Review: This intriguing and predictably atmospheric album is the first collaborative full-length from experienced modern ambient producer Dennis Huddleston AKA 36, and Los Angeles duo Awakened Souls, whose full-length hook-up with Pepo Galan, Palettes, received plenty of praise last year. Between them the trio have conjured up a hugely evocative and emotion-rich collection of cuts, where heart-aching, slow-motion guitar laments stretch out across swelling synthesizer chords, meditative pads, distant-sounding vocal snippets, enveloping aural textures and soft-focus piano refrains. It's a wonderfully meditative and picturesque set all told, and one that could well turn out to be one of the most essential ambient albums of 2021.

Review: A Certain Ratio's core trio of drummer Donald Johnson, bassist/vocalist Jez Kerr, and multi-instrumentalist Martin Moscrop make ACR Loco a perfectly fluid and funk album. In fact, on this, their first album in more than ten years, the Manchester post-punk outfit are as funky as they have ever been. Their tried and tested sound gets nicely updated with modern beat driven sounds and plenty of redefines to today's political strife in the lyrics. There are plenty of smooth and cool synth led grooves like 'Get A Grip' and messages of unity on 'Family' that we can all relate to.

With Phil Spector hailing the album as 'phenomenal', perhaps for somewhat conforming to his wally production technique, the band ended up being venerated near-timelessly for their quasi-electronic synth tunes like 'I Ran' (clock the use of early electronic drum pads in its breakdown). This is new wave at one its best pop-centric peaks.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1982, features the iconic track as well as other memorable cuts such as 'Space Age Love Song' and 'Wishing', adding extra far-out elements to the formula already cut out by The Cure. The band's distinctive hairstyle, featuring asymmetrical cuts and a gravity-defying swoop, became known as the "Flock of Seagulls haircut," even refernced in the film 'Pulp Fiction'. Cleopatra US's reissue of the album is a reminder of the band's lasting impact on 80s pop culture.

As a fan of their sound, Villalobos ran with the project and it wound up as a full remix album of seven different versions. On the earlier tracks Ricardo takes a surprisingly light touch, while the later stages find us knee deep in the mesmerising roll of his minimal house, shot through with dubbed out ingredients from the original songs. It's surprising and satisfying in equal measure, showing Villalobos at his best and quite the scoop for A Mountain Of One.

Review: The recent resurgence in interest in mid 1990s ambient techno has been one of the most positive trends of recent times, primarily because it has resulted in reissues of some long-forgotten and genuinely overlooked gems. A Positive Life's sophomore album Synaethetic, which was originally released by Beyond Records in 1994, falls into that category. Offering a suitably intergalactic, heady blend of undulating, psychedelic acid lines, ambient sound washes, bubbly beats, far-sighted sounds and stretched-out epics, it's an album that's as close to the original ambient techno blueprint as you're likely to find. If you love that style, it's a genuine must-have.

Review: As long as there is hip-hop, debate will rage as to which album by A Tribe Called Quest is their finest. Of course, they're all superb, but 1993's "Midnight Marauders" - their third full-length - may well be the best of all. That's a big call, but we'd ask any doubters to give it another listen. The New York crew is in particularly fine form on the mic throughout, while the backing tracks, which make great use of crunchy, head-nodding beats and hundreds of superb, hand-picked samples, are amongst the most intricately produced, groovy and deep ever committed to wax. It's one of those hip-hop sets that should be in the collection of any committed music head, and not just rap fans.

Review: The general consensus is that We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service, A Tribe Called Quest's sixth and final album, is something of a triumph, with many critics hailing it as the best full-length of 2016. It's certainly a fine set, full of their trademark musically rich backing tracks (enhanced, this time round, with a greater reliance on live instrumentation), conscious lyrics and distinctive, on-point vocal delivery. Given their legendary status within hip-hop, it's unsurprising to see a string of similarly high profile guests dotted throughout, with Busta Rhymes, Andre 3000, Kayne West, Consequence, Jack White and Elton John (presumably in sampled form) all lending a hand. Even if you're only mildly interested in hip-hop, this should be essential listening.

Review: Dustin O'Hallaran and Adam Wiltzie have been dealing in musique concrete for a while now, with releases on some of the most daring labels around. However, this latest work on Kranky is undoubtedly a significant step up for the outfit, with people such as Keith Fullerton Whitman having released on the label. Three extended slices of pure hedonism, each one growing and rising in emotion and momentum with each new melody. "Atmos VII" drops you into a tranquil soundscape surrounded by orchestral swirls of melodies and subtle kick drums, and "Minuet For Cheap Piano Number One" prolongs this journey through paradise thanks to some stunning keys and spine-chilling bursts of ambience. Over on the flip, the Greenhouse re-wiring of the title track is equally pensive but considerably more sinister, with an extra dosage of guitar feedback winding its way into the mix. Stunners.

