Review: Mojuba is a real stamp of quality when it comes to more traditional house sounds with a heavy US bent. This new EP is another standout in that mood with Chicago original Bernard Badie behind the beats. It's a fiery one to start thanks tot he yelping female vocals that busy out of the mid tempo house drums. After that party-starting opening gambit comes the more wonky 'Bounce' with its tanging sound effects and taught bass. 'This Track' explores a slightly garage-tinged sound with scraping hits and swinging drums and last of all is 'Open Up' which is a heads down gem for the afters.

Review: Is there a more fun and hard-to-pin-down label than Studio Barnhus? The plaything of Swedish artists Kornel Kovacs, Axel Boman and their mate Petter Nordkvist it has done it all from trancehall to bubblegum house via pop edits and plenty in between. Now they look to Stockholm boys Ari Bald & CJ Scott once more for a new EP that bangs hard and has a great sense of character, much like their label debut here last year. Review: Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' has thus far been less recognised as an original soul wonderwork, and more so as a sample by American rapper Coolio on the derivative 'Gangster's Paradise'. Though still having been covered by many artists over the years, Major Keys records highlights this enduring 1981 cover of Wonder's 'Paradise' by Latin percussionist Ray Barretto as among their favourites, if not their absolute favourite. Now the label reissue the gem, flaunting its up-to-date, nigh timeless feel; it's the opposite of a miracle that this has never before been released on a 12" single record, despite the fact that it is a favourite on the floors of jazz and soul rooms the world over. It also flips it with Barretto's own 'La Cuna' and 'Mambotango', taken from the same 1981 LP.

2022's stunning album Once Twice Melody was a fine example of Beach House doing what they do best - living bang up to that name, with intimate-but epic instrumentation falling somewhere between surf-y jangle and grand shoegaze. 'Become' is definitely on a similar tip, and as such feels much like an extension of the long form.
Dig a little deeper, though, and scratches begin to show. While the full-length record represented Beach House reaching for the stars, or at least the moon, and stepping into the role of festival headliners, here the sense of pure confidence and occasion is less pronounced. That may not be a bad thing, mind, because while Once came across like a finished article, refined and prepared, things here seem somehow rawer, as though we're sitting in on a session as oppose to getting the signed off product.

Review: Scottish party starter Sally C is behind the bolshy brilliance of the Big Saldo's Chunkers label. So far the releases have come at a steady rate but have always been of utmost quality. Bella takes care of the label's fourth outing and it's another peak time outing full of big fun. 'Note To Self' is a mix of potent breaks, trance chords and rave energy where 'Orchestra Spring' is more direct and bouncy with a rugged bassline pumping the breaks and 'Odd Symphony' then slips into a deeper vibe still but one that is no less dynamic. An Olsvanger remix of the same tune takes it into mind-melting late night afterparty territory.

Review: The mysterious and unknown Betdat's first EP has landed on the amazing techno and electro label Frustrated Funk, with 'Supercell' showcasing some of the most futuristic electro cuts laid to wax. The sound in 'EF5' is mechanical, robot-like, and downright brutal and unforgiving, while on the second side, 'Vortex2' mixes some dubby elements into the equation to makeup a more raw and grainy sound. 'Honeymoon Phase' rounds out the EP with a much warmer and sensual sounding space-age robot love song. This record has something for every electro fan to love.

His 'Take Me There' is first up in remix form and Carl Cox flips it into a surging peak time roller. Review: Raton has grown to be a quite an integral part of Drumcode as well as the underground at large and now after previously working on the likes of Ellum Audio he finds himself in the studio with techno bigwig, Adam Beyer. The pair cook up two versions of the same cut here. 'The Signal' (Night mix) is a dramatic cut with an epic baseline and space-age synth craft over chunky drums that are constantly on the rise. 'The Signal' (Day mix) is a much more melodic and light cut but has just as much low-end heft. Both of these tunes give you an insight into how big name DJs like this see techno working in different settings.

