Tried (feat Little Dragon) (3:33)
Tried (instrumental) (3:32)
Review: Despite not releasing all that much in 2018, Canadian nu-jazz combo BADBADNOTGOOD's reputation continued to rise. That was in no small part due to their eye-catching collaboration with Little Dragon, which resulted in the digital release of "Tried" back in September. Now the track has been given a deserved seven-inch single release by Ninja Tune. With LD lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano doing her best to channel the spirit of Minnie Riperton, "Tried" has a similarly languid, jazz/folk/soul fusion feel as some of the best works by Rotary Connection. BADBADNOTGOOD's admiration of the Charles Stepney-produced band comes through loud and clear through the choice of instruments and arrangements. For further proof, check the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

Review: Steve Spacek continues to surge towards the very forefront of soulful electronica with this super-limited hand-stamped 12" under the new Beat Spacek guise. Blessed with his trademark dreamy falsetto, driven by sweet stumbling beats and coated in enveloping warm bass, it's already been a big hit with the likes of Mark Pritchard, Gilles Peterson and Benji B. With the promise of a whole album's worth of material, Steve Spacek's new project has plenty to get us excited about. And it starts here.

I Wanna Know (Seven Davis Jr Midnight remix) (5:09)
I Wanna Know (dBridge remix) (3:22)
I Want You (Animal Collective remix) (3:03)
Review: Back in January, Steve Spacek scored one of this year's most unique long players with the Beat Spacek album Modern Streets which was crafted using only iOS apps. Yes, a very modern concept, but Spacek's mastery of his art ensured this was no gimmick but a fine addition to his storied discography. Before Ninja Tune sign off for the year, the label have issued this 12" featuring a diverse cast of contributing remixers moulding the LP opener "I Wanna Know" in their own vision. Up top, Seven Davis Jr rewires the track into a sublime house groover far removed from the sub heavy drama of the original track. It's a family affair on the flip with Spacek's brother D-Bridge turning in a wonderfully funked out take, whilst Animal Collective's Deakin takes the track down a whole weirder path.

Review: Belfast boys Bicep have been surprisingly quiet of late, with this single-sided salvo marking their first new music since 2018. Apparently inspired by their globe-trotting DJ experiences of the past couple of years, the track is as vibrant, colourful and emotive as you'd expect, with the Northern Irish duo layering glistening, ear-catching synthesizer lead lines, drifting vocal samples, sunrise-ready pads and tweaked electronics atop a loose-limbed, breakbeat-influenced rhythm and rumbling bass. It's perhaps not as in-your-face as some of their releases, but it certainly boasts great dancefloor weight, as well as a blend of musical elements that tends towards the loved-up and glassy-eyed.

Aura (12" mix) (7:25)
Review: Since announcing their debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune earlier this year, Irish duo Bicep present the first single from the album in the form of title track "Aura". Said to have been created via a series of accidents while experimenting with a new studio setup, the track finally came together through trial and error and here is the wonderful result. A dark and sexy serving of dancefloor drama featuring 'hands in the air' style vintage synth melodies, life affirming strings and immaculate drum programming. It is sure to be one of 'those' tracks you're going to be hearing a lot of in the latter part of 2017 and beyond.

Review: Ben Bohmer recorded this new single on Ninja Tune live at Brooklyn Mirage on October 6th 2023. It comes as a limited edition and hand-numbered 180-gram vinyl 12" with an extended and alternate mix. Both feature Felix Raphael and both have a subtly uplifting prog-house effect that unfolds slowly over the rich, silvery drums and deft synth drones that are all constantly on the rise. The vocals are spine-tinging, soft and tender whispers that help make this a most angelic of sounds.

Return To Air
Review: Undoubtedly the most popular artist on the ever increasing Ninja Tune roster, it's always great to see some new material from the studio of Si 'Bonobo' Green, especially as he's spent the best part of two years touring his fifth studio LP. "Flashlight" is sadly not a cover of the Funkadelic classic of the same name, but it does demonstrate Bonobo at the top of his powers, weaving together an intoxicating melange of garage-brushed rhythms, ocean deep basslines, cooing vocals and compulsive textures. It's complemented by two tracks that draw Bonobo closer to the dancefloor; the playful, broken rhythms of "Pelican" contend for top spot with "Return To Air" which has a touch of the Jamie xxs to it.

