He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Here Kero Uno remixes a couple of his tunes and ups their funky quotient to make them more suitable to dancefloors. Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: Omar S does what he wants, so we are often treated to some surprises on his FXHE label that come seemingly out of nowhere. If they come with his stamp of approval, though, that is enough for us to find them intriguing, at the very least. This one is from Dastardly Kids aka Sonny Dulphi and Pat2Dope and they bring hi tech styles to hip-hop. The sounds are raw and twisted, with spoken-word bars over dense layers of synth and drums on opener '4 Every Day Dastardly'. There is a metallic feel to the icy cold and sleazy beats of 'Bu$$ The Bank', more depth to 'Pesos' which has a cloud rap vibe and more stoned and late night vibes to 'Dastardly Love Song'. A fresh double 7" for sure.

Review: Davie is a brand new singing for Defected who grew up with a father who was a pastor in the local church. That is where he eventually start this own journey and with elements of Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson added in, he now lands with a fully formed, heart swelling soul sound. It is an indie exclusive via Chrysalis and comes as much of the American pioneers back catalogue has been made available for the first time digitally and via several vinyl reissues. It came about after the label head wondered how Lisa's songs would sound if Japanese jazz trio Nautilus arranged some of them. They have, and here are the results, a very personal new single off a great new album. 'Everytime' is tieless funk with a super sweet and innocent vocal over crisp drums. On the flip is a remix that takes it in new directions with Pat Van Dyke, a longtime known producer and multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey, at the helm. Review: For those in the know, this new collab between veteran Portuguese DJ and producer Dedy Dread and fast-rising Hawaiian singing star Olivia Ruff has been a long time coming. But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. It's accented with wispy chords, neat little guitar riffs and crunchy claps. Flip it over and you'll find a remix by label founder The Rebel and Roman pianist and producer Shiny D. Their version is a modern update with brilliant reggaeton rhythms.

Review: Deejay Skamrok kicks off this own new self titled label with a a live session. 'Piece fo the Rock 1 & 2' is a breaks mix sampler featuring a selection of beats from the full length mixes. The a-side is all mad scratching and raw breaks with yelp gin vocal stabs and some tight as you like funk drumming. It's a red hot joint designed to blow up the floor. Flip it over and there is a more jazzed up sound. Here the tinny steel drums dart about the mix with more essential cop that starts off the label on a fine footing.

Review: The EastSide Edits label outta Canada is here to provide big moments of fun for jobbing DJs. Their first EP sold out in quick fashion because of the irresistible nature of the mash-ups it contained. Now comes a second volume, this time in the form of a couple of edits. Demiur's Jacked Payboi edit of his own take on massive rap hit 'WAP' is smoothed out into a chunky house groove with all the controversial original lyrics from Cardi B and Megan the Stallion left in place. Review: 'Debes Llorar' is the second of two super limited 7"s being dropped by Dez Andres on the fledgling Future Rootz label this month. Like the other one, this 45 pulls out plenty of the Cuban influences Dez is known for. A-side 'Debes Llorar' is all life-affirming chords that fans of his classic 'New 4 U' will recognise, but stitched over ticking and raw drum beats with a Latin shuffle and Spanish vocals. 'Aqui Estamos' takes things down a notch with a more sunset sound, hip-hop flecked deep house beats and seductive vocal sounds next to gorgeous little acoustic guitar riffs.

Review: EDdits master DJ Bacon returns for two of his boxiest yet on the usual 7". Bacon's production style betrays a kind of Buddhist mindfulness, or at least a minimalism, in its approach; all you need is a good beat, ever-so-slightly abstracted from its original context, to arouse the excitations of both mind and body. The fact of not knowing the sample's origin is part of the art; this condition of not knowing fetishises the breakbeat, by partially obfuscating knowledge of where the sample came from. Titles like 'Sardines Is The Word' and 'TF Megamix' are likely coded allusions to these original desiderata, but only the most hardened connoisseurs, a secret club in which Bacon and a select few others surely fraternise, would know exactly which sample sources these are. Thus we have the continued recreation of DJ Bacon as a purveyor of cool; one which enables us to enjoy the slick roundedness of these beats more than we would if the game was given away.

Review: Chicago-bred, now Brooklyn-based beatmaker DJ Rude One is by now a firm part of the underground hip-hop scene He made his biggest impression with 2016 LP ONEderful which picked up critical acclaim and plenty of fans as well as shining a light on new names like Westside Gunn who have also become stars in their own right. 'Re:Strain Of Stairs', as the title suggests, reinterprets the song 'Strain Of Stairs' by Japanese rock band The Pillows on the A-side, bringing a loose-hipped drum workout to the ordeal. Review: Modern hip-hop production titan Djar One returns with a fresh 7", 'It's The Funk', with fellow stalwarts Venomous2000 and DJ Tron both coming through for neat verses and flippages respectively. While Djar's A-side is nicely gritty, getting at that West Coast, gangster-funk-whistly, top-dropped steeze with ease, DJ Tron's version provides a completely alternate jazzhop take, stripping back the track to its bare bones and preferring to let the mood flow rather than stomp.

It's a sound as old as time but one that never ages. Review: Hole In One is a label that's not mucking about. It is seeing up top quality tunes at a fairly busy rate and this sixth one is another joy to the ears of hip-hop lovers. Drunkenstein is the man in charge and he kicks off with the sunny sounds and dusty breaks of 'Live The Good Life' before 'Lean Back' is a much deeper, slower, more jazzy joins for the afters. 'Koi Song' toys with golden era boom bap and some pensive piano chords while a strange lead brings an almost country twist. Review: Drunkenstein is back on his 7" saga grind with this slow burning banger 'Beat Down Life Up' on the A-side, chopping out a downtempo breakbeat over a seriously groovy yet purposefully monotonous psych-tinged guitar line; the instrumental cut flirts with the jazz-funk meanderings of library music yet retained within the confines of boom-bap subtlety. On the B-side, we get a sleepy remix of Fatlip from The Pharcyde's 'Here Comes The Lip'; smothering the MC's fluid bars under a reverberating break and off-kilter organ samples, with some ever-so-slight dubs applied towards the backend to add another layer of drugged out despondency at odds with the animated yet distantly delivered bars.

