Review: French label D3 - which when pronounced in French sounds like their word for Detroit - is a decade old and celebrates the milestone with a special three-part EP series. As has always been the case over that 10 year period, the sounds it serves up are deep and housey. This various artists affair kicks off with AsTreJinkins' slow and propulsive 'Terror' before some nice airy and live sounding broken beats from New Digital Fidelity. Moroka picks up the pace with some hi-tek soul that sounds straight from the Motor City and Byron The Aquarius shows off his mastery of the keys again with a dreamy deep cut 'Tua Su Ra'. Nico Lahs shuts down with a heavyweight beatdown in the form of 'It's Spelled BARI.'

Review: Mr. Ultrafino sent out a message with this new album which explains that Darryl Baalki is a super private person. He grew up just with his mother and his father's music collection. He believed it contained the entirety of the history of recorded music and went about making new sounds using samples of it. Whether that is true or not we don't know, but the music is quality. It's spiritual, deep, enchanting, jazzy house with a broad spectrum of emotions. There are late-night lullabies like 'Louis The Third' and more bumping but still cuddly cuts like 'Hear Me Up' amongst many highlights.

Review: Mojuba is a real stamp of quality when it comes to more traditional house sounds with a heavy US bent. This new EP is another standout in that mood with Chicago original Bernard Badie behind the beats. It's a fiery one to start thanks tot he yelping female vocals that busy out of the mid tempo house drums. After that party-starting opening gambit comes the more wonky 'Bounce' with its tanging sound effects and taught bass. 'This Track' explores a slightly garage-tinged sound with scraping hits and swinging drums and last of all is 'Open Up' which is a heads down gem for the afters.

Review: Kris Baha had a big year in 2019 with the release of his debut album on CockTail d'Amore and an EP on Pinkman, and now the Australian body music man in Berlin is back with a high-pressure heater for [Emotional] Especial. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Especial then call on a cast of remixers to interpret the track in different ways, from Timothy J Fairplay amping up the dystopian disco tropes to Das Ding creating a sleek electro-funk twist with the original's gothic undertones intact.

Review: This glorious package of remixes of the BaianaSystem band draws together contemporary Brazilian sounds with plenty of modern dance floor flourishes. A?gua is the standout track from their 2018 LP and is a poem to the bands native Bahia people with the legendary Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. It is perfect material to rework for different settings and deep house don Jimpster does that with his fat bottomed, tropical remix then stripped back dub. Brazilian producer Diogo Strausz joins forces with RNT boss JKriv on the flip for a more drawn out and cosmic exploration that pumps up and down on weight bass and that lovely loose jumble of percussion.

This time out he joins forces with Brian Abelson for a six-track excursion that works well beyond the confines of a dancefloor. 'The Prelude' is a gorgeous downbeat cut that sounds like it's been played live with lo-fi drums and funk bass riffs. 'The Arc' is surging and soulful deep techno and 'I Am Free' is a driving cut with jumbled percussion and loose claps under a passionate vocal cry. Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Review: Scottish party starter Sally C is behind the bolshy brilliance of the Big Saldo's Chunkers label. So far the releases have come at a steady rate but have always been of utmost quality. Bella takes care of the label's fourth outing and it's another peak time outing full of big fun. 'Note To Self' is a mix of potent breaks, trance chords and rave energy where 'Orchestra Spring' is more direct and bouncy with a rugged bassline pumping the breaks and 'Odd Symphony' then slips into a deeper vibe still but one that is no less dynamic. Here for MotorCity Wine he revisits his Back To Bahia series with a third volume that finds him flexing his Afro-Brazilian deep house chops. The 7" opens up with the jazzy boogie of Lsaura' which is steeped in Minneapolis funk and will get cultured dancefloors in a spin. Review: Hot Creations has now put out well over 225 records, which is no mean feat, but even more impressive is that it still very much sets the conversation for a certain section of the house world. This new EP pairs off Beltran with Harry Valencia and offers some interesting fusions of tribal, Latin, house and tech. There is a wonky feel to opener 'Origins' (3AM Tusi mix) with its characterful vocal chants and percussive grooves, while Beltran's solo cut 'Tira A Roupa' (feat Mc Jajau - Putaria mix) has a Spanish feel and a fat bass guitar riff that brings rubbery funk to the crisp tech drums. Last of all, Harvy Valencia goes it alone on closer 'Brut' which is more steamy and sweaty and ready for some sun-kissed open-air deployment.

