Review: Leapfrogging conventional rock sounds and hop-scotching conformity, these unassuming young gentlemen yell "Up your pigeon-hole!" to an industry obsessed with format and repeated musical templates. In the humble surroundings of a quaint English seaside village, the members of Odd Shaped Head reside in chaotic harmony: Paul (bass/vocals), Ricky (guitar/vocals), Rob (drums) and Andrew (guitar); from childhood chums to grown up geeky misfits. The quirky quartet release their new single "Egomatic Annie". Their eclectic brand of energetic, rhythmic, funk-punk, jerky bass popping, powerful scatterbrained drumming and stabbing guitars bursting into vibrant melodies draws more fans along to venues already packed with a collage of characters. This is not to be missed.

  5. I Always Walk Around With A "Tranquil Void" In My Pocket One That I May Pull Out An Any Given Moment
Review: Given that "power trio" Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi have released numerous acclaimed albums on Black Truffle, it seems fitting that they've returned with a new set to mark the label's 50th release. The five tracks - all of which boast suitably epic titles - were actually recorded in 2015 as part of a now near legendary performance at Tokyo venue SuperDeluxe, though this is the first time the recordings have been released. Musically, what we get is a raw, distorted and intense blend of skittish, loose-limbed drums, fuzzy bass, screeching guitars, spooky Hammond organ lines, wild aural textures (a by-product of their extensive use of effects pedals) and bi-lingual vocals from Haino. It's a pretty sweaty and out-there affair, but the energy and intensity is infectious.

Review: Amongst highlife enthusiasts, Nkem Njoku & Ozzobia Sound's sole album is regarded as something of a classic, not least because of its party-friendly take on "Igbo highlife", a sub-genre of the Ghanaian style that utilises traditional Ogene 6/8 bell rhythms. The album's six tracks are infectious and wholeheartedly positive, with the assembled band - which included John Kante on guitar, a full horn section of boogie-era highlife keyboard maestro Jake Sollo - delivering instrumental backing tracks that ripple with colourful motifs, killer grooves and more than a hint of gospel righteousness. The title is certainly fitting, because it's a very special album indeed.

Review: Despite building his reputation as a creator of tough, left-of-centre club material, Objekt is smart enough to realize that the full-length format offers more room for experimentation and personal musical exploration. Like its predecessor, 2014's "Flatland", "Cocoon Crush" rarely goes in search of dancefloor thrills, instead offering up a refreshingly eclectic, fearlessly experimental take on off-kilter electronica that not only draws heavily on IDM, glitch-hop and ambient, but also regularly veers from glassy-eyed, melodious positivity, to intense, paranoid darkness. It's a blend that guarantees great results, and we're not surprised if he jettisons functional club music for good.

Review: Life partners and musical soulmates Octa Octa and Eris Drew have done much to raise the profile of transgender artists within dance music, and as a result their first contribution to Fabric's ongoing mix series seems genuinely significant. They've naturally pulled out all the stops for the occasion, gathering together choice cuts from the last 30 years, some of which have been sought-after secret weapons in their sets over the last decade. The all-action mix is highly entertaining, with highlights including the strobe-lit proto tech-trance of Westbam & Dr Motte's 'Sunshine', the mind-mangling techno intensity of DJ Hyperactive's 'Reptilian Skank', the warped bassline pressure of Y U QT's 'Fort Wibbler', and Orbital's storming, hard-to-find 1992 remix of Global Method's Inner City-sampling rave anthem 'Good Life'.

Review: It's fair to say that "Ur Fun", the first album in years recorded by of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes on his own, is less an album-proper and more a collection of very, very strong singles. Each vying for attention against some intimidating competition elsewhere on the track list, it's important to make clear that while all are individuals, the LP doesn't feel disjointed or cluttered. It's just a whole lot of, fun. "You've Had A Good Time" seems to summon the spirit of the Pet Shop Boys circa 1989. "Deliberate Self Harm Ha Ha" might remind some of Kasabian, and '"Gypsy That Remains" is a dreamy, deep-but-direct synth workout wearing heart firmly on sleeve. Sonically diverse, it's impossible to deny that to pull off something like this you really need a master songwriter and instrumental crafts-person.

Review: When it comes to creating fresh instrumental hip-hop jams out of record label catalogues, Oh No has an impressive track record. The long-serving producer - famously Madlib's younger brother - has previously performed the service for Stones Throw, Miserable Beast Music and Now Again, a label he first worked with a decade ago. Here he returns with a third set of tracks created from gems in the Now Again vaults. It's a sparkling set, all told, comprising head-nodding beats and musical treats deftly sculpted from obscure, inspired and overlooked jazz, soul, funk and boogie rubs. Those with a good knowledge of the Now Then back catalogue will have fun spotting the samples; everyone else can just sit back and enjoy the producer's brilliant work.