Review: The Hole In One label follows up its good early work with a third vital 7", this time in the form of a split between Drunkenstein and Suns of Man. The former goes first on 'Super Tuff Killer Tune' which is a spaced out, downbeat exploration of deep space with nice chord work and crisp hits. It's cinematic and atmospheric in equal measure and then on the flip, Drunkenstein remixes Sunz Of Man's 'Natural High.' The bristling beat work and splashy cymbals keep a cool vibe while the hard hitting verses add an extra edge. These are two very different sides of vinyl, but both hit a super sweet spot.

Review: Dresden label Cold Diggin has been a consistent outlet for the work of The Duke Ya Love To Hate, which is one of several different aliases that Stefan Senf choses to work under. Usually they serve up just one of his special 7" outings per year but in 2023 two are arriving in December. This one comes on a hand-numbered 7" in screen-printed sleeve and is limited to just 150 copies. A-side jam 'Cold Wire' is a lively mix of breaks, jazzy chord stabs and plunging bass, then 'Cold Strut' slows things down and builds on a familiar funk break and top line melody in alluring new ways.

Review: The Cold Diggin label out of Dresden has long been serving up the work of The Duke Ya Love To Hate, which is one of myriad aliases of an artist who gets by the name of Stefan Senf. They are generally few and far between but are always worth copying when they do drop and this one comes on lovely hand-numbered 7" in a special screen-printed sleeve. 'Introducin' is a loose-limbed funk workout with classic hip-hop breaks and free-wheeling pads. 'Prescribin' is more slow and seductive with its florid melodic leads and lovely lazy beats.

Review: After four decades in the game, Chicago original Mike Dunn knows a thing or two about serving up killer, party-staring house cuts. He's at it again on his latest outing for the reborn Nu Groove label, offering up a quartet of ear-catching, peak-time ready treats. On 'Git'cha House On' Dunn goes straight for the jugular, joining the dots between UK interpretations of hip-house and Kraftwerk-influenced Windy City house, before opting to add another of his part sung, part rapped vocals to a rolling, piano-sporting good time groove on 'Don't Pay Me No Mind'. Over on side B, 'Rock Ya Body (Deepa)' is a glossy, classic-sounding and percussively energetic big room workout, while 'Le'tcha Love Fall Down On Me' is deep, dreamy, energetic and lusciously loved up.

Review: Crossing the pond, UK-based DJ and producer Dan Greenpeace teams back up with Diamond D, a legendary rapper and producer from New York. The result is 'Nowhere To Run To', a hard-hitter gangsta rap anthem espousing a "trust no-one" headspace - "keep the grass cut low so you can see the snakes" - against a heavy, scratchy, paranoid horrorcore instrumental. Whether or not the classic 1965 song by Martha Reeves was kept in mind, Diamond D's trademark flow glides over Greenpeace's boom-bap production just as effortlessly as Reeves' did back then, expressing similar sentiments of entrapment and fate.

Review: vBlack Buffalo's beefy reggae offerings are irresistibly tasty and this new Special Love 7" is a limited offering from the upcoming DJ Moves album. For special love he links up with 'Jah'Mila' which mixes classic rhythms with some crisp drums and steely digital dub aesthetics. The vocal brings a fresh approach as it twists and turns in emotive fashion. DJ Move goes solo for the flip side instrumental and works the mixing board hard, with spaced out effects and plenty of headiness. It's a great taster for the album ahead.

Review: Scaring The Hoes was the 2023 collaborative record by unequivocal avant-hip-hop crown bearers Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA. The album was almost instantly met with widespread critical acclaim, most notably for its weird use of contemporary political imagery in music videos (frequently Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un, for some reason) and its staunch defiance of the misogynistic injunction to "stop scaring the hoes" with weird, left-of-centre music. Now comes the 'DLC' and/or 'expansion pack' version of the album, which includes four exclusive new mixes from the album sessions; Brown shines on an ultra-kooky, SFX-laden intro, 'Guess What Bitch, We Back Hoe!', followed by the crackly soul-bap of 'Hermanos' and the crossticking lo-fi of 'Tell Me Where To Go'. Closer 'No! No! No!' presents an incredible gospel timestretch-spaghettification, over which a medley shared between both MCs makes their enduring talents ever more apparent.

Review: The first instalment of Krafty Kuts and DJ Robert Smith's latest six-tracker 'Krafty Smith' - which comes split into three collectable vinyl versions for you to obsessively froth at the mouth over and thus acquire - hears two of this turntablism-via-production master-duo's best works come to waxen light. With the instrumentals here completed before help was enlisted, the first to receive a rap contribution was 'Here I Come', featuring Wildelux, who on request delivered his bars in no time. This vision was strengthened as more feature requests followed: Slimkid3 thereafter took Moonbeam Kelly on board for 'This Fear'. Within an impressively short timeframe, a masterpiece of first-class artistry was conceived.

Krafty Kuts is known for his unique beats from hip-hop to ghetto funk, while DJ Robert Smith is more known for his scratches and turntable work. It's a super tidy 7" with two very different sounds on each side. The first is Mr Doris & D-funk's 'New York Kiss' which is a low slung hip hop joint with East Coast bars and psyched-out guitars.
