Hip Hop/R&B
  1. We Funk Tings (4:27)
  2. We Have It Hot (3:07)
  3. The Time Has Come (2:59)
Review: For the first volume in their brand new Toxic Funk 45s series, the Breakbeat Paradise crew has turned to two stalwarts of the breaks scene, Easy Now Recordings co-founder Tom Showtime and long-serving DJ/producer Badboe. They hit the ground running with A-side "We Funk Tings", a cut-and-paste workout that peppers a head-nodding, bass-heavy hip-hop groove with funk licks, hazy horns and sneaky vocal samples from a variety of ragga and rap records. They continue in a similar vein over on side B, where the horn and piano-heavy hip-hop-funk of "We Have It Hot" is followed by the boom-bap booty business of "The Time Has Come".

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Engine Dub Number 9 (Jorun Dusted Out Space Echo edit) (4:34)
  2. Opening Act (feat Emskee) (2:43)
Review: Fresh Pressings return with goods that are true to their name. It's Portugal by way of Halifax, Nova Scotia hip hop DJ and producer Jorun Bombay who is behind this one. He pioneered the scene in his native Canada, has led his own talent-filled coalitions and built up a fine discography over the last 15 years. This is a welcome new addition that finds him add tons of dubbed out space echo to "Engine Dub Number 9" while raw, funky breaks power it along. "Opening Act (feat Emskee)" is a more rolling beat with old school mic work and crisp hits.

International
  1. No, No, No (3:52)
  2. Evil Ways (instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Originally pressed (on a limited run) in 2013, LA Latin funk troupe Boogaloo Assassins have reissued these two spellbinding cover versions again due to public demand. Still on a highly limited run, both cuts need to be in your collection: Dawn Penn's "No No No" gets a strict samba switch with lavish percussion and consistent vocal harmonies throughout while Sonny Henry's "Evil Ways" (best known from its Santana cover) gets the dreamy instrumental treatment where the horns and glocks do the narrating over a tight bed of wood blocks, shakers and liquid Rhodes. Killer stuff and Juno is one of the few stores outside of USA which is carrying the 45. Don't Sleep !

Funk
  1. Release The Beast (4:50)
  2. Let Love In (4:34)
Review: American funk band Breakwater is best known for their hit "Release The Beast," which gets a reissue treatment by Be With. Even if you don't know the name, you'll recognise the track's withering lead riff because it was sampled by Daft Punk for their iconic "Robot Rock". It's mad to think such a futuristic sound was created somewhere in Philly in 1979, but it was. The flip side houses the smooth and buttery "Let Love In", a feel good, deep cut funk gem with vocal harmonies, bulbous bass and hip swinging claps.

Soul
  1. Mel Brit - "She'll Come Running Back" (2:22)
  2. The Group - "I Don't Like To Lose" (feat Cecil Washington) (3:02)
Review: Here's a treat for Northern Soul enthusiasts, as two sought-after classics that once made the Wigan Casino move are brought together on one must-have "45". On the A-side you'll find Mel Britt's 1969 gem "She'll Come Running Back", a heavy Detroit soul stomper (think bittersweet vocals, sweet orchestration and bold bass) that's long been unaffordable to all but the richest Northern Soul collectors. Over on side B you'll find The Group and Cecil Washington's "I Don't Like To Lose", a 1966 Motor City soul jewel that has been a "holy grail" for many soul collectors since leading scene DJ Richard Searling introduced it to the UK in 1979.