Review: Three years after he concluded a run of fine EPs on Delusions of Grandeur, Ben Sun has brought his musically rich, hard-to-pigeonhole fusion of deep house, jazz-funk and nu-disco to Razor N Tape Reserve for the very first time. Review: Continuing his foray into 4/4 after his very recent turn on Futureboogie, this time Marco Bernadi has linked up with the Rawax crew for some more of that gutsy, full-bodied groove business. The synths on "The Garden Of Secrets" once again reveal Bernadi's electro roots, while the crisp and bumping beat stays slow and seductive. "Don't Bother" gets into a more twitchy frame of mind, opting for a more dystopian sci-fi kind of demeanour that leans towards techno drum patterns and interlocking melodies. Things remain decidedly freaky for the deadly "Synthetic Squyrs", albeit in a simmering under the surface fashion, and "Marching Ants" rounds things off with some dusty beat science and plenty of atmospherics.

Review: Like Father, Like Son sees Big Strick and his prodigious son Generation Next team up for a split 12" showcasing this pair of criminally underappreciated Detroit producers. "Rain Dance" sees the elder of the two deliver a deep techno journey filled with abstracted textures and organic chimes that sound, while the young Generation Next shows a remarkable maturity beyond his years on "And You Too", where sparse, subtle chords and the simplest of melodies drift by on a light rhythm. Bill Beaver is a Sound Signature and Mahogany Music alumnus, Darren Abrams wrote the classic 'Loose Piano' on Third Ear Recordings and Darryl Tis is the third piece of the puzzle. This EP features a repress of 'Its The Life,' a forgotten classic from the D that first came in 2002 and now costs a small fortune on Discogs. Having had some great feedback on their first releases, they took a break to focus on their solo projects and other endeavours in and around the music industry, but make their comeback on Powerhouse. With the sweet as candy ditties like "Slug", to hazy and vaporised drifters like 'Locally Lost' or moments of sublime weirdo humour as heard on 'Chocolate For Breakfast' this could well be the most awesome comedown album of 2020.

Review: This week's lesson in simple musical mathematics is demonstrated by Tensnake and Aloe Blacc. The former's inexorable rise in 2010 has perhaps been matched by the worldwide popularity of the latter's "I Need A Dollar", so getting Mr Niemerski on board to remix the track was a smart move. The end results are typically appealing, with Blacc's vocals looped brilliantly around a burning deep house arrangement that peaks in all the right places. The central energetic pulse of cavernous bass stabs and slick hi-hats are inundated by massive swathes of soaring chords as the track progresses, with the requisite breakdowns augmented by choral vocal refrains. Totally euphoric in its intentions and execution, this is bound to have devastating effects when implemented at the right time.

Review: NTThis EP on Milan-based label Stolen Goods is a great example of how house music can be both smooth and danceable at the same time. 'High Cutz Vol. III' is a solid EP that showcases the deep house talents of Italian producers Black Loops and Innocent Soul. The two original tracks 'Belive in U' and 'Destiny' are both bouncy and groovy, with catchy vocal samples and jazzy chords. The Pasta Boys remix of the latter adds a bit more energy and funk to the mix, while keeping the soulful vibe of the original.

