Review: Amnesia Scanner, the duo made up of Martti Kalliala and Ville Haimala, have quickly established themselves as important artists operating in the field of experimental electronic music, with a distinct focus towards noise, sound collage and abrasive synthesis. After last year's "Another Life", they return to Pan in collaboration with label boss Bill Kouligas, resulting in the startling, challenging and compelling "Lexachast". It's an album that veers in mood from track to track - at times intimate and furtive, other times bold and aggressive. There are whispers of beats thrown tauntingly to the edge of the mix, while elsewhere acoustic sound sources strain to be heard, but the focus is really on jagged shards of processed sound. It's a powerful, unapologetic listen from artists and a label proudly stabbing into unknown sonic territory.

Review: It's taken Baba Stiltz a while to settle on a sound of his own. While his early material - released as far back as 2011 - stuck rigidly to skwee and hip-hop influenced downtempo grooves, latter projects for Studio Barnhus have seen him head in a much more immersive deep house direction. This imaginative and eccentric debut album, presented as a doublepack with full artwork, stitches together these disparate strands. The results are impressive, with vibrant, Balearic-influenced deep house cuts nestling side by side with robust acid jams, scratchy downtempo grooves, grandiose synthesizer soundscapes and skewed instrumental pop. It's an assured and curiously off-kilter debut, which should appeal to those who enjoy more leftfield strains of deep house.

Review: German funkateer Bjorn Wagner launched the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band in 2007 following months spent learning to play steel drums during an extended stay in Trinidad and Tobago. 11 years on, Wagner and his trusty backing band return with album number two, "The Serpent's Mouth". As usual, the set sees them gleefully combine killer grooves - a mix-and-match fusion of funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz-funk - with a hint of humid tropical music and the distinctive melodies of oil barrel steel drums. There are, of course, nods to reggae and calypso (see "Real Hot") and a few eyebrow-raising cover versions, of which their rendition of Jan Hammer's "Crockett's Theme" from "Miami Vice" stands out.

Review: Before Twin Peaks and all that followed, director David Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti had worked together just once: on the former's 1986 mystery noir movie Blue Velvet. Lynch asked Badalamenti to create an original score inspired by both the works of Shostakovich and the smoky, clandestine atmosphere found at blues and jazz clubs. These two musical threads are explored on side A and B respectively. So, while the first side contains numerous sweeping, dark and moody orchestral compositions, turn the record over and you'll find classics from Roy Orbison and Bill Doggett, as well as Badalamenti's spine-tingling interpretation of pop standard "Blue Velvet". Featuring a mixture of simmering strings, breathy female vocals and atmospheric field recordings, it's as creepy a version of the much-covered song as you'll hear.

Review: Death Waltz has pulled of something of a coup here, obtaining permission to release Angelo Badalamenti's score from David Lynch's controversial Twin Peaks movie spin-off, Fire Walk With Me. The film was panned by both critics and fans of the original TV series on its 1992 release, but has since becoming something of a cult classic. Badalamenti's fine score is as atmospheric and beguiling as his work on the original Twin Peaks series, and contains a number of tracks that rework musical themes from that acclaimed production. Death Waltz has gone all out on the production, too, housing heavyweight, cherry-splattered vinyl in a luscious gatefold sleeve.

Review: As an ode to the upcoming remake of David Lynch's infamous Twin Peaks, there is a flurry of Angelo Badalamenti reissues at the moment. In fact, both this original soundtrack, which is the official music as heard in the 1992 film, and the Fire Walk With Me spin-off have both resurfaced as reissues this week. Unsurprisingly, we recommend for you to snap up both because they have been something of a rarity over the last 10 years. Timeless and iconic from start to finish, this soundtrack is not for the faint of heart, and will likely stir some feelings upon initial listen. This will be all the more palpable if you were shocked and eternally intrigued by the movie. We were, of course, and we absolutely cannot wait for the new series either!

