Electro
Binary Choices (5:32)
Broken Circle (4:15)
Momentum Gateway (6:35)
Validity Movement (6:10)
Review: You could well argue that the electro sound of today would be very different - or certainly lacking - without the faultless input of Cignol, aka Paul Hammock. Since around 2008, he has been serving up the gold and now comes another example of that on the Valencian label HC Records. Binary Choices finds him heading deep into a world of cosmic melody, celestial bodies and dreamy atmospheres. As always, the artist manages to combine intelligent pads, synths and percussions with sleek drum programming that powers the trip in style. Whether the acid tinged opener or melancholy of 'Broken Circle' is out favourite is hard to choose, and pointless. All four cuts are essential.

Keyss (2:32)
Electrob (4:32)
Staying On Drugs (2:49)
Review: Irish electro don Cignol is back on Furthur Electronix with more of his top class sonic excursions. He opens this latest EP with 'Glee Arch' which pairs far-sighted chords with celestial pads and broken rhythms. 'Keyss' is a melancholic piece with meaningful chords front and centre and pixelated keys macing around the edges as the woodpecker beats provide the motion. The tenderness of his synths and keys continues on 'Electrob' which has more plaintive melodies paired with bristling beats and then closer 'Staying On Drugs' is a colourful and loose rhythm that feels like it might all fall apart.

N-Ter - "We Will Emerge" (4:46)
Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Franco Cinelli - "Eternal Chant" (13:16)
Neuronal Netwrok - "Basic" (7:37)
Sascha Dive - "FEOS Treatment" (6:03)
Review: The always classy Movida calls upon Franco Cinelli, Neuronal Network and Sasha Dive for this new outing, which takes a deep dive into smooth techno with plenty of healthy Motor City overtones. Cinelli goes first with 'Eternal Chat' which rides on deep and supple drums with deft synths peeling off the groove. Neuronal Network's 'Basic' is a textbook dub techno cut with frosty chord vamps and icy hi-hats over super deep kicks. Last of all, Germany's Sasha Dive brings a little light and playful mood to his 'Foes Treatment' with its shiny leads and more tech house-style grooves.

Time To F
Review: As displayed on her recent Aus Music and Heist Recordings releases, CInthie Christl is more than adept at creating fresh cuts shot through with subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) references to US house cuts of the 1990s. She's on the tip once more on this surprise Shall Not Fade outing, first dousing a rolling house beat and undulating analogue bassline in spacey chords and riffs ('Tough Times'), before joining the dots between late 90s Strictly Rhythm dubs and bouncy New Jersey garage grooves on 'Shuffle & Swing'. Even better is 'Bossa', a fantastically dubby and sub-heavy slab of hypnotic peak-time deep house, while 'Time To F' is a more breezy and sun-splashed affair with restless riffs, squelchy bass and steppers-influenced deep house beats.

Fog (Morgan Geist edit) (5:16)
Fog (Tiger & Woods remix) (5:38)
Fog (NOIA remix) (6:34)
Fog (Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi remix) (5:21)
Review: Riccardo Cioni's 'Fog' has been passed over to a fine selection of artists for this new remix EP on Mondo Groove. The original is a stone-cold 1984 Italo classic that is dark and obscure and was made in Cioni's garage studio on a PPG Wave 2.2, Linn 9000 and Phophet 5. First to rework it is the legendary Morgan Geist who layers the snappy drums and ricocheting synths, while Tiger & Woods get more playful with some unhinged synth effects and chopped-up vocals. NOIA keeps it raw with some nice analogue electro-disco goodness and Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi team up for a loose limbed and stripped-back rhythm with funky bass riffs.

Review: Cirkel Square bills himself as "rominimal, rotech, rodub, micro and everything in between", which gives you a good idea of what to expect as you slip into this latest from the emergent talent. On this occasion the music is arriving on Australian label Maru and it's yet another reminder to keep tabs on this new talent in the minimal scene. 'Beyond' has a hazy mood thanks to its fine slithers of pads hovering in the back of the mix, but there's plenty of elegant figures darting around the front of the mix to keep the track from getting too sleepy. That also means minimal veteran Reboot has plenty to work with on his typically streamlined version of the track.

