Review: Soul meets speed garage on this new V/A EP from Z Records, blurring the lines between the genres in just the way we like it. The opening track - Grant Nelson's mix of 'Starlight' by Dave & Omar - is a euphoric, piano-laced uplifter which both sonically and lyrically urges us to reach for the sky. That's followed by the DJ Fudge production 'Everything' by Chocolate Fudge Band, featuring lots of live instrumentation and a Curtis Mayfield style vocal, while over on the flip, 'Looking For You' proves to be a deep and bouncy cut filled with soulful Motown vocal chops and an organ workout worthy of any Sunday service, over a beautifully wonky house framework.

Review: Following fine recent outings on Kaoz Theory and Constant Sound, Chris Stussy (real name Niels Steenbergen) brings his trademark brand of tech-house/deep house fusion to popular Parisian imprint yoyaku for the very first time. He starts cheerily and colourfully with 'Fessor of Dabz', a sonically inviting fusion of bouncy synth sounds, vibrant melodies, bubbly bass and snappy drums, before opting for a more turn-of-the-millennium UK tech-house sound (think Circulation and you're close) on 'Questions of Today'. The Dutch producer updates this sound further on the glitchier and slightly funkier 'Neutral Tones', before combining dreamy electronics with rubbery tech-house bass and drums on 'Angel in the Sky'.

Review: Yore's latest release is a little different. It features Chicago-based producer and sound designer Andrew Emil delivering his own 'dreamix' versions of a trio of little-known cuts. There's an epic, nigh on 10-minute revision of one his own productions as Change Request, 'Sunday's Best', on the flip - a gorgeously bumpin', summery and melodious chunk of life-affirming deep house sunshine with added US garage swing in the beats - plus two tweaks of cuts by (we think) lesser-known acts. His take on Artispure's collaboration with The Remedy, 'Chicago Underground', is a more spacey-sounding chunk of tactile deep house hypnotism, while Emil's take on Elbert Phillips and Andre Esput's 'Sunlight' is a superbly soulful, garage-influenced deep house workout that more than lives up to its title.

Review: Late last year the Wolf Music crew launched a dedicated vinyl only series in triumphant fashion with the double dose of Red Rack' Em that was In Love Again. Evidently looking to maintain a high profile for this new endeavour, the second release in the series features the talented duo that is Creative Swing Alliance! If you've shaken a leg at a recent Wolf Music gig you'll no doubt be familiar with "In My Arms" from Pabs Valentine and his fellow Creative Swinger Steven Joyce Ames, a sublime arrangement where percussion rattles away with just a hiss of distortion, complemented by filtered M1 stabs, a beefy bassline and some fierce vocal hooks. Heading up the B Side is Wolf cub Thrillogy; don't be put off by the chilly title, "Arctic" is actually all about the warmth that resonates from those huge synth lines.

Review: The latest release from the reliable Wolf Music camp is a limited edition, hand-stamped affair, and features two previously unheard remixes of tracks from Casino Times' Familiar Circles full-length. On the A-side, Al Zanders does a stellar job reworking "Carlotta", in the process laying down a hypnotic, percussion rich deep house shuffler full of bright cowbell hits, sunset-friendly jazz guitar licks and bubbly electronic melodies. On the flip you'll find a more than pleasant surprise: a deep, dreamy and utterly beguiling drum & bass remix of "Oddity" from Smallville regular Moomin. Its expert combination of evocative musical elements and crispy, snare-driven D&B rhythms is reminiscent of the golden age of Bukem-style liquid D&B.

Review: Elvis Cassetta sure has a fancy name that would suit a glam-rock frontman or indie dropout much more than a deep house don. But that's what the Zurich-based artist proves himself to be here with a first release on his own new label Why Not. It is trad US house on the opener, with dusty drums and well-deployed vocal samples next to smart chords. There is more bump n grind to 'Focals Finest' and the best of the lot might be the twitchy cosmic tech of 'Jupiter Groove'. Silat Beksi remixes the same one into something balmier and psyched out.

Review: You can always count on Capracara to bring something a little spicy to the table, but the results are even more unpredictable when you throw UK house magician Simbad into the mix. If you like your house music extremely grubby, blippy, analogue and slightly unhinged, but still soulful, you're in the right place. 'Roubaix Cube' jerks and bumps along with all kinds of bleeps and rugged beats, and the pads sound delirious but still inject some real heart into the track. 'Prowler Report' heads further off into discordant freakiness, but there's still plenty of punch down low. 'The Ozone' is the smoother offering, with some gorgeous keys, chords and pads interweaving for a still-rugged but oh-so-sweet strain of deep house music.

