Review: Four years on from his last outing, veteran Swedish beatsmith Red Astaire is back doing what he does best. Much of the producer's best work has been in an illicit rework/bootleg remix vein, and this is no different. It features defiant new vocals from chanteuse Coco Rouzier over backing tracks built around chunks of vintage rare groove and two-step soul treats. Choose between "Resque Me" [sic], where Rouzier's sweet, compassionate and emotion-rich vocals seemingly float above a languid, jazz-fuelled groove and drifting trumpets, and the jauntier "Reaching Out To You". This super-sweet concoction sees Rouzier in bolder and breezier mode, singing songs of love over rising horns and a groovy backing track. It sounds like a sunshine anthem in waiting.

Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

Review: Since making his debut back in the early 1990s, Carlton Jumel Smith has periodically popped up on a variety of soulful house and modern soul releases. Here the little-known vocalist takes a different approach, re-casting himself as a throaty, James Brown influenced '70s soul singer. He's at his heartfelt, full-throttle best on "Can't Love You Any More", a deliciously heavy and authentic chunk of Southern-fried deep soul complete with additional falsetto parts from fellow singer Pratt. Review: This 45rpm from Jr Thomas & Cutlass Cream will have your heart full and your mind dreaming. 'Reflections' is a first single from the pair that finds Thomas moving away from the more Jamaican influenced music he made with The Volcanos for labels Truth & Soul Records and Colemine Records and toward more vulnerable and honest song writing. It could be a reissue of a 60s classic but it isn't and is instead a fine collab with old friend Albert Perez Jr. from Minneapolis. The slow motion rhythms and twinkling melodies are perfect accompaniment for his smoky and downbeat vocals tones.

Review: Izipho Soul is a gold standard of high quality and heart aching soul music. JDs Time Machine ft Cleveland P Jones is another great mix of indie soul and Jazz in animated picture sleeve. Both of these magnificent versions of this lovely track are a few years old but are making their vinyl debut here. 'Kiss Of Freedom' is a grand affair with golden, high class production with noodling bass, sunny chords and a soaring vocals backed with some great harmonies. The long version draws the whole thing out for even more extended bliss.

Review: Ron Henderson released only one album with his Choice of Colour band, and that was Soul Junction in 1976. The North Carolina-based singer-songwriter has become an object of cult admiration over the years which is what might explain how an original of that album can often go for upwards of $800 at auctions. The 2020 P-Vine reissue soon sold out and included an extra single from 1983, 'Gemini Lady.' It is that which now gets pressed up to its own 7". It comes with the same label design as the original with a special jacket to make it even more of a collector's item.

Review: Chant record label head and under-represented South soul genius put out his Bill Haney's Atlanta Soul Brotherhood CD in 1998 which had these two previously unreleased tunes on. Now they finally make it to wax with a good backstory that was told by Bill and published in Voices From The Shadows. It goes that 'The Golden Voice' aka Roy Hamilton was in town and Bill gave him a song to record which turns out to be the majestic A-side here, while The Drifter's Charlie Thomas was also in the area one time when he recorded the b-side. Both gems.

Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Here we get a couple of them with 'Dance Girl' - the last tune they released in 1974 before signing to Event/Spring. It was a real classic at block parties back in the day and on the flip is a tune that will cost you over L1000 if you can find an original, namely 'Keep On Brother Keep On' - the group's second single on Curtis BC Projects II label.

Review: The tireless Athens of the North label boss has many ongoing musical missions but one right now is putting out the first-ever 7" singles from a famous 1970s soul album by Crystal Winds. The band is made up of keyboardist Paul Coleman and saxophonist M.C. Morris Brown, and guitarist Martin Dumas co-wrote the a-side here, 'Lover's Holiday' with Brown. It's a gorgeous number with smooth but funky bass licks and soft backing vocals fleshing out the sumptuous sounds. The energy levels pick up on 'Love Ain't Easy' with its swirling, skyward strings, sapling cymbals and more lovely bass playing.

