  1. The Advent & Zein - "Eye's Of Envy" (5:49)
  2. Exzakt - "Kreep" (5:59)
  3. 214 - "Crouch & Turn" (5:41)
  4. EggFooYoung - "Bass2Large" (3:20)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Exzakt continues to forge one of the purest totems of classic electro with his Monotone label, and indeed his own output. The latest release is a various artists EP which perfectly sums up everything Monotone is about. The Advent leads the way with the dark, melodic "Eye's Of Envy," produced alongside Zein, before Exzakt himself drops a taut and wiry dancefloor bomb in the shape of "Kreep." 214 fires up the B side with the edgy, minimalist thrust of "Crouch & Turn," before EggFooYoung makes a surprise return to the fray with the more Miami-flavoured stylings of "Bass2Large," a slower, dirtier jam with low end frequencies to get the whole club freaking.

  3. Egopusher - "Flake" (Jimi Jules remix) (6:25)
  4. Ed Ed & Petja Virikko - "Sundroina" (feat Jinadu - Jimi Jules remix) (7:18)
Review: Zurich based DJ and producer Jimi Jules is one of the most promising upcoming artists within the international underground. With previous releases on top labels like Superfriends, Cocoon and local imprint Zukunft - he tops all that by being picked as selector for esteemed Berlin institution Watergate's 24th mix album. Here we get treated to a few exclusives from the mix on special vinyl format: on the first side we have Jules & Jesaya's +4 BPM Update of Ame's "119 BPM", there's also his collaboration with Domenico Ferrari on the sleazy lo-slung pop of "Parkuhr". On the flip, we soon discover its almost entirely a Jimi Jules affair (naturlich!) with his remix of Swiss/German duo Egopusher's "Flake" (venturing into truly sublime territory) and the dreamy and bittersweet tones of Ed Ed & Petja Virikko's "Sundroina" (feat Jinadu).

  2. Paolo Rocco - "Ill" (7:58)
  3. Moises - "Easy Beauty" (6:33)
  4. Esposito & Nadje - "HBP" (7:46)
Review: Crew love is true love: Beste Freunde 05 is upon us and it's not likely to hang around. Once again it's a whole new collective of like-minded souls together for a fresh expedition. Anil Aras leads the mission with a rippling Detroitian understated number simply called "Track 1". He's flanked by Paolo Rocco and Moises. The former ups the temperature and gets us in a lather with the insistent pace of "Ill" while the latter sooths our souls and oils our joints with the slippery hypnosis session "Easy Beauty". Finally Esposito & Nadje run point with the heaviest tool of the trip - the bubbling technoid "HBP". Friends till the end!

  2. Timmo - "Muzik" (6:11)
  3. Pig&Dan - "La Bruja" (6:37)
  4. Julian Jeweil - "Nasa" (6:11)
Review: Some serious peak time weapons for the main room on offer here, from the ever reliable Swedish label Drumcode. Usual heroes of the label such as Luigi Madonna, Sam Paganini and Joseph Capriati step aside for some other equally reliable staples. On the A, side label boss Adam Beyer teams up with Enrico Sangiuliano on the evocative and life affirming "Preset Heaven" which takes its cues from early trance with its amazing chord progression. It is something more typical of the label next, on the pummelling warehouse stomp of "Muzik" by Bulgaria's Timmo. On the flip, there's more trance nostalgia on offer again - this time from legends Pig & Dan on the hypnotic/melodic bliss of "La Bruja" which we could imagine melting the minds of festival crowds well into the new year. Finally they save the best for last with French peak time specialist Julian Jeweil, serving up the furious, tunneling and strobe-lit ultraviolence of "Nasa" which will have your adrenaline going from the first beat. It has been a stellar year for the powerhouse label, with great releases by Moby, Dubfire and newcomer Layton Giordani.

Review: Flipping heck! Soul Flip invite everyone's favourite big glasses wearing editor DJP to the fold for some twists on two seminal, genre-affirming party joints. James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" gets a cheeky beat facelift with a fresh set of peppy breaks while Eddie Floyd's tree chopping sing-along enjoys a similar mix-friendly shake-up with a slower, roomier drum arrangement ensuring all the power of the '67 original is kept in check. Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

  2. Ersatz Olfolks - "Straight Road"
  3. Hector Oaks - "Move In Circles, Walk On Lines"
  4. Thomas Hessler - "Memories"
Review: The Bassiani label is the platform for the infamous Georgian club to present its sound to the wider world, and it does so in fantastic fashion with this run of various artist releases. This fourth release kicks off with the dark, textured and brilliantly rendered techno immersion of Cassegrain's "Departure Seven", while Ersatz Olfolks gets a little more heated with the strafing synth work that courses out of "Straight Road". Hector Oaks is also in a rowdy frame of mind with the peak time belter "Move In Circles, Walk On Lines", and it's down to Thomas Hessler to cool things off with the heart-rending electro of "Memories".

