I'm Comin' Home To You
Whole Woman
Review: Australian soul singer Stella Angelico has been at it since 2012, and now, signaling yet more to come, we hear a fresh 7" documenting her work with Cookin' On 3 Burners, a Melbourne-based band whose specialism is Hammond organ funk and soul. On the A we've got 'I'm Comin' Home To You', a nimble pop-soul of impeccable quality, expressing the joy of a long-awaited return. The B-sider, 'Whole Woman', is more of a monologue and slow jam, expressing the joy of staying fully embodied and grounded.

Storia Fantasy (vocal version) (5:38)
Storia Fantasy (instrumental version) (5:37)
Review: 'Storia Fantasy' is a second release from Reparto Vinile that again marries Italo influences to a range of different genres. The label is based in Monferrato in Italy (which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and it is helmed by influential Italian Luca Bernascone. Here he assumes his new production alias Cabopolonio for a super new single. The vocal version is a nice mood tempo roller with lush pines and cosmic twinkles, vibraphone melodies and a nice retro edge to it. The instrumental version is a little more deep and slow. The dub element means it seduces even more and marks a second fine drop from this label.

I'm A Lonely Man (2:48)
Review: Northern Soul heads rejoice - Cam Cameron's delightful 1968 gem 'They Say' is back on 45 rpm thanks to Soul Junction. Cameron is a Black American artist who has a stunning voice, as you can hear here, but is one of many such talents to apparently have only ever recorded one tune before disappearing never to be heard from again. More's the pity. His real name was Alvin Cameron and he wrote this one while the lush strings come from the late John Andrew Cameron, a hugely respected arranger, producer and songwriter who had a big impact in the soul scene in the 60s and 70s in Chicago.

Review: Bronx titans Camp Lo came out strong when they arrived in the late 90s on Profile Records. Of the many sure shots on their debut LP Uptown Saturday Night, 'Black Nostaljack' was a cool, funked up party jam to get every nodding their approval. It's a classic kind of hip-hop, like an East Coast version of People Under The Stairs, and it sounds super fresh on this 7" from Get On Down. As well as the original version on the A side, the flip features the jacked up 'Mix Tape Remix' from Kid Capri, which turns the heat up good and proper if you need to get the crowd freaking.

Californie (3:51)
Stevie (3:46)
Review: .No, this is not a surprise jazz-funk outing from Dan 'Caribou' Snaith, but rather a reissue of the sole single that French outfit Cortex released as Caribou, way back in 1977. Copies of that record are now very hard to come by, so it's great that Trad Vibe have delivered this fresh edition. It's worth picking up for 'Californie' alone. The track is a near perfect fusion of the Gallic ensemble's usual loose jazz-funk sound and energetic, sun-drenched disco - all breathless electric piano solos, memorable guitar licks, dancefloor-friendly grooves and spiralling group vocals. Original flipside 'Stevie', a more relaxed and loved-up affair closer in tone to Cortex's usual material, once again resides on the reverse.

Minas Do Rei Salomao (2:40)
Review: Hot on the heels of this one first being reissued back in May, it now gets a second run courtesy of Disques Messager out of France. Cristina Camargo's 'Moral Tem Hora' was one of the standouts from the super Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds (1978 - 1982: selected by Junior Santos) compilation. It's a perfect fusion of Latin flair, Brazilian disco and jazz funk magic that has fat bass riffs and lots of bright chords and busy percussion next to a classic vocal. On the flip things get slower, sentimental and all loved up on 'Minas Do Rei Salomao' which his a perfectly steamy jam for those hot afternoons under the sun.

Together Again (3:54)
Review: Carmy Love is mainstay of the Big AC Records label by now with the likes of 'Rebel', 'Together Again' and 'Thinkin Bout You' all establishing her sound. Here she embodies a love of, or certainly respect for, Southern Soul here with a bog and bold stomper that has brassy horns and loose tambourines backing a lung busting vocal that is powerful and emotive. It's a track that has an authentic old school sound but with modern production heft. Flip it over and you'll find the equally magical 'Together Again' which is a slower sound that sinks in deeper and with more pain.

