Review: Danny Brown, Haza, Suspect, and Ghetts all feature on the No Reign No Flowers EP with D Double E, who himself is one of the UK's finest rap talents. From radio sets to early raves, big hits to top work in the field of jungle, grime and garage, he has done it all and then some (including writing the original track for the viral IKEA Christmas Advert, don't you know). He shows his class again here with seven superb cuts that keep his signature style front and centre despite the big guests. Big up to a UK great.

Be Great (3:45)
Be Great 2 (4:01)
Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. The rhymes are slowed and stretched to match and the whole tune has an aspirational mood that permeates you're being. 'Be Great 2' is continuation that seals the deal.

Didn't I (feat Cerebral Vortex - 1773 remix) (4:05)
Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: There is a wealth of De La Soul music swirling about right now - much of it has been added to digital streaming sites for the first time and just as much is being reissued and repressed on vinyl from their full-length albums to some of their standout single. And few tunes the American hip-hop group put out are as great as this one - 'The Magic Number' is their signature hit, a happy mix of flower-power verses, colourful rhythms and captivating hip hop grooves laden with funk. An essential jam to own on this tidy 7", backed with an instrumental.

Review: Deejay Skamrok kicks off this own new self titled label with a a live session. 'Piece fo the Rock 1 & 2' is a breaks mix sampler featuring a selection of beats from the full length mixes. The a-side is all mad scratching and raw breaks with yelp gin vocal stabs and some tight as you like funk drumming. It's a red hot joint designed to blow up the floor. Flip it over and there is a more jazzed up sound. Here the tinny steel drums dart about the mix with more essential cop that starts off the label on a fine footing.

Double A - "Oh My God" (Double A's Mid Tempo Rewor) (3:53)
Review: The EastSide Edits label outta Canada is here to provide big moments of fun for jobbing DJs. Their first EP sold out in quick fashion because of the irresistible nature of the mash-ups it contained. Now comes a second volume, this time in the form of a couple of edits. Demiur's Jacked Payboi edit of his own take on massive rap hit 'WAP' is smoothed out into a chunky house groove with all the controversial original lyrics from Cardi B and Megan the Stallion left in place. On the flip is a big, shimmering disco epic in the form of Double A - 'Oh My God' (Double A's Mid Tempo Rework).

Review: 'Debes Llorar' is the second of two super limited 7"s being dropped by Dez Andres on the fledgling Future Rootz label this month. Like the other one, this 45 pulls out plenty of the Cuban influences Dez is known for. A-side 'Debes Llorar' is all life-affirming chords that fans of his classic 'New 4 U' will recognise, but stitched over ticking and raw drum beats with a Latin shuffle and Spanish vocals. 'Aqui Estamos' takes things down a notch with a more sunset sound, hip-hop flecked deep house beats and seductive vocal sounds next to gorgeous little acoustic guitar riffs.

Review: Mash up crew unite! This new and limited 7" from Alloy Cuts is pure bait for those who like to pack a dancefloor with classic hip-hop sounds all mixed and mashed up. Slick Rick's 'Children's Story' provides the hoping bass and drums here while Kelis's most iconic refrain sits up top next to see other rude raps. This new 7" packs in five fine beats from a mix of artists, namely DJ Robert Smith, Marc Hype, Naughty NMX and Jim Sharp. DJ Thadz is one of them and is a Windy City veteran known for his dynamic DJ sets and high-energy productions. The artist is well versed in subtly reworking the classics, bringing them up to date and adding his own unique flavour. He opens this limited 7" with 'Damn Right I Hit Em Up' which rides rough over a tight bass riff, with biggie's raps up top and a big beat pumping the vibe. Review: Legendary turntablist and acclaimed beat maker DJ Yoda is back with a new album Prom Nite this month. Just before the full-length drops comes this single from it on essential 7". It follows on from the well-received 'Feel Like Home' 45rpm last month and this time offers more well-conceived and carefully sought-out fusions. The a-side 'My Energy' features Eva Lazarus. It is a lovely soulful slow jam that has a breakup melancholy to it and lovely doo-wop vibes. He announced it and teased the sounds to expect with Feel Like Home - a new single featuring the incredible House Gospel Choir. It's a single that gets you up off the floor after sad news and was recorded in the depths of lockdown. Review: DJ Yoda is a pioneering turntables, scratch DJ and hip-hop master who has defined all those scenes for more than 20 years. For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. As well as the original, an instrumental is included on the flip. Both sides of this one hit different. Must cop.