Review: Originally written by Leroy Burgess and James Calloway for Patrick Adams' Phreek, iconic NYC disco boogie gem "The Weekend" enjoyed a Class Action re-up in 1983 with two bonafide mixing titans at the controls; M&M and Larry Levan. The former was all about the big synth gloss and a really broad groove while Levan gave it a serious DJ twist with a two minute intro that really broken down each element. Party time.

If you’re serious about the legacy of Italo disco, Claudia T’s ‘Dance With Me’ should already be a familiar classic. Polish label Vintage Pleasure Boutique have revived this essential piece of Euro party gear with a range of versions to suit all manner of dancefloor situations, leading in with the original uptempo ‘Dance Version’ before dropping the tempo in seductive fashion with the ‘AP Mono Remix’. Chris Van Buren jacks it back up with some pointed Lately bass heat that holds a laser-eyed focus on the club, while the ‘Vocoder Version’ operates as a spiced up dub with some choice robs-vocal processing.

Review: New gen energy with old school frequencies, Digital's protege Tim Clay lets rip with a level-upping dispatch. 'New Beginnings' is a statement in every direction. By far his heaviest hitting drums to date, you can feel the Function force on this one! 'Body Move' takes more of drum & bass approach with its strident piano stroke and sensual vocal - think Total Science or early Headz. Finally 'Information Overload' is a right old grizzly 95-era Bristol groaner. Rude in sonic and health. Big moves from Monsieur Clay.

Infrasoul - "Quanto Amor" (5:28)
Review: Collab EPs are back in fashion, and Tropical Disco are leading their charge. The boundlessly potentiated space between disco, dance and jazz is their game, and 'Tropical Disco Volume 23' proves they can win it time and time again. Four tracks of trumpetting 4x4 glory-buzz dominate this EP. Clean Is Good wipes the floor with disco-edit edge, while Moodena comes through with a mighty mood of motor city madness, and Sartorial and Infrasoul share the B-side with a pair of broken, drum-banging and glass-shattering instrumentals. There's even a disco flute in there somewhere.

Review: Berlin-based house producer Joe Cleen has landed on SlothBoogie's Edit label a few times with his fine revisions of the classics. The last was in 2021 and now he is back with his Chapters EP for more of the same from the worlds of disco and house. There is florid Philly soul joy to stomping opener 'The Juice' that soon sweeps you off your feet. 'I'll Be There' is slightly deeper but heavily percussive disco funk and 'Summer Wind' is a jazzy interlude. The flip side takes off again on a trio of joy-filled, hands-in-the-air instrumental disco bangers.

The relative newcomer impresses from the off with 'Tell Me' which is a steamy vocal over a fulsome house beat. 'Without Your Love' cuts loose on a more heady and cosmic house groove with some gorgeously seductive trumpet lines drifting in and out of ear shot and 'Strictly Business' is fun, cuddly basement grooves for intimate parties. Review: Techno arriving on 7" is not an all too common sight, but why not? This release from the fledgling Dispari out of Germany suggests it works well. Cloud Management and Gavsborg take one side each, starting with the former. Their 'Tempentary Dance' pairs thudding and broken kick drum patterns with dreamy and rising synth sequences and spoken words. It's brilliantly beguiling. The flip then finds Gavsborg offering 'Did Not Make This For Jah_9' (feat Shanique Marie) which is dark and moody, dubbed out and dystopian deep techno.

Review: One of many stone-cold Patrick Adams disco funk gems, 1981's "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By" enjoys a long-awaited reissue 37 years after its last outing. Its sprightly slippery groove and floating falsettos remain as strong and as a vital as they ever did... But at a fraction of the once triple-figure price tag it's had over the years. Review: You can always depend on Ali Wells' mighty Perc Trax for the most brutal industrial strength tackle and its latest release certainly delivers that. Scottish enfant terribles Clouds take up the reins on TPT 096 titled Clubmatter. All the classic tropes of 90s dance music are mashed together in an unholy mixture on the foreboding energy of 'Ravesight', heading into post Y2K peak time techno on the functional main room affair of 'NRG - Density' and 'Corestyle' respectively - the latter's injection of classic trance arpeggios adding to its adrenalised effects. Finally, the Perth drug legends go out all guns blazing on the pummeling 'Liquid Tank' with its foreboding bassline underpinned by the most visceral kicks.