Thinkin' About You (3:39)
Review: Carmy Love brings a stylish hint of gospel to the beautiful vocal on this new single on Big A C. 'Rebel' was actually written many years ago yet the lyrics have huge repugnance today. The song has regularly been performed in that time with New Street Adventure but now the live version becomes all the more glorious as a full studio production. On the back is a tune inspired by the fertile soul crossover sounds of the late 60s and early 70s, with funky bass and body brass. These are tunes to warm your heart and uplift you as you leave the bad times behind.

Review: The good folks at Rock A Shaka have long been encouraging us to slow down and sink into a softer way of life, at least that's what we assume from their continually excellent output. This latest downtempo delight is a split 7" featuring Cassandra and Tyrone David. The former's 'Happiness Togetherness' opens up with heart-aching and soul-melting vocals unfolding in graceful fashion over the the lover's rock rhythms below. Tyrone David then offers 'Tell Me Why' which has more great vocals with a more indie twist. The drums remain cuddly and persuasive.

Review: Estonian rock band Centre El Muusa hail from Tallinn and in vitally started out as experimental electronic duo Centre Electronique Muusa before evolving into the current set up in 2018. They have dropped a couple of tasty albums since 2020 and now contain with their explorations and fusions of the worlds of jazz, rock, folk, world and country with hints of kraut on the new 7" for Funk Night. 'Moonlight Horses' is a psyched out world of campfire guitars and star gazing riffs that leaves you feeling fully hippie-d up. All Alone By The Telephone (3:16)
Body Language (2:52)
Review: First released in 1976 on Polydor, 'All Alone By The Telephone' is a lesser-sung sleeper hit by the Checkmates Ltd., but it hardly deserves this obscurity compared to their far more well-known hit 'Black Pearl', produced by Phil Spector. This one, to contrast, was produced by H.B.Barnum. It's a known go-to for DJs on the 2-step and modern soul scenes, but it's not the hype that counts; rather, the track's production is delectable, meting out near perfect harmony and balance to evoke the excruciating feeling of loneliness. 'Body Language', on the B, hears the band rested and recuperated from this isolated spell, and comes far funkier, more delightful.

Review: Si Cheeba expands his emerging Cheeba's Latin Bros edits project with a reissue of the last release on the Echo Chamber label. Following the success of 'What You Gotta Say - Hey Hey!' last year, he presents two instructional tracks to prepare you for any upcoming electric boogaloo. Continuing his mission to bridge the gap between funky and soulful sounds, Cheeba offers two fresh, sample-heavy instrumental edits. The first is a lively dance tutorial with handclaps and bold breaks, while the B-side features a more alluring mix with a djembe solo, inviting listeners to try it out. These tracks are essential for any funk enthusiast's collection.

Echo Chamber Recordings though have got them on this limited 7" and the music is a steamy mix of Afro and Latin funk that comes in two different versions. 'Dig This!' Review: Cheeba's Prestige All Stars carries on strong with its cut-and-paste beats/soul edits series. 'I Got You' tops up the trailblazing, quickfire repertoire with a dust-caked window into the past, by way of well-crafted, surround-mixed breakbeats and a gritty gospel sample on the A. Complementary to this comes the instrumental, highlighting the fact that the fact that the vocal sample is indeed the cherry on top; it hardly 'needs' said vocal to convince the listener to dance, though it does round things out with utter finesse.

Review: Two masters of the free / improvisational jazz form, Don Cherry and Jon Appleton, are rare to come by these days. Both artists are highly sought after and difficult to find on the second-hand market, so a reissue of their work - especially together - is the perfect kind of treat for our Thursday morning tasting sessions. This reissue of "Don" comes in 7" format, and its wonky, spaced-out horns and subtle electronics are every bit as strange and daring as they were back in 1970. "Jon", on the flipside, is just as twisted, and possibly even further out there into the ether. Bloody hell...1970! Highly recommended.