Review: The dream team Dogger & Mindstate return to TNQ wax with this hearty package of soulful, hip-hop-influenced D&B flavours that was originally unleashed digitally last summer. Representing both their pathways into this music, from north to south, the duo recruit the likes of London's Verbz and Manchester's Sleazy F Baby to vocal and narrate their delicate, subtle but ultimately heavyweight rhythms. From the deep jazz of 'Different Roads' to the symphonic dynamics of 'From The Concrete', this is one of the hardest hitting and emotional records Dogger and Mindstate have made so far.

It is Dooley O who is on the buttons with 'Stick Yourself' bringing those old school flavours, spin backs, golden era boom bap and playful mic work. This Is How We Do (remix) (2:51)
Review: Hole In One is a label that's not mucking about. It is seeing up top quality tunes at a fairly busy rate and this sixth one is another joy to the ears of hip-hop lovers. Drunkenstein is the man in charge and he kicks off with the sunny sounds and dusty breaks of 'Live The Good Life' before 'Lean Back' is a much deeper, slower, more jazzy joins for the afters. 'Koi Song' toys with golden era boom bap and some pensive piano chords while a strange lead brings an almost country twist. A remix of MC Gruff's 'This is How We Do' is last up and maybe the EP's highlight.

Drunkenstein - "Beat Down Life Up" (4:53)
Fatlip - "Here Comes The Lip" (remix) (5:17)
Review: Drunkenstein is back on his 7" saga grind with this slow burning banger 'Beat Down Life Up' on the A-side, chopping out a downtempo breakbeat over a seriously groovy yet purposefully monotonous psych-tinged guitar line; the instrumental cut flirts with the jazz-funk meanderings of library music yet retained within the confines of boom-bap subtlety. On the B-side, we get a sleepy remix of Fatlip from The Pharcyde's 'Here Comes The Lip'; smothering the MC's fluid bars under a reverberating break and off-kilter organ samples, with some ever-so-slight dubs applied towards the backend to add another layer of drugged out despondency at odds with the animated yet distantly delivered bars.

Sunz Of Man - "Natural High" (Drunkenstein remix) (4:14)
Review: The Hole In One label follows up its good early work with a third vital 7", this time in the form of a split between Drunkenstein and Suns of Man. The former goes first on 'Super Tuff Killer Tune' which is a spaced out, downbeat exploration of deep space with nice chord work and crisp hits. It's cinematic and atmospheric in equal measure and then on the flip, Drunkenstein remixes Sunz Of Man's 'Natural High.' The bristling beat work and splashy cymbals keep a cool vibe while the hard hitting verses add an extra edge. These are two very different sides of vinyl, but both hit a super sweet spot.

Review: The Du-Rites is a superb funk combo based in New York City with Jay Mumford (no, not that Mumford) on drums, keys and bass guitar and Pablo Martin on guitar, bass guitar and keys. They have been turning out the jams now for almost a decade and 'Go Funk Me' on Od Maid is their latest. The short but sweet A-side rides on a deep cut funk rhythm that is softened by some fluttering flutes, though the baritone spoken words being a hint of menace next to the organ chords. For special love he links up with 'Jah'Mila' which mixes classic rhythms with some crisp drums and steely digital dub aesthetics. The vocal brings a fresh approach as it twists and turns in emotive fashion. DJ Move goes solo for the flip side instrumental and works the mixing board hard, with spaced out effects and plenty of headiness. It's a great taster for the album ahead.

The lead single, featuring the late rapper DMX, gets a whopping 3 different versions, while the equivalent of a small album follows. 'Illegal Laser Gun Dealer', 'Adorable Baby Dragon' and 'Stolen Tuk Tuk' effortlessly capture Green's keen sense oforf neofuturist hodgepodge, as crackly library samples, emotive wonk-bap progressions and far-Eastern movements abound.

Review: Danno is the renegade master of Roman hip-hop and is part of the pioneering underground crew Colle Der Fomento. The Rebels instrumentals form the basis of his rhymes here while New York hip hop duo The Good People also appear on track two, 'Body Rockin', to bring some classic US styles to this package. Their tune is then remixed by another Italian hip hop legend on Ice One. This then is a package that brings together two different worlds, one more well known than the other for its hip hop, but the Italian team really do represent here and the whole thing fits together like two sides of the same NYC subway line.