Review: Brooklyn-based Ryan Clover lays down some slamming new tunes here, which is perfect for the label they land on - Eris Drew's always emotive Ecstatic Editions. 'We Love (We Feel)' kicks off with a steamy mix of driving drums and floating synths that comes alive with lush leads. 'My Light, My World' then ups the pace with some quicker, slicker drums and more majestic synth daubs full of soul. 'Here We F***ing Go' is another high-octane cut this time with a more cosmic sense of wonder in the leads as the drums power on and last of all is the throwback sounds of 'Let Me Tell U Sumthin.'

Review: Italian collective Club Soda is deep house don Nicola on bass, Simone on drums and samplers, and Filippo on keys. It has now been three years since their fine debut album dropped so we are glad they are back with more of their fiery fusions. Opener 'Basso E Batteria' (feat Sara Loreni) has sentimental chords but dusty and early Chicago drums with a dreamy vocal, while 'Gin Tonic' is a more laidback, sunset-style deep house jam. Three different versions of 'Basso E Batteria' then close out the EP, from a sensuous acapella to the bouncing house funk of the Cristalli Liquidi remix via the dreamy Italo bliss of the Hill Lost dub mix.

Review: Last year long time Flower Records associates Masanori Ikeda and Takumi Kanedo (best known for his work as part of Cro-Magnon) released their debut album as Coastlines, a stunningly sunny, laidback affair that touched on everything from nu-jazz and nu-disco to dub, Latin rhythms and Balearic beats. Here they offer up a fresh double-header on a must-check 7" single. A-side "East Coast" is particularly alluring, with the duo joining the dots between Nils Frahm piano pieces, gentle nu-jazz grooves and wide-eyed Balearic ambience. The synths come to the fore on flipside "West Coast", an arguably even sunnier affair with slo-mo Latin beats, mazy solos and glistening guitars to the fore.

Review: Cobert kicks off the Domain label with an adventurous and cinematic EP of well designed techno here. 'Mysteriousbrainpedal' is the scene setter that rides on a nice tight, electro-tinged and body-popping rhythm as the chords all swirl around. 'Track 2' is a pent up cut with deep vibes and urgent grooves. 'TBS' is a fury of old school breaks and acid and 'One Of The Last' has a post-punk feel and lithe synth work that recalls early Two Lone Swordsmen. This most diverse EP closes with a downtempo cut full of machine soul in 'Every End Is Beginning.'

Review: Fancy another trip to Fantastic Planet? We do, and this third one is the best yet. It finds Robert as your sonic host and laying down four cuts of techno that is designed to twist you inside out. 'Cat Shits In The Snow' is a disgusting title but a fantastic tune - electro-tinged techno tautness with snappy snares and wonky synth leads. 'Track 2' brings a haunting sense of late-night intrigue with its eerie leads and rolling linear drums and then the flip gets more freaky with the thumping and textured intensity of 'Mask 001' and sinewy electronic collisions of 'Mask 002'.

Now Athens Of The North have dusted down these two smooth as silk soulful disco jams and given them a fresh pressing. Review: The latest Coco Bryce EP is different to much of his previous work, eschewing the retro-modern banger-science for something that edges much closer to liquid jungle. Fittingly for the style, an core theme on 'My Space' is that of personal dominion and interiors; like the reams of potential found in a family living room or kitchen, the tracks here are interpretable as everything from 'chill' to 'nostalgic' to 'creepy', depending on how you choose to hear them. The palette is eerie and objective, though Bryce's usual preference for unpolished joy shines through as ever in his choice of samples.

Review: Detroit-based Code Industry, for those who know, were a highly regarded and influential EBM-techno outfit. The always reliable Dark Entries has been digging in their vaults to serve up this vital reissue of their Structure EP. The quartet of Rob Myers, E.N. Sevy, Kyl Crys, and William Keith formed in 1989 having previously worked as Code Assault and were rare black artists working in the world of EBM and industrial. They were socially and politically minded so issues of racism, the media, and the hypocrisy of patriotism all comes up in their music which is denied by taught synths and dark vocal whispers that echo the work of acts like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb. Add in high tech grooves and you have s fantastic EP that was originally released in 1991 on the Antler-Subway label.

Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Review: .Coldplay - where on Earth do you start? On the one hand, snubbed by 'real musos' for their broad crossover appeal and uncanny ability to make every song feel like it was written for the next Richard Curtis movie. Nevertheless, when a band achieves such levels of success, you have to accept there's definitely something in their water. In this case, a deft knack for penning arrangements that invoke feelings as big as the stadiums the tracks themselves were built to fill.
Prospekt's March is a great example, but also spotlights the fact that Coldplay isn't just shorthand for rousing chart-friendly soft rock anthems. Originally released in 2008, and taking plenty of almost-made-it tracks from the studio sessions that led to preceding album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, this eight-song offering spans everything from hands in the air sing-a-long hits ('Life In Technicolour', 'Lovers In Japan') to achingly beautiful piano solos ('Postcards From Far Away'), sombre brass balladry ('Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground') and - wait for it - high-production hip hop ('Lost+').

This new single is the first 12” on the Domanda label they call home, and it shows off the band at their best, with core members Alberto Lincetto, Nicolo Masetto and Tommaso Cappellato joined by none other than Danilo ‘MCDE’ Plessow moonlighting on Moog for the six-minute odyssey ‘Tempo Al Tempo’. As well as the spellbinding original version on the A side there’s a show-stopping twist on the track from legendary remixer Patrick Gibin on the flip which zeroes in on the house-compatible qualities of the rhythm section to make for a DJ-friendly version which will light a fire under any assembled throng of party people.

Luke Garcia/Colossio - "Situation" (5:27)
Colossio/Luke Garcia - "My Body" (5:58)
Review: Colossio and Luke Garcia combine on this new EP for Microcastle and offer up a mix of solo and collaborative cuts. Musically, techno is the foundation sound here but is explored far and wide. Colossio gets things underway with 'Amen' which is all fizzing pads and buzzy synths over tough drums. Luke Garcia's 'Ryen' is then an explosive mix of strobe lit and peak time tackle with writing lines and freeform energy. Then the pair combine for 'Situation' which is more white knuckle techno and finally 'My Body' which is a dark industrial cut for tense moments.

What A Night (4:38)
Review: Veritable mind-readers, the anonymous artist Comb Edits have us clairvoyantly sussed. They know we feel it. Coming through the Norwich-based I Travel To You label for their third release, this release amounts to two edits of older songs whose origin, we're ashamed to admit, we can't track down. Honest, live and funky, the tracks span two sides of the same coin, with 'I Know You Feel It' a convincing slo-mo funk edit, and 'What A Night' a cosmick, reverb-laden freakout version of a Japanese obscurio.

Communism (LP version) (2:09)
Review: Common is a giant of the hip-hop world and his eternally loved 1994 long player Resurrection is one of the best things he ever did. 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is an iconic tune taken from it, and one that is said by many to be one of hip-hop's great ever tunes. It is so admired because of its great lyrical twist and is now on 7" for the first time ever. This vital rap record is timeless and a perfect personification of hip hop which finds Common lamenting what the genre became and how commercial it was after a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s. A gorgeous sample of George Benson's 'The Changing World' is the icing on the cake.

Review: The Conductor's The Glow Up is a new six track album that bottles up tons of new wave, disco, funk, pop and soul classics and reworks them for the dance floor. There is the pumping funky house and camp vocal cries of 'Don't Go' and the hands in the air soul grooves of 'EWF Vs KC" (EDM mix 1)' before a piano remix of a Eurythmics classic. 'Higher Emotions' kick off the flip side with something a little deeper and more tender and 'Rollin With The Tiger' is a lung bursting diva special from Adele. 'Sin City Music' closes with a sweeping groove to lift you off your feet.

Delectable U (T Groove remix) (4:33)
Review: For their latest release, Six Nine Records has taken a deep dive into the back catalogue of Aussie nu-disco duo Confection, an outfit who released a wealth of (largely overlooked) cuts throughout the last decade. 'Delectable U' first featured on the pair's CD-only 2012 album Private Conversations and features core members Joshua Bageley and Juanita Tippins in full-on revivalist 80s soul mood - all rubbery bass guitar, glossy FM synth sounds, eyes-closed lead vocals and slow-motion S.O.S Band beats. This time round, it comes backed with a fresh remix courtesy of T-Groove that subtly speeds up the beats, thickens the bassline, showcases the band's Chic-style guitar licks and drags the track further towards nu-disco dancefloors. Simply superb!

