career, and throughout their entire era-spanning run.

Review: While the third overall full-length from Sacramento, California post-hardcore heroes Far (following on from their independently released 1992 debut Listening Game and 1994's Quick), Tin Cans With Strings To You would mark their major label debut for Immortal/Epic; a project their manager Troy Davis has gone on to consider the first ever screamo album. While that bold declaration is up for debate, there's little doubt the record's extended platform was likely one of the biggest pushes from the label with regards to the hardcore and punk scenes of the 90s. Brimming with carnal angst, hazy hooks and bombastic riffage, it's no secret why vital alt rock acts such as Biffy Clyro and Jimmy Eat World still refer to Far as one of their most intrinsic influences. Arriving on a lush gatefold 180 gram red & blue marbled vinyl double LP, complete with an extensive booklet, limited to 300 copies, this long overdue reissue of a quintessential piece of crossover 90s emotive post-hardcore fury is sure to fly out and reappear on Discogs at similar inflated prices to the OG pressings.

Review: Billed as the most vital and sophisticated creation of their career yet, Fat White Family return with Forgiveness Is Yours. As if to reaffirm that forgiveness begins with forgiving oneself, the South London band's fourth album comes with limited fanfare (they hardly need it), perhaps owing to the fact that this is a record said to have pushed the band to "the limits of their very existence", entailing a consistent "will to create even when catastrophes keep happening". Forgive oneself for what, though? Torpor, apparently; from 'Bullet Of Dignity' to 'What's That You Say', this slick and suggestive indie album is a testament to finding the correct harmony in chaos, and waking up from our half-dazes to find an active truth.

Review: Josh Tillman, the ex-Fleet Foxes member, has confused plenty with his alter ego Father John Misty, and occasionally it can be hard to tell whether the recently-married troubadour is inhabiting a distinct role or dealing out confessional ditties straight from the heart. Yet what is beyond question is how fascinating and addictive I Love You, Honeybear manages to be. By turns lushly arranged and stark, Tillman sets his reflective songwriting to a sonic backdrop infused with Laurel Canyon flavour, arriving at a reinvention of the singer-songwriter stylings of the mid-'70s for a newer, still more complicated era-think Elton John by way of John Grant. The result is a modern-day triumph that's as acerbic as it is emotionally involving.

Review: Perhaps LA's most well-loved postmodern troubadour, Joshua Tillman brings his third album as Father John Misty, a sprawling and theatrical epic polemic on just about all of our modern society. The quality of his writing here is far more complex and impressive, as heart-wrenching chord progressions and grandiose song structures keep the listener firmly in the palm of his hand. The album's title 'Pure Comedy' is the first stab of bitter irony here, as Tillman seems in a more serious and pensive mood than we became used to with tongue-in-cheek and self-assured previous albums 'Fear Fun' and 'I Love You, Honeybear'. That isn't to say that the album is totally humourless, but that Tillman uses it in smaller doses to antidote the cathartic and anxious emotion to far greater effect.

Review: You need real confidence to take on a back catalogue of The Velvet Underground's caliber. Of course, it definitely helps if your band were contemporaries of sorts, knocked about in similar circles in the heady New York City scenes of the early-mid-1970s, and subscribed to Village Voice (and impressed their editorial team even before you got signed). All this means you don't redo tracks with borrowed nostalgia or vibes, but instead have first hand experience of what helped make them what they were at the time. So here we are then, Big Apple alt rock & rollers The Feelies turning their hands to the work of Lou Reed et al, paying homage to an outfit that had a huge influence on them in the first place. And they do a fine job, straddling the delicate line between reworking and completely rethinking anthems from 'Venus in Furs' to 'Sunday Morning', carefully managing to make each their own without forgetting what made these songs so incredible in the first place.

This one, Gold Mine Trash, is the most coveted and drooled-over, thanks to it making up a backstock of archive material and singles that never made it to Felt's main LPs. Highlights include 'Primitive Painters', a bright and gushy-washy duet with their contemporary dream pop friend Liz Fraser and the sensitive, bright and ever so slightly discordant 'Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow'.

Review: Lawrence (Hayward)'s master project Felt was the darling of 80s indie music pushers Cherry Red, whose collective studio tinkerings gave rise to this compilation of some of the band's most exclusive music from the early to mid 1990s. At Bubblegum Perfume's conception, Lawrence had declared that he would make ten singles and ten albums in ten years, all for the newly befriended Creation Records (Cherry Red had seen a falling-out). This collection is the result: dreamy reverb analogia over psychedelic, jangly and honest vocals, with uptempo whirliers like 'Gather Up Your Wings And Fly' leaping forwards with a genial brightness.