Review: The Pimpala West Coast Classics series does exactly what it says on the label, delivering tidy 7" singles featuring new edits of much-loved 90s West Coast hip-hop gems. This time round, the scalpel fiend at the controls is Ronnie Frazzle. He first turns his attention to Snoop's Dr Dre-produced mega-hit 'Gin & Juice', a delightfully laid-back 1993 number that's often cited as one of the finest moments of hip-hop's "golden era". Over on the flip it's all about DJ Quik's 1992 Profile Records single 'Jus Lyke Compton', an even more laid-back and groovy affair that pays tribute to the notorious LA neighbourhood that became the focal point of the enormous "gangsta" hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

Now the label serves up an album dedicated to his memory from Aver, who created the first draft of it between finding out about Joey's passing and attending his funeral. It features collages of conversations the two had next to previously unreleased material he made during lockdown with Doron Segal. The result is an album of catharsis and musical therapy, that features both light and dark, hope and despair. The finished album features cuts by Jazz T, Evil Ed and Omas, as well as additional voice messages donated by Kuartz and Matt Smith.

It comes on the band's home label of First World and bares plenty of their signature sonic hallmarks - dusty, undercooked production, lazy hip hop beats, and gorgeous vocals that sit somewhere between neo soul, golden era boom-bap from Tribe and something else a little unique. It's a warm world where yearning bars, lush harmonies and hooky melodies all float around the stripped back but bumping beats. Superb stuff.

Review: It's been 17 years since Danger Mouse's last hip-hop album - the epic collaboration with the late great MF Doom. For the first time since 2005, we have a new one, Cheat Codes, to get stuck into following collabs with Daniele Lupi and Karen O and some production work with Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz. It is a triumph, too, with tough beats uplifting while the rapper lays down endless bars that are free for choruses. It is a mix of the new school and the old school that is utterly, typically, intoxicating.

Review: Never Enough is a much anticipated and long-awaited third album from Daniel Caeser and it comes as a follow-up to Case Study 01. The acclaimed Freudian is in fine form right now having picked up a 2023 Juno Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B/Soul Recording for 'Please Do Not Lean' which featured BADBADNOTGOOD. He also headlined the 2022 Coachella Festival and hit the Billboard Top 20 with his last EP. He reaches new heights here with his thought-provoking lyrics, catchy bars and sensuous r&b stylings.

Review: Philadelphia rapper Dark Lo is currently out on bail. He faces nine years in prison for witness intimidation but that hasn't stopped him serving up this new full length, the aptly titled Borrowed Time. It's been produced by Harry Fraud and the nine tracks come with decent guest spots from Detroit's Body James and AR-aB. The music is personal and story-telling, a mix of both calmness and aggression and an underlying authenticity. Lo has also teased four other albums he's currently working on, but to beat this one will take some going.

Review: Some 30 years after it was recorded, Das EFX's acclaimed (and long out-of-print) second album, Straight Up Sewaside, finally returns to vinyl. This is undoubtedly a good thing, because many rap connoisseurs consider it to be influential duo's most impressive full-length. It's certainly an early '90s East Coast classic; a "golden-era" gem which saw the pair slow down their previously high-octane, stream of consciousness rap style and strut their stuff over brilliant beats that bear all the hallmarks of executive producer PMD (he of the Hit Squad and EPMD fame). For those of a certain age, it's a highly evocative album, while younger hip-hop heads will marvel at the quality of the brilliant blend of boom-bap, hardcore hip-hop and sample-heavy New York brilliance.

Review: .Often considered to be one of the biggest commercial flops in music recording history, Standing In The Spotlight was the 1989 debut solo album from Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone. Released under his rap moniker Dee Dee King, the bizarre project served up an amalgam of old school hip-hop, late 50s garage rock and even doo-wop, all blended together in chaotic fashion, and led by Dee Dee's new gangster bravura. It's been noted that the hip-hop-centric attire seen on the cover was adorned by Dee Dee at his last few Ramones shows shortly before departing, which drew major ire from his bandmates. Tapping Marky Ramone to oversee percussion samples, and even enlisting Debbie Harry (Blondie) to provide backing vocals on 'Mashed Potato Time', and, 'German Kid', with the latter featuring vocals sung in both English and German (nodding to Dee Dee's growing up as an army brat), the album was crafted with every earnest intention of launching Dee Dee's solo career. Conceptually inspired whilst in rehab and used as a project of focus when embracing his newfound sobriety; the sheer enthusiasm and fearlessness of Standing In The Spotlight grants it a pass and a place as a truly absurd offshoot oddity from a vital member of the one of the defining punk bands.