Review: During the various lockdowns of 2020 and '21, Crazy P delved deep into their vaults to see what unfinished songs were lurking in the dustier corners of the archive. These were then used as inspiration for new, finished and polished versions. This seven-inch contains two fine examples of this repurposing process. A-side 'If Life Could Be This Way' is suitably strong - a heart-aching, bittersweet chunk of laidback melancholia that sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Balearica and hazy West Coast jazz-rock. It's sure to be a fan favourite in years to come. Review: Vicious Charm Recordings makes its vinyl bow with a collection of cuts from the mighty Crooked Man, AKA sometime Sweet Exorcist and All Seeing I man Richard 'Parrot' Barratt. A-side 'Love & Resistance' is one of Barratt's most magical and otherworldly workouts yet - a long and crooked chunk of off-kilter deep house soul featuring vocals by Carmen Squire that's as emotionally impactful as it as magical and melancholic. Over on the flip, Barratt offers up more mind-mangling mid-tempo sleaze via the echoing vocal samples, clanking industrial machine beats and frankly filthy TB-303 bass of 'Nemesis'. He ruffs that track up further on 'Nemesister', reaching for bouncy, dancehall-influenced house beats, reverb-laden stabbing bass and trippy electronic riffs. Like much of Barratt's work, it's effortlessly excellent.

Review: Here comes an all new and unknown edits labels with some playful disco house jams packed with characterful samples from Chaka Kenn. 'Dawn Breaker' opens up with freewheeling melodies and loose drum breaks that makes for a nice sunny vibe run through with jazzy Rhodes action. 'High Steaks' takes on a heavier house vibe with layers of lo-fi synth and some muffled vocals for company. Last of all is some playful swing that fuses house and hip hop over Hall & Oates bump and grind groove and filtered vocals. Useful tools for sure.

Review: John Wilcox has been slowly disseminating crusty hardware jams for some six years now, in which time he's appeared as Cyclonix on Horn Wax, and now he nips over to Tusk Wax for more robo-charged antics in the curious corner of grubby, electro tinged house music the label orbits. "Telemachus" is a dreamy opening number that keeps the spook level up to maximum and the reverb voluminous throughout. "Synth Run" has a bit more bite, but not at the expense of atmosphere. Whatever/Whatever get hold of "Telemachus" and strip it down to a sparse skeleton of a track, and then Wilcox rounds the record off with the steppy ambient excursion "Ronin Love (dub)".

The boundlessly potentiated space between disco, dance and jazz is their game, and 'Tropical Disco Volume 23' proves they can win it time and time again. Four tracks of trumpetting 4x4 glory-buzz dominate this EP. Clean Is Good wipes the floor with disco-edit edge, while Moodena comes through with a mighty mood of motor city madness, and Sartorial and Infrasoul share the B-side with a pair of broken, drum-banging and glass-shattering instrumentals. Review: Three distinctly outer space-themed cuts from Greece's Alex Celler, each with a linear minimal/tech skeleton that has other, interloping musical influences draped elegantly and classily across it. 'Ancient Astronuats' has the weird, wired mystical stirrings of early Black Dog about it, complete with melting, bendy electro notations that coax it along and add a psychedelic dimension. 'Stargate To Cosmos' has a playful, Drexciyan feel to it, with crunchy, organic drum beats flirting alongside the more rigid electrics. 'Object In The Sky' is the most minimal of the pack, sleek and stalker-like, but still contains enough action - mainly floating around up there in the ether - to hold and build attention.

Review: Toy Tonic always deliver interesting, functional, emotional house music and here comes another such serving from the so-far so-excellent Cody Currie. The opener is as deep and jazzy as they come, with rich chords and twinkling pads all floating way above a nice warm bassline. 'LS Anthem' plays with broken beats and warped chords that are woozy and rich as a spoken word sample brings a sense of cool. 'When The Time Is Right' then keeps up the magical Rhodes work and a soulful, shuffling groove before 'M9' picks up the pace a little without loosing any of the heart and version of 'Moves' closes in steamy fashion.

Review: Mark Night's label is one of the UK's biggest when it comes to main room house sounds. This sampler shows exactly what it is all about as we head into the madness of the Miami Music Week and then Ibiza soon after. Twolate opens up with 'Baila' which has tribal drums and percusison that stomp with real heaviness under wild vocals. CASSIMM & Gene Farris combine then for the maximal monster that is 'Party People' with all its sweeping synth filters and James Haskell's' 'Check It Out' is a funky groove that ducks and dives under stuff chords. Last of all is Danny Rhys with the hooky andoopy joys of 'Sibali.'

