Review: There is a great backstory to this new one on Blue Hour: when Stockholm producer, DJ and promoter Maya Lourenco aka Parallax Deep was digging for music in the local Snickers Record store, she found two classic goa and psy trance tracks that particularly interested her. As such she snapped them up, took them home and began to work on her own distinctive edits of them, rearranging sections, cutting up bits and adding extra details while never getting too far away from the essence of the originals. Her edits of those two originals - 'Gobi Desert' by 100th Monkey & Tristan from 1995 - and 2000's 'Bunker' by Four Carry Nuts - are pressed up here and both sound brilliant.

This new drop on the imprint is a potent one first brought to life by Elli Acula with his ravey and edgy 'Bff.' Review: The twisted and trance-infused progressive techno sound of Les Disques De La Jungle is one we have been keen to hear more from, and here we have it: a new EP featuring some of the artists who have already dropped heat here. AV1 goes first with the crispy metal drums and warped synths of 'Meta2' then Fsk24 & Felix Dulac combine for the hammering tech-funk of 'Un Eclair Dans La Nuit' which would have been a Tyrant classic back in the day. Fsk24 then hooks up with Nils for the stomping and noen-lit jungle-tech of 'Toomai Des Elephants' before partnering with Solal Reyes for the tripped out but driving closer 'Tongue Twister'.

It comes as a limited edition and hand-numbered 180-gram vinyl 12" with an extended and alternate mix. Both feature Felix Raphael and both have a subtly uplifting prog-house effect that unfolds slowly over the rich, silvery drums and deft synth drones that are all constantly on the rise. The vocals are spine-tinging, soft and tender whispers that help make this a most angelic of sounds.

Review: Bumping bass house blends right here as Facta links up with Lurka's Fringe White for a wobbly slab of jacking fun that's reminiscent of the early Switch and Jesse Rose material from around 20 years ago. After a rapid run of first releases in 2022, we've been waiting for a follow-up from the chap and he more than delivers. As the EP title might suggest, he's exploring echo chamber processing on his tracks, but the delay and reverb is teased with precision amidst the shimmering, psy trance tinted tech house vibe he so ably builds on these incredibly accomplished club cuts. Review: Nation of Jak offshoot Dirty Blends was established by label chief Melvin Oliphant as a vehicle for "interpretations" and "homages" - in plain-speak hush-hush reworks, tribute tracks and those that sample liberally. The label's latest release is a compilation of sorts, featuring as it does cuts from a trio of artists. The Falcon steps up first with title track 'Sound The Alarm', a raw, jacking, bouncy and positive mind-melding blend of lo-fi synth stabs, sweat-soaked beats, fire alarm noises and restless drum machine fills. Over on side B, Grizzly Knuckles' 'Mad Bell' - a breathless, house tempo techno workout built around a nagging synth-bell loop - is followed by label regular The Jak's 'Aftermath', which sits somewhere between jacking lo-fi techno, UK funky and stab-happy Soca-house.

And there is no one finer for that honour than Fantastic Man, a legend in the game with a fantastically fresh sound no matter what style he turns his hand to. Review: Returning to Drumcode for the umpteenth time comes Marco Faraone, offering up two tracks, 'Dangerous' and 'Pressure', both of which evoke gargantuan factory rooms and processing plants. The first track is a clean and pulsatory loomer, with essences of tech house and big room sprinkled in, as we're continually reminded that whatever awaits us round the corner, "it's dangerous". Review: Fausto wrote his new single with the mantra "the less you force, the faster things become clear" in mind. 'Mexicoma' is indeed a fresh sound, a mix of slow and heavy EBM drums and stark hits run through with weird vocal mutterings and taught acid lines that twang about the mix. It's a great experimental chugger for teasing a backroom. The Roe Deers remix is a subtle rework with more elastic drums and bass and the Elfenberg remix then gets more raw and frazzled. Mijo seems to slow it a touch and up the acid quota while the Passific Assalt Sissem dub remix is a fleshy one to rewire your brain.

