Country Creatures (remixes) (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: 695808 9146. Rel: 04 Nov 19
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Fever Ray - "This Country Makes It Hard To Fuck" (Björk remix) (3:03)
  2. Bjork - "Features Creatures" (Fever Ray remix) (4:10)
  3. Bjork - "Features Creatures" (The Knife remix) (4:38)
Review: A fierce meeting of minds you may never have expected, but that makes total sense - the mighty Bjork crossing swords with Fever Ray in an exchange of remixes with blistering results. Iceland's foremost musical visionary is in full warrior mode as she tackles Fever Ray's "This Country Makes It Hard To Fuck", delivering a nightmarish techno jackhammer full of monolithic kicks and sheet metal scrapings. Then Bjork's "Features Creatures" gets two versions from Karin Dreijer - first the Fever Ray remix that pumps and locks in an otherworldly mechanism that wouldn't sound out of place on one of Bjork's Mark Bell-produced albums. Then comes a sprightly version from Dreijer's other project, The Knife, which bounds along at an urgent pace with a skippy rhythm section and plenty of hyphy synth vamps.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Peggi Blu - "I Want It All Now" (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (6:59)
  2. Gregg Diamond - "This Side Of Midnight" (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (6:58)
Review: Celebrating 10 years since his seminal mix "Try To Find Me Vol 2" dropped and turned diggers and editors green with envy (before causing en-mass search and ID-request for all his obscurities), My Rules boss Justin Van Der Volgen has decided to unleash two of his special edits for a very limited time. Peggi Blu's "I Want It All Now" pops and tickles with its juicy slap bass before she takes the lead and sets fire to the mic with her smouldering vocals. On the B we find an edit of "This Side Of Midnight" where Gregg Diamond's vocals are brought right to the front of the mix and the disco feels are so strong you can tangibly feel them. Catch this is you can.

Review: Since signing to Studio Barnhus last year, Bella Boo (real name Gabriella Borbely) has delivered a handful of quirky EPs, but nothing quite as impressive as this brilliant debut album. It's rooted in her own skewed take on house - a constant theme amongst Studio Barnhus artists - but draws on a myriad of influences and impressively dashes off in different directions. There's the lightly Afro-tinged vocal deep house pulse of "Can't Leave You Like This", the bustling, loose-limbed "She's Back!", the downtempo nu-jazz of "Tuesday", the squelchy 21st century hip-house of "Hotel Europa" and the ambient bliss of "Stars"- and that's before we get to the jazzy, acid-fired wonder that is Axel Boman hook-up "Do The Right Thing".

  7. What Is She Wearing (6:35)
Review: Mystifying, beguiling, innovative, daring, bizarre and occupying some musical hinterland between genius and madness. Needless to say, the collaborative efforts of Cate Le Bon and Bradford Cox sit in highly esteemed company, with many of the greatest works in sonic history equal parts lunacy and intellectually astounding. Trying to put a label on "Myths 004" isn't easy. There are shades of both parties audible across all seven tracks, and yet what's here is entirely unique to their shared vision. The discordance and everyday spoken word commentary of "What Is She Wearing", "Fireman"'s playful, trippy, childlike lyrics and instrumentation combined with an unsettling overdubbed voice, the sublime wordless hypnosis of electronic head-nodder "Constance". Every bit the sum of its ever-impressive individual parts, if evidence were needed that Le Bon and the man behind Deerhunter were priceless artistes then this is it.