Review: With over 50 years of experience dating way back to the early 70s with the progressive outfit Zebra, Joan has left quite a discography that is still being discovered and enjoyed. This EP - Joan Bibloni's second appearance on the label in total - features three versions of 'Badia Onirica', two of them being language versions and then the instrumental. Overall, the song is a track fitting for the Cafe Del Mar sound - a mix of folk, electronica, house with a Latin and folk influence and versions in Spanish and Catalan. Review: Techno scene stalwart Steve O'Sullivan has long dabbled in dub techno, usually under the Blue Train alias. Now he has a new dubbed-out alias, Blue Channel, a moniker that doffs a hat to German dub techno greats Basic Channel/Rhythm & Sound. This is the first volume in a multi-part EP series that sets out O'Sullivan's soulful, hazy and sub-heavy agenda. 'Dubplate Vibing' itself (side A) sits somewhere between purist vocal dub, pitched-down steppers and the epic, locked-in rhythmic sound worlds of purist dub techno. He ups the tempo and sticks to more authentic dub techno territory on the brilliant (and very Basic Channel-esque) 'Complete With U', before opting for a more minimalistic traditional digi-dub sound of 'Keep Tryin Dub'.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan recently launched the Blue Channel project as a kind of sonic companion to his similarly minded dub techno work as Blue Train, in the process paying tribute to Berlin's masters of the extended dubbed-out groove, Basic Channel. This is the second EP in an ongoing series and begins with a fresh 'Bluetrain Special Edition Dub' of 'Complete With U', a track featured (in its original mix form) on the previous EP. This take is more percussively propulsive and addictive - thanks to a locked-in dub house style groove - with warmer synth sounds and echoing vocalisations. It's basically a hat-tip to classic Rhythm & Sound singles of old, albeit with drums that more neatly fit into a wider variety of DJ sets. Over on side B, 'Traveller' is a fine slab of pitched-down vocal digi-dub with added ambient dub sonics.

Review: Get your stomping boots on for this new pink 12" from the Revival crew out of New York. Bodeler and Manu Desrets link up for some heavy, straight-up tech that lands hard but with funk. 'Impact' makes just that with its crisp snare hats and thudding kicks all underpinned by a loopy bassline. Some trips out synths break out like fireworks at the midpoint before the tough, stiff, brilliant beats return. EPAU Sepp X Nu Zau remix with a more loose and fluid and freewheeling vibe - claps spin out, basslines bobble and freaky vocals all burst out of the mix. A killer two-tracker, frankly.

His sound is right at home in the modern electro zeitgeist, and so he throws down the lean and mean 'Take My Beat' as a demonstration of how machine funk needn't be overflowing with complex details. Sometimes, raw, nasty approaches are the most effective. To offer a contrasting perspective, Gravitational steps up for a remix of the track on the B-side which layers the foundations up with some crisp details which do the original material a fine service while offering a different perspective.

This ninth outing is no less desirable, coming from the in house production team in collaboration with Breakfake. 'Life In Stereo' hits a perfect note between kinetic drums and soulful, jazzy chords deigned to melt the heart. 'Rat City' is more filthy - a warped bassline screws about beneath more sleazy broken beats. Review: Casino Classix is one of several aliases for legendary minimal man Baby Ford. Here it is also the name of a four-track EP that finds the long time UK underground operative working alongside fellow British techno luminary Mark Broom on a quartet of devastating cuts. 'Ringer' opens up with some dark and nimble baselines darting about beneath a dense layer of percussion and FX. 'Hoppa' is then a more precise and minimalist cut with wonky bass snaking down low beneath the icy hi-hats and jumbled toms. There is a warm dub depth to 'Hot Pot' to kick off the flip and 'Beach Club' shuts down with a restless mix of synth daubs and deft percussion over an ice cold groove.

Review: Jesse Bru lays down the first in his 'Chronicles Of Bru' series, which narrates the comical tale of an ambitious young man whose sole goal is to save the planet from the false excesses of climate catastrophe and environmental decay. Somehow, this vision of sonic ecology translates to deep, ambient trance and piano house, which is funnelled stylistically into five new heaters for France's Happiness Therapy label. Faint birdsong and overblown Chicago-esque motifs are laid down in a quickly successive, through-composed fashion, as if to suggest that the political project that ignites change should be one of musical, harmonious enjoyment, not of stingy utility, where house music cannot be heard.

Review: Steve Bug is going on 30+ years of writing electronic music and travelling the world as a top DJ with no signs of letting up. It Just Happened is his latest and finds its way to the legendary and iconic Nu Groove records. It must be daunting to release music on such an amazing label. 'It Just Happened' has all the makings of a classic worthy enough for the Nu Groove logo. Veteran Cle who has worked on many projects with Steve is featured here as well. For those that really know Steve Bug's background, they know he is equally involved in house music as he is with techno. Tracks like 'Crew Thing' show his ability to make a standout house track while 'House Music Transcends' closes things out with your hands in the air. We respect Steve Bug so much for his work over the years. When he is old skool mode like he is on this EP, you just have to say respect to the man. Respect!

Review: Bobby Byrd comes strutting on posthumously through to Sedsoulsociety with 'Never Get Enough'. This ineluctable treat was first released on Brownstone Recordings sometime during the early 70s funk heyday, and was produced and arranged by none other than that ingenious titan, James Brown, together with the beautiful 'My Concerto'. We usually wouldn't forgive the removal of the latter track from any reissue, but we're making an exception here, for the fact that an even greater treat lines this B-side reissue: a formerly unreleased instrumental of said James Brown classic production. Funk completists hardly need to be told not to sleep on this one.