Review: Portuguese techno mainstay Lewis Fautzi is in some form of late - it was only in September that he dropped his fantastic Manner of Death album on Faut, then he was back with more in 12" form on Polegroup in November and already he is now out of the blocks in 2024 with this impactful new four-tracker. His brand of tech tends to be dark and heavy, with apocalyptic abstractions and lo-fi synth, echoing hits and dub undercurrents all making for engrossing grooves full of drama and tension. Review: Ethan Fawkes is an old-school rave, techno and EBM artists from Belgium. The sounds he has long since championed are very much back en vogue now with all the cool kids and so it is that his 'Belgium Is Back' tune now gets reissue with a series of huge contemporary remixes. The original is a writhing and contorted big room banger with oversized synths and slamming kicks. Review: Simona Faraone's label, New Interplanetary Melodies, welcomed Feel Fly for an EP that is "inspired by the ancient and mysterious Etruscan culture, whose peoples inhabited the historical-geographical region of central Italy." He hails from Italy himself of course and has written soundtracks for movies as well as great dancefloor tunes. The tracks here combine dreamy melodies with hurried breakbeats, corrugated acid techno jams and 90s post-rave house sounds that carry you on waves of blissed-out pads. Review: Unstoppable Munich label Ilian Tape has another entry in its fine ITX Series here and this one is called 'Biospore Farmers' from Fields of Mist, describing it as "Sunrise Beams Through Orbital Mist." In less abstract terms, it is a gorgeously hazy and lo-fi electro-exploration. The first two cuts are slow, doleful and reflective with grainy pads and deep space ambiance swirling around nice rough-edged broken beats. The B-side picks up the pace with the brilliantly kinetic bounce of 'Astral Projection Spores' and then the skittish and celestial trip that is 'Orbital Mist'. A high-class EP once again.

Review: Neapolitan duo Fireground have been on a rapid ascent since debuting on Tresor in 2021, and following their Recreation 12" earlier this year they return to Ilian Tape for a second round of immersive, high-pressure techno soul. Review: Alan Fitzpatrick returns to Drumcode, marking his first appearance since late 2016 when he remixed Moby's hit "Porcelain".The release opens with "Brian's Proper Dun One", a track which caused a storm on his Twitter profile when he first started playing it last year. Loaded with sharp and pounding drums, this is a no holds barred, certified main room anthem! "Wait A Second" has been getting a lot of play on Drumcode Radio of late. This rave inspired track takes a raw, stripped back approach and delivers a killer blow. Alan sampled the vocals of MC r1bbz from an LTJ Bukem tape pack from the early 90s and the record tips its cap to early jungle raves around the M25. The release closes with "Trance, Init?" a homage to Fitzpatrick's days as a raver before he became a DJ. Review: The intriguingly named Perfumed Freedom makes its debut here with a seductive new minimal EP from Foehn & Jerome. The Frisbee of No Return is the sort of well-designed outing that lovers of those intimate yet zoned out 4 am moments will love: opener 'T-Dive' layers up synths that convey an unsettling sense of mystery and malevolent energy over flappy drums. 'Happy M'June' pumps the drums a bit harder while wonky synth details unfurl up top and last of all is the most raw of the lot - 'New Soul Interruption' has rasping bass and more cluttered arrangements.

Review: Strap yourselves in for this one because Fon Smith manages to pair great drum programming with lush synth arps that very much take you to the stars. Opener 'Noche En El Suburbio' is a gorgeous mix of both, with molten and mellifluous patterns rising and falling through the sky as the rubbery drums motor below. A Keymono remix of the same track adds more heft to the kick and pares things back to a more icy and minimal vibe but still one that is superbly cosmic. 'Happy Times With Happy People' is a loose-limbed house cut with dusty drums and languid synths.

Review: Following a relatively quiet year which saw him release just two (admittedly must-check) EPs via Dub Recordings and PLURm Ryan James Ford gets his 2024 campaign underway with his first 12-inch for Clone's Basement Series in almost four years. Inspired in part by the crumbling, concrete-clad surrounds of Tower Hamlets in London, Ford offers up a swathe of Brutalist techno workouts tailor-made for sweat-soaked peak-time sessions and pitch-black basement parties. He begins with the dystopian, funk-fuelled heaviness of 'Bellmarsh', before reaching for fiendishly distorted beats, jacking bass and intergalactic synth stabs on 'Dimples'. His music remains innovative and essential and here he appears on an equally vital label, Classic. 'AHYEE' is timeless deep house with chunky drum funk and great vocal samples. Review: Andy Cowan and M. Cowan are the brothers behind the short-lived 90s techno duo Fozbee & Cooz. They didn't put out a lot, but what they did was excellent, and is now the subject of this reissue on Vinyl Fanatiks which offers up the title track of their 1991 debut EP in all its glory. It is a perfect convergence of sounds of the day - ripping acid, progressive synth melodies and lush bleeps. The other two cuts are 'I Need' which has a more house feel but is no less analogue and raw but for the yelping female coo at the heart of it, and the wonky melodies of 'Easily' close things down.

