Notes: On the 20th April 2006 Blackalicious and around 1200 fiends from the Pacific Northwest piled into Seattle's heralded Showbox Theatre to capture some bombastic moments in time. On this, their first ever DVD, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel alongside their incomparable supporting cast, delivered a legendary performance sure to rank high in the annals of hip-hop. Joining them as a part of this 45-day tour was Lateef, Pigeon John, LifeSavas, and Fat Lip of the Pharcyde. The energy that was in that smoke-filled room that night in Seattle was mind-blowing and the way it translates on this DVD from the HDV shoot and superb pro-audio mix is sure to satisfy.

Notes: The 7/07/07 performance in Brooklyn Ferry State Park by 77 Japanese drummers were filmed by Jun Kawaguchi & crew. The DVD includes the official live performance documentary, with behind-the-scenes rehearsal, interviews; more. The band includes Butchy Fuego, Kid Millions, Andee Connors, Daniel Franz, Chris Brokaw, Hisham Bharoocha, Brian Chippendale and Tim DeWitt, among others.

This musical release from the Japanese noise rock band Boredoms captures a unique performance staged by the group on July 7th, 2007, at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, New York, in which they assembled 77 drummers to accompany them for the concert. Among the percussionists joining the band on stage are Chris Brokaw and Brian Chippendale.

Notes: Having been only peripherally aware of Kate Bush, this examination of the work of the visionary English artist and songwriter was a fine education for me. In fact, now I know where Tori Amos, Joanna Newsom, and Bjork nicked some of their signature moves. Hah.

This newly-packaged set is, in fact, two earlier unauthorized Kate Bush documentaries, simply re-titled. So take that as you will.

The first disc, previously released as Kate Bush: Under Review, is a lengthy and detailed bio, complete with plenty of video clips and interviews with journalists and biographers. There are critical appraisals of all of Kate Bush's major albums, from Wuthering Heights in 1978 to her 2005 Aerial album. Under Review provides a wealth of info and history, and with the generous portion of visual and audio clips, a good illustration of the artists' music and styles. Quite enjoyable.

The second disc, previously known as Hounds Of Love: Under Review, fares almost as well. It begins with a simplified bio and history up until Bush's definitive Hounds Of Love album, which is then exhaustively examined, track-by-track, by some of the same journalists and writers as the first disc. Again, plenty of sound snippets and clips from promotional videos are presented, making this one a wholly worthy addition to any Kate Bush fan's collection.

A solid set, and A Life Of Surprises has encouraged people to check out some of this extraordinary artist's marvelous music.

Notes: From Emperor Media Ltd. and acclaimed producer/director Jon Brewer, music icon David Bowie narrates this unprecedented celebration of the life and works of guitar virtuoso Mick Ronson - a rock hero virtually unknown despite his direct contribution and involvement in countless compositions, lyrics and recordings that changed the face of music forever.

His humble beginnings in Hull, England underpinned the values and modest, unpretentious personality of Mick Ronson, who worked with the city's council while he pursued his craft with consummate dedication. Soon word of his talent reached David Bowie, who grabbed at the chance to work with Ronson, in what would become a career-long association, alongside collaborations with other greats such as Bob Dylan, Ian Hunter, Lulu and Lou Reed.
The Man Who Sold the World, Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, The Jean Genie - all were constructed with Ronson on guitar.

Sadly in 1993, while working on a solo album, Ronson passed away before receiving the recognition he so richly deserved or before taking that final bow. Now, with unprecedented access to archival backstage footage - never before released - and iconic imagery from superstar photographer Mick Rock, this fascinating and at times controversial special reveals the ultimate authentic chronicle of the career of a cornerstone of rock.

Notes: Originally shown in 1998, Big Train was the eagerly awaited follow-up to Father Ted from writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews. Resisting the pressure to make another sitcom, Big Train is, instead, a sketch show in the best Monty Python tradition, updated with influences from arch-surrealist Chris Morris as well as the contemporary The Fast Show. The sketches can be joyously odd--Pythonesque firefighting showjumpers, the evil hypnotist, and the outrageous onanistic office workers, for example--but the show never neglects to keep the punchlines coming thick and fast (though the animated staring contest does rather drag after a while). The cast comprises some of the best new names in comedy, including Kevin Eldon, Simon Pegg, Mark Heap, Julia Davis and Amelia Bullmore (who went on to become Alan Partridge's Ukrainian girlfriend).

Series 2 didn't pull into the platform until 2002, by which time Graham Linehan was absent writing Black Books. But Arthur Matthews maintains the quality of the first series on the whole--the man with oversized hands, the creepy cult questionnaire, the zookeeper's recruitment agency--adding some spot-on French art house cinema spoofs and other movie-style take offs somewhat in the manner of Spaced, which Pegg and Heap had gone on to make. That duo return here for more silliness along with new cast members Rebecca Front (The Day Today, Knowing Me, Knowing You) and Tracey-Ann Oberman (better known now as Chrissie Watts in Eastenders).

