  5. Feater - "Cosmic Dust" (6:19)
  6. Abase - "Fallen Statues" (5:56)
Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

  4. Caffeine Is My Passion (5:54)
Review: BPlan & Fab_o made a fine debut on their own Caffee Ciorretto Edits label and now they follow it up with another glistening four tracker. 'Santos' is the bright and breezy opener with a rubbery grove and retro-future chords, then 'Your Coffee' sinks into a more freewheeling, languid groove tinged with Afro exoticism and a steamy vocal. The timeless throwback vibes continue on 'Passione Italiana', another sensuous disco stomper that brings some old school cool, and lastly 'Caffeine Is My Passion' is a funky workout with big hits and cosmic arps racing through the stars.

  4. West Africa (6:32)
Review: A new week, a new edits label, this time from BPlan & Fab_o. It kicks off in fantastic fashion with four edits that will boost your spot no end. There is loose and jumbled afro-disco on "Sweet Brasil" and then stripped back disco-house loops a la early DJ Sneak on "Aroma Club". The flip side again leans on afro for its sunny vibes with "Arabica Selection" and it might be that the best is saved until last. "West Africa" is built on funky bass riffs, with flailing percussion, chunky drums and vocal chants that will lock in any crowd.

Review: Bristol's bass bin botherer and rhythmically playful producer Facta steps up on the label he co-runs with K-Lone for two more of his superbly dialled in dance floor bombs. This ode to real life clubbing kick off with 'Doves' which pairs tripped out sound effects and tropical jungle motifs with a well swung, chunky house groove that comes backed by some serious bass. The second missive is more airy and expansive. 'MPH' blends house and 2-step to dreamy effect with nice rich synths and knocking kick drums that get you up and looking lively.

Review: Record Store Day 2020 keeps on serving up the goods. Next in the spotlight is the iconic 'Sunset (Bird of Prey)' single taken from Fatboy Slim's 2000 album Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. Famously, it samples Jim Morrison's vocal from the Doors song 'Bird of Prey', placing it amongst swirling ambiance and loft synths, while nailing a rugged and broken beat below. On the flip, London's favourite party DJs Horse Meat Disco serve up a Clouds In The Sky remix that has serrated synth lines and jacking drums.

Review: Munich-based jazz quintet Fazer is Simon Popp and Sebastian Wolfgruber, two masterful drummers who distil world music, afro and jazz into their own unique sound. Here one of their cuts get reworked by shamanistic rhythm innovator Azu Tiwaline. 'Sound Measures (part VI-X)' is a n epic excursion into feathery drumming and jumbled percussion that is like tuning into the sound of the jungle itself. The rework is more mysterious, managing o sound like an ancient ritual as well as a future soundscape where sci-fi motifs mix with jazz drums. Stunning.

  4. Ghostwhip - "10:56 PM" (5:14)
Review: The Filament crew are Amsterdam based purveyors of nu-disco, who have returned with the second edition in their electrifying various artists series. The last one featured some awesome tracks by the likes of Kito Jempere and Carrot Green, but on Vol. II there's a Sunday open-air festival vibe. The label head honchos themselves go deep into the exotic, Disco Halal style, on '4:28 PM' and Glowing Palms bring on the sunset in neon-lit fashion on '6:04 PM'. On the flip, Super Drama goes deeper into the night by getting some noir-ish Italo disco vibes happening on '9:37 PM' and Ghostwhip takes over the closing set with a curveball in the form of UK garage influence stepper '10:56 PM'.

Review: FINN's white label series keeps on giving up golden goods and now the third in the project is here. Again limited to 300 copies with no digital and no repress, it's a club-focussed 12" that opens with 'You Know Right', a tune that pairs driving UK drums with a mournful set of chords. 'Love & Or Happiness' is both deep but upbeat, with a great vocal sample stealing the show, and 'Scandalous Little Number' serving up wild, freewheeling chords over unrestrained drum bumps that call to mind classic Moodymann. 'Sweet Little Loop' closes in hi speed, hi sweat, hi soul fashion.

Review: London-based party crew Tessellate are back with the first in a new series of various artist compilations called Teamwork, which aims to have a musical thread running through each release. On the A side, label staple Firmin delivers more of his signature style of mood music on the sensual 'But On Second Thoughts, Perhaps I Will' followed by French producer Karaba's swung and off-kilter tech house adventure 'Vice Versa'. On the flip, Manchester's Aiden Francis delivers the loved up rave energy of 'Cloud Generator' and closing it out is Les Ondes with what the label best described themselves as 'breaky electro' on 'Phase One'.