Review: A-grade record collector and accomplished DJ Degiheugi has toured with DJ Shadow, dropped plenty of great albums and is a master of smart sampling. Some of his earlier albums are in the process of being reissued at the moment and Aquilon is one of them. It has been remastered for the occasion and cut to translucent blue vinyl 17 years after it first arrived in 2005. It's a worldly mix of downtempo beats and hip-hop grooves with plenty of colour and vibrancy. Some cuts are all about the body-popping beats and others are real late-night mood-setters.

Review: American hip-hop group Digable Planets dropped their revered second studio album Blowout Comb in October 1994 on Pendulum/EMI Records. It bare all the hallmarks of the classic boom-bap era with hints of flower power positivity, plenty of dusty beats, great samples (of Roy Ayers amongst others) and, rather rarely, female bars in amongst the men. There is more than a whiff of A Tribe Called Quest to these beats, which also have lyrical themes such as inner city life and black nationalism. Guest appearances from icons of the time like Guru of Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, and DJ Jazzy Joyce all feature. Top tackle.

But this crew break the mould, and we knew they would, because with a lineup featuring 9th Wonder, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin, how could they not? It was back in 2020 when they came together to serve up some essential hip hop sounds that draw on funk, jazz and soul in fine contemporary fashion. Two years later the record still hits the mark with the help of some fine guests spots from the likes of Malaya & Phoelix, Herbie Hancock, Cordae and even Snoop Dogg.

How Does It Feel
Review: Given how prolific he was earlier in his career, the relative silence of Dizzee Rascal of late has been surprising to say the least - though nobody would begrudge him a break from the music industry treadmill. By the sounds of Don't Take It Personal, officially his eighth album, the four-year break has done him good. He's in prime lyrical form through, skipping between mutations of the grime blueprint he helped draw up and the kind of dancefloor-focused fare that he's periodically served up since the success of 'Bonkers' all those years ago. It's a smart move, meaning that hook-ups with fellow grime stars JME, D Double E, P Road and BackRoad Gee sit side by side with UK garage and bassline-leaning club workouts such as 'How Did I Get So Calm', 'Sugar & Spice' and 'What You Know About That'.

Review: It seems astonishing that 17 years have passed - and much water flowed under the proverbial bridge - since Dizzee Rascal released his groundbreaking debut album, Boy In Da Corner. The man himself seems to think so too, because E3 AF, his seventh album, sees him return to his East London roots via a set that's every bit as vibrant, inventive and exciting as his breakthrough debut. His rhymes - and those of the numerous guest MCs littered throughout the set - are naturally on-point, dexterous and lyrically inventive, while the beats they ride expand Dizzee's original raw, bass-heavy grime blueprint via nods to trap, UK garage, dubstep and dancehall. As many critics have pointed out, the result is the Bow-raised mic man's best album in years.

With almost every instrument played and produced by the man himself, the album is a deeply personal homage to the musical influences that have defined his work. It also draws from his upbringing in Richmond and his journey to musical prominence with re-imagined tracks by beloved artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Ohio Players, Donald Fagen, and more. Each song is a reflection of Harrison's fondest memories and a testament to his evolution as a musician and adds up to a fantastically nostalgic trip with a new school edge.

This album finds the multi-talented artist play every single instrument on it after three heard years of graft. It swallows up a myriad of influences from across the ages such as soul, funk, rock, R&B, hip-hop, all with his own unique collage yet cohesive style. There are forward looking disco cuts, rubbery basslines, heart meltingly smooth neo-soul sounds and spaced-out hip-hop joints for the late night hours. This is a fresh record desire its nod to classic black music.

The slick licks of a young Mr Lif on "Nosferatu", the post-apocalyptic tension of "Univearth" the sludgy, swampy cosmic hip-hop of the Aesop Rock-featured "Kill Switch" and the unashamed sax sex of "Slit Of Cloud"..... Do we need to go on? Limited edition, 180g transparent vinyl; even if you already have this in your collection this is a very, very appealing investment.