Review: Bubblegum Perfume is a newly reissued album from cult 80s indie outfit Felt. It goes on a nice pink coloured vinyl and is a perfect primer for anyone looking to get into this band and its vast back catalogue. It first came on Cherry Records in 1990 at a time when guitarist Maurice Deebank quit and rejoined the band multiple times. He had always planned to release 10 albums and 10 singles and they are all drawn upon for this compilation which captures those peak years perfectly.

Review: Felt were formed at the end of the 1970s by Lawrence Hayward as a shining emblem of the burgeoning indie pop movement. The majority of the Warwickshire band's early music came out on Cherry Red before they eventually signed to Creation for the second half of their tenure. There's a brittle fragility to the sound of their breakout years which is beautifully captured on this compilation, gathering together works recorded and released between 1981 and 1985. If you're unfamiliar with this nugget from the UK's indie legacy, then this is the perfect way to familiarise yourself.

With both acts playing to their strengths, and sharing ideas in effusive fashion, FFS is a collection of indelible songs that never let their artful campery and arch histrionics triumph over melody and fresh invention. As over the top in its flamboyance as one would expect this collaboration to be, this inspired collision of circumstances has more than enough substance to match its style.

Review: Death Is Nothing To Us has been a long time coming, and in many ways represents pinnacle moment in the Fiddlehead story. In 2010, Pat Flynn, who some knew though Have Heart, lost a father who left behind his grief-stricken mother. Faced with the profound impact death can have on those forced to pick up the pieces, and feeling incapable of helping, this emotional period directly informed Fiddlehead's 2018 debut, Springtime & The Blind. A little later, Flynn's first child came into the world, and the sadness that comes with having a kid but no father to introduce them to was distilled into 2021's follow up, Between The Richness. Now, two years on, Death Is Nothing To Us rounds off the fatalistic trilogy, a rousing journey from bleak depression to strength, which touches on ideas from sleeping off trauma to leaning on friends. The result is every bit the right way to conclude this odyssey - leaving us under no illusions as to how difficult life can be, but how important it is to acknowledge when it's there, all delivered through equally vital hardcore anthems.

Review: F.I.D.E.L (Further Individual Delusions) is the avatar project of Paris-based composer, producer and A&R, R. DIlouya; UK funk and soul and Northern soul legend John Turrell; and French hip-hop, soul and jazz force majeure Sly Johnson. Hailing from North Paris and Northern England, F.I.D.E.L release their latest project Out Of Sight to the great post-disco, boogie and new wave pop that shaped the world's collective unconscious at the twilight of the Thatcher / Cold War Era. F.I.D.E.L takes this as a jumping off point and channels its sound through the care and the musical craft of the past to a yet more modern soundscape using Prophet Synthesizers, Clavinets and Drum Machines to create a fast, nervous, funky, ironic and intoxicating satire of post-COVID Western society. While most of the musical heavy lifting is done by Dilouya himself, Turrell lays down socially anchored lyrics, rooted firmly in the gritty, no-nonsense world of a working-class man. Recorded over two week-long studio sessions in Paris, Out Of Sight showcases Dilouya's timeless songwriting and bold production style, setting ground for Turrell's classic vocal performances and Sly Johnson's revered musicianship.

Originally released in 1988, this goth masterpiece and reissued here in form set was released, featuring four bonus tracks for fans to enjoy. Known for their blend of hard rock, goth and psychedelic elements, led by vocalist Carl McCoy's growling, harsh voice adding a heavy edge to the music alongside Tony Pettit on bass, Peter Yates and Paul Wright on guitars and "Nod" Alexander Wright on drums, they create a powerhouse of sound on tracks like 'Chord of Souls' and epic seven minute opener 'Endemoniada'. The album debuted at an impressive number 12 on the UK album charts, solidifying Fields Of The Nephilim's status as pioneers in the goth rock genre along side contemporaries like Sisters of Mercy and The Mission.

Recorded in a former courthouse in the Somerset countryside, it has not been re-pressed since then and now comes on special golden brown vinyl with, of course, their most celebrated track and the rather epic 'Moonchild' (which hit number 28 in the UK charts) included alongside three other new bonus cuts. Influential frontman Carl McCoy twisted metal and electronics in his work after he first formed the band in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. This album was their best work and still stands up today.

It has become a cult classic ever since and is their one and only ever album. It now comes reissued with a 24"x24" poster & original insert with lyrics courtesy of Mental Groove. Review: Seattle was once the centre of the world when it came to alternative rock and is of course famous for being the home of grunge kings Nirvana. The Fire Theft is an alternative rock outfit from the same area and they came together first in 2001, formed from the ashes of cult emo band Sunny Day Real Estate. Made up of vocalist and guitarist Jeremy Enigk, bass player Nate Mendel (who also plays with the Foo Fighters) and sticks man William Goldsmith, they now celebrate the 20th anniversary of their one and only album with a special reissue. The last time this was reissued in 2019 it soon sold out and fetched high prices on secondhand markets, so do not sleep on this one.