On the DVD: Big Train belatedly arrives on DVD in a two-disc set which includes a plethora of deleted scenes for both Series 1 and 2. There are cast biogs plus three of the sketches as performed on a German TV sketch show. Commentary on the first series is by both writers, though happily Pegg, Heap and Eldon gatecrash halfway through. Matthews and Eldon join director and producer for the somewhat more straight-faced commentary on the second disc. Menu options thankfully include the treasurable "Play all" facility. --Mark Walker

Notes: Extended documentary that examines the period David Bowie spent living in Berlin in the 1970s. Overworked and struggling with drug addiction, Bowie headed to Berlin in 1975 for relief from the stresses of LA life. He lived with Iggy Pop, who was in a similarly dishevelled state. Nonetheless, Bowie produced a series of albums in Berlin that arguably rank among his best. The programme makes use of archive interviews and performance footage to bring this period of the musician's career to life.

Notes: Limited copies are available of "Bullwackie In New York", an excellent documentary shot in the eighties, with all the usual suspects from the Wackies stable. This is a region 0 DVD.

Notes: A DVD featuring one of the last interviews with William Burroughs and previously unseen vintage footage of him during the 50's and early 60's. The great Beat Generation experiments took place in Tangier, the Moroccan city where William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and the Moroccan painter Hamri taught Jack Kerouac, Timothy Leary, and Allen Ginsberg how to live outside the law. Also featured are The Master Musicians of Joujouka collaborating with avant garde Dublin musicians, veterans of the Tangier Beat Scene, and cutting edge writers. In addition, there is music from Bill Laswell, The Baby Snakes, plus contributions from Ira Cohen, Hakim Bey, Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy) and many more.

Notes: The Label MPS (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) is known as the German "Blue Note". From the label's beginnings in the early 1960s up to its sale to Polygram in 1983 more than 600 records were put on the market by one of Europe's pioneering Jazz labels. Founder and producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's (HGBS) exceptional recording technique and the sheer musical quality of MPS records made the vinyl discs sought-after rarities. In addition to the most important German artists such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Wolfgang Dauner, The Kuhn Brothers, Volker Kriegel and others, many of the international greats made their way to the Black Forest, too: Oscar Peterson, George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty, Duke Ellington, Monty Alexander, Baden Powell, Dizzy Gillespie - to name only a few. MPS received an excellent reputation for it's high-quality progressive recordings. The "Jazz Meets The World" series is considered as fundamental to World music. Elke Baur's documentary "MPS - Jazzin the Black Forest" is an affectionate portrait of the label and his founder HGBS who died tragically in a car crash two years ago. Interviews with musicians and former MPS staff plus rare live and archive documents give an inside account of an era and the "Most Perfect Sound".

The directior is extremely creative with tools such as zoom, split screen and optical alienations, including tracking shots from the ceiling of the location. The band itself additionally gives everything in its committed and agile performance. As a plus there are four songs from a gig in London. With almost four hours of total playing time, this Blu-ray is filled to the brim and should be an essential part of any BLS collection!

Notes: William Burroughs was undoubtedly one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Amongst those who site him as an influence are Clive Barker, Patti Smith, REM, U2, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Cabaret Voltaire and the late Kurt Cobain, many of whom he collaborated with. His extensive literary legacy is constantly reprinted as each new generation study the man who influenced modern contemporary literature more than any other writer. His readings are legendary. "The Final Academy Documents" DVD contains a rare glimpse of the man himself appearing in public with some stunning readings from his work at Manchester's famous Hacienda club. Its very limited release on video in the 1980's makes this DVD even more collectable. Also featured on this highly collectable DVD are some wonderful examples of Burroughs' work as an experimental film artist. "Ghosts At Number 9" and "Towers Open Fire" are two classic examples of Burroughs' film work.

Notes: Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a feature-length documentary on the extraordinary life and visionary music of the American guitarist, singer and mystic Robbie Basho. Before his bizarre death at the hands of a chiropractor, Robbie Basho was sure that his compositions would not outlast him.

Orphaned during infancy, diagnosed with synaesthesia (a union of the senses that caused him to interpret sound as colour) and claiming to be the reincarnation of a 17th century poet--the Baltimore-born, Berkeley-based guitarist and singer's musical output was equally as outlandish as his persona. In his brief and troubled life he laid the foundations for radical changes to the musical landscape of America during the 1960s and '70s but reaped little more than a sparse (if fervent) following during his lifetime.

Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a journey into the heart of an artist's lifelong struggle: designed to illuminate and satiate existing fans while serving as a perfect starting point for the uninitiated.