Review: You should know by now that Plastik People is the go-to spot for the most upfront garage house done in a classic style, and they're spelling it out good and proper with The Sound Of Garage House. Marc Cotterell leads the way with the jazzy vibes and deliciously liquid chords of "Those Days" before Ed The Spread brings a nagging shuffle and sharp string stabs to hard-stepping bumper "The Bauhaus Movement". Grant Nelson keeps things tuff with the natty piano hooks and diva slices of "Move Close" while Rocket Dubz ups the funk to 11 for hands in the air party starter "Dirty Bath".

  2. Dane & Khotin - "System" (5:23)
  3. Dane - "I Want More" (7:34)
  4. Eddie C - "One For Dane" (4:13)
Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.

Conjuring up the perfect recipe for a DJ Cake, Central blends and explores the likes of pulsating atmospheric techno on the track "Balast", smoothly escalating breaks on "Ko Ko Dak Dak" and hazy crackling ambient on the finale "Daeksel". Review: New label Nuances de Nuit kick off in fine style with a various artists 12" that draws on some emergent names to lay out a vision of cross-style dance music that favours the deeper end of the pool. Things get going with an organ-rich house bumper from DJ Steaw that pumps in all the right places, before Armless Kid switches things up with an untitled slice of dynamic, richly layered electro. T. Jacques thumps out a crafty, swinging cut with techy inclinations and oodles of groove, and E. Wan takes things in a more linear, deep techno direction laden with gorgeous synth work and plenty of artful effects processing.

On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. 1. Kahn (11:11)
  2. Mingo (10:25)
Review: E Versions is a brand new edit-focused offshoot of Merc, seemingly allowing label boss Mark E an outlet for some of his unreleased reworks. Given the title, the spotters out there might easily guess what the source material for "Kahn" is, and it immediately calls to mind all those great reworks the Midlands-based producer did for Jiscomusic, Running Back and Golf Channel in the pre-disco edit flood era. It's complemented by the B-Side track "Mingo" which is much more indicative of the brand of hypnotic machine music Mark E is currently specialising in, and will appeal to fans of drums!!!

  1. Magazine
  2. Xam
Review: Earlier this year, Mark E returned to the re-edit scene in which he made his name with the first E Versions 12". For those who remember his brilliant early work on Jisco Music and Golf Channel - all hypnotic disco loops and slow-house attitude - it was something of a surprise treat. Here he delivers more clandestine reworks in a similar vein, delivering two deliciously hypnotic, drawn-out grooves that transform familiar favourites into wide-eyed Balearic chuggers. "Magazine" is particularly potent since it slows down and smacks out Madonna's "Vogue", in the process turning the track into a creeping endorphin blast of epic proportions. "Xam" ups the tempo slightly, building the action around baggy accordion samples and rising and falling melodies.

Review: Yes, it's time for another slice of Mark E(dit) goodness on his own E Versions label, and every time one of these bad boys has always been on point. Number 6 in the series certainly doesn't disappoint, and the soulful waves of "Scared" are so close in line with the sort of house we're digging at the moment, that we've been playing it for hours on the Juno HQ turntable. "Plastic People", surely an ode to the legendary London club, takes house as a structure, but goes much deeper and wilder thanks to elements of jazz, funk and deep, sweltering soul music. Mark E never ceases to please and amaze simultaneously.

Review: One of the most consistent harbingers of the broken beat this year, Nomine Sound introduce a brand new project from Asif Kid and Slimzee in the form of E3 Breaks. Exploring the murky 140 waters between breaks, garage, dubstep and jungle, both cuts gel a whole host of soundsystem genres together with their caustic, barbed wire beats; "The Curse" is a moody halftime grumbler with roots in dub but its heart in jungle while "Backroads" is a rampant roller that's not dissimilar to the early Botchit releases around 20 years ago. Sparse, sci fi and slippery.