The Cnthonics are good at laying down timeless funk sounds, though, with great instrumentals though defining their sound. Up first is the playful sax-led sound of 'Persephone On Rollerskates' which snake-charms its way into your affections. Both of these tunes are imagined classics reimagined that have a fresh West Coast jazz-funk feel and arrive on 45rpm together for the first time. The A-side has a rocky feel and is a version of The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau', while over on the other side Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' gets a new psychedelic twist. Stop Waiting (6:01)
Review: Everyone's favourite dream pop slow-jammers Cigarettes After Sex return with two new singles on a single 12" record. On the heads, we've got 'Bubblegum', a kinky but mournful head-plodder, which concerns the object of their affections taking on a Russian-roulette-ish approach to sex and relationships. The tail-side's 'Stop Waiting', meanwhile, is ever-more hypnotic, and clearly intends to be the hidden gem of the two. You'll hear a slightly brighter and more optimistic song than the A-side, but it's still deeply morunful, with Greg Gonzalez singing of the faded memories of cut ties, sunscreen and summer dresses.

Review: Techno arriving on 7" is not an all too common sight, but why not? This release from the fledgling Dispari out of Germany suggests it works well. Cloud Management and Gavsborg take one side each, starting with the former. Their 'Tempentary Dance' pairs thudding and broken kick drum patterns with dreamy and rising synth sequences and spoken words. It's brilliantly beguiling. Review: Last year long time Flower Records associates Masanori Ikeda and Takumi Kanedo (best known for his work as part of Cro-Magnon) released their debut album as Coastlines, a stunningly sunny, laidback affair that touched on everything from nu-jazz and nu-disco to dub, Latin rhythms and Balearic beats. Here they offer up a fresh double-header on a must-check 7" single. A-side "East Coast" is particularly alluring, with the duo joining the dots between Nils Frahm piano pieces, gentle nu-jazz grooves and wide-eyed Balearic ambience. Review: Common is a giant of the hip-hop world and his eternally loved 1994 long player Resurrection is one of the best things he ever did. 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is an iconic tune taken from it, and one that is said by many to be one of hip-hop's great ever tunes. It is so admired because of its great lyrical twist and is now on 7" for the first time ever. This vital rap record is timeless and a perfect personification of hip hop which finds Common lamenting what the genre became and how commercial it was after a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s. Review: For their latest release, Six Nine Records has taken a deep dive into the back catalogue of Aussie nu-disco duo Confection, an outfit who released a wealth of (largely overlooked) cuts throughout the last decade. 'Delectable U' first featured on the pair's CD-only 2012 album Private Conversations and features core members Joshua Bageley and Juanita Tippins in full-on revivalist 80s soul mood - all rubbery bass guitar, glossy FM synth sounds, eyes-closed lead vocals and slow-motion S.O.S Band beats. This time round, it comes backed with a fresh remix courtesy of T-Groove that subtly speeds up the beats, thickens the bassline, showcases the band's Chic-style guitar licks and drags the track further towards nu-disco dancefloors. Simply superb!

Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

Review: Dynamite Cuts' current reissuing efforts once more focus on the legacy of the classic library label De Wolfe Music, this time selecting three choice songs from Frank McDonald and Chris Rea, two esteemed musicians who together debuted these cuts while forming a part of the in-house De Wolfe label ensemble, Patchwork. All three numbers are nighttime alleyway slinkers, recalling, in their finger-snapping funk palette, a slick combo of flared trousers, leather jackets, sunshaded visages and strange bumps in the night.

Thrill Me (3:30)
Thrill Me (dub version) (3:17)
Review: This week we have a new release on California's Funk Freaks, the label that brought us the likes of Dabeull, Diamond Ortiz and Mofak recently. It comes in the form of this new cover version of Les Femmes 'Yes You Thrill Me' from the Funk Freaks Dub Spliff Funk series. Sensual and neon-lit roots reggae if we have ever such a thing, and those gorgeous vocals atop are the icing on the cake. Rest assured that there is the mandatory dub version on the flip and that's pretty wicked in its own right too. Produced by King Hippo and the aforementioned Diamond Ortiz.

Review: Get On Down take another trip back into the history of hip-hop once more to give you two crucial cuts on a tidy little silver 7". This time around we're sliding to 1997 as Wu-Tang Clan made their collective return with second album Wu-Tang Forever. After the seismic impact of 36 Chambers, the Staten Island stronghold went off to explore their own independent avenues and returned to the group dynamic with more skill than ever. These two choice joints from Wu-Tang Forever are stone cold classics, within and beyond the Wu-Tang canon. 'Triumph' was a hit single, but 'Heaterz' remains a true fan favourite thanks to True Master's tough beat and a knockout verse from Inspectah Deck.
