Arthur - "So Close To You" (4:28)
Future Force - "Reincarnation" (4:28)
Review: The Mighty Zaf and Mark GV Taylor are the deep digging pair behind BBE's such loved Americana compilation from 2014. Now they are back unearthing the goods on this tasty 7". Arthur released only one solo album but its was packed with gold. This single is from it and is a pure blue eyed soul with sweet licks from guitarist Dean Devener and whimsical vocals from Maye Cavallaro. Future Force's 'Reincarnation' was originally the B-side of NYC pop and funk outfit Future Force's only ever single. It's a groovy, funk laced and disco tinged roller.

Review: Original Gravity serve up yet two more contemporary soul tracks; sides A and B on this latest 7" are shared by Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts and Floyd James & The GTs respectively. The A's 'By Hook Or By Crook' recounts the all-to-relatable feeling of stopping at nothing to get what one wants, while 'The Switchback' ups the big beats and big halls for a roomy guit-funk come mod romp. Yet another delight to add to the OG Newtonians' pile.

Best Friend Around - "It's So Good To Know" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:36)
Foster Jackson Group - "Feel The Spirit" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:10)
Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

Galaxy Vol 7: Thelonious Beats Gillespie Edits
Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders - "Soul Food" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (4:34)
Lyn Christopher - "Take Me With You" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (3:28)
Review: If edits are your game then the Galaxy Sound Co is certainly the name. Along other labels like Mukatisuku, these dudes know how to repackage lost and rare soul 7"s, and this new two-headed funk bullet from Thelonious Gillespie is just painfully on target. The first edit is of "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, a moody, dusty percussion bomb brimming with breaks and a grainy guitar accompanied by fine brass waves. Lyn Christopher's "Take Me With You" is pruned and reshaped into a glorious soul ballad with a hard edge, and a driving rhythm led by gliding electronic guitars and an inimitable bassline. Fine work right here.

Celia - "A Hora E Essa" (3:04)
Franco - "Ei, Voce, Psiu!" (2:34)
Review: Two more rare grooves purloined from Cultures Of Soul's Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul and delivered on a sweet 45: Celia's "A Hora E Essa" is a steamy Latin funk workout from 72; all horns, cuicas and soft, honeyed vocals. Franco's "Ei, Voce, Psiu!" takes a more US funk idea with Franco's spoken vocals giving off a strong air of bandleader as the band lock down a tight groove beneath. Watch out for samba flip towards the end. Blink and you'll miss it.

Charms - "Givin' It Up" (3:40)
France Lise - "Pour Moi Ca Va" (3:28)
Review: Favorite Recordings has previously championed revered and little-known Francophile disco and boogie gems, mostly on dedicated compilations curated by dusty-fingered digger Charles Maurice. This '45' marks the launch of a new series along similar lines, with each release boasting two hard-to-find tracks accompanied by their original cover art (one on the front, the other on the back). On side A you'll find 'Give It Up' by Belgian band Charms, a warming and loved-up chunk of boogie/mid-80s soul brilliance stacked with luscious synth sounds, rubbery bass guitar and eyes-closed male lead vocals. Over on the reverse is France-Lise's 'Pour-moi ca ma', a simply superb slab of French language disco blessed with a killer bassline, funky guitar licks and some suitably heady horns. Tres bon!

Drunkenstein - "Beat Down Life Up" (4:53)
Fatlip - "Here Comes The Lip" (remix) (5:17)
Review: Drunkenstein is back on his 7" saga grind with this slow burning banger 'Beat Down Life Up' on the A-side, chopping out a downtempo breakbeat over a seriously groovy yet purposefully monotonous psych-tinged guitar line; the instrumental cut flirts with the jazz-funk meanderings of library music yet retained within the confines of boom-bap subtlety. On the B-side, we get a sleepy remix of Fatlip from The Pharcyde's 'Here Comes The Lip'; smothering the MC's fluid bars under a reverberating break and off-kilter organ samples, with some ever-so-slight dubs applied towards the backend to add another layer of drugged out despondency at odds with the animated yet distantly delivered bars.

Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

Review: Mushroom Pillow is on a proud and so far successful mission to bring back Latin American music from the 60s-80s via its Relatin project. it's all about mixing up the traditional and the modern and putting fresh spins on what went before. Many of the originals they look to have gone unnoticed the first time round and that's the case here as Franc Moody adds his own twist to Elia & Elizabeth's 'Alegria.' His remix is a sympathetic one that gets the hips swinging over fat and funky disco bass and beneath the sunny Latin vocals. He strips them away on the instrumental version on the flip.

Review: The Fabulous 5 were a shortlived hip-hop crew who dropped a couple of killer tracks in the mid 90s before heading in different directions. Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. were on the mic for 'Blah' and 'Leflah', while Tony Moore and Baby Paul were on the buttons. The production on 'Leflah' comes on with a blunted, mellow tip that lands somewhere near Mobb Deep and Gangstarr, while the flows spill out with flair and dexterity. 'Blah' is equally styled, soaked in East Coast intensity and hitting hard, leaving you wondering why we never got to hear more from Fab 5.

Review: This desirable 7" record by Fabio, originally released in 1968 and reissued in 2024, is a true gem of psychedelic rock. With its raw, garage-infused sound, the record transports listeners to the vibrant counterculture era. The title track, 'LSD Lindo Sonho Delirante,' embodies the album's trippy, dreamy atmosphere. Its distorted guitars and hypnotic rhythms create a swirling soundscape that evokes the surreal experiences of psychedelic rock.. 'O Reloginho' offers a more upbeat contrast with its catchy melody and playful lyrics. Fabio's unique blend of psychedelic rock and garage aesthetics makes this album an essential addition to any collector's library. Its rarity and sonic charm will undoubtedly appeal to enthusiasts of the genre.

They head to Japan in October, the same month this special 7" drops with 'Daydream' on one side and a special Japanese version of their 'Track 2' on the other side which has been re-sung in Japanese. Review: Hailing from one of Europe's undisputed capitals of cool - Denmark, albeit Aalborg rather than Copenhagen - The Fabulous Courettes, aka The Courettes, are nothing if not nostalgia driven. No criticism or attempt to label them old hack, as this two track outing proves, their music feels specially made for turntable listening, summoning the spirit of classic US garage rock & roll with just a hint of psyche and 1960s about them.

Perhaps what's most remarkable is the ensemble sound they manage to create with just the two members. This is loud and decidedly epic stuff that goes straight for the heart like the movie soundtrack you've always wanted to hear but never found. Lost in space somewhere between The Ronettes, The Ramones and The Milkshakes, its technicolour guitar goodness for the ears.

Review: Excavated from the personal collection of one Lamont Dozier, little is known about The Fabulous Dynamics besides the sounds found on a one-off acetate six-track demo record. Here are two Big Crown's favourites from the demo; the stripped back, vocal-heavy swoons and harmonies of "Get Hip To Yourself" and the pedigree balled "Every Time I See A Pretty Girl". Raw, honest, and full of promise, this is a pure snapshot of 60s soul, discovered in the collection of one of the most influential songwriters of the time. What a document.

As usual he brings psyched-out sounds, flying saucer synths and a deep cut drum chug on 'Pathfinder Theme' that cannot help but lock you in firmly and mesmerise you for the duration. From his days in electro punks Battant through to engineering in the studio for the who's who of the London scene and an unstoppable succession of great solo releases just like this one, we're always keen to hear what he's up to next. "The Cat Prowls Again" is a hypnotising and majestic serving of disco dancefloor drama that's executed like only such an accomplished engineer and expert of London dancefloors that Fairplay is. Don't Worry 'Bout Later (2012 reissue)
Review: Previously unreleased and coated in a stunning artwork, this limited 7" from Spanish funkateers The Faith Keepers is a must-check for all groove connoisseurs... The band's unique Latin boogaloo fusion is felt in full effect throughout the rather dark title track as we're faced with hurricane vocals, rich textured percussion and a groove so hot it could melt concrete. "Don't Worry Bout Later", meanwhile, sees the band in a slightly deeper frame of mind as a more sun-kissed, Latin soul groove is laid down under more infectious, butt-wriggling percussion. Essential.