Review: Two song based highlights from Si 'Bonobo' Green's fifth studio album are paired on this 12" from Ninja Tune, with "First Fire" joined by the illustrious Badu collab "Heaven For The Sinner". As opening track for The North Borders, there should be few Bonobo fans unfamiliar with the ethereal delights of "First Fires" which musically harks back to Green's early output albeit married to a beat template more palatable to contemporary ears, whilst still demonstrating his obvious talent for crafting songs thanks to the vocal contribution of Brooklyn based Cinematic Orchestra affiliate Grey Reverend. It's no disservice to say it's overwhelmed by the B Side presence of Erykah Badu who is neo-soul incarnate on "Heaven For The Sinner" with Green's towering production sounding inspired by the mere thought of working with her.

First Fires (Maya Jane Coles remix)
Review: Bonobo's North Borders album just keeps on giving... Here we find one of its many highlights, "Ten Tigers", getting a floor-minded rework by Bonobo himself. Retaining most of the original aspects, he's added a slightly heavier dynamic that's idea for all floors. Also on a remix-flex is UK starlet Maya Jane Coles who flips "First Fires" into a treacle-thick, bass heavy house driver. And if that's not quite enough, Bonobo has also given us a brand new track... "Duals" is a bright, breezy and skippy broken beat affair that's laced with myriad uplifting textures and counter melodies. In a word? Dreamy. Ten (tigers) out of ten.

If You Stayed Over
Review: The three songs here show in all its glory the varied, yet entirely coherent sound that Bonobo has made his own. "Nightlite" features the unique, indefinable voice of Bajka (pronounced Biker). Bajka grew up as part of a travelling music commune called Embryo in places such as Afghanistan, Nepal and Pakistan. Now based in Germany she has released records on labels such as Ubiquity, Jazzman and Compost. A massive and varied talent, hear her soft-to-sharp vocals sit perfectly over a trademark falling chord change. "Recurring" displays Simon Green's odd talent for simultaneously defamiliarising and reassuring listeners, welding together disparate sounds that never let the attention waver. Finally, album highlight "If You Stayed Over" showcases the inspired pairing of Bonobo with fellow Ninja artist Fink. The song's wrenching vocals, Eleanor Rigby strings and ultra-sharp, blues sensibility add up to something very lovely indeed.

The Perfect Blues (Jacques Greene remix)
Review: Recent Ninja signing and all round great New York soul hope Jesse Boykins gets some choice remix treatment from a pair of artists who lend themselves to diverse assignments outside their common generic fields. Jacques Greene brings a whisper of his house leanings to bear, but focuses more on intricate reams of warm melody to work around behind Boykins' breathless vocal. Machinedrum meanwhile brings a more kinetic flavour with his inimitable drum programming, crafting a stunning syncopation with the vocal that leaves the tune running in two directions yet sounding utterly fluid at the same time.

Here Kevin Martin returns to his Ninja Tune roots for two new superb tracks with guest appearances from London Zoo vocalist Hitomi in opener "Catch A Fire" and the legendary Roots Manuva in "Tune In". Accompanying these are a re-lick of influential classic "Skeng" from Autechre, who bring out the deep, dubbed out sounds to perfection, and the funky tinged remix of "Poison Dart" from scene stalwart Scratcha DVA. Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Can't Take This No More (feat Daddy Freddy)
Rise Up (feat Inga Copeland)
Review: Kicking off his promising Acid Ragga sub label, The Bug turns back to his favoured sparring partner Daddy Freddy who voiced the seminal "Run The Place Red" many moons ago. Thankfully the acid / ragga hybrid isn't as crass as many might expect, instead swaggering with the kind of droning, claustrophobic production that has always typified Kevin Martin's approach. Daddy Freddy is on typically terrifying form as he croaks and growls, only to be completely inverted by Inga Copeland's own croon over the same riddim. Making a thoroughly natural transition from her Hype Williams habits, Martin's treatment of her voice brings it beautifully into a little more (but not too much) clarity for an arresting end result.

Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Review: Kevin "The Bug" Martin and Dylan "Earth" Carlson have finally teamed up for a collaborative release on the UK's mighty Ninja Tune. To be honest, both the artists and the label have all achieved institutional status by now, so you know its highly recommended from the onset. Each artist has been involved in many scenes and genres over the years, ranging from ambient metal to minimal drones and experimental two-step and "Boa" is exactly that, a weird and wonderful mixture of styles and influences. "Boa" and "Cold" share a slow tempo and a set of heavy, metallic guitars weaving over desolate soundscapes and rattling percussion. This is cinematic music to say the least.