Review: Soundtrack reissues specialists Death Waltz finally deliver what everyone has been waiting for; a newly remastered edition of Angelo Badalamenti's timeless score for Twin Peaks. A project that was first announced back in 2014, Death Waltz have really put the work in here on this double LP presentation. Seeking out engineer Tal Miller to remaster the score, getting the approval of David Lynch on the artwork, sleeve notes from Badalamenti and of course the music itself pressed up on "damn fine coffee" coloured vinyl. Musically speaking, do we really need to describe what is a classic selection of compositions from the American? Both the foreboding "Twin Peaks Theme" and somewhat more soothing "Laura Palmer's Theme" should be singed on the cerebral cortex of any self-respecting fan of culture.

Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

Review: Essential reissue alert: Arguably one of his most influential albums of his illustrious career, Wally's third album Echoes has matured incredibly well, joining the dots between electronica, island music, reggae, pop and ambient better than most self-styled Balearic DJs. Sampled by the likes Massive Attack ("Mambo") and Pete Herbert ("Chief Inspector"), we're moved through the moods in such a simplistic but warm, dynamic way as Wally switches from shedding a tear on the Scarface-era Moroder style "Canyons" to shedding a few pounds on the runaway boogie cut "Endless Race". Still sounding current 32 years deep, there's a reason the likes of Grace Jones, Level 42, Herbie Hancock and Black Uhuru worked with him.

Review: There are few certified music stars that France's Wally Badarou hasn't worked with along his illustrious career. Black Uhuru, Grace Jones and Herbie Hancock are just some of the names he's collaborated with, but the man only got to that stage thanks to his wonderful solo albums of the early '80s. His very first LP, the much-coveted Back To Scales To-Night, is a sublime boogie-soul gem and it's thanks to the collaboration between Expansion and Love Vinyl that we have it on our shelves once again. The title track is an instant hit of euphoria upon first listen, and its sonic treatment which rendered it stand-out back in the day... and still today! "One Day Won't Give It Away" is another favourite of ours, a drum-machine soul groover, but the instrumental version of "London Town" is also a reason to cop this magnetic, and refreshing soul album.

Consisting of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on drums, it's not hard to see why Badbadnotgood have been getting the usually hushed toned Gilles Peterson all exciting after a few listens of the nine tracks here. Review: Danish scene veteran and Music For Dreams overlord Kenneth Bager is undoubtedly one of the best Balearic DJs around. He has umpteen residencies on the White Isle, but it's his association with the beachside Jockey Club venue in Salinas that has become the most celebrated - thanks, in no small part, to his now annual, two-disc mix-ups. This year's edition - the sixth in total - is every bit as beguiling as its predecessors. It features a slowly shifting, soft-focus mixture of European new age favourites, sun-kissed jazz-pop, classic-sounding chill-out fare, slow motion disco, superb acoustic workouts, dub-wise electronica, contemporary dream house and spacey Balearic floor-fillers. Oh, and one of the tunes of 2018, Sophie Lloyd's gospel disco smasher "Calling Out".

In keeping with the original spirit, the full soul range is explored but done so with a much firmer focus on the dancefloor; ZouZouElectric's dubby house glimmers on "Tropicana Flight", Opolopo's sweet shuffled jack on "Dizzy's Bounce" and Suonho's sultry piano-primed disco are just three of the nine awesome sunkissed twists crammed onto the 180 gram vinyl. Perfectly timed for the summer, too...

Their legendary debut LP from 1974, under their own name, has become a Brazilian funk addict's must-have, not to mention a Holy Grail for contemporary sampling. Until now, it's been difficult to get a hold of it on viny format, so we're super psyched that the irresistibly reliable Far Out label has decided to reissue it. With 11 tracks to marvel at, there is a slice of funk for all walks of life and, of course, there is so much grooving to done! Review: One of Baker's most iconic, enduring albums enjoys a reissue. Written and recorded two years after his debut with Vido Musso and as many years before he hit Hollywood and heroin, Chet's debut album is laced with his lullaby dulcets and a sombre, spacious musicianship that creates a bubble that somehow sits both in and ahead of its time. Regarded as one of his most important pieces of work and accepted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2001, while it's clearly Chet at his youngest and purest, scratch the surface (both sonically and with the art of hindsight) and his barbed future is softly embedded in the album's DNA.