Review: Although their collaborative releases as Black Spuma are more sporadic than we may like, Fabrizio Mammarella and Phillip Lauer never fail to deliver the goods on the rare occasions that they get together in the studio. The Hypercall EP is their first joint effort for two years and sees them pitch up on Live at Robert Johnson for the first time following a series of inspired outings on International Feel and Futureboogie Recordings. Review: This surprise new EP finds celebrated music writer and producer Blackdown on the same EP as Burial for the first time since the latter remixed the former 15 years ago. There is a heavy Detroit influence in the far-sighted synths of 'This Journey' (VIP), with angsty vocal samples stitched into the bristling, swinging rhythm. Burial's 'Dark Gethsemane' bares all the producer's usual hallmarks - pitched up vocals, deft samples and a catchy 2-step shuffle. Blackdown then offers up a remix filled with chattery claps and UK funky rhythms to open the B-side, while Burial's 'Space Cadet' is another 2-step classic with its heady way up in the heavens.

Review: We have been really liking what we've heard from the Dolphin label out if the US of late. Now we get a taster of an upcoming album from Blaque Dynamite with a second single from it. Beka Gochiashvili features on keyboards and synthesizers throughout the cut. The Stefan Ringer remix is a wet and funky mix of jazz, house and experimental sound. It has a sleazy sense of vocal naughtiness to it with shuffling broken beats and rich layers of percussion. The original is an organic and loose-limbed deep house vibe and Ben Hixon brings a little more edgy tech to the drums.

Review: The first part of a two-part release for Sushitech's sub label Pariter, with Chicago second generation house hero Boo Williams joining the likes of Delano Smith and Norm Talley on the roster for 'Night Fall', the partner 12" to the simultaneously released 'Day Rise'. It features three tracks, all of which fit the mold of early evening classics. 'Acid Matrix' has an early Detroit feel to its raw machine handclap snares and panther-like, stalking bassline, while 'Deep Tech' might be geographically closer to late 80s, early 90s Yorkshire, a compulsive funkiness emerging from its bleepcentric soundscape. 'Service Chamber' is sleeker and more mellow, telephone dial tones spiralling off into the ether while tinkling, xylophone-sounded keys play hypnotically. Choice, quality material that will help any DJ to subtly pick the pace up as the sun falls.

'Day Rise' is definitely more upbeat of the two but it's a subtle distinction - it's certainly not full of 4AM bangers designed to keep you awake until the busses start running again. 'Talley Up' is a very straight forward affair, circling around a two note synth riff and gradually building percussion. 'The Take Over' is similarly spritely, another builder with crashing cymbals, jazzy chords and drum machine tumbles steadily building an insurmountable wall of funkiness. Breezy, bumping closer 'Teleport' completes the set, meaning three ultra-handy, raw but sophisticated tunes that house and techno DJs alike will find slipping into their sets with a natural ease.

Review: Despite a sizable, high-quality discography that stretches back to 1994, Boo Williams has never been as hyped or celebrated as many of his Chicago deep house peers. Perhaps it's time we gave him some love because the Natural Service EP - his first solo 12" on Chiwax since 2014 - is undeniably excellent. Check first opener 'Ambushed', where twinkling electronics and sumptuous pads ride jackin' drums and a brilliant bassline, before turning your attention to 'Echoes of the Dance', an acid-flecked journey through dreamy, loved-up deep house that's as picturesque as they come. Flipside 'Zone' is even more hypnotic and trance-inducing, sitting somewhere between classic deep house and the techier end of Omar-S's output.

Review: Boo Williams is considered a 'second generation' house musician from Chicago, one of few who followed in the footsteps of the likes of Larry Heard and Lil Louis - it's as though house music were some kind of Socratic tradition. Whatever the case, his distinctive visage forms the branding basis for his own label Boo Moonman, which has been going for ages. The boss has been busy putting together a trio of new EPs for the first half of 2023 that showcases a wealth of Mid-West talent. House hero Boo Williams kicks off this one with his typically tight drum programming and party-starting synth work on 'Tickin Clock.' Eric Johnson keeps it raw, deep and loopy on 'Melodic Gruv' then Reggie Dokes brings his signature Atlanta house sound to 'Mother's Child' with its melancholic lead sax and 'End of Time' is a broken beat bliss out.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Admirably no-nonsense house duo Dungeon Meat kick off a new label here, Slabs, which aims to serve up only the chunkiest hulks of wax aimed squarely at the club. Borren takes charge of the first platter and is the latest fast-rising talent to emerge from the ever-fertile Dutch scene. He has come up on a diet of Bret and Slapfunk parties and that shows in the tunes he presents here. 'Up Next' is heavy but silky, with gliding grooves and splashy cymbals next to cut-up vocals that will amp up any party. 'Beat My Shit' is another no-frills hardcore house assault with drums that have just the right amount of swing under old school chords and busy melodies that never rest. A fine first release.