  1. Stop It (6:18)
  2. Ya Didn't (5:46)
  3. Crowd Control (5:53)
Review: Fisher first made his mark in 2017 with his Dirtybird debut, 'Ya Kidding', but it was his 2018 follow-up, Ya Didn't Go and Do It Again Did Ya, that propelled him towards tech-house superstardom. It was pressed in relatively limited quantities first time around, so Dirtybird has decided to reissue it, this time on translucent vinyl. Arguably the most celebrated of the three tracks is flipside 'Crowd Control', a devilish mix of crunchy drums, druggy bass, mind-mangling electronic riffs, twisted vocal samples and big room friendly build-and-release production. Elsewhere, 'Stop It' is a more rolling, bass-heavy affair that reminded us of mid-2000s Switch productions, and 'Ya Didn't' is a sweaty and bombastic slab of low-slung tech-house hedonism blessed with some surprisingly bluesy vocal samples.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Marylin (7:30)
  2. Farukx (6:34)
Review: Eglo continues to offer up choice reissues of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. The latest to get the treatment is 2011 12" Marilyn, which appeared at a time when Shepherd was just beginning to expand his sound palette following a few years of distinctively-swung deep house singles. The title track still boasts the distinctive, jammed-out synthesizer lead lines that were then a hallmark of his productions, as well as the shuffling house beats that we all love dearly, but also makes use of lots of extra percussion, Motor City-influenced chords and some sweet scat singing. Flipside 'Farukx' is a little more revolutionary, with the Eglo co-founder wrapping jazz-fired broken beats in drowsy chords, twinkling synth sounds and wavy female vocal snippets. Likethe A-side, it's one of Shepherd's best.

Review: Following his appearance on the last 'Glow' collection, Integral welcome young Bristol talent Fluidity to the family with his first full EP. Living up to his name, he takes us from deep soul to deep space across the whole EP. 'Still Hope' is a smouldering lament laced with a Perezian tension, 'Yes Or No' slips on a little black number and purrs in your ear, 'End Game' flips the switch entirely with an all-out turbo drone tear-up before 'Hold Tight' takes us home the scenic intergalactic route. A highly accomplished debut. Stay hopeful.

Flipping some well known mainstream tracks into 170 work-outs, the anonymous producer gives 'My Head Is A Jungle' a kick in the Wankelmuts, upgrades Lana Del Ray into floaty, skippy territory on 'Ride' and gets us all Dizzee and blissed out on 'Blue Lights'. 4. Skies Over Sheffield (John Shima Rainclouds Over Renishaw mix) (6:08)
Review: After acrimoniously parting company with Warp Records - a label they helped to establish - in early 1990, Forgemasters (Rob Gordon, Winston Hazel and Sean Maher) continued recording music, most of which has remained unissued ever since. 'Skies Over Sheffield', which Hazel rediscovered on a DAT tape last year, is one such cut. Featuring typically skittish, electro-influenced drums, weighty sub-bass and a mixture of rave-igniting stabs and picturesque organ motifs, it's a genuine lost classic. The must-have original mix comes backed with a trio of 2020 reworks by Sheffield-based producers: a hardcore influenced breakbeat interpretation by Luca Lozano, a bleeping electro revision by 96 Back, and a rolling, futurist house remix from John Shima.

Now, the co-founder Lee Foss lands back on his home stable with frequent collaborator Anabel England and label regular Detlef. Here they offer up a trippy tune that is deep and bubbly with Englund's vocals layers over the top. Review: Weapons Of Desire kick off what is presumably a new series of various artist releases under the Machine Funk banger, and do so with a right royal collection of dance music punks. Drvg Cvltvre, for example, is a Dutchman who makes dirt, sleaze and noise an art form in his techno tracks, and the brilliantly brainless 'I Hate Thinking' is proof of that. UK hardware lover Perseus Traxx also brings plenty of lo-fi brilliance to his 'Hi-Tech', while Rennie Foster's 'Deposition Acid' achieves some hypnotic brilliance with the 303. Add in more rough and ready excellence from Type-303 and Bad Outfit and you have a hefty EP.

Review: Prins Thomas' Full Pupp imprint turns 15 years old and has marked the occasion by inviting old and new friends to contribute a track each. It's definitely a local affair on the A side, with Mats Frantzvaag (Fuck Reality) serving up the glassy-eyed and bittersweet bliss of ''Soft', followed by Geir Hermansen aka Velferd who takes you on a neon-lit night drive on "Returning". On the flip, we have some seductive mood music courtesy of Jarle Brathen who presents 'Vaguely Wavey' with its hands-in-the-air piano power, and closing it out is boss man Prins Thomas' edit of Kalle Magnus & Daniel's low slung slo-mo disco groove 'Ny, Lang'.

Review: Fred Everything's profile may not be as high as it once was, but he continues to serve up high quality treats - as this surprise collaboration with legendary vocalist Robert Owens proves. The latter is in fine form on the EP-opening 'Classic Mix', a warming, musically detailed chunk of vocal deep house positivity that sounds like it was partially inspired by Dubtribe Soundsystem classic 'Do It Now'. Fred Everything also provides two 'BDTW' mixes on the flip: the fluttering synths sounds and vintage Chicago house grooves of the 'Deep Mix', and a more stripped-back 'Vox Dub'. Best of all though is Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson's rework, which recalls the fluid synth sounds, jazzy flutes and intricate percussion programming that marked out his early 2000s work on Mantis Recordings.