Review: Coming through with some storming late 60s vibes, The Faithful Brothers have taken us by storm here at Juno HQ, and this sweet little 7" is like a time-machine back to the days when freedom and hedonism were something to be taken seriously. The group, a new outfit emanating from Germany, launch on the exciting Elb Digger imprint to give the label another fine addition to their increasingly zesty catalogue. "Downtown, Uptown" features Carmi Shimron and her magnetic voice riding high above a sea of fast drum rolls and a vintage soul groove for the lovers; "Night Man" has a bit more of a crescendo to it and, driven by less vocals than the A-side, the tune revels in its horns and brass, retaining that sun-kissed the 60s feel with a bit more of a jazzy twist.

Crying Clown (2:27)
Review: Via the generous Mr. Mellow comes a new 7" record by The Faithful Brothers, a Tel Aviv-based soul band led by Yashiv Cohen. A natural evolution of him and his bandmates' former project, Men Of North Country, the band implicitly asks the question, "is there a Northern Soul scene in Tel Aviv?" - to which the answer is now an enduring yes! 'Dance My Hurt Away' fulfils the niche with a distinctively Hasidic verve, lo-fi yet raucous in its in repeat insistence of "I really don't need you!". 'Crying Clown', on the B-side, meanwhile, nails the complex feelings of heartbreak and absurdity. The coming-together of Johnnie Neeman on guitar, Bin Neeman on piano, and Cohen on vocals is certainly one to place your faith in.

Mars (3:55)
Review: For those too young to remember the days of glitch-house and electro-house at the turn of the noughties (think Herve, Switch, Claude Vonstroke etc), Fake Blood was one of the true masters of the style. He released a swathe of big records for Cheap Thrills and others, with the two tracks collected here - both of which date from 2009 - being the biggest. A-side 'I Think I Like It' is a superb example of the style, with the producer expertly cutting up a pleasingly silly and over-the-top disco-pop number and turning it into sweat-soaked, hands-aloft gold. 'Mars', meanwhile, gains its dancefloor power from a frankly filthy, mind-altering bassline-turned-lead-line, around which crispy drums, breakbeats and Mylo-esque synth stabs make their presence felt.

Review: In 1977, Libyan musician Ahmed Fakroun flew to Milan to record some new material. The results were showcased on a pair of 7" singles, the most sought-after of which is being given the reissue treatment by Italy's Groovin label. The real winner here is "Nisyan", an Arabic interpretation of blue-eyed soul that fixes a baggy, sun-kissed sensibility, ear-catching Moog solos and a killer groove. "La Ya-Hob" is, if anything, even baggier and dreamier, with Fakroun delivering touchy-feely vocals over exotic, Middle Eastern synthesizer lines and a rolling, soft touch jazz-funk groove. Both cuts are equally breezy and jaunty, lingering in the memory for hours after each rotation.