Review: Prognose has sniffed out another collection of retro-future minimal tech house gems here with four artists offering up one track each for this third new outing. Boss Priester's 'Let The Kids Play' is a nice loopy opener with smooth drums and cool synths that have hints of cosmic magic. Jesse Jacob gets more unsigned with the surging 90s bassline and groggy chords of 'Time To Undust This Machine' then Garouda's' 'All The People' has a bit of a garage shuffle as it hurries on through the stars. Distilled Noise' 'Agape' does some freaky things with filtered vocals and skittish percussion.

Review: Archeo Recordings bring us some more Balearic Italian treasure here with some gold initially recorded in Bologna almost two decades ago. It's a collaboration between friends Bottin and Lucio Dalla that has never before been on vinyl. 'Lunedi Cinema' was an ident that played before Monday night movies on of one of the main Italian TV channels for many years. This electronic version includes the Martedi Mix from 2008, a Minibar Bonus Track and also a mix by pioneering Italian dream house dons Leo Mas & Fabrice with a Bottin dub sealing the deal. It's a superb package of real Italo music history.

Review: Reflections Of Yesterday is a new label 'with an eye on the future and a subtle nod to the past.' For its inaugural release, they have tapped two current heroes of the techno scene to present on each side of Reflection 1. Leeds' Al Bradley of 3AM Recordings is in fine form here, with the deep, down and dirty afterhours bounce of 'Pale Blue Dot' followed by the old school acid house swagger of 'In Flagrente Delicto'. On the flip are two more tracks, this time by Mancunian Scott Hallam of Axia Records who presents another serving of irresistible 303 wiggle on the glorious 'Kettle Crusader' followed by the high tech soul of 'Modern Senses' and its respectful nod to The Motor City.

Review: Atlanta's Chris Brann has always been most readily associated with his trailblazing work in Wamdue Kids, but he's always done much more besides. As a solo artist he first struck out in the mid-late 90s on the likes of Peacefrog, Acacia and Guidance, which tells you plenty about the quality of deep house he's responsible for. Studies In Form originally hails from that period, out in 1997 on Woody McBride's Sensuist label. These tracks sound evergreen, steeped in the warm musicality of the era, with plenty of oomph to get a floor moving but ultimately loungey in their demeanour. This is grade A classic US deep house from a seasoned pro, now lovingly reissued for your pleasure.

This one assembles a series of interesting artists starting with Marc Brauner & Luca Olivotto's far sighted deep house dreamer 'Hallo Hallo'. In solo mode, Brauner offers more uplifting house with a great r&b voice sample and Olivotto pumps the party with the US garage of 'Love Moves'. The flip side keeps the good times flowing with vocal house from David Silver, a deep and bubbly groove cruise from Nephews and more raw jam from DJ Merci.

Review: Despite presumably being insanely busy A&Ring for all his many labels, which put out music at a high rate of release, Burnski does also still find time to make his own music. And it's top tackle too, whatever he tries, from garage to ambient. To kick off with here the Northern rock cooks up a super breezy and Balearic-tinged house tune that you can imagine playing at some vibey Ibiza sunset party. That's probably why he called it 'Summer 23' to be honest. On the flip, 'Afters' gets more chunky and tribal, with tight and pinging drums and that sort of wide-eyed, tongues-out energy that gets the freaks going.