Review: Frankey & Sandrino are a mighty pair who know how to lay down compelling tech sounds. They unite once more here for a powerful two-tracker on the legendary Berlin-based Rekids label. First up is 'Brainscan' which is dark and moody, with futuristic synths and stark vocals over a rolling, tense bassline. On the flip is 'Condesa' which is a much more loose affair with broken beat drums and 80s synth lines. It has a post-rave 90s feel but updates for modern dance floors. Review: Fred P continues to be a prolific driving force in deep house, with his own Private Society label carrying a huge amount of his work these days. On this latest single he maintains one of his other close working relationships with Parisian institution Synchrophone, delivering three cuts of his refined, endlessly immersive music. 'Dance Of Rhythms' is a driving, sharply defined cut with a lot of action occurring in the lower register while the higher frequencies have acres of space to stretch out in, all the better to keep your head mellow while the hips sway. 'The Beauty In The Sound' is a more pattering affair and 'Vibe Science' favours a nagging drum pattern which nods towards jazz funk as much as techno. This is quintessential Fred P mastery, through and through.

Review: Louie Fresco is a firm fixture in Mexico's booming tech house scene these days, and as he continues to evolve as an artist we find him linking up with Curtea Veche for an EP which brings unmistakable Latin qualities into a club context. On the original of 'Junto A Ti', a freaky framework of twitchy percussion and looming bass builds in delicate formation around the vocal which defines the track. 'Youknowhatimsayin?' is a more sprightly affair which leans on deft breakbeats and warped voices flinging in and out of the mix, not least some choice spots from the one and only J-Roc.

Review: Since debuting the project in 2019, FSK24 has become an outlet for the more psychedelic and hallucinatory aural explorations of French producer Chris Carrier, an artist who has been serving up deep house and tech-house treats (under a variety of aliases) since the late 1990s. That love of trippy, mid-90s style techno psychedelia comes to the fore once more on the first FSK24 EP of 2023. Check first opener 'South Aitken', an intergalactic electro explosion blessed with deep, foreboding bass and smothered in echoing electronics, undulating acid motifs and ambient techno sonics, before admiring the stabbing acid bass, LSD-trip electronics, and rolling acid house beats of 'Alphaville'. Arguably best of all, though, is the locked-in house shuffle of 'Ghostpoint', where echoing acid riffs and Brown Album era Orbital style motifs catch the ear.

Review: FSK24 returns with his first solo EP on Les Disques De La Jungle, the Atom Confusion EP, featuring a selection of trance-infused techno bangers aimed squarely at the dancefloor. From the bouncy and emotive groove of opening cut '8th Sense' which is followed by the playful peak-time banger 'Broken Link' on the A-side, to cuts over on the flip like 'No Excuse' with its Detroit funky vibe and the snarling acid excursion of 'Atomic Confusion'- FSK24 sure proves he's the king of the jungle.

Review: Dynamic Reflection remains a steadfast platform for 'proper' techno with something to say. Since 2008 they've been pushing artists to match dancefloor functionality with original ideas, and so the story continues on this latest VA release. Veritable legend Function steps up first with the tense, restrained arp odyssey of 'Give Thanks To The Sun', while label regular Viels jumps in next with the ironically titled tough-trucking workout 'Fragile'. Abstract Division kick off the B-side with the sizzling, rippling 'Convolution' (not to be confused with the Skudge track of the same name), and DOM completes the picture with a teasing, broken rhythm and psychoactive frequencies of the highest calibre.

Review: There's a reason that Future Sound of London's 1991 debut single, 'Papua New Guinea', is periodically reissued: it's a stone-cold classic that sounds unlike anything else. In its original mix form, the track combines traits borrowed from early breakbeat hardcore (booming bass, house-tempo breakbeats) with saucer-eyed vocal samples, twinkling pianos and sounds more often found in ambient house and chill-out tunes from the period. This remastered, hand-numbered vinyl reissue boasts all of the 1992 remixes (as well as the original mix), including a suitably psychedelic, tribal-tinged Andrew Weatherall revision, the duo's own spaced-out ambient style 'Dub' mix, and a sax-sporting Manchester re-wire courtesy of 808 State's Graham Massey.