Review: Crystal Winds is best known for a supreme and sophisticated funk and soul album that was released in 1982 on the Cash Ear label. The tunes from it have never reportedly been on 7" before, so the Athens of the North label boss made it his mission to right that wrong. This one offers up some hugely classy soul sounds for more tender DJ sets or lazy Sunday listening sessions. 'So Sad' is awash with golden chords and intimate, spoken word exchanges between lovers, and on the flip 'Maybe What You Do Comes Back On You' slows down even further, sinking you deep into the richness of the arrangement.

Review: Soul Junction have got more treasure for soul lovers here with a pair of previously unreleased songs from Crystal Motion. The vocal quartet worked out of New Bedford in Massachusetts but originally came from Cape Verde. They are known by hardcore diggers for their one and only other track, 'You're My Main Squeeze', on Frank Fioravanti's Sound Gems label from 1975. The group recorded a demo of the a-side here which has some local success and led to the recording of an album that never was. The flipside 'Million Dollar Baby' is the only other tune from the session to have made it to tape, and now to 45rpm.

Review: Soul startlers Crystal Clear (not to be confused with the many house and drum & bass artists of the same name) laid down 'Stay With Me' in the mid-1970s. The song is a sweet and romantic, yet no less punchy, ditty, packed with contrasts between flitty, fay vocals (from an unknown singer no less) and a heavy-set drum recording to juxtapose. Now re-released via Soul Brother, we're reintroduced to the song in all its hip-swanging glory. Just as its themes deal well with reconciliation, we feel to have been reunited with its charms, as we eagerly oblige the command to "stay"...

Review: Cruisic are a Tokyo-based two piece dealing in electronically-charged jazz fusion. Ryusuke Kakizawa and Yukinari Iwata kicked the project off in 2019 with a cover of 'Inspector Norse', while last year they did their own rendition of 808 State's 'Pacific-707'. This time around they've invited Baku Furukawa to lend some smooth singing to a cover of Tania Maria's classic 'Come With Me', taking the song into dreamy bossa nova territory and providing they can handle vocals just as delicately as the instrumentation with their on-point covers series.

Review: During the various lockdowns of 2020 and '21, Crazy P delved deep into their vaults to see what unfinished songs were lurking in the dustier corners of the archive. These were then used as inspiration for new, finished and polished versions. This seven-inch contains two fine examples of this repurposing process. A-side 'If Life Could Be This Way' is suitably strong - a heart-aching, bittersweet chunk of laidback melancholia that sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Balearica and hazy West Coast jazz-rock. Review: We'd advise serious soul heads to take a look at this one. Part of the "Kent Select" series of dancefloor-focused 45s, it features two previously unissued 1971 recordings, both of which were produced by Mickey Stevenson. In some ways, it's incredible to think that Carolyn Crawford's "Ready Or Not Here Comes Love" has never previously been released; it's a genuinely inspired, up-lifting slab of soaring, stomping soul that will get Northern Soul enthusiasts racing for the dancefloor in their droves. Flipside "What Made You Think", credited to Hodges, James, Smith and Crawford, is almost as good, even if it lacks the rushing, celebratory positivity of the sublime A-side. In a word: essential!

Review: Soul Junction are ever-dependable reissue specialists who look to Detroit vocalists The Counts for their latest slice of gold. The band started out under the name Fabulous Counts and were a five piece band who initially recorded under the mentorship of Popcorn Wylie. They first charted in 1971 before moving to Atlanta where they signed to Michael Thevis's Awae label. Various singles and albums followed and in 1978 one of the tunes they recorded was 'What's It All About,' a gorgeous tune with the most elegant strings and a perfectly string vocal compliment with subtle horn work. 'Watch The Clock' on the flip is a more dance-y number with big Rhdoes chords and driving drum grooves.