Review: Minneapolis, circa 95, a young Frederick Freshton smooths down his dapper moustache and experiments with a small but perfectly formed collection of machines. The results remain on DAT for almost 25 years... Until today. Fresh to Assemble Music in every sense, both sides explore very specific vibes. 'Catching Up Winning' and 'Careless' are both stripped back acid techno wildebeests with hard-as-nails kicks and sinewy, spidery grooves while 'Cannibal Groove' and 'His 808' echo with breakbeats he would later become best known for. Pure, honest, simple and timeless.

No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

Review: Samosa has had a fine year in 2020 and still has time to squeeze out one more vital disco offering. Following on from afrocentric Souldynamic and C. da Afro releases for the 19th volume of their VA compilation, this time drafted in is Mexican producer The Funk District who serves up four dazzling gems. High energy sounds, 70s film references, Latin flair and cosmic disco all feed into these tracks which are packed with bristling good times, feel good grovers and plenty of hands in the air moments. For us, 'La Rapina' is straight Latin dance floor gold that takes the EP's top slot.

  5. Weg Vom Leder (4:54)
Review: A veteran of the Berlin electronic music scene, Sascha Funke is no stranger to local expatriates Multi Culti, debuting for them back in 2016 with the terrific In Relationen EP. For his latest outing, he paris up with multi-instrumentalist Niklas Wandt, one half of Gehoelzpflege, for some trippy and low slung sonic shenanigans on the Kreidekreis EP. From the slo-mo tribal trance of opening cut 'Kometenschweif' which will propel you into the cosmos in vertically locomotive fashion, followed by the funky sundown nu-disco of the title track which receives a wicked rework by Alexander Arpeggio up next - taking the track into psyched-out lounge territory. Also on the remix is Neapolitan Whodammanny, channelling '80s Neue Deutsche Welle sounds, German vocals to boot, on a rendition of 'Kometenschweif'.

Tropical Pressure Vol 1
  1. Guy One - "Bangarre Tomme" (6:25)
  2. Faith Mussa - "Ngoma" (4:38)
  3. Guided Souls - "Freedoms Light" (4:48)
  4. Orchestre Les Mangelepa - "Kanemo" (No Nation dub) (5:33)
Review: The cursed global pandemic may have put paid to this year's Tropical Pressure festival in Cornwall, but thanks to this first compilation style EP from its' new offshoot label, we can now recreate the event's humid, colourful musical vibe in our own homes. The selections are naturally top-drawer, with the heavy tropical Afro-funk of Guy One's EP-opening 'Bangarre Tomme' brilliantly setting the tone. Faith Mussa impresses with the deliciously positive and sun-kissed 'Ngoma' - all rubbery bass, JuJu style guitars and bouncy beats - while Guided Souls get hot and heavy on the raw and fuzzy Afro-house of 'Freedoms Light'. We'd also recommend checking out the 'No Nations Dub' of 'Kameno' by No Nations Orchestra, a sun-bright slab of audio sunshine rich in glistening guitars and punchy horns.

  2. Viceversa - "Eye's Cat" (7:42)
  3. Fabrizio Maurizi - "Peace Of Mind" (6:28)
  4. Vincent Casanova - "Cypress Chill" (6:57)
Review: Based in Barcelona, Skip Audio is a fresh vinyl-only label that, if this debut release is anything to go by, could deliver some seriously ear-catching tech-house tracks in the months and years ahead. That's a lofty claim for sure, but we'd argue that the four cuts showcased on this EP are worthy of such lavish praise. Check first the crunchy drums, snaking bass and watery electronic motifs of Giuliano Lomonte's 'Versatile', before admiring the slowly pulsing pads, rising and falling melodies and snappy beats of Viceversa's wonderfully tuneful and sunny 'Eyes Cat'. Fabrizio Maurzi offers something a little tougher, darker and chunkier in the shape of 'Peace of Mind', while Vincent Casanova doffs a cap to the sci-fi sounds of early UK tech-house on spacey closer 'Cypress Chill'.

  3. Panama Cardoon - "Ibara" (7:30)
  4. Ziggy Phunk - "Ukudansa" (5:58)
Review: The first record from Athens-based label Bonfido Disques drew plenty of love thanks to its canny spread of globally-minded edits and reworks, not least from Sirhan's simply delightful flute flex. The good news is the same producer leads the charge on this second round with an Afrobeat-laced banger that keeps the energy and spirit of the musical alive. Fixed Angles turns up the heat with a disco/Chicago house stomp, thumping away underneath 'Anikana', while Panama Cardoon keeps the tempo feisty and the vibes summery on 'Ibara'. Ziggy Phunk finishes the record off with the snappy, Shangaan-licked 'Ukudansa'.