Review: Toolroom sits at the top of the tree when it comes to big room house music. Mark Knight's label has mastered the art of maximal sounds and this eighth volume of the Tooroom Sampler series is another one that will do plenty of damage. Essel's 'Sweat' is a rigid tech cut with stiff synths and libidinous vocals, then Shiba San and Ayarez get direct with shuffling tech house cut 'Twist It' complete with big skewed synths. Friend Within's 'Pilka' keeps the energy levels high with fizzing synth loops over textured drums and a fat bassline. Review: As Toolroom only puts out a small percentage of their releases on vinyl, those given the wax treatment tend to be anthems in waiting. Martin Ikin's 'You', featuring some seriously loved-up, glassy-eyed lead vocals from Chenai, certainly sounds like a future classic. Shamelessly positive and life-affirming, 'You' is a turn-of-the-90s style piano house workout with added 21st century weight, a few disco-house style filters and a raw, stabbing bassline. The cheery vocal version (side A) comes back by a quite different Dub mix. This opts for a darker, chunkier big room sound - all wobbly riffs, pulsing electronic noises, cut up vocal snippets and mind-mangling motifs - that should delight all those who love Toolroom's trademark sound.

It's a classy deep house outing from the off with Meftah's 'Recognizing Strength In Healing' exploring subtle sound worlds with muted chords and gentle finger clicks. Review: America's Thema label loudly return with the third chapter of the Strength In Numbers series, an outlet reserved strictly for the finest and sleekest in dancefloor delights. There's plenty of talent and quality within, presented by a handsomely hand-picked selection of house scientists, namely Raudive, Cesare vs Disorder and Suburb, but it's the UK's Mr.G who takes the limelight on this one. Review: The Ten Lovers Music crew has got another seamless fusion of lunge, jazz, downtempo and deep house on its hands here courtesy of this fresh new 12" from Cumulative Collective and Re:Fill. It's Cumulative Collective who go first with 'Suede Bear', a playful late-night cut with dancing chords and jazzy keys over soul-drenched deep house beats with a funky bass riff running right through the middle. On the flip, Re:Fill's 'Live Vibe' is a more broken beat workout with spinning hi-hats and tumbling snares all held together by a bright lead synth that brings the funk.

Review: The artwork for this new 12" from the System 108 label is eccentric enough to make you want to check out the music even if you don't know the artists. It's the sort of cover that suggests the music will be left of centre and quirky and that it is. 'Sao Januario' is a deep and lazy groove with sunny chords and jazzy keys that take you to the global south. 'Sunny Villa On A Distant Planet' is a twisted disco cut with house leaning drums and big cowbells under intergalactic synth lines. This latest offering takes the form of a various artists EP and opens with the brilliantly spaced out electronic house of'Lorenzo Chiabotti & Just_Me's 'Darko FM'. It's a silky one with balmy pads that encourage you to dive right in. Martin M's 'Pleasure Minds' then strips things backed to a nice and empty but rolling groove and on the flip Chad Andrew & Imbue get crunchy with their broken beats. Review: Class Compliance's brand of deep house is one embellished with plenty of details and synthetic sounds that sit nicely with the more cuddly depths of the drums. On this new 'Plug & Play' EP for Space Repetitions that is the case once more. The opening title cut is one that rides on smooth drums but has metal textures and sine synths detailing the grooves. 'Dreams' is more zoned out - the pads are soft focus and the drums are super soft around the edges, then 'Mosquito' has a more distorted and lo-fi edge with crunchy percussion and busted kicks.

Review: This is the reissue of 2021's of the house music record Basement Grooves Volume 1 by Call Eden. After the first run of copies, the demand continued to slowly build as many couldn't resist wanting a copy of this excellent EP. All four pieces offer something special for that late night house music lover. Fans of labels like Nu Groove, Strictly Rhythm and the like will surely gravitate to gems like the beautiful 'La Riviera' and the Wild Pitch sound of 'Frome'. The B-sides are not just fillers either. We really like the groove on 'Gum' especially. This version comes on red vinyl to differentiate itself from the first edition.

Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label.

Review: Leron Carson may not be the best-known Midwest producer, but he has history. Carson's first release came way back in 2001, with Theo Parrish putting out a track he'd recorded way back in 1987 and has appeared on Sound Signature intermittently over the years. This new 12" from Carson for Theo's label is HEAVY! "Lemonline" is a deliciously breezy concoction, with Carson's jazzy piano riffs working in perfect unison with bouncy, Latin-influenced drum rhythms. Flipside "Sofnthik", on the other hand, sounds like a previously unheard 1980s Chicago deep house concoction, with warm, loved-up chords swirling around a clattering drum machine groove. Whether it was recorded 30 years ago is unknown, but it certainly boasts a similar lo-fi, analogue feel.