Review: Some 30 years since their debut album, the British jazz quartet Corduroy are still going strong with their incredible organ jazz and vocal stylings on a new 7" 'No More Me Me Me / Hypnotoad'. 'No More Me Me Me' is a zany vocal time capsule, with a tongue-in-cheek style that brings to mind Blur's 'Park Life' or literally any B-52s song. Alternatively on the B-side is something much more in Corduroy's playing ground, a sensational instrumental jazz number with an organ focus. Review: Soul Junction's latest release brings together two sought-after heavy soul cuts from the studio of the Poindexter Brothers: their own 1969 heater "What I Did In The Street (I Should Have Done At Home)" - a sweet, Vibraphone-sporting slab of rasping, full-throated, horn-heavy sixties soul just dripping with emotion - and a killer cut they produced a year earlier for singer Vivian Copeland. You'll find that song, "Chaos In My Heart", on the A-side. Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Review: Claude Cooper is a rather mysterious figure despite having got plenty of people talking in the last couple of years. He has picked up some high-profile radio play and after being unmasked recently is back with a gorgeous new funk single on the Friendly Recordings label. This hand-numbered pink vinyl 7" is limited to 300 copies and opens with the mad feel-good vibe of 'Stay A While' with its happy chords and dusty, driving drum funk. It's perfect for sunny days and lazy afternoons and 'Dance Tonight' is a bit more raw and 60s tinged for later in the party.

Review: Danish-German production duo Cool Million (Frank Ryle, Robert 'Rob' Hardt) are specialists in nu-disco and neo-boogie. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

(Jazz) is something that teaches you not only how to play your instrument but it teaches you how to be a person." Considering his craft a lifelong practice, 'Steppin' In' exemplifies this outlook. Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Review: 'I Can't Stop This Feeling' is a semi-mythical track from the early days of Motown, credited to the label's leading group of the time The Contours but never officially released. Rescued from an acetate and hotly debated on the many soul music forums, one thing's for sure - this is a perfect slice of early 60s soul whoever is singing on it. You might even hear the subtle bleeps on the audio which marked out listen-only tapes from the Motown vaults for folk working on a project. This is a historical artefact as much as a great tune - a must-grab for any soul head.

Review: Bob Stanley's Measured Mile label comes through with a magnificent double-header from Connie Stevens. This is a real northern soul monster that was arranged by the late great and legendary Philly soul man Thom Bell. Original copies will cost you well over L250. First up are the rich and sumptuous string sounds and rattling tambourines of 'Tick Tock' with its perfect vocals. Originally the b-side tune was titled ''Betcha By Golly Wow' but the angel changed it to 'Keep Growing Strong' after it was a hit for both the Stylistics and Prince. It's another heart warming gem that will have you in a slow spin in no time.

Review: Collins And Collins were originally at the Top Of The Stairs back in 1980 when this one first landed. It has since become a revered underground classic much loved on the modern soul circuit as a timeless gem. The song was first composed by Ashford & Simpson who recorded their own version but when playing live would switch to the Collins & Collins version. Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Both are late night blues without a doubt though andit'sanother case of hats off to Original Gravity records for always keeping things fresh with their ever-changing moods.

Review: East St. Louis soul singer Raye Cole is on the cusp of big things, having been picked up through talent scouting competitions and drawing praise from high places. Following a debut split single with Rachel Maxann last year, she's back on Original Gravity with her own outing, a hard-stepping, raunchy funk jam which serves as the perfect vehicle for her raw, righteous voice. As well as the slightly naughty original version of 'I'm A Lady' on the A side, there's also a tastefully censored 'Radio Version' on the flip in case you need to be mindful of your audience. Whichever version you plump for, the sass in those horn stabs tells the listener all they need to know.

Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

Review: Los Angeles doo-wop and early rock n roll group The Coasters were fairly prolific in their heyday, making 13 albums from the 60s and throughout the 70s with an often rotting assembly of band members. 'Crazy Baby' is one of thirty that has endured over the years with its hard-hitting Northern Soul synth rhythms, vocals and keys. Now it gets reissued by the same original label that put it out back in 1965. An OG of this is hard to find and fairly expensive because of its cult status so do not sleep on this new reissue.

