Get Ready For The Young Folks (4:03)
Dre's Night (4:13)
Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Get Up & Move (2:52)
Sugar Boy (2:20)
Review: A great choice of reissue by Kent Dance, Carolyn Crawford's 'Get Up And Move' is a fiery vocal soul highlight, and impassioned plea to the object of her affections to "get up and move", before he, she or they do something they "don't wanna do". It's a situation we can all relate to, but this recollection of Crawford's rendition of the scene lends the feeling an extra weight, igniting the inner carpe diem in all of us. From the unheard vaults of Mickey Stevenson's Mpingo label in the early 70s, it now comes double-billed with the Motownier 'Sugar Boy' on the flip, also hitherto unheard.

Just Don't Love You (2:18)
Review: Fledgling boutique vinyl label Creative Soul continues to endear itself to soul lovers with this third lovely 7". It might be the best yet. It looks to 1979 album Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd by a band from Alabama called Centaura. They were Budweiser Comp winners in 1983 and featured on the beer brand's Showdown singles as a result of winning. But before that came the album from which these tunes are taken. They were produced by Bob S Riley with the involvement of a then-prison co-inmate Johnny Bragg. The whole album got reissued in 2013 but Numero Group but this is the first time these two singles have been on one 7" and superb they are too.

Keep Growing Strong (3:36)
Review: Bob Stanley's Measured Mile label comes through with a magnificent double-header from Connie Stevens. This is a real northern soul monster that was arranged by the late great and legendary Philly soul man Thom Bell. Original copies will cost you well over L250. First up are the rich and sumptuous string sounds and rattling tambourines of 'Tick Tock' with its perfect vocals. Originally the b-side tune was titled ''Betcha By Golly Wow' but the angel changed it to 'Keep Growing Strong' after it was a hit for both the Stylistics and Prince. It's another heart warming gem that will have you in a slow spin in no time.

Rachel Maxann - "Find Another Man" (3:08)
Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Both are late night blues without a doubt though andit'sanother case of hats off to Original Gravity records for always keeping things fresh with their ever-changing moods.

Raye Cole - "You Gotta Set Me Free" (3:41)

Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Stay With Me (3:57)
You're So Unreal (4:44)
Review: Soul startlers Crystal Clear (not to be confused with the many house and drum & bass artists of the same name) laid down 'Stay With Me' in the mid-1970s. The song is a sweet and romantic, yet no less punchy, ditty, packed with contrasts between flitty, fay vocals (from an unknown singer no less) and a heavy-set drum recording to juxtapose. Now re-released via Soul Brother, we're reintroduced to the song in all its hip-swanging glory. Just as its themes deal well with reconciliation, we feel to have been reunited with its charms, as we eagerly oblige the command to "stay"...

This first drop of the year comes from label regulars Coast to Coast who had their unreleased and self-titled soul album reissued here back in October 2021. It is the opening track from that glorious record that gets its own pressing on 45 rpm here with an instrumental on the flip. Review: Collins And Collins were originally at the Top Of The Stairs back in 1980 when this one first landed. It has since become a revered underground classic much loved on the modern soul circuit as a timeless gem. The song was first composed by Ashford & Simpson who recorded their own version but when playing live would switch to the Collins & Collins version. The tune first came on CD via Expansion back in 1993 and now gets a first official 7" version back with the exceptionally rare version of Gamble & Huff's 'You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good' which first was recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1975.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The tidy two track 7" opens with the raw soul jazz sounds of 'Everybody Say Yeah' with its blasts of horns, expressive vocals and rolling rhythm section all cutting deep. Building on the success of their previous hits (including the wonderful 'Lost Lost Lost' and 'Wheels Turning') they explore themes of infidelity with raw emotion. Here she embodies a love of, or certainly respect for, Southern Soul here with a bog and bold stomper that has brassy horns and loose tambourines backing a lung busting vocal that is powerful and emotive. It's a track that has an authentic old school sound but with modern production heft. Review: Favorite Recordings has previously championed revered and little-known Francophile disco and boogie gems, mostly on dedicated compilations curated by dusty-fingered digger Charles Maurice. This '45' marks the launch of a new series along similar lines, with each release boasting two hard-to-find tracks accompanied by their original cover art (one on the front, the other on the back). On side A you'll find 'Give It Up' by Belgian band Charms, a warming and loved-up chunk of boogie/mid-80s soul brilliance stacked with luscious synth sounds, rubbery bass guitar and eyes-closed male lead vocals. Over on the reverse is France-Lise's 'Pour-moi ca ma', a simply superb slab of French language disco blessed with a killer bassline, funky guitar licks and some suitably heady horns. Tres bon!

Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Review: Bridge Boots main man Caserta has previously proved to be one of the most talented re-editors around, up there with higher profile artists such as the Reflex and Joey Negro. His latest offering, a red seven-inch single featuring new rearrangements of Diana Ross hit "I'm Coming Out", is another beauty. On the A-side he offers up a "Long Way Mix" that gives more prominence to Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards' killer backing track (partly via stripping it back to the groove at key points) while retaining most of Ross' vocals. Review: 'I Can't Stop This Feeling' is a semi-mythical track from the early days of Motown, credited to the label's leading group of the time The Contours but never officially released. Rescued from an acetate and hotly debated on the many soul music forums, one thing's for sure - this is a perfect slice of early 60s soul whoever is singing on it. You might even hear the subtle bleeps on the audio which marked out listen-only tapes from the Motown vaults for folk working on a project. This is a historical artefact as much as a great tune - a must-grab for any soul head.

It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Review: It's rare we hear reissues from those close to the original horses' mouths, but the work of G.U.S. Records is an exception. Run by vinyl and tape collector Gustavo C., the aim of the imprint is to re-release the soul, funk and early proto-electro of artists from Detroit whose music had only circulated in unreleased demo form. Mainly focusing on funk and boogie, '80s music abounds; notwitshstanding two former releases from rather unrecognised names, their third is a mega-rare single from Central Line. 'Love Will Find It' and 'Do You Remember' have never before seen the light of day, despite the four-piece band's long stint with the major label Mercury. The B-side is a favourite; a unusual slice of falsettoing boogie in triplet time.

Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Cooperettes - "Win All Your Love" (2:49)
The Toppiks - "Win All Your Love" (2:57)
Review: One song, two versions, one killer Philly 45. The Cooperettes got in first during the mid 70s with a very rare copy that picked up momentum during the Northern/modern soul crossover in mid 80s when copies began to surface and never really lost favour as OG copies on I-D-B go for near L500. Flip for a previously unreleased male harmony version by The Toppiks, fronted by Ted Mills a la Blue Magic. Just sit back and feel those falsettos.

Carlton Jumel Smith - "I Can't Love You Anymore" (4:35)
Cold Diamond & Mink - "I Can't Love You Anymore" (instrumental) (4:34)
Review: Since making his debut back in the early 1990s, Carlton Jumel Smith has periodically popped up on a variety of soulful house and modern soul releases. Here the little-known vocalist takes a different approach, re-casting himself as a throaty, James Brown influenced '70s soul singer. He's at his heartfelt, full-throttle best on "Can't Love You Any More", a deliciously heavy and authentic chunk of Southern-fried deep soul complete with additional falsetto parts from fellow singer Pratt. The key to the track's success is the fantastic backing provided by Cold Diamond & Mink. Proof is provided on the flip via the band's effortlessly good instrumental take.

Resque Me (3:51)
Reaching Out To You (3:05)
Review: Four years on from his last outing, veteran Swedish beatsmith Red Astaire is back doing what he does best. Much of the producer's best work has been in an illicit rework/bootleg remix vein, and this is no different. It features defiant new vocals from chanteuse Coco Rouzier over backing tracks built around chunks of vintage rare groove and two-step soul treats. Choose between "Resque Me" [sic], where Rouzier's sweet, compassionate and emotion-rich vocals seemingly float above a languid, jazz-fuelled groove and drifting trumpets, and the jauntier "Reaching Out To You". This super-sweet concoction sees Rouzier in bolder and breezier mode, singing songs of love over rising horns and a groovy backing track. It sounds like a sunshine anthem in waiting.

Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

How Could I Know? (4:26)
Review: During the various lockdowns of 2020 and '21, Crazy P delved deep into their vaults to see what unfinished songs were lurking in the dustier corners of the archive. These were then used as inspiration for new, finished and polished versions. This seven-inch contains two fine examples of this repurposing process. A-side 'If Life Could Be This Way' is suitably strong - a heart-aching, bittersweet chunk of laidback melancholia that sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Balearica and hazy West Coast jazz-rock. It's sure to be a fan favourite in years to come. 'How Could I Know' meanwhile is similarly horizontal, with tear-jerking (electronic) string sounds and a fine lead vocal from Danielle Moore clustering around a clicking, lo-fi drum machine beat

Review: 'After Hours' by Charlie Mitchell aka Vic Marcel ha deco me hugely popular recently and for good reason - it is a super smooth and seductive slice of gorgeous soul music with mellow moves and rare-groove s to spare. Original of this one will costs you well over 250 quid at the moment. It was produced and arranged by veterans Tony Silvester and Bert DeCoteaux while the songwriting was talon care of by J.R. Bailey and Ken Williams. Reverse it for another slice of something just a s special in the form of some mid-tempo soul from the same production crew. What a beauty.

Review: The unequalled Soul Jazz label is serving up some monster funk this month and they don't come much bigger than these two cuts from Chuck Carbo. Opener 'Can I Be Your Squeeze' is a super catchy, break heavy and funk fulled party jam to destroy the floor. Written and produced by the celebrated Eddie Bo, it comes with big drums from New Orleans stick man James Black. On the flip is the ever so slightly more mellow but not less dance 'Take Care Your Homework Friend.' These have long been hard to find and now come pressed nice and loud on fresh wax.