Review: Julien Baker's debut 'Sprained Ankle' garnered critical acclaim on its release last year for its impressive writing. Considering Baker's age, at only 22 years old she's already creating worlds of stunning dream-pop with a craftsmanship that could stir envy in more experienced songwriters. 'Turn Out The Lights' showcases her talent even further, exploring a melancholy world against a backdrop of sparse echoing instrumentation. The moments of subtle intensity are striking, such as the album's cinematic opening 'Over', whose stirring strings and sparse piano pour seamlessly into the next track 'Appointments. Baker's voice is controlled and her harmonies are arresting, and she uses expansive vocal layering to build intensity, pulling back just before it overbears the listener. This impressive second milestone in Baker's work is heartfelt, cathartic and more than impressive.

Review: Lewis' gentle and bewitching L'Amour, which came complete with a bizarre backstory involving the disappearance of the blonde-haired would-be-matinee-idol on its sleeve, was one of the surprise delights of the year. Yet the release of the hitherto unsuspected follow-up Romantic Times, which was originally recorded in 1985, only adds to the mystique surrounding this off-kilter auteur. The abstract croon and expressionistic mood may remain, yet the pastel shades and beachside calm of his earlier effort are gone, replaced by brooding atmosphere and vocals that betray a troubled soul beneath the luxurious veneer. Residing somewhere between lounge lizard thrills and outsider art chills, Romantic Times is a portrait of a true one-off.

Review: BeachFreaks Records co-founder Charles Bals is a man who knows about records - and obscure European ones at that. Club Meduse, his first compilation for Spacetalk (a label with a track record for producing these kinds of killer, crate-digging comps), is loosely designed as the soundtrack to life around a mythical (IE imaginary) Cote D'Azure resort. Musically, it gathers together the kind of hazy, soft-focus and life-affirming cuts that you would have heard at resort discos in the mid-to-late 1980s. Suffice to say that Bals' selections tend towards the rare, magical and undeniably Balearic, from the glassy-eyed, cascading jazz-funk of the Keyboys and loved-up post-boogie sweetness of Gemini's "Take a Chance", to the sparkling Euro-electro of Miss' "Hip Hop" and pitched-down drum machine chug of Gigi Flag's "Nymphomaniac (Instrumental)". Essential.

Review: 18 years and eight albums deep: Melbourne funkateers The Bamboos return with their latest long-one and it's a whole new blueprint. Seemingly broader and brighter in sound and energy, the development in sound reflects their move to bigger arenas with big vital poppy moments such as the triumphant opener "Lit Up" and the anthemic riff heavy "War Story". Elsewhere we're body slammed in northern soul stampedes such as "Salvage Rites", we get woozy with a little rock sleaze ("Pony Up") and breath-taking by raw soul authenticity ("You Should've Been Mine"). Here's to another 18 years and eight albums.

Their new LP, "Cease To Begin", is a strikingly beautiful record. It has honesty, sincerity and passion and proves to be truly inspiring.

Review: Southampton's own bones brigade, Band Of Skulls, return with an epic fifth studio album, delivering a sweet selection of alternative pop rock versatility. The album opens with a salvo of heavier, more motley rock sounds before hitting its catchy title track halfway through the A-side. "Not The Kind Of Nothing" and "Cool Your Battles" turns out the A-side from anything too soft, with the band serving up a cooing, more contemplative and ethereal number in "Sound of You" that opens the second disc. The slightest of country and folk inspirations waver in and out of "We're Alive", with the emotional wall of sound that is "Speed Of Light" a true highlight, alongside the jamming post-punk hit: "Gold". Review: Alex Banks has endured something of a stop-start career, first hitting record shelves in 2007 under the Munk 777 alias before finally returning - largely as a renowned DJ and remixer - a couple of years back. Here the Brighton producer finally fulfils his early promise with an excellent debut album for Modeselektor's Monkeytown Records. Illuminate sits somewhere between grandiose post-dubstep, sinewy string-laden deep house, jazz-flecked techno, murky glitch-hop and folksy electronica, with grandiose dancefloor moments (the gloriously rushing "Inititate") nestling side by side with woozier, more introspective pieces (the Bonobo-goes-electronic jazz of "Lights"). Immaculately produced and impressively atmospheric throughout, it's the sort of debut album that should propel Banks towards the upper echelons of electronic music.