Here they offer up a new edition of its predecessor, which the Lebanese musician recording during the same recording sessions in Milan. With its flanged guitars, lolloping reggae-funk swing, spacey synths and warm bass, "Auidny" is particularly inspired, though the West Coast AOR-influenced warmth of flipside "Njoo El Leyl" is arguably equally as addictive. Stomping drums, big horns and massive harmonies, it's still as sweaty and boisterous as it was 55 years ago. Flip for an interesting 1990 take on one of their most famous cuts "Standing On Guard". Review: On the basis of the material FaltyDL has released with Ninja Tune thus far, his forthcoming third album Hardcourage should rank as one of the more interesting albums to surface in the first quarter of next year. Following the excellent throwback styles of "Hardcourage", the New Yorker showcases his seemingly endless palette of styles with "Straight & Narrow", a wonderfully colourful and vivid sounding production. Dominated by some deft vocal chopping, it's the way these cooing elements intertwine with the beguiling synth noodling and crisp almost handclap style beats that resonates deeply. Both sides of this 45 have went on to become firm underground classics of today. A side "I Wanna Be Loved By You" is a monstrously catchy uptempo disco tune which instantly captivates even the toughest dance floors, regarded by many as a deep house classic even though it is disco from 1980. B side "Please Be Truthful" is a brooding female vocal accompanied by blaxploitation rhythms. Both tunes are desperately sought after and until now virtually unavailable to the public. Original copies of the records will sell for over US$600, this may be the only chance today's DJs have to own this classic record.

Let's Not Start A Fight (Let's Get Down Tonight) (4:40)

Review: Star Creature continues to thrill and inspire with each successive seven-inch single. The label's latest comes from debutants Family of Geniuses, a seven-piece boogie band from Chicago who back heritage influences with brilliant new songs. You'll find a perfect example on the A-side, where "Let's Not Start a Fight" - a sweet, perfectly-pitched boogie club cut that sounds to us like Escort making original electrofunk - sparkles from start to finish. Over on the flipside they doff a cap to the label's roots, offering up a brilliant cover of E Live's "Do Me Like That", the 2015 bomb that helped put Star Creature on the map.

Family Tree (OST Super Disco Break Beat) (3:08)
Review: Way back in 1999, Acid Jazz Records launched an offshoot dedicated to disco edits: Original Sound Track Recordings. The best of the series' many superb reworks were later gathered together on a compilation album on EMI that now changes hands for significant sums online. Happily, they've decided to reissue some of their early releases, beginning with this 7" of Family Tree featuring Sharon Brown's "Family Tree". You'll find the peerless original - a breakbeat-driven chunk of lolloping funk brilliance - on Side A, with the label's 2002 "Super Disco Break Beat" version on the flip. Inspired by hip-hop DJs doubling up the track's brilliant drum breaks, it's a killer percussion workout with a few quick blasts of funk energy and carefully placed special effects (think flanged drums, reversed sections and so on).

Review: Romanian gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia have reached unbelievable heights with their exuberant music, riding high on their successful partnership with Asphalt Tango to bring traditional Balkan wedding music to the masses. The secret to their success is no doubt their ability not to take things too seriously, and so this 7" demonstrates with a uproarious version of Bill Withers' eternal love anthem, 'Just The Two Of Us'. It's the kind of version that would go down a storm at a wedding (perhaps unsurprisingly), but don't sleep on the brilliant B-side, 'The Hungarian Wild Bunch' either!

Come Back (part 1) (2:47)
Come Back (part 2) (2:40)
Review: Here comes a gorgeous bit of Northern Soul from the mid-70s. It was produced by Patrick Adams for The Fantastic Puzzles (who were also known as The Four Puzzles, and simply The Puzzles) in his usual inimitable uplifting fashion and is sure to fill dance floors as freely now as it did back then. The 1976 original will cost you a few quid if you can find one so this reissue is welcome indeed. Both parts are included and are equally joyous: the a-side has lush bass and chords, with soaring vocals and gentle tambourine sounds next to the rousing horns, and the flip keeps on rolling in the same fashion.

The Fantastics! - "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose"
Speedometer feat Ria Currie - "Answer To Mother Popcorn"
Review: Freestyle serve up 2 James Brown tributes as a sampler for the recent Modern Funk compilation. It has been argued that 2007
was the year that the underground funk movement finally started to make its presence known in the mainstream. Huge selling
artists such as Mark Ronson, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse spearheaded a movement towards a more organic and authentic
sound, selling thousands of records in the process and whisking bands, who have been gigging in small sweaty clubs in the UK
for years, off on world tours. The music itself harks back to the golden years of Motown, Watts and Stax, as well as hundreds of
unknown smaller labels, but given the all important production values of the 21st century, making it perfect for the dancefloor -
hence the tag 'Modern Funk'. The a-side finds The Fantastics (previously known as Reverend Cleatus and The Soul Saviours)
getting busy with The Godfather's 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose', sticking pretty close to the original but slapping their unique style
all over it. Over on the flip Speedometer and Ria Currie take on 'Answer To Mother Popcorn', originally a Vicki Anderson number,
giving it a update for the dancefloor in 2008.