Review: Swedish pop legends ABBA seem to be as talked about these days as ever, largely down to the fact that the holographic stage show proved such a huge success with all those who continue to pack it out in the capital. They were very much at the peak of their powers back in 1981 when The Visitors, their eighth studio album, arrived. It actually saw the group move away from their super light and airy and catchy pop of previous works and enter more mature and complex musical worlds. The fact that Benny and Frida had recently split up coloured some of the tunes such as 'When All Is Said And Done' and even topical Cold War themes were explored.

Review: To the delight of the 80s synth-pop faithful holding on to the decade prior, Martin Fry revived ABC in 1997 after a five-year hiatus. It's noticeable that Fry wasn't interested in repeating old tricks though, as he took the band in a new direction alongside Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory without losing that keen sense of songwriting magic that made ABC so popular the first time around. Loaded with emotionally charged reflections on life, the universe and everything, this is a welcome pressing on blue and white marble vinyl which is limited to 1000 copies.

Review: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Nope by Micael Abels accompanied the Oscarr winner Jordan Peele's famously expansive horror epic and helped take it to the next level. This is their third project together and maybe the most ambitious score of the lot. It draws influence from sci-fi, horror, action and westerns and there is a real blend between original score and source music. It is at times a terrifying listen and at others full of grand adventure, awe and wonder. The sounds scale up when needed to match the pictures and totters they make for a superb experience, but the soundtrack alone is one hell of a ride.

Review: Composer Michael Abels and Oscarr winner Jordan Peele have hooked up plenty of times on the big screen before, and this is another hugely successful partnership. Us was released in March 2019 and is an original nightmare that is set in present-day Santa Cruz on the Northern California coast. Lupita Nyong'o and Black Panther's Winston Duke star and the score features many highlights such as a 30-person choir, ten of them kids, on 'Anthem', while plenty of Eastern European instruments, violins and percussion were also employed. 1995 hip-hop anthem 'I Got 5 On It' by Luniz is also included and never fails to stand out.

Review: Formed in 1995, Belgian death metal icons Aborted have become renowned for their dizzying technicality and seamless fusion of the more brutal and melodic aspects of the genre, all the while harbouring a major predilection towards grindcore. Signing to highly revered metal label Nuclear Blast for their 12th full-length Vault Of Horrors, the project takes an old school approach to lyrical inspiration with each of the cuts based off of specific, classic horror films, from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ('Death Cult') to Halloween ('The Shape of Hate') to Hellraiser ('Hellbound') to later morbid entries such as The Mist ('Malevolent Haze'). That's before even mentioning the ludicrous array of guest vocal features across the album, appearing more like a hip-hop record at first glance with practically every track offering room to the likes of Alex Erian (Despised Icon), Matt McGachy (Cryptopsy), and Jason Evans (Ingested) to name but a small handful.

Review: It's fair to say Placelessness is the work of an Australian experimental supergroup. Oren Ambarchi has been a towering figure of hyper-minimalism since the mid-80s, most notably creating tense and elongated stretches of recordings and performance using guitar tone. Robbie Avenaim is an accomplished experimental drummer, and Chris Abrahams heads up The Necks. That's a very condensed biography for three incredibly accomplished musicians who finally make good on years of live collaborations and criss-crossed pathways to deliver a stunning album which brings their respective qualities into sharp relief, somehow fuller than their solo efforts without losing the vital subtlety and patience which has guided them to greatness.

From drawly blues through to seismic main stage energy. Highway To Hell is one of the group's seminal early outings, and any self-respecting fan should own it already. Although perhaps not in this stunning gold edition, released to celebrate the LP's 50th anniversary. Newcomers can expect an insight into the barrooms filled with sweat and spilt drinks from which this mega group came out of and a clue as to why Bon Scott, the lead singer who tragically died as they really hit fifth gear, will always have a place in our hearts.