Review: The Sound Migration label takes another trip back in to the CATT articles to explore the proto-trance and early bleep techno sound they were pushing from 1988-1991. Another five essential gems from the modestly sized catalogue get an airing here, kicking off with Confidential's haunting 'Amphibious Carbine' followed by the boxy pressure of Exocet's 'Nitrogen'. This is astounding stuff throughout, not least the freak-zone trip of Holy Ghost's 'Walking On Air', which sounds like the common denominator between Ibiza and Goa in their nascent days as party destinations. Don't sleep on the clattering funk of Exocet's 'Overdose' either, a seriously snappy groover with all kinds of oddball sampling going on.

Review: Expansion's focus right now is on reissuing classic tracks alongside a newer version of it. They are all coming on tidy 10" eco vinyl in mad limited numbers and next up is Norman Connors and Bembe Segue. Connors dropped his superb 'Mother of the Future' in 1975 and it is a mad jazz dancer with layer upon layer of Afro drumming, loose percussion and expressive vocal ad-libs. Flip it over and we're taken to 2008's live version of the same tune by Bembe Segue. It's a little less intense but no less busy, with silky jazz grooves and new vocals layering in some future soul.

Highlights run rife from the opening flutters and skips of Conscious Species' 'Warming Up' to the walloping swing and funk of Pastaman's finale 'Take Your Time'. Don't take that title literally, either! This 12" is limited and likely to fly as fast as the breaks themselves.

This duo hails from Miami and focuses on space disco sounds that fans of the famous Metro Area style are sure to love. They remain mysterious themselves but their beats are brilliantly designed with plenty of retro-future pads, cosmic arps and tight basslines full of colour, texture and soul. Like Daft Punk but deeper and more dubbed out. All four of these cuts are sure to get floors going but also bring plenty of style.

Review: Nicola Conte is one of the central figures in the Schema story, and his nu jazz and broken beat partnership with Gianluca Petrella has yielded some golden music in recent years. Nigeria originally came out in 2018, and then last year popped up on the duo's People Need People LP, but now it's getting a proper remix treatment which sees Tall Black Guy twisting the track out as a heady disco house roller for sundown moments when you need a little jazzy flair in the proceedings. That version comes in vocal and instrumental versions, and then the mighty Andres steps up for one of his simmering groove escapades as he delivers an extended remix of 'African Spirits'.

Review: Earlier this year, we were treated to two top-notch Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell remixes of 'Inner Light', one of the standout cuts from Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's fantastic collaborative album People Need People. Here we're treated to two more fresh takes on cuts from that essential LP. On side A, DJ Spinna gives his 'galactic soul' take on 'New World Shuffle', re-imagining the track as a languid but floor-friendly fusion of cosmic soul, neo-boogie, deep house and contemporary jazz-funk electronics. Equally as impressive is former Ron Trent protege Anthony Nicholson's remix of 'Inner Light', where twinkling jazz pianos, spacey synth sounds, evocative synth-strings and Raashan Ahmad's fine spoken word vocals rise above a sumptuous and luxurious deep house groove.

Their recent album found them exploring a wide range of music in our globalised world with nods to Detroit, disco, house, and jazz. Now Berlin-based New York don Fred P offers up two of his reinterpretations. They are of course long, deep, spiritual and moving in both physical and emotional ways.

Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

Review: Danish-German production duo Cool Million (Frank Ryle, Robert 'Rob' Hardt) are specialists in nu-disco and neo-boogie. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Review: It's a damn shame Cool Runners aka the duo of Paul Tattersall and Chris Rodel and was such a short-lived group because the tunes they made are next level. This reissue proves that with their 1982 single 'Checking Out' served up on a 12" with the sought-after 'High on a Feeling' on the flip. The open is lush street soul with boogie bass and twanging funk guitar riffs topped off with a gorgeous vocal. The second offering 'High On A Feeling' has leggier drums and more of a disco feel, but still plenty of brilliant boogie in the bass. Two cult classics, then.

It first Cameron his label Mad Indian Records but is now reissued by the excellent Death Is Not The End sub-label 333. 'Freedom' was written while the talented vocalist was in prison and details what he saw as the unfairness of the judicial system back then. Now, his Oonops label picks out their favourite joints from it for this tasty little 7" pressed on recycled black wax. Out kicks off with the old school breaks and freewheeling Rhodes chords of 'Goin All Out' complete with retro verses. 'Blood, Sweat and Soul' is another classically inclined beat with snippets of James Brown's wordless noises and warm organs. 'Hot Pursuit' goes big on the basslines and 'Jerry's Goove' closes with some, well, country influences.
