Review: After 15 years of live space-rock improvisations and jam sessions around Europe, Bambi Davidson finally got round to delivering their second LP last month. Warmly received by old fans and new, here we find the title track repurposed as an extensive 13 minute exercise in spatial expressionism. Dreamy, deep and full of endless twists and turns, this is the epitome of modern cosmicity. Claremont never cease to surge forward.

Review: There's a carefree, lackadaisical and generally upbeat disposition running through this incredibly welcome record from Devendra Banhart. Something of an enigma - poet, artist, actor and (of course) singer/songwriter - we have the sunshine of his adopted Californian home to thank for this one, with the album nodding to the slick and inviting beach pop said state invented. There's plenty more going on here than besides well polished niceness, though. Each delicate note is played with a purpose that's feels far more commanding than the loose vibe, background choruses recreate the glory days of soft soul with pinpoint precision, while the range of instruments at play is nothing short of impressive. It's unlikely you'll hear a nicer thing this year, and if you do we'll eat our words at the first opportunity.

Review: This official reissue of Bela Lugosi's Dead: The Bela Session comes on black and red splattered vinyl this time around and includes previously unreleased tracks that have been mastered from the original demo tapes of their first ever recording session together. The post-punk outfit's debut single was released initially in 1979. Bela Lugosi's Dead is not only their first single, but also often gets mentioned as the first goth record. It has since been covered by Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack and Nouvelle Vague. The rest of the tunes from the demo session remain hugely innovative, reflecting their post-punk and dark-glam style with dub reggae influences that would further evolve in their output that followed and explain why the band went on to such cult status.

Review: 2022's stunning album Once Twice Melody was a fine example of Beach House doing what they do best - living bang up to that name, with intimate-but epic instrumentation falling somewhere between surf-y jangle and grand shoegaze. 'Become' is definitely on a similar tip, and as such feels much like an extension of the long form.
Dig a little deeper, though, and scratches begin to show. While the full-length record represented Beach House reaching for the stars, or at least the moon, and stepping into the role of festival headliners, here the sense of pure confidence and occasion is less pronounced. That may not be a bad thing, mind, because while Once came across like a finished article, refined and prepared, things here seem somehow rawer, as though we're sitting in on a session as oppose to getting the signed off product.

Review: Andy Bell's debut solo single gets reworked twice here by Pye Corner Audio, with the originals also included. First up is a version of 'The Commune' that's slow and heady. Sludgy drums and bass bring murk while distant keys add a little ray of light and hope somewhere in the distance. Plastic Bag (Pye Corner Audio remix) sounds like a lost cut made by The Stone Roses and Primal Scream back in the nineties. Its another one mired in lo-fi fuzz and fioth, which is only shown up even more when you hear the more airy originals.

Review: Ah, Andrew Bell - you've always been a hopeless romantic in our eyes. Lead singer of Erasure, queer icon, exceptional songwriter and a wonderfully talented studio head (both as producer and remixer), those who don't consider themselves avid fans (fools, basically) may not immediately recognise him as a powerhouse acoustic artist, too, but take it from us, All On You isn't the only example of this guy doing the do unplugged.
All On You arrives with typically high expectations in its wake; we've been waiting some time for this and the contents do not disappoint. Both the original work here and the exceptional re-reading of Paris Angels' classic pop-acid house smash hit 'Perfume' are incredible displays of imaginative repurposing, the latter being a particularly unique alternative version. But even Bell's own tracks feel and sound different without the trappings of amplification. It all sounds rawer, and more honest, than many artists allow.

Ride guitarist and singer Andy Bell has been busy in recent times, to put it mildly, as plans to release three EPs and an album between April and June 2021 prove. All set to be put out under the series title 'Ever Decreasing Circles', The Indica Gallery EP is the first in that set, and suggests we're in for a very, very interesting time when the next instalments follow.
The release comprises five remixes of tracks from Bell's 2020 solo outing, The View From Halfway Down, with reworkings completed by Martin Jenkins' Pye Corner Audio project, and the sixth piece here coming in the form of Bell's own edit of a PCA remix of his work, here credited to his GLOK alias. Name-dropping done, the record is a dense electronic trip into psychedelic cosmic disco slo-mo territories, dream-like ambient beauty and loose, baggy-trousered, nostalgic elec-indie fare.

Review: Here's a question for you: What happens when you take a track by a British power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre Balearica to remix it? You get the latest 12" missive from Claremont 56, which sees Bella Figura's "Better Man" reworked twice in impressive fashion by Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley. If you are familiar with Bratley's output for s It Balearic, Bird Scarer and Tsuba, you know the man breathes cosmic goodness and his work on Bella Figura's track offers a subtle new version that loses none of Justin Gartry's bluesy poignancy whilst adding a sparsely treated beat and plenty of low lying studio trickery.

Review: Although Regal themselves had reissued a number of The Beta Band originals not too long ago, Rhino has come through this Autumn with a new bunch of represses from the band's '90s output. Champion Versions, alongside The Patty Patty Sound, is one of the outfit's defining moments, not least because of "Dry The Rain", a song which is instantly recognizable in everyone's mind thanks to those lazy, wailing vocals, chuggy drums and melting trumpets. Although that tune is clearly the winner on this EP, "I Know" is equally creative thanks to its broken shreds of percussion and ethereal guitar, whereas "B+A" is a true stoner rock number, and "Dogs Got A Bone" showcases the band's inherent folk sensibilities. Gorgeous.