Review: It's autumn 2017 and one thing is for sure - people are still allowed in concert halls and theatres, which are still hosting performances. Around 12 months ago, music had lost a true legend in the form of Leonard Cohen, and Swedish folk pop heroes First Aid Kit decided to pay tribute to the late-great artist's work with a show at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

Skip forward to today and this album, from that show, is as close as most will get to a theatre for some time, never mind Scandinavia. As the tracklist suggests, there's a range of Cohen's catalogue being interpreted, and we really do mean interpreted, with help from accompanying players Annika Norlin, Frida Hyvonen, Jesper Lindell, Maja Francis and Loney, Dear. Which was the only logical approach - recreation rather than replication is the most fitting tribute to such an enigmatic and unique artist.

Review: It's always pleasurable to watch a band grow into themselves, realise early promises and fulfil potential. It wouldn't be over-egging it to say that Palomino, the fifth album from Klara Soderberg and sister, represents that moment for First Aid Kit. The Swedish indie-pop siblings have been courting praise and attention for years now, but there's always been a sense of not quite being ready for the big time, until now.

LP five is an altogether freer record, to say the least, and as such represents the pair growing into their own skin and finally having the confidence to step out of it. Laid bare, we're given meditations on mid-road trip break ups, self-acceptance, emotional doubts and redemption. Familiar themes, yes, nevertheless everything here is dealt a refreshing original hand.

Review: It has taken five years for FKA Twigs to follow up her astonishing first album, "LP1". With that kind of timeframe, you can't help but have high expectations for the finished product, expectations "Magdalene" more than meets from the off. An artist in the truest sense - with every step and stage in the recording process controlled by her - it's an accomplished comeback for a woman who in the last half decade has experienced both personal loss and major physical challenges. Don't expect more of the same, then, but instead a talent finding new purpose and new confidence following difficult times. With the ever-impressive Nicolas Jaar giving a helping hand, the result is a raw, honest record that's deeply personal, full of self-reflection and, ultimately, accepting and positive. Not to mention destined to be on repeat. Her position as one of the UK's most vital and compelling acts re-confirmed.

Review: The celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album that did more than any other to make the Flaming Lips a global success, 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots', Rhino has put together what could well be the ultimate 'deluxe' anniversary edition. The original album, which saw the by then veteran psychedelic rock band present a more accessible, radio-friendly sound informed as much by trip-hop, 'top 40' pop and jangly dream-pop as psychedelia and alt rock, is presented in re-mastered form and comes backed with no less than five CDs of additional material recorded in the period. That means a mixture of demos, B-sides, remixes, live radio performances and, on discs five and six, two almost complete live performances. For fans of the band, it's a genuine must have - almost the greatest Christmas present you could give them.

Review: The Flaming Lips' 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is being reissued as 6CD and 5LP 20th anniversary box sets - with both featuring demos, B-sides, radio sessions and more. Containing a godlike 100 or so tracks on it, it includes lost rarities like 'Psychedelic Hypnotist Daydream (Demo)' and 'The Deterioration Of The Fight Or Flight Response" (B-side Fight Test UK CD 1)' and Flaming Lips fans surely have their work cut out for them. A must for all obsessive collectors of the UK psychers' work, hoping to salvage their most obscure sonic trips - the ones that never came back.

Review: As is the modern way with all major album birthday milestones, this one now gets a special 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition which means it comes on limited edition pink vinyl. It is a record that collects together four fab fan favourites. The major one is the 24-minute epic 'Psychedelic Hypnotist Daydream (demo)' which takes up all of the a-side and is a truly immerse and heady sonic trip. It is one of the group's most epic ever tunes and also included are 'Duck Dodgers Theme (Duck Dodgers Demo: With Wayne Scratch Vocal),' 'I Know I've Got To Make That Dream The Real Thing (Demo),' and last but not least the lovely melancholy of 'Do You Realize?? (Instrumental).'

Review: The Flaming Lips are among the greatest musical enigmas of the late-20th and early-21st centuries. If you've not seen the exceptional and insightful documentary, The Fearless Freaks, then we highly recommend doing so. The film charts the outfit from their early days as what might be described a white noise and industrial troupe, through to their crossover into mainstream success via one of the most unique indie-pop sounds we have ever encountered. Suffice to say, then, watching them live is an inimitable experience, an evening of surreal inflatables plucked straight from psychedelic somewhere and frantic strobe-lit guitar cacophonies. While this recording of their whole-of-record rendition of landmark LP Yoshimi doesn't really touch upon anything that came before said album, it does capture what makes their performances so incredible.
