Progessive Roots (Spritiual take)
Heloise
Review: First released in digital and CD formats via Sacred Rhythm, 'Progessive Roots Evolution: A Song For Healing' hears Joaqin 'Joe' Claussell's indelible style of long-form spiritual house music re-flaunted to especial somatic ends. Intentionally crafted as a piece that bridges the needs of both the music and dance communities to whom Claussell is mutually close, this is a suite divided into multiple sections that feed on one another; they appose elements of samba, jazz and house, with ambient interstices and even ruminative piano meltdowns ('Healer', 'Heloise'). This ultra limited yellow LP edition is the audiophile's preference, its dynamism best flaunted on the floaty but driving 'Cosmic Arts' mix.

Per Hammar - "Sub Motion"
Honeydrop - "Instagram Sunset"
Cesare & Disorder - "Choramingando"
Zlene & Kalkyl - "Pull It Up"
Review: Seaweed Rythm Vol 1 assembles an accomplished crew of techno explorers for a fine gatefold double 12". Revered underground old timer Mihai Popoviciu opens with the gentle dub delights of 'Lit' then Rowlanz gets intensely romantic on the dub house of 'Hold Me Down' and YSC cooks up a superbly bubbly bassline and slinky groove with a tough edge. There is then some lovely crisp electro depth from Andu Simion on 'When They See Us' and further highlights from Per Hammar on 'Sub Motion' and the icy minimal breaks of Cesare & Disorder's 'Choramingando.'

Review: Kerri Chander's sound is so unique it almost deserves its only genre. He brings more musicality to house than almost anyone and for that reason is often called the Stevie Wonder of the genre. His latest album is a real labour of love that saw him write each of the tunes on the very dance floor of the clubs that are mentioned in each title. In some cases, he used found sounds, calculated the delay of kicks off a wall to phase them through a mix and even record himself playing on a green room piano at Printworks to use in the final tune. It might be the best album of his career and a selection of the tunes from it make it onto this third essential sampler.

Change Your Mind (feat Troy Denari - instrumental) (9:24)
Review: On this second, more expansive sampler for his forthcoming album Spaces & Places, Kerri Chandler treats us to tracks inspired by - and by the wonders of mobile recording technology, produced inside - clubs including Dublin's District 8, Glasgow institution Sub Club, Lux of Lisbon and NYC's Output. Of course, the standard is uniformly high throughout - it's classic Chandler from start to finish - but our picks of a very fine bunch include the soulful piano house shimmer of 'Change Your Mind', the thrusting, bass-heavy pump of 'Subbie (Rattle The Subbie Mix)', the effortlessly slick and soulful 'Tenacity (Full Vocal Mix)' and the ludicrously sub-heavy snap of 'See The Light (Dub)'. To borrow an old cliche, this is very much, 'all killer, no filler'.

Review: Bonzai Classics is back with another uncompromising selection of old school and hard hitting house classics across two slabs of back and white vinyl. The originals are the work of Cherrymoon Tax with 'The House Of House' being a big, fizzing, distortion filled slammer which gets remixes by the likes of Oliver Lieb into something more techno, Jam El Mar into a more percussive groove and Mike Push into something trance tinged. There are two further remixes as well as raved up originals 'Conflictation' and 'Let There Be House' both of which bring some old school energy to the floor.

Review: Guangzhou, China-based artist and DJ Cola Ran tune sin to her inner reflections and global travel experiences when making music. On her debut EP she taps int the human experience to tell the tale of society's development over the years and blends traditional Asian and African instruments with modern electronics, field recordings and vocals to do so. It's a fulsome ambient, Balearic and downtempo brew with a gorgeous sense of melody and spirituality that offers a soothing escape. 'Riot On The Hush' is a lush tapestry of hand drums and xylophone-like sounds that rise and fall like a sea current, 'Outta Space' is the same vibe but with a futuristic cosmic twist. These are two of many highlights.