  1. Caterina Barbieri - "Bestie Infinite" (15:10)
  2. Eleh - "Wear Patterns" (16:19)
Review: Important Records recently described this release as featuring "two sound poems". There's certainly something poetic about the fluid ebb and flow on both pieces, both of which were crafted with the use of analogue and modular synthesizers and tend towards the epic. On the A-side you'll find a new piece by Italian sound designer and composer Caterina Barbieri. "Bestie Infinite" somehow manages to be both mournful and strangely positive, with fluctuating modal melodies slowly emerging from the backbreaking weight of Barbieri's droning chords. Minimal analogue synthesis specialist ELEH handles side B, casting a spell via held church organ chords, off-key melodies and cascading electronics on stunning, 16-minute opus "Wear Patterns".

Review: With a great emphasis placed on presentation and artistic statement, Swiss label Les Points has already established itself as a serious operator within the bustling minimal house and techno scene. This split release from Barbir and Nicola Kazmir is yet further proof of the ambitious intentions the label has in delivering the most creatively inspired music possible, and there is certainly plenty of music to get your teeth into here. There's twitchy house constructions aplenty to enjoy from both artists, as well as some intriguing remixes of STL loops at the end of each side in a nod to the inspirational power of the German producer, whose own leftfield leanings fit into the lineage of this release.

Review: Alex Barnett and Faith Coloccia return to the dark, militant and disorderly outlet that is Blackest Ever Black for a second LP of twisted ambient-filtered noise infusions. Much like their previous album, Weld is inherently abstract but still manages to tell a story, taking the listener on a journey by using primitive forms of sound design. There are certainly more concrete pieces within, such as the kick-powered "Dreamsnake" or the hazy stoner jam that is "AM Horizon", but the release is largely freeform and loosely held together by fuzzy shreds of electronic fuzz. "Ash Grove" is a favourite of ours, its circling toms giving the track a sporadic backbone. It's a beaut, as per usual.

The International Fell boss described the musical outcome as a techno album of sorts, with influences harking back to the days of Warp's Artificial Intelligence compilations or SSR's Freezone series (as heard on the zeitgeist of '90s IDM like "TRIX/Ichimoku"), chill out ("Donchian Reprise") and Detroit's mellower moments like on the evocative "Point & Figure".

Review: It's been a long time coming, but Julio Bashmore's debut album, Knockin' Boots, is finally here. With releases on Dirtybird, Futureboogie, and mixes for Mixmag and FM radio, the hat loving Bristol producer has come a long way throughout the last five years. Knockin' Boots is a ten-track blend of soulful house and minimal-edged bass music, with the title track itself being something of a Chicago stomper. There's plenty of sublime sampling within Bashmore's house servings, such as on the excellent and discofied "Hold On" featuring Sam Dew, "What's Mine Is Mine", and the juke-inspired "Bark". The LP also verges on the pop end of things with tunes like "For Your Love" or "Rhythm Of Auld", and it's simply a pleasure to play from beginning to end. Bashmore coming through diverse and explosive, as per usual. Ya need.

Oats sees him arrive on Alter, the label run by Luke 'Helm' Younger. Oats is an LP which more than fits in with the dark, subdued and grainy aesthetic Younger has been developing over the past few years, with the scuffed kicks, haunting tones and sluggish percussion of tracks like "AR II" and "Child Confession" and the paranoid musique concrete of "Interiors" and "Eat Oan" marking out Bishop as someone whose musical vision seems to be maturing with experience.

Review: The latest full-length excursion from William Basinski has its roots in a 2017 Berlin exhibition that the long-serving experimental composer was invited to contribute to. Basinski created music for two installations, making extensive use of recordings of two distant black holes captured using the interferometers of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). Of the two tracks on show, it's the epic title track that hits home hardest. It's a 40 minute ambient epic of intergalactic proportions, with Basinski offering up slowly-shifting, ice cold chords, crackling aural textures and occasional bursts of distant activity. The track that follows is a little warmer and undeniably drowsy, with Basinski utilizing manipulated neo-classical movements to create an intoxicating ambient mood.