Review: Soul Junction are ever-dependable reissue specialists who look to Detroit vocalists The Counts for their latest slice of gold. The band started out under the name Fabulous Counts and were a five piece band who initially recorded under the mentorship of Popcorn Wylie. They first charted in 1971 before moving to Atlanta where they signed to Michael Thevis's Awae label. Various singles and albums followed and in 1978 one of the tunes they recorded was 'What's It All About,' a gorgeous tune with the most elegant strings and a perfectly string vocal compliment with subtle horn work. 'Watch The Clock' on the flip is a more dance-y number with big Rhdoes chords and driving drum grooves.

Love Ain't Easy (4:01)
Review: The tireless Athens of the North label boss has many ongoing musical missions but one right now is putting out the first-ever 7" singles from a famous 1970s soul album by Crystal Winds. The band is made up of keyboardist Paul Coleman and saxophonist M.C. Morris Brown, and guitarist Martin Dumas co-wrote the a-side here, 'Lover's Holiday' with Brown. It's a gorgeous number with smooth but funky bass licks and soft backing vocals fleshing out the sumptuous sounds. The energy levels pick up on 'Love Ain't Easy' with its swirling, skyward strings, sapling cymbals and more lovely bass playing.

Review: Lovers of heart aching soul are well attuned to the output of the Izipho Soul label. Each and every 7" they serve up is impossibly emotive and the new one is no different from Cornell CC Carter. It features singles taken from the artist's hugely anticipated new album, Next Life, and suggests it's going to be an absolute cracker. It will feature 13 carefully constructed songs with rich 70s and 80s soul influences throughout. Here the two chosen singles offer mid tempo, deep cut funk backed with a big ballad that will melt anyone's heart.

Review: This week we have a new release on California's Funk Freaks, the label that brought us the likes of Dabeull, Diamond Ortiz and Mofak recently. It comes in the form of this new cover version of Les Femmes 'Yes You Thrill Me' from the Funk Freaks Dub Spliff Funk series. Sensual and neon-lit roots reggae if we have ever such a thing, and those gorgeous vocals atop are the icing on the cake. Rest assured that there is the mandatory dub version on the flip and that's pretty wicked in its own right too. Produced by King Hippo and the aforementioned Diamond Ortiz.

Review: Japanese gospel-funk-soul outfit Osaka Monaurail are on a determined mission to spread the word of the lord, usually through elaborate and funky orchestral collaborations. This time, on the single 'Whole Lot Of Lovin', they team up with James Brown collaborator Marva Whitney for a distinctly vocal affair. Straight to the point, hard-driven rhythms and unisonic grooves lend a shocking immediacy to this riveting song.

Review: Carmy Love brings a stylish hint of gospel to the beautiful vocal on this new single on Big A C. 'Rebel' was actually written many years ago yet the lyrics have huge repugnance today. The song has regularly been performed in that time with New Street Adventure but now the live version becomes all the more glorious as a full studio production. On the back is a tune inspired by the fertile soul crossover sounds of the late 60s and early 70s, with funky bass and body brass. These are tunes to warm your heart and uplift you as you leave the bad times behind.

How Close (4:34)
How Close (remix) (4:36)
Review: Written by James Ernard, 'How Close' is a poppy funk track with as much history as killer synths. Written after his previous Ohio-based group Perfect Element declined opening for Prince on tour, Ernard left to set up his own label (which met a similar end as he and co-founder Kennith also had a falling out over creative differences). 'How Close' is a sensational piece of 80s American pop history, with a killer synth line and earworm vocals that'll have you shaking your hips before even realising. Side B has a nippy little remix by an undisclosed producer (which is sometimes the case with such niche pieces of history), that nonetheless breathes even more life into such a colourful track. It's often the 7" records that tell us the full history of the music industry behind the scenes at that time, and this release is no different - a perfect addition to that niche 7" collection you've been building up...

Review: Kent's Dance label run continues to gift us the finest in vintage soul with this stunning double-header from the songwriting mind of Charles Spurling. His track record included writing for James Brown, Hank Ballard and Junior McCants, and while is 'Ball Of Fire' would eventually be recorded by Marva Whitney as an uptempo cut, it's documented here in an earlier, smouldering version by Connie Austin. On the B-side, the pace picks up a little with Spurling himself leading 'You've Got Love On Top of Your Love', which would no doubt go down a storm with the Northern Soul crowd.

This time, they compile two speedy funk tracks from Crystal and J.E.K.Y.S.; 'Funky Biguine' is an homage to the French ballroom style of the same name, from which it draws influence, while 'Looking For You' is a devotional dream from J.E.K.Y.S., a French band singing in English. Slick, quick, and affecting stuff.