Obviously Bannon feels Patterns of Excel is a landmark, with the producer looking to move on after spending some 14 months on the album. Those looking forward to more of the searing jungle instrumentals Bannon deployed on his excellent debut LP Alternate/Endings will be disappointed with Patterns of Excel a fifteen track exploration of glitchy ambient electronics and droning textures. It feels right at home on Ninja Tune.

Review: In the two years since he dropped his debut album on Plug Research, Fantastic Plastic, NYC producer Lee Bannon has ditched experimental hip-hop in favour of dark, cinematic moods and crunchy junglist rhythms. It's a surprising move - though, given the interplay between the two genres between the years, logical - but one that seems to have brought the best out of the talented 20-something. Alternate/Endings is atmospheric, intoxicating and inspired, as claustrophobic as it is evocative. It's like soundtrack drum and bass - vintage Amon Tobin with more old skool jungle rhythms, or Wagon Christ circa his Open Mind remix (a Ninja Tune classic, fittingly) - crossed with darkroom electronica. Furthermore, it's really rather good. Bravo, Bannon, bravo!

Review: Healing... first arrived in summer 2020, when most of us really needed to break the depression of life in and out of lockdown. Like so much of Barwick's work, these stunning choral moods offered a real sense of solace and refuge through deeply evocative sounds, with the theme of salvation carried throughout the beautiful pieces.

Even the title refers to an internet mantra poking fun at both the comedic and serious apocalyptic images we have all seen during the pandemic, and the possibility of humanity recovering. Initially unveiled as the disconnect between being 'saved' and 'lost' was at its peak, with the first vaccine now approved and light just about visible at the end of the tunnel things look different. But while we have never been closer to a solution, we have never been further from life as it once was, so the message here only resonates more.

The LA-based artist has said the album was written during an emotional time and so it all comes from the heart, direct to you, with no real goal, aim or MO, other than making the sounds she feel at the time. "It brought me to tears a little," she has said of the process, and Nosaj Thing, Mary Lattimore and Jonsi al feature across the album's eight cuts of moody and evocative ambient drones. From heavenly and happy to more intense and introspective, it's a perfectly honest work.

Review: The Ninja Tune renaissance has been underway for around a decade now, with the UK imprint, founded by Coldcut way back when, firmly cementing its status in the techno, rave and future bass world post-millennia. So good is the heavier end of the stable output we really needed Julianna Barwick to come along and remind us of the imprint's more delicate moods. Known for her deep compositions that look to celebrate, explore and consider the human voice in its many facets, 'Healing Is A Miracle' is a perfect calling card for the artist in question. Utilising a spine-tingling vocal range, and taking us directly into worlds where sound itself is a form of art, not just when arranged, the record was apparently born from an improvisation session on her looping equipment, which in turn directs the construction of the individual tracks. The serene but complex, minimal but layered and heavily textured work of a synth siren.

Having worked with artists as diverse as J Dilla and dBridge, his sound is characterised by a hugely varied conglomeration of styles and influences, but also methods. For instance, we've been told that this LP is made up exclusively of sounds generated from iPhone and iPad apps, so it's easy to see the man's versatility and openness to new sonic territories. "Modern Streets" itself is an intricate cocktail of ideas, incorporating remnants of drum & bass, digital dancehall and curb-side poetry. The whole LP is a daring and successful view into Spacek's multifaceted mind as a musician. Recommended.

Review: Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening.

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

Review: Since they emerged in 2019, there's been a fair amount of hype around Black Country, New Road, with one noted media outlet calling them, "the best band in the world right now". While that might be a little over-the-top, there's no doubting that they're a unique proposition - as this much-anticipated debut album on Ninja Tune proves. Stylistically, they're hard to pin down, variously fusing post-punk guitars, fuzzy Stereolab synths and folksy strings with thoughtful, story-telling spoken word vocals (think Arab Strap), restless bass guitar and drums and sax sounds that have more in common with the more experimental end of jazz than alternative rock. It's an usual mixture, but a hugely alluring and surprisingly coherent one. For The First Time is, then, a genuinely impressive debut album.