Review: Compton's own Channel Tres has been making waves since he first popped up in 2018, signing to majors and dropping some heavyweight collabs with the likes of SG Lewis, Robyn and Emotional Oranges. It's a good opportunity to track back then to his first records, being reissued by his regular stomping ground of Godmode. What has made Channel Tres so instantly appealing is his smart embrace of deep house on tracks like 'Controller', which place him in a similar sphere to the likes of Galcher Lustwerk. Nick Sylvester's production is utterly addictive, creating a cool and deadly cocktail which has lost none of its potency in the five years since release.

Review: After he made such an impact with his debut EP in 2018, Compton-based hip-house hero Channel Tres made good on his burgeoning reputation with his second release the year after. Black Moses might nod to Isaac Hayes, but there's nothing throwback about the sound as Tres rides all kinds of sparkling fresh electronic beats with a focus on deep house. He was also able to confirm his burgeoning reputation in the scene with a notable guest spot from JPEGMAFIA on the low slung title track. There's just so much swag to this record, it's going to make you and everyone in a square mile get loose, wherever you drop it.

Review: BMG reissue the second ever release by the pioneering Swiss extreme metal band Celtic Frost, originally released in 1985 as an EP. Emperor's Return often goes criminally undersung as a fleshing-out of black metal as a genre, with the bleak imagery surrounding it going on to cement the style as its own niche. Their first record to feature American drummer Reid Cruickshank (aka Reed St. Mark), the EP comprises five thrash-come-black metal rabble-rousers, ahead of their time for 1985.

Review: The fourth and (we think) final sampler for Kerri Chandler's epic new album, Spaces & Places, not only features a swathe of cuts from the set, but also a clutch of must-check alternate takes. Of the album tracks, we're particularly fond of the Ministry of Sound inspired piano house workout 'Hurry Up (featuring Dreamer G)' and the locked-in early morning hypnotism of 'Sunrise', which the New Jersey native recorded at Berlin club 'Watergate'. Other highlights across the double-pack include the breezy 'Joyful Life' (and its accompanying 'Vibeapella') and the bonus 'No Guitar Mix' of the mid-90s St German style wonder of 'Dirty', a cut recorded at, and in tribute to, legendary Paris venue Rex Club.

Now, the Soundbath label has got together a first ever vinyl pressing and reissue of them which is sure to help them become classics all over again. That will certify be true of the one, Tsidi's 'Contagious' (Transcendal dub remix), which has everything required to become an anthem - the smooth female vocal, soft focus synths and subtle old school bass. Add in four other equally lush and romantic house sound and you have a real doozy.

Review: Susan Cadogan is an esteemed reggae vocalist who has been since the 1970s. Now she continues her musical journey with this cover single which is taken from her excellent 2020 album Hurt So Good - Storybook Revisited, distributed by Burning Sounds. Side-A features a rendition of the reggae classic by Dawn Penn, while Side-B offers a sweet soul interpretation of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' track. Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:51)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:25)
Review: Discodelic obviously rates this latest 7" of theirs because they have released it in more than one format. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Two belters and this one looks as good as it sounds, too.

There is the lovely holiday song 'Spidey-Bells (A Hero's Lament)' by Chris Pine, who is also behind the festive 'Up On The House Top'. Other cast members such as Shameik Moore appear on 'Joy To The World', with Jake Johnson doing a fine turn on 'Deck The Halls' and Jorma Taccone on 'The Night Before Christmas 1967'. Review: Lo-fi house lovers Chaos In The CBD make their Fabric debut with a new mix CD and LP, contributing their wares to the latter's fresh mix Presents series, which came about after the end of the FABRICLIVE series and has seen to the likes of Sherelle, Octo Octa and Marbou State also feature. This 22-track extravaganza is noted to have been Fabric's most challenging licensing ordeal to date, having to polish a variety of sonic gemstones including by The Logic Box, Box Clever and Psychedelic Research Lab. Clearly, the relative obscurity of the names on the CD make this the duo's ode to 'hidden' house. Their original track 'Higher Elavation', meanwhile, cements this mysterious mood with surreptitious basses and smoggy pads.