  1. A Shadow In Time (16:40)

Review: Although William Basinski's work is often tagged as 'neo-classical', the veteran producer is very much an electronic musician. His craft does involve plenty of deep instrumentation and symphonious arrangements, but he's been experimenting with tape loops and reel-to-reels for over three decades. A Shadow In Time is his new EP for his own 2062 imprint, run alongside James Elaine, and it's every bit as glorious as the rest of 2062's glorious catalogue. "For David Robert Jones" is the opening slice of glorious sonority, a wondrous loops of aqueous sounds with free-roaming jazz instruments balancing in mid-air, and a mysterious charm to its hazy smoke of sounds. The title track "A Shadow in Time" is a sparser, less imperceptible slice of ambient textures that slowly builds into a vast, fiery soundscape of aural delight. A beautiful sonic massage.

Review: Soundway fans should be more than familiar with Pedro Coquenao's Batida project, with the Lisbon-based Kuduro fusionist dropping a killer self-titled LP on the label in 2012. Supplemented by several 12" releases, this has laid down the groundwork of a relationship between Coquenao and Soundway which was always likely to result in further releases, such as the album. Dois is a fourth Batida LP overall and find Coquenao at his most confident, retaining the feel of previous albums but widening the stylistic remit, working with guests and utilising more live instrumentation. Afro house, benga, semba are thrown into the mix along with Kuduro, whilst Coquenao slips in the odd Clash sample as well as referencing his heritage with Angolan movies and afro-beat tracks plundered for usage.

Review: For the 42nd stop on the decades-long journey through worldwide DJ culture, Global Underground has pitched up in Berlin and handed over the reins to Patrice Baumel, a Dutch DJ/producer with an impressive track record. The resultant two-disc mix-up is staggeringly good, with Baumel choosing to represent a wide variety of techno and tech-house sounds with occasional diversions into more melodious or off-kilter fare. Wisely, the Dutchman has also chosen to offer up tracks that span the decades, contrasting classic material from the likes of Swayzak, Matthew Dear and Chateau Flight (whose brilliant "Cosmic Race" stands out) with newer cuts from such artists as Shlomo, Steve Moore, Adam Port, Ripperton and the ageless Phil Kieran.

Review: Joe Claussell's Sacred Rhythm Music is back to present new music under his alias The Bayara Citizens. Elektrik Afrika is his second full length of the project, where he pursues yet more of his idiosyncratic style of 'spiritual life music'. By fusing acoustic and electronic together as one, the project represents evolution - producing its own genetics and speaking an individual dialect of rhythm and sound. Traces can be heard in "Zainabu" (Spirit Dancer) which fuses electronic harmonizing on the skins of traditional folkloric rhythms, or the soul power of "Mofo Congoietric" (Joaquin's Sacred Rhythm version), through to the tunnelling and hypnotic power of "Bambara" (The Tribes Of Distortion dub) and the truly life-affirming "Diamonds" (It's Time To Let Our People Go).

Review: Five years have passed since Andrew Bayer made a big impression with his silky second album, "If I Were You, I'd Never Leave". While informed by his progressive house and Washington D.C techno roots, it was a largely downtempo and laidback affair that suited sofa-bound listening sessions more than sweaty club sets. This belated follow-up takes a similarly head-in-the-clouds approach, serving up a sensual selection of sweet songs that variously touch on Balearic two-step (the glistening "Open End Resource"), post-dubstep pop ("Hold On To You", the deliciously bass-heavy "Immortal Lover"), sweeping, hands-aloft trip-hop anthems ("Love You More") and melodius, radio-friendly dancefloor workouts ("Your Eyes", "End Of All Things").