Review: Six years is ages for a band to go without releasing an album or doing very much. But for AC/DC, whose work rate has always been ridiculously high, it's a very, very long time. Between then and now, the band lost their lead singer, Brian Johnson, to hearing difficulties in the middle of their last tour, and saw drummer Paul Rudd arrested in New Zealand for 'attempting to procure a murder'. Talk about impetus to finally call time.
But then these are the guys responsible for one of history's greatest heavy rock triumphs, 1980s's Back In Black, released just months after formative frontman Bon Scott tragically passed. So it's no surprise Power Up, another post-traumatic release albeit an act of reunification with now (relatively) healthy Johnson and innocent Rudd returning, is among their best in the 40 years since. Review: Following up the worldwide smash Back In Black was going to be a tough job for anyone, but AC/DC brought the big guns in - more specifically, the big gun on its cover, which we also get to hear in full explosive effect on the album's title track, the kind of epic most bands save for their closer but here designated the opening tune. While it's fair to say not as many of the tracks here made it into AC/DC classic territory as on its predecessor, the sound of the now Brian Johnson-fronted team in full power mode dishing out groovers like 'Let's Get It Up' and 'C.O.D' is pretty irresistible, while 'Breaking The Rules' marks new ground for them - a slow motion, headnodding anthem with the band's long running anti-authoritarian stance writ large upon it.

Review: The Australian rock gods' third album is one of their most varied in moods and displays a new found confidence in their sound, with songs like 'Squealer' and 'Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round to Be a Millionaire)' containing rolling instruemntal section where the band hit a trademark riff and interlocking groove and simply let it ride. Review: It's 1977 and AC/DC are not-so-fresh after a spell as the support on Black Sabbath's tour. Looking for a new bassist, after a disagreement over whether to pick Manfred Mann's Colin Pattenden, the band agree on Cliff Williams, who would remain in place until 2003. Recording what became Powerage, their fifth studio album, Atlantic Records soon complained there wasn't a sellable lead single. 'Rock 'n' Roll Damnation' took form, one of the group's outliers, which comes without standard guitar solo but with maracas and hand claps. While this proved divisive among die hard fans, the album itself has gold waiting to be discovered deeper down. 'Gimme A Bullet', for example, has been cited as the finest track the late Bon Scott would write, his lyrical flair and deft metaphorical wit shining through on a tune that won't let up. This was his final LP, and tragically three years later he was no longer with us, marking an end to the group's iconic first chapter.

Review: Guitarist extraordinaire and former Kiss vociferator Ace Frehley's tenth solo album 10,000 Volts is the sonic equivalent of Gakuryu Ishii's bolshy film 'Electric Dragon 80,000 Volts' - a massive, electrifying, out-of-this-world experience that embraces the pure shreddage of the electric guitar, in an ultimate face-off between human and machine. The analogy of overridden circuitry is unsurprisingly useful for evoking related emotions in Frehley's case, as on the title track, on which a perfectly phased-out riff accompanies the lyric, "She hit me like 10,000 volts, when I saw her face". Then come the covers, such as 'Walkin' On The Moon' and the equally raw in-your-facers such as 'Cosmic Heart' and 'Life Of A Stranger'. No fillers here.

Review: Three years after delivering a stunning debut album that cemented their position as this century's finest fusionists of Middle Eastern music and analogue electronic music, Acid Arab return with a sophomore set that's every bit as impressive. The basic ingredients remain the same - think Arabic vocals, instrumentation and percussion mixed with heavy drum machine rhythms, raw electronics and mind-altering TB-303 motifs - though the resultant tracks arguably draw on a wider range of electronic music influences. So as well as nods towards acid house and techno, the album also contains throbbing, dancefloor-centric workouts informed by EBM, Italo-disco, new wave, synth-pop and industrial. It's a subtle switch-up, but one wholly in keeping with the French quartet's distinctive vision.

Among the least talked about historically is the lack of space made for South Asian and South Asian-heritage artists, who, despite the written pantheons doing their best not to emphasise it, have contributed an incredible amount to the canon's many genres. The Paris-based production duo invite us into ever-deeper corners of their sound, from the tense prog chug of 'Ya Mahla' and the stripped techno build of 'Rachid Trip', to the slick and sexy, writhing broken gem 'Gouloulou', it's as varied as the influences involved.

Review: Not content with merely being one of the biggest selling indie bands of right now, Yard Act are busy carving themselves a tasty side hustle as A&R men, with their Zen FC label scooping up some of the most exciting other music around as well as their own. This album from Sheffield's long serving synth maverick Adrian Flanagan (Kings Have Long Arms, Eccentronic Research Council, International Teachers Of Pop) is not an obvious choice for the guitar slingers, being closer to electro pop than indie, but it's a compulsive and ingenious listen all the same. Written during lockdown, it follows the rise and fall of an imaginary superstar DJ, each song pushing the narrative along and featuring a plethora of guests, including Richard Hawley and Maxine Peake, both of whom feature at the album's 'comedown' conclusion.