Review: It's always a buzz to see a new Athens of the North 7" drop onto our shelves. This first drop of the year comes from label regulars Coast to Coast who had their unreleased and self-titled soul album reissued here back in October 2021. It is the opening track from that glorious record that gets its own pressing on 45 rpm here with an instrumental on the flip. The original from core members Mark Beiner and Ben Iverson, 'Love Is The Same' has glorious vocal falsettos and super sweet rhythms that bring feel-good vibes like no other.

Review: Written by James Ernard, 'How Close' is a poppy funk track with as much history as killer synths. Written after his previous Ohio-based group Perfect Element declined opening for Prince on tour, Ernard left to set up his own label (which met a similar end as he and co-founder Kennith also had a falling out over creative differences). 'How Close' is a sensational piece of 80s American pop history, with a killer synth line and earworm vocals that'll have you shaking your hips before even realising. Side B has a nippy little remix by an undisclosed producer (which is sometimes the case with such niche pieces of history), that nonetheless breathes even more life into such a colourful track. It's often the 7" records that tell us the full history of the music industry behind the scenes at that time, and this release is no different - a perfect addition to that niche 7" collection you've been building up...

Review: The Classic Example are a classic example of exemplary boy-girl soul greatness. While they're best known for their self-titled 1972 album, they otherwise remained relatively obscure in their heyday, save for a couple more single releases. While the bulk of their music came out on GSF, recent years have seen to their unearthing by Kent Records, who have taken on the job of reissuing a string of perhaps-released, perhaps-not music from the vaults. 'Right On' is the known one of the bunch; an ant-hater anthem for the ages. 'I Found Me A Girl', meanwhile, is a triplet-time soul jam for the sense of relief that sets in on falling in love.

Review: Soul fans will be delighted with this one from Outta Sight. It serves up two gems from the genre with 'Whenever I'm Without You' up first from Chris Clark. His Motown legacy continues to serve up surprises as this one was discovered only in 2018 despite being recorded back in 1968. Here it makes a glorious vinyl debut backed with another big tune that somehow has never been released before on wax, and that is The Temptations' 'All I Need Is You Love To Me' which was also penned first in 1968. There must have been something in the water to mean neither saw the light of day but at least they do now, some 55 years on.

Review: Cinnamon Soulettes' 'I'll Show You How' is a veritable swooner, demonstrating how just a few short songs can spark an undying love in its listeners - despite the project being rooted in tragedy. It's a cursed record, to say the least: the original tapes were found in a mixture of the University Of Washington State's archive and the estate of their late producer Kearney Barton, both of whom say all the original information about the record was lost in a flood. For that reason, all that is known about The Cinnamon Soulettes is that they are a female vocal trio from Seattle who recorded their only record in the 1970s with Barton. Nobody knows their names. 'I'll Show You How', though, is a stunning love song, melancholic in its trilling piano solos and vocal segues between each member of the trio. The B-side, 'Wishing On A Wishing Well', lifts us out of the prior mood of heartbreak, although its vocal recordings lend an equally haunting mood to its uptempo jump.

Review: Wild Cards serves up a new 7" from a band about which we know nothing of note. The Cnthonics are good at laying down timeless funk sounds, though, with great instrumentals though defining their sound. Up first is the playful sax-led sound of 'Persephone On Rollerskates' which snake-charms its way into your affections. 'Chthonic Rock' on the flip is a brilliantly bizarre fusion of drums, melodies, percussion and whistles that is lo-fi and high class. Super limited to just 300 copies this one so do not miss out on these funky breaks.

Review: Robert Chini (pronounced keeney), a native of Southern California, is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter who began his musical journey as a drummer at the age of five. With a star-studded career as a touring member of many a famous band including Peaches And Herb, Tower Of Power and Air Supply, Chini's efforts have still yet to falter or fly under the radar; quite to the contrary, he's still going strong, currently performing as both a solo artist and studio operator. 'Doin' It all For You' was written and recorded in 1979, while the B-sider here, 'Everlasting Love', was written and recorded three years earlier. Both songs hear Chini sing of commitment and dedication to love, narrating a journey from internal preoccupation with the self to finding a sense of eternity in devotion to another.