Review: RECOMMENDED
And the story is complete. Well, sort of. Ninja Tune has been a label of many labels for many people, depending on where they're listening from, for some time now, but with Ants From Up There it's journey from imprint grounded in relatively specialised forms of sound to just an all-round music institution is finally done.

Black Country New Road make music that's a million miles from the techno that shouts so loud from the Ninja roster right now. Nor are they comparable to the platform's downbeat, hip hop, nu-soul, and electronica roots. Instead, this is truly commanding, powerhouse indie rock 'n' roll that's likely to find favour with fans of everyone from Pixies to Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire to The Clash. Proof, if it were needed, that in 2022, and for some years already, all-over-the-place output isn't just fine, it really works.

Review: How do you better a debut album that was many critics favourite set of 2021? That was the task facing Black Country New Road when they headed into the studio to record Ants From Up There. Whether or not they've managed to outdo their fine debut is open to debate, but there's no doubt that this sophomore set is superb - a unique musical fusion that draws on a multitude of styles (indie, jazz, fiddle-sporting folk, pared-back post-rock, inspired experimentalism etc.) and melds them into an impactful, emotive and melancholic sound that largely defies categorization. This special edition of the album also includes a bonus CD featuring a recording of the band's lockdown live stream from Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, that's every bit as impressive.

Review: Top class New York producer Tony Simon has been delving into his archives to serve up reissues of a load of his most crucial albums. From the turn of the millennium onwards, he was a pivotal beat maker, joining the dots between instrumental hip-hop, trip hop, jazz, broken beat and downtempo in his own unique way. Downtown Science manages to be both organic and earthy yet synthetic and futuristic all at once, with real instrumentation and great vocal samples next to killer drums.

Review: A decade after Blockhead dropped his seminal Interludes After Midnight album it gets a deserving reissue on Ninja Tune. Blockhead is of course an alias of the revered New York producer Tony Simon who is reissuing all his albums at the moment. This one set a blueprint for the broken beat and nu jazz scene, with elements of trip hop and downtempo also colouring the grooves. Some tunes like 'Never Forget Your Token' have a Latin feel thanks to the keys and breaks, others are more psyched out late night store jams like 'Hungover Like Woah.' All are great.

Review: Blockhead is New York producer Tony Simon, a revered talent who has put out a wealth of crucial albums. They are all getting reissue treatment now as some are almost 20 years old, but they have weathered that time well. Music By Cavelight is another of his masterful takes on broken beat and nu-jazz and this one comes on nice orange-marbled wax. It peaked at number 43 on the UK Independent Albums Chart back in 2004 when it first landed and it only came to be on Nina Tune after its original label stopped answering the artist's calls.

Review: Since first emerging at the tail end of the '90s, Simon Green has become downtempo music's most marketable star, appealing just as much to occasional listeners and 40-something housewives as underground heads. Throughout that time, he's carefully shifted his sound to take in current trends and musical developments, whilst retaining a certain picturesque aesthetic. This fifth full-length, his fourth for Ninja Tune, continues that trend. Amongst the usual shuffling beats and twinkling melodies you'll find garage-esque vocal cut-ups, rubbery dancefloor rhythms, Floating Points style neo-jazz, string-laden two-step and some seriously wonky soul featuring vocals from Erykah Badu.

Review: Simon Greene aka. Bonobo is set to put forth yet another album from his own personal ether; 'Fragments' was born from actual sonic 'fragments' that were later repurposed into twelve full 'sonic affirmations'. A later escape into the wilds of California's deserts formed the bulk of this album's downtempo magnum opi; watch out for collabs with a foray of world-downtempo electronica acts including Jamila Woods, O'Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. One of his most heartfelt albums, expect all from lilting future garage ('Rosewood') to rave-nostalgic slow builds.

Review: Two years on from its initial release, Bonobo's much-loved Black Sands album got the remix treatment. While remix albums can be a bit hit and miss, Black Sands Remixed largely hits the spot - thanks in no small part to the A&R involvement of Eglo bossman Alexander Nut. The selection of remixers is open-minded and on-point, resulting in some near stunning interpretations. FaltyDL, Machinedrum and Cosmin TRG offer some decidedly floor-friendly rubs (the former's take on "All In Forms" delivering a great fusion of melancholic depth and skittering drums), while Arp101, Blue Daisy, Floating Points (in jazzwise mode) and fast rising youngster Lapalux turn in thrilling, sofa-friendly reworks.