Review: If you don't know Acid Mothers Temple, get to know. This terrific psychedelic rock band is part of the quintessence of Eastern counterculture, self-defined as a "freak-out group for the 21st Century", led by Kawabata Makoto. With most of their albums centring on a ten minute long prog-haze freakouts, Paralyzed Brain here is no exception, with its three star pieces - 'Cemetery Orbital Drive 0011', 'Paralyzed Brain' and 'Magic Bohemian Has Gone' - adding up to a whopping deluge of consciousness-expanding rock. Now reissued on LP after its first, limited edition CD-only version as part of 'The Electric Dream Ecstasy Tour' in 2018.

Review: Leipzig band Acid Rooster have been laying out their template for hard-boiled psych rock for some six years now, and they're getting stronger with each release. This latest album is made up of six long-form jams doused in FX and holding down sustained grooves in a manner which doffs its cap to the pioneers of krautrock from Ash Ra Tempel to Amon Duul. There is a dustier finish to the band though, as they show themselves to be equally in thrall to the lurid squall of the American psyche explosion, but somewhere in the middle they come out truly sounding like themselves.

Review: Alexandre Gande AKA Le Syndicate Electronique presents his new project on the new Libertine X label series from Libertine Records. Billed as a journey into more exploratory, or 'wavey' sounds for a guy many herald as one of France's coldwave/electro crossover pioneers, that shouldn't be taken to mean things lack solid grounding here. As per 'Find Me Fine', its unashamedly rave-y stabs, acid line and druggy, looped mantra, this is still about setting it off.

Review: He may now be a bona-fide global celebrity with a string of books, TV shows and film appearances to his name, but Action Bronson remains a fine rapper - even if we don't hear those skills as much as we once did. If you still need convincing, check out Only For Dolphins, his first album on two years. His love of trash talking, tall tales and classic boom-bap style flows has not changed, but his subject matter is more varied. The beats he raps over have evolved significantly, too. Over the course of the album, there are fewer bog-standard "golden era" type backing tracks; instead, you'll find killer beats that offer nods towards Brazilian samba and MPB, reggae, smoky jazz and Latin music.

Review: Minimal synth Dutch pioneers The Actor dropped this classic in 1982 on Trumpett Tapes. It was a cult favourite amongst those who know that eventually got reissued for the first time by Mannequin Records in 2014, and now comes another new drop but with the added bonus of a whole extra slab of wax. It is packed with extra full-length of demos from the 1981-1984 period and makes for some superb tonic for lovers of rusty analog synths. Cold yet alluring with textbook deadpan vocals, this is crisp coldwave at its best.

Much like previous long players from the Werkdiscs boss, Ghettoville is not an album your brain will digest in one sitting, especially since it packs in sixteen tracks across the three slabs of vinyl. Described as "the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image," Ghettoville draws on all the familiar Actress signifiers with the ghostly remnants of hip hop, Detroit techno and Chicago house scattered across the album. Review: Darren Cunningham continues his inimitable exploration as Actress with a new album reportedly informed by game theory. Drawing on the tactics of chess as a framework for creating and releasing his ninth studio album, the artist himself describes this as a 'voyage into luxury sonics', and indeed 'Push Power (a 1)' has a certain languid piano jazz sophistication to it. But there's still plenty of that rugged, off-centre groove beating away underneath, and in its subdued and singular style, it feels like an Actress record through and through. Profound, moving and bold in its originality, this is yet another triumph for an artist who constantly shakes up the conventions of club music.

Review: Actress is back with another masterful diversion away from the tired old narratives of what dance music used to be. Darren Cunningham himself suggests this record is a 'voyage into luxury sonics', and you can find yourself carried away on some truly exquisite musicality whether it's the meandering jazz piano of 'Push Power (a 1)' or the haunting voices flickering through 'Game Over (e 1)'. Throughout, though, there's still that strong sense of Actress as he's always been, anchored by grubby rhythms, passing through a filter unique to his sound alone. This special edition of the album comes with a bonus disc containing the '88' LP, which originally only came out on tape and digital in 2020.

Review: The second full-length from Los Angeles crust-punk/powerviolence mob ACxDC (Antichrist Demoncore) arrived in 2020, six years after their venomous self-titled debut made good on the promise of over a decade's worth of demos, EPs and splits. Satan Is King (a nod to Kanye West's 'Jesus Is King' released the year prior) is another caustic batch of pummelling d-beat punk funnelled through a rusted scuzzy decanter of hardcore fury and satanic worship, featuring feel good hits of the summer such as 'Copsucker'. In all seriousness, if you find your current hardcore lacking in the blasphemy department or just a tad too sanitised, then look no further than this crushing collection of audible violence from true cavern crawlers of the underground.