Blindfold (4:31)
No Escape From Heaven (4:22)
Review: MOV's all-in-one Curve reissues campaign continues strongly with this new iteration of 'Blindfold', the industrial shoegaze band's debut EP. Establishing the sound they would inevitably grow into, and more or less own, for at least a decade to come, tracks such as 'Blindfold' are as emotional as they are driving, pitting Liz Fraser-esque vocals (courtesy of titan Toni Halliday) against industrial hip-hop/rock beats. The hip-hop influence is further bolstered by a rare rap feature on a shoegaze tune: that of JC-001, the one-time 'fastest rapper in the world'. The formula of a Curve track should be clear enough on finishing this EP; stark, mysterious, sexy and strange, and always with a sense of self-assured, yet pensive, forward propulsion.

Review: Curve's music represents the electronicization of shoegaze, coming at a turning point in the 1990s in which post-industrial sounds and hoover guitars came naturally together. While the duo's sound seems contemporary, 'Frozen', their second EP, came relatively early on in their career. Imagine MBV but with well-mixed instruments and perhaps even a suitability for the club environment - these ingredients form the basis of the vindictive 'Zoo' or the rapturous 'Coast Is Clear'. This reissue comes as a clear white marble edition; confident road-trip struts, fluorescent guitar washes, and gorgeously lethargic vocals complete Curve's neo-shoegaze picture.

Review: Although they're widely considered to be a shoegaze band, Chapterhouse were quite wide-ranging in their sound, and that's best demonstrated on their run of EPs. Music On Vinyl continue their mission to reissue all these landmark records from the early 90s, and so we come to the third record, Mesmerise. Ahead of their debut album, this four-track selection speaks to the unique space the band occupied between the baggy sound from Manchester and the ethereal grandeur of shoegaze. It's a sound which has a strong nostalgic tint from a modern perspective, truly a product of the time with a rose-tinted power to sweep you away. Just put on 'Precious One' and try to resist the sentimental swell.

Deli (Dark Jester mix) (9:07)
Review: It has been around 13 years since most people will have had a chance to hear much about Chapterhouse. Finishing their reunion tour in 2010, you can't help but feel there was still a fair bit left unsaid even after that. The outfit may not be top on everyone's list of late-1980s and earl-mid-1990s remembrances, but were more than deserving of that final two-year stint on the road, and this reissue package.

Formed in 1987, and immediately lumped in with a then-nascent shoegaze scene, the Reading-born team aren't actually that easy to describe. Dreamy, at times verging on opiate, yes, but arguably bigger, rockier and looser than that might suggest. Here you get two of their final singles, 'Don't Look Now' and 'She's A Vision', alongside two top reworks of 'Deli' - one experimental psych offering, the other bound for Balearic sets.

Review: .Coldplay - where on Earth do you start? On the one hand, snubbed by 'real musos' for their broad crossover appeal and uncanny ability to make every song feel like it was written for the next Richard Curtis movie. Nevertheless, when a band achieves such levels of success, you have to accept there's definitely something in their water. In this case, a deft knack for penning arrangements that invoke feelings as big as the stadiums the tracks themselves were built to fill.
Prospekt's March is a great example, but also spotlights the fact that Coldplay isn't just shorthand for rousing chart-friendly soft rock anthems. Originally released in 2008, and taking plenty of almost-made-it tracks from the studio sessions that led to preceding album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, this eight-song offering spans everything from hands in the air sing-a-long hits ('Life In Technicolour', 'Lovers In Japan') to achingly beautiful piano solos ('Postcards From Far Away'), sombre brass balladry ('Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground') and - wait for it - high-production hip hop ('Lost+').

The Californian group would subtly mix in latin influences into their, often strange, beats influenced from A Tribe Called Quest (like on the zany chanting on 'I Ain't Goin' Out Like That'), Beastie Boys and Public Enemy and going on to become huge influences on the impending nu-metal wave (thing the greats like Korn and System of A Down). You, of course, can't talk about 'Black Sunday' without 'Insane in the Brain', which Statik Selektah produced a brand new remix just for this Record Store Day remix 12 inch, as well as a new 'Hits From the Bong' flip from the one and only, the original producer DJ Muggs.