Pearl Farano & The High Lights Of Joy with 'Who's Your Boss', a high speed funk gem with in the pocket drum playing and energetic guitar riffs. The real star of course is the coarse vocal that cannot help but light your fires. On the flip, Zella Jackson's vocal soars next to summery flutes and raw, dense rhythm sections.

Review: When Art Farmer and his sextet recorded "Mau Mau" and "Tijuana" in 1953 and 54, it was in cahoots with co-writer and arranger Quincy Jones, then in the early years of his career. Both tracks remain amongst Farmer's most potent tracks, showcasing a style of Latin-influenced trumpet playing that would later be popularized by Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass albums. "Mau Mau" is particularly potent, with Farmer's distinctive trumpet solos rising insatiably above a killer dancefloor groove. "Tiajuana" is a little less revelatory but no less essential, featuring as it does brighter trumpet motifs and jaunty piano lines over a dance-band jazz rhythm. This is the first time either track has been released on a 7" single, making this an essential purchase for jazz aficionados.

Homing in on the most select cuts from the Cavendish Music collection, one of the 60s and 70s' most prized libraries in the UK. One of seven split 7"s to be pressed, this one focuses on the orchestral oeuvre of one Dennis Farnon - one of the most esteemed library musicians to ever live - reinvigorating the spy-thriller, slow guitar-funky 'Trackers' and the alpine-chase-scene-worthy 'Snowmobile'.

This latest release on King Underground's library-focused Cavendish Series cherry picks two particularly wonderful joints from Farnon's catalogue of recorded works, with the brassy funk stomp of 'Pardon' paired against 'Night Driver's hi-octane car chase thrills - both shining examples of the masterful touch Farnon brought to the music he made across an accomplished career.

Review: Signature Brunswick disco soul from 75: Maryann and Satin Soul's "Never Gonna Leave You" tingles with all the best elements of the time; subtle funk twists, big Philly orchestral sweeps and a disco momentum that's powerful enough to absorb Farra's tender vocals. It's backed with "You Got To Be The One" that's more on a pristine soul feel with its swooning harmonies and swaying, spiralling chords. Produced and arranged by Tony Valor, both sides are delicate yet direct and disarming... If they don't set the mood then nothing will.

Review: Fasaan Recordings is a Malmo based vinyl imprint focusing on the more obscure shades of soul, funk, disco and afro related music. The debut single on the label is "Tyrone", a delicious slice of library soul and deep, afro-tinged jazzual grooves with plucked strings, violins and muted brass. On the flip, the pace picks up a notch with label mates Enjebeye's more club friendly ''Ario'' tapping into a more traditional afrobeat groove with throbbing live bass and great brass sections coming across as Sweden's alternative to Quantic Soul Orchestra. Juno is one of the few shops around the world lucky enough to get this labels releases so don't sleep.

Review: Fat Dog make a riveting return to the spotlight with new single 'All The Same'. Following up their 2023 debut 'King Of The Slugs', their latest track is a hardcore stadium-crusher, hadron-colliding motifs of coldwave, EBM and anthem punk for an electronic statement reminiscent of Scalping or Yard Act, but to an end all of their own fashioning. It's no wonder this cold-punk five-piece group of lads are billed as "music to grow your hairline to"; despite the huge sonic histrionics present in their music, the track somehow manages to provoke the release of cortisol and oxytocin in the brain at the same time, nailing that ever so delicate blend of humour and tension.