Review: 1998's Los Beta Bandidos was the perfect addition to The Beta Band's catalogue when it was released. While their previous two EP's played and experimented with stoner rock and folk, their third release was deeper, more traditionally musical but nonetheless coated in the band's quirky outsiderism. "Push It Out" contains the group's familiar vocals except that their surrounded by a jazzier framework, and the same can be said for "It's Over", a deep little number with a heavy folk twist. On the B-side, "Dr Baker" is a beatless hymn backed by a lonesome piano before being eaten up by delays and deformed guitar riffs, while "Needles In My Eyes" is a defining indie tune for the more pensive souls. Another smacker of a reissue; hats off.

Review: Originally out in 1997 on the utterly independent Regal imprint, The Patty Patty Sound represented the true core of The Beta Band, and of the experimental folk scene as a whole. The Scottish band, although largely operating on the outskirts of commercial success, have always had a cult following of diggers who either scouted their breaks of their general mash up of different styles and influences. "Inner Meet Me", for instance, takes an indie kind of vibe and twists it to its very limits with the help of weird and wonderful electronic manipulations, while "The House Song" shakes its way across a disco beat and comes out the other end with a trip hop groove. On this killer EP you'll also find some downtempo moments on "The Monolith", and more classic rock sounds via "She's The One", served with a distinct folk flavor, of course. Unmissable and timeless; a truly recommended piece of wax for your collection.

Review: Word of a sixth album from Big Thief comes with their latest track 'Vampire Empire'. First debuting live on Stephen Colbert's Late Show in March 2023, its lyrics express an inner conflict at "vampire empires", of the tendency for relationships to err towards toxic, parasitical and contingent mindsets and a rallying cry for infinite and unbroken loves. Review: Billy Nomates is coming off the back of a hugely acclaimed album in 2002. That was the self titled work on Invada Records and now she follows it up with a new EP that has already had heavy plays on BBC 6Music. Billy even stepped in for Iggy Pop on his show and impressed with her selections. Here the artist develops her unique sound and unflinching lyrics and says of the music that it is "predominantly about communication breakdowns; personally, mentally, physically. Black Midi opening their latest with frantic drum rolls and tense melodic string loops, it conjures memories of movie scores like Psycho and Requiem For A Dream, seemingly threatening to explode into a new metal assault. That doesn't quite happen, but the hallucinatory cacophony - not a million miles from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - leaves nobody behind. Or, more accurately, leaves no prisoners.
The English experimental rockers strike again, and with aplomb, as the track ploughs forward on its uncompromising, frenetic and anxious course, marking this out as arguably their most musically accomplished (certainly most musically extravagant) song yet. A huge contrast to the suitably redemptive, strangely empowering acoustic guitar and soulful vocal duet, 'Despair'. The word 'original' does not do this lot nearly enough justice.

Review: Slingin' slangin guitars, skittering drums and synths from BRIT School graduates Black Midi deliver a sound that's semi-ironic with all matter of punk leanings. With references abound to New York's heyday of experimental new wave and art rock, this two-track 12" for Rough Trade sees the four-piece edge that bit closer to their anticipated debut album called Schlagenheim. Due for a release this June, most of Schlagenheim was said to have been laid down in five days with producer Dan Carey (Bat for Lashes, Bloc Party) and these two tracks go to some length in introducing the band's raw talent, their meteoric rise and vision of a gone but not forgotten CBGBs.

Review: Tender-voiced crooner James Blacke dropped this EP of cover songs back in December 2020, but in time for Record Store Day it now gets a wax reissue. Lovers of sad songs rejoined at their mopey here tackling some of these tunes from artists such as Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, and Beyonce. "It's been a joy to discover new music and new ways of playing songs I've already heard," he said at the time and it's just as nice for us to hear him working with different than usual source material.

Review: After two sterling bouts from Powell, the burgeoning Diagonal label turn their attention to London outfit Blood Music, led by Simon Pomery. With a distinct nod to the focused noise of Sonic Youth, and the breathless vocals of Thurston Moore to boot, Pomery is on fire on EP opener "Rare Earth Material", all throttling drums and huge chords thwacks with a cavernous quality to them. "Speak Like Violence" is a slightly less direct affair, taking a meandering course through shifting phases of squall and distortion but no less energetic en route.

Review: Helena Hauff's label continues to subvert all expectations by celebrating the truly underground and ignoring all expectations to provide obvious club material in line with her DJ sets. Instead we get treated to Blood Sport, a daring post punk band with a whiff of The Pop Group in their frenzied, messy style and plenty of sonic trickery occurring in between the intricate playing. "Harsh Realm" has the textural finish of earliest Cabaret Voltaire, but with a little more deft playing from the intensely talented players. "Boiled In Dust" meanwhile has a distinctly afrobeat-meets-industrial spirit that makes for striking, original material that should appeal to lovers of the truly alternative side of British music culture.