Review: When a hand-stamped Plus8 record - the legendary Canadian techno imprint's first vinyl outing since 2012 - arrived in stores last month, it naturally set tongues wagging. While there was no artist credit, it bore all the hallmarks of Richie Hawtin's stripped-back, drum-machine driven outings under the Plastikman alias. This speedy follow-up comes from a similar place, aesthetically, and sounds like a pair of recently unearthed 808-and-909 jams from the early '90s. Both "Purrkusiv" and "Gymnastik" are deliciously percussive, offering little more than expertly programmed percussion and heavy, woozy basslines. Hawtin, if it is he, has always been able to create gold out of a handful of rhythmic elements, and both tracks fall into this category.

Review: Mosaic main man and peerless UK dub techno titan Steve O'Sullivan has paired off against Fletcher for this latest heavyweight 12". As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. It's a classic amongst many on this label. 'With That' is another tight, compelling and tech tinged dub roller with real bite and drive, and 'Treading Water' then blisses you out with its liquid chords and sense of endless infinite groove.

The bassline is a filthy and old-school gem with organ chord stabs and spoken word snippets adding the irresistible sense of naughty house funk. DMA then bangs the box with cosmic synths and hints of 90s post-rave, Pilot System cruise on a chunky bit of bass-driven house and Frozilla & TJ go deep on far-sighted chords and bubbly bass. This is unpretentious, functional but fun house music from a small but already well-formed label.

Review: On their latest deep dive into the archives, Re:discovery Records has dipped into the vaults of techno producer Dietrich Schonemann, serving up selected tracks from two projects active between 1993 and '95: Portotype 909 (a trio that also included Jason Szostek and Taylor Deupree) and Facil (a collaboration with Abe Duque). Two tracks from the latter take pride of place on side A: the sparse, creepy, sub-heavy, ambient techno-goes-electro shuffle of 'Tree Frog' and the gorgeously sparkling, slow-motion IDM dreaminess of '700x7'. Prototype 909 is celebrated on side B, with the dreamy deep space chords, bustling breakbeats and psychedelic acid lines of 'Transit' being followed by the pitched-down TB-303 chug of 'Planet S' and the intergalactic IDM laziness of 'Same Place'.

Review: Re:discovery records are a 'chillout' techno label committed to reissuing lost gems from the 1990s and repackaging them for the modern listener. Their sound is downtempo and minimal, usually opting for more experimental post-EBMmy takes on the techno and electro sound. Emblematic of their focus is this new rerelease from Prototype 909 and Facil, 'Excerpts From 1993-1995', which slows many stock techno components down to a snail's pace; '700x7', for example, brings balearic moods to an otherwise bass-heavy kick-centric beat skeleton, the latter of which could otherwise have only come from the post-industrial bassweight that techno brought. 'Transit', meanwhile, is a pinnacle of acid trance. We advise you listen.

Review: Regis and Female's Againstnature album from 2000 gets the full reissue treatment here by Berlin label, Tresor. Released under their given names Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton, the record is a noted zenith of the Birmingham techno scene of the era. It has had a major influence on the music that was released in the years after and has here been remastered for a fresh double vinyl pack. As well as the original sounds, there is also 'Theme From Streetwalke,' a track that was previously released on a Tresor compilation. The tracks are heavy but relatively stripped back. They're packed with texture and atmosphere and never less than hugely compelling.

Review: The Paper Cuts label has been doing a fine job in putting out head-tripping club and chill-out styles for a fair stretch now and following the Ivy mixtape released earlier this year they're back with this outstanding split release from Roza Terenzi and Furious Frank. Terenzi takes the A-side with her trademark line in electro-minded machine funk rhythms powering gorgeous back room moods, keeping the mix dubby and with plenty of ambient sparkle on top of the punchy drums. There's even space for a little d&b trippiness on 'Total Recall', which also features Noff. Furious Frank gets busy on the flip with 'Splash', a blissed out beatdowns with more than a little Balearic magic in its bones, while 'Moss Rock' turns the heat up for a distinctly 90s slice of acid trance. 'Dripp' seals the deal with another low slung roller from the chill-out room of your dreams.