Review: Music producers do tend to be rare breeds, so it's not a surprise to hear of a label series exploring the theme. 'Uncommon Species II' is the second installment of the series from the Swiss label Phantom Island, bringing together various artists for five curios centring on oddball future disco, nu-disco, and re-edits. Highlights include the dream-pop-Balearic Kejeblos Remix of Moreeats' 'Forever Fun' - in which a rogue male vocal seductively implores us to light his fire - and CCO's 'Cyanea' - a standout acid disco number. Frankly, though, all the tracks here are unusual bangers, packed with extra additions that only a rare breed of artist could add.

Review: It might be getting cold and dark and wet here in the UK but music will always be able to transport us to warmer, sunnier, happier climes. And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Chez Madame La Baronne (Idjut Boys Fazz Junk version)
Review: Earlier this year, French disco and jazz-funk combo Chatobaron joined forces with fellow Parisian Dimitri From Paris for the rather good 'I Like (The Music That You Play)'. While that was a wholehearted disco workout, this speedy sequel sees the band (and their high-profile collaborator) explore their West Coast jazz-funk influences via an inspired workout full to bursting with killer instrumental solos, dusty grooves, memorable motifs and a genuinely killer, cowbell-sporting percussion brerak. This time round, there are no Dimitri From Paris remixes; instead, dubbed-out disco favourites the Idjut Boys are on hand to smother the track in tape echo and dub delay. The result is a typically spaced-out, low-slung affair that naturally makes the most of the band's killer bassline and layered percussion sounds.

Coco Bryce - "You Care Because They Do" (5:40)
Tommy The Cat - "Power Station" (5:28)
Review: Jungle revivalists Coco Bryce and Tommy The Cat are old pals who've released numerous joint EPs over the years. Here they inaugurate a new series of split twelves - snappily titled 'CocoCat' - on Tommy The Cat's own Cat in the Bag label. Bryce handles side A, delivering the nostalgic jungle-techno thrills of 'You Care Before They Do'. It's a pleasingly energetic affair in which bleep techno style melodic motifs - think LFO, Sweet Exorcist etc - and shimmering futurist chords rise above a sweat-soaked jungle break and weighty bass. Over on the flip, Tommy The Cat doffs a cap to the early days of deep, jazzy d&b, successfully cloaking a punchy, Amen-driven beat and heady bassline in the dreamiest of chords.

Review: Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth are a big part of the history in hip-hop during the early 90s. Hailing from Mount Vernon, New York they released two classic albums and a handful of singles to great success. A regular selection on the very influential MTV Yo-Raps show they quickly gained notoriety for Pete Rock's use of obscure soul and jazz records. Here we have the reissue of the 2017 release that brings their most popular track to the masses once again. 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' blew them up big and was their highest charting record. This 7" features the Altered Tapes remix along with the instrumental on the second side. You would be hard pressed to find another track that is the epitome of the New York hip-hop sound in 1992 then this mega-hit.

Review: Parisian jazz-funk, disco and boogie band Chatobaron - an outfit helmed by multi-instrumentalist Frank Chatona - have previously worked in the studio with house and nu-disco mainstay Art of Tones, so it's no surprise to see them recruiting the mighty Dimitri From Paris to mix their latest single. His A-side 'Club Vocal' mix is a genuinely riotous and celebratory affair, with strong group vocals (singing about how much they love 'your' music) and heady horns rising a jolly and joyous, piano-sporting disco-funk groove rich in low-slung bass and Cerrone style percussion. It comes accompanied not by one of Dimitri's deconstructed dubs, but rather an equally excitable 'Club Instrumental' mix that boasts all the goodness of his A-side mix minus the vocals.