Review: Melbourne imprint A Colorful Storm here compile a collection of obscure indie pop gems, mainly from the Australian band the Cat's Miaow and their associated projects. Formed in 1992, the quartet was comprised of members of 'the incestuous Melbourne music scene' - vocalist Kerrie Bolton (formerly of the Beat Poets and Tra La La), guitarist Bart Cummings (from Blairmailer and Girl of the World), bassist Andrew Withycombe (also of Blairmailer, as well as the Ampersands) and drummer Cameron Smith (ex-Girl of the World). Over the years, the band issued a series of cassettes recorded on four-track with local indie label Toytown. Featured here are works by the band and their various side projects, not limited to their experimental offshoot Hydroplane, Bart & Friends and The Shapiros. Also included are tracks by now defunct Sydney outfits Even As We Speak (who recently reformed for a release on Emotional Response) and Pearly Gatecrashers.

Review: In the aftermath of the Brexit vote the question on many people's minds is 'what's going to happen'...well an answer for some, at least, was a new BC Camplight album, fittingly named, Deportation Blues. Recording in Liverpool's Whitewood studios, Brian Christinzio is said to have locked himself in a windowless studio and recorded all songs almost exclusively in the dark. With title track Deportation Blues its most illuminating result, the album overall is a more electrified opus, musically speaking, than his previous long players How To Die In The North and Blink Of A Nihilist. Featuring Luke Barton on guitars and synth, alongside guitarist Tom Rothery and multi-instrumentalist/ backing singer Ali Bell, BC Camplight lights it up again.

Review: When it comes to sunny, summer-fresh drum and bass, few producers are quite as capable as Spearhead Records supremo Steve "BCee" Jefroy. Further proof of his mastery of soulful-but-punchy D&B comes courtesy of Jefroy's fifth solo full-length, "Shouting About Nothing". Highlights come thick and fast, from the gentle pianos, rolling breaks and stunning vocals of "Sincerely Yours (feat. Leo Wood)" and the weighty low-end rumble of "All Fired Up", to the ruffneck early jungle/vintage D&B fusion of "For All Your Worth", cinematic drum and bass soul of "Wanderer" and the dub-wise, hot-stepping dancefloor skank of the title track "Shouting About Nothing".

Review: With new album Emakhosini, BCUC take the listener on an epic journey, sharing their controversial yet interesting views on modern Africa. The band hail from Soweto and draw inspiration from indigenous music that is not exposed in the mainstream, aiming for a timeless, honest and traditional/ritualistic sound. Their firm belief is that music should always resonate with the spirituality, history and future of the people. Recorded at Back To Mono studios (Lyon, France) in the summer of 2017, the music derives from a blend of genres across the ages and draws inspiration from indigenous music that is not exposed in the mainstream. 'Africangungungu' as they call it, is the name of their brand of afro-psychedelic style of music. These three compositions are sung in Zulu, Sotho and English with their funky modulations that extend over twenty minutes, in a whirlwind of sound reminiscent of Fela's Afrobeat.

Review: Over the past few years, Be Svendsen's releases have showcased his growing maturity as a producer, with the straight-up club fare of old replaced by a range of far more intriguing and musically complex cuts. There are further signs of maturation on this long awaited debut album, which cheerfully shuffles between melodious, mid-tempo Balearic deep house ("Falling"), jazzy and folksy soundscapes (the brilliant title track), dub disco-influenced wonky synth-pop ("Drop The Gun"), Italo-disco revivalism ("Andromeda"), blissful ambient business (the delightful "Moments"), cosmic rock ("Hazy Eyes") and dewy-eyed vocal numbers ("October Letters"). In other words, he's finally delivered the album he's been capable of for some time.

Review: Anyone who fell in love first with this dreampop duo following the twilit strains of their Sub Pop debut 'Teen Dream' - all languorous summer haze and melodious abandon - will certainly not be disappointed by 'Depression Cherry', despite its slightly daunting title. Yet longtime fans of Beach House - the band who're in many ways the spiritual torchbearers of the ethereal sound of 4AD and particularly Cocteau Twins - will find strange new depths and substance in this fifth platter, being a still more plaintive and minimal take on their trademark aural spell, stripped down to create a wash of sound as emotionally charged as it is blissfully beguiling.
