With a slew of classic 7"s and three critically acclaimed full length albums, they set a high bar for themselves, one which they clearly intend on pushing to even higher heights with this new offering. On their fourth album BRSB, Bacao return with more of the same, but more of the same with them is of course inherently different. Review: From the wreckage of Free came Bad Company, the English hard rock supergroup fronted by singer Paul Rodgers and featuring his drummer bandmate Simon Kirke, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell. Peter Grant, who managed the rock band Led Zeppelin, also managed Bad Company until 1982. The group's eponymous 1974 album debut decidedly proves the band is proudly not progressive - the details make a difference, as do the pastoral acoustics of the closing 'Seagull' - reducing their rock 'n' roll to a strong, heavy crunch; compare 'Ready For Love,' a tune Ralphs brought over from Mott the Hoople, to the original to see how these quartet members keep their heads down as they do their business. Review: Wally Badarou's incredible impression on modern pop music is intrinsically linked to his work in Nassau at the legendary Compass Point studios. There, the Paris-born synth legend lent his talent to a staggering amount of legendary music, but his own solo works have a magic all their own. 1984's Echoes might be the best known of his records, but there's a surprise entry from 2001 which is known to the deep-digging heads at Be With as a legendary record in need of wider release. Colors Of Silence was originally conceived as a yoga-minded release, but it's easier to consider it as another trip into the fantasy worlds Badarou can conjure from his eloquent synth work, and now it finally has a vinyl release.

As such, Blue Note turned back to this record for their Tone Poet series, as Baker's trumpet and Pepper's alto sax interact with Phil Urso's tenor sax, Curtis Counce's bass, Carl Perkins' piano and Lawrence Marable's drums. It's an all-time great sounding better than ever on this edition.

Review: Tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen made his debut splash when he was just 20 years old, impressing all those around him with the incendiary Guilde Du Jazz: 1957 album. Across the album, laggard, carefree swing and roomy bop abounded stylistically, leading one of his major inspirations, Miles Davis, to remark: "this is the best tenor saxophone I've heard in Europe; he plays tenor in an authentic way, much better than many current stars in the States." Unfortunately, this record was not widely distributed in Wilens' native France because he was under contract with the French label Vogue. Now reissued in its true home country under the wing of Sam Records, Wilen's Guilde is returns as an impressive portrayal of the saxophonist's aptitude for wild, ghostly playing, which succeeds in evoking a feeling of the uncanny despite its jubilant style.

Review: Famously first released in 1973 and transferred to CD in the 1980s with no significant remastering, the Beatles two colour-coded 'best of' collections have long been in need of an overhaul. Apple has typically gone all-out on this 50th anniversary re-issue, not only remastering everything (or at least those tracks that hadn't already been tweaked by Giles Martin in recent years), but also expanding each collection to three discs via the addition of other fan favourites and tracks that missed out first time round. As for the vinyl itself, it has been half-speed remastered to guarantee superior sound quality. This boxed edition boasts both compilations, plus an insert with fresh liner notes from music journalist-turned-Guardian scribe John Harris.

To say the New Musical Express pulled together an impressive line up for the magazine's celebratory concert, at which the winners of a reader's poll were revealed, would be an understatement. Review: Hadsel is a first full length record since Beirut dropped their 2019 work Gallipoli. It is the first on Zach Condon's own Pompeii Records label and was recorded on the Norwegian album from which it takes its name. Condon had to cancel a tour in 2019 to focus on getting well after a breakdown and used the process to recover after growing issues around self doubt. The beautiful songs reflect the vulnerability of the artists with gorgeous melodies and layers of subtly rousing chords, supple rhythms and great contrast between light and dark.

Review: The Boy With The Arab Strap gets a special 25th Anniversary rerub. The third album by Scottish indie popsicles Belle & Sebastian, originally released in 1998, it's one of the false duo's more acclaimed projects, having notably been made in the space of several months (compared to their first two albums which were supposedly each made in just a couple of days). Also more experimental and collaborative than their earlier work, the album dared to indulge spoken-word segments as well as increasing songwriting contributions from different members of the group. A controversy around the LP's name - indeed, perhaps only some among us will know what an Arab strap is - tops it all off. However, we can assure you that the new liner notes and behind-the-scenes photos included in the reissue don't emphasise its connotations, and instead reminisce over the LP's twinkly, sensitive indie-folk image.

Review: Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, is famed for his grasp of authentic vintage synth technology, called in to produce John Grant aming many others as well as Wrangler and Creep Show. He's been exploring the sonic possibilities of electronic instruments since he was a young boy, in the 1970s, and The View From Vega, his debut solo album on the DiN imprint, is primarily an ambient suite of tracks inspired by the space-music typically produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It uses a selection of vintage synthesisers, sequencers and FX units to provide a fertile sonic landscape to explore. The idea was to use simple sequences (using both analogue and digital units), sustained synthesiser pads and electronic piano improvisations, alongside various ancient delay, flange and reverb units. The beautiful, warm quality of the tones that exude from such instruments are very evident on the six tracks that slowly unfold their oscillations in organic, melodic soundscapes.