'Munir's Bandung First Trip' is serene electronica with lush and dreamy lines and naive vocals floating up above the smooth and uplifting rhythms. 'Meng Que's Yard' brings jumbled percussion and sugar synths to a broken beat jumble and 'Mogwaa's Studio In 07307' is a retro-future cut that pairs bouncy nu-disco with dubby pads. Marc Romboy & Sinisa Tamamovic goes first and make it into a steamy, weighty but deep and pulsing track that drips with sweat and lust. Review: When Cabaret Voltaire returned to the release schedule in 2020 as the one-man Richard H Kirk show, fans were relieved to find that mind-bending meld of 1970s Kosmische, techno, dub, house and space-age experimental electro was as pure as it ever has been - the results being a typically fresh and forward-thinking record the man in question summed up as "no nostalgia... normal rules do not apply. Something for the 21st Century. No old material."

Less than six months later and the big CV has more next level business to offer us, coming in the form of Shadow of Funk, a new EP that offers something of a counterpoint or extension to last year's full-length, Shadow of Fear. Based on 'Billion Dollar' alone - an acid-driven big, dark room banger that closes this EP -this release looks set to make an equally heavy impact, but as with anything this man touches, the joy is in discovery. So, let's leave it at that.

Review: US boogie and 'modern soul' outfit the Creations released just two singles back in the 1980s, both of which have become firm favourites amongst dusty-fingered disco collectors. These two tracks, which until now have officially remained unissued, were recorded in 1982 and pre-date their 1983 debut single 'Keep Dancing'. 'Do It Right' is a fine slab of boogie breeziness in which chiming lead lines, soulful vocals (male lead, female backup) and colourful synth sounds rise above a warming and pleasingly organic groove. The group dials up the spacey synth sounds on flip-side 'I Like What I See', where rubbery boogie bass guitar, clipped rhythm guitar licks and more super-smooth lead vocals catch the ear. Genuine buried treasure, basically, of the kind that will have private-press disco diggers salivating.

Review: A five-track EP of rarities by Alex Chilton, the American singer and songwriter best known as the lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star, but whose later efforts led to an extended ambassadorship of the US avant-garde underground. The bulk of the tracks on ‘My Rival’ originate from Chilton’s earliest days, circa. 1975; at this critical juncture, Big Star was no more, and Chilton was teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Saved by his former bandmate, but still confidant, Chris Bell, they soon found themselves re-roused by the power of music, holing up together in Chilton’s bedroom and recording this short but wild set of bluesy experiments. Easily mistaken as the early murmurations of a Big Star reunion, this project should be taken as an eccentricity unto its own, and wholly deserves its 12” debut after an initial RSD run.

It is a six track various artists EP that comes on silver marbled vinyl and opens with the sleazy underworld sounds of 'Selva Oscura' from Conceptual. Review: Pioneering psychedelic trance label Platipus is going all-out to celebrate its 30th birthday, with no less than 12 compilation style EPs scheduled for release this year. This is the second and, like its predecessor, sounds pleasingly current thanks to the trend towards harder and more psychedelic music. Len Faki kicks things off via a pleasingly weighty, hypnotic, chant-sporting rework of Union Jack's 'Cactus', before Chab channels the spirit and sound of dawn at a turn-of-the-millennium free party ('Sunrise'). Over on the reverse, Simon Berry and Luke Brancaccio deliver a deep, progressive house-influenced tech-trance interpretation of Martin Merkel's 'Little Wonder', while Star impresses with the driving, peak-time hedonism of 'Rock Rose'.

(Jazz) is something that teaches you not only how to play your instrument but it teaches you how to be a person." Considering his craft a lifelong practice, 'Steppin' In' exemplifies this outlook. The song, originally licensed from the obscure Ohio guitarist's mega-limited LP 'Cookin' With Leon Cook', shows off his deft production, guitarwork and vocal style, and reflects on a once-lost relationship. The B-side, meanwhile, hears the relationship rekindled. Clearly, just as Cook implied, time heals all wounds, just as it teaches.