Review: Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and Oh Wonder have clearly attempted to distill that idea into their latest long form. So hard to pin down, the work here straddles many genres, all of which are accessible in their own way. Yet it never fully commits; universal adoration is clearly the goal.

For dedicated fans "No One Else Can Wear Your Crown" may be jarring. The record sees Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West, et al, explore avenues that aren't always the obvious matches for their sweet pop lullabies. There's more than a smattering of EDM throughout, see those power drops and all that synth discordance. "Nothing But You", arguably the finest here, sees contemporary R&B and shiny hip hop flows come to the fore. Of course there's plenty of Oh Wonder-ness too, "Happy" being one example, but this will be remembered as their most daring and different to date.

Review: Following the reissue of "Une Collection Des Chainons I: Music For Spiral" last year, the ever excellent WRWTFWW return to the archives of Japanese experimentalist Yoshio Ojima for a second immersive trip into his ambient archives. For fans of Midori Takada and the explosion in reissues and new music from the Far East, this is another essential document of wide-ranging, consistently compelling sounds. At one point you might be lost in a bath of resonant metal frequencies, at the next floating through an elegant reverie of flute and chimes pock marked with laughter - it's a fascinating trip, wherever Ojima takes you at any given time.

Review: It's not hard to start picturing the kind of world Old Tower belongs to. Everything from the track titles to the sense of wonder and awe invoked through the use of choir voice lines forges a Middle Earth kind of vibe, making for a real adventure into vivid sonic territories that lie somewhere between ambient, drone and doom synth folk. It's not for the faint-hearted, basically. In many ways the sense of size is most pervading - tracks here sound as though they were recorded in a monastery, or ancient catacomb. 'Loremaster' arguably offering the strongest case in point, with its dramatic organs and pounding ritualistic drums. Matched with the spiritual grandeur of 'Shadow Over Thy Kingdom' and the sense of desolation and unease running through 'The Fallen One', it all makes for quite the trip.

Review: Olden Yolk are fresh psychedelic pop-rock-folk and downbeat-pop duo Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer outta New York. Bringing together stomp boxing guitar rhythms with synthesized sounds, space echoes and other trippy textures, the band's work finds itself in a middle ground that's somewhere in the midst of The Go-Betweens or Yo La Tengo. "Living Theatre" presents the pair with their second album and it follows last year's self-titled LP, this time delivering hypnagogic folk and kosmische rhythms, expanding and refining Butler's work with former band Quilt. Our picks being the dreamy episode in "Meadowlands" and the shoegazing surf folk of "Grand Palais".

Review: Last year saw Angel Olsen break through with her highly acclaimed third album 'My Woman'. To follow that success comes 'Phases', a raw and intimate collection of demos, B-sides and rarities recorded over the last seven years. Compared to her previous studio albums, these demos are more stripped back - giving a little more room to showcase Olsen's powerful and broad vocals, which here err more on the side of vulnerability than the grungy confidence to be found on 'My Woman'. Considering this is essentially an album of unused tracks, the sheer quality and weight of these haunting and wry offcuts is nothing if not impressive, and in their chronological arrangement provide a guided tour of Angel Olsen's development so far.

Review: There's little doubt that honey-voiced singer Omar Lye-Fook is one of the finest soul talents to emerge from the UK in the last four decades. For proof check out this much deserved two-disc retrospective (his first since 2004's "The Collection"). Stacked with collaborations with top-tier talent (Terri Walker, Leon Ware, Carleen Anderson, Kele LeRoc, Scratch Professor and Stevie Wonder all feature), "Anthology" showcases his impressive diversity through top-quality tracks that variously touch on turn-of-the-90s street soul, neo-soul, jazz-funk, boogie, easy listening, acid jazz, hip-hop soul, jazz, R&B and broken beat. Throughout, his slick vocals and thoughtful lyrics stand out.

Review: A few eyebrows were raised when Omar-S announced the title of his latest album. While clearly meant as a controversial talking point, the title should not distract from what is one of Alex 'Omar' Smith's strongest collections of cuts to date - and one with an all-star cast of Motor City collaborators (Rick Wilhite, Norm Talley and OB Ignitt all feature). Musically, it's pleasingly diverse, with Smith effortlessly drifting between 21st century P-funk ("In My City"), cowbell-powered deep-house funk ("Don't Leave Me Standing Yeea"), sparse and synth-heavy house hypnotism ("Mell'like Boom Boom In'dair"), disco-house jack ("Washtenaw County Horn Section"), sub-heavy Detroit-meets-Sheffield minimalism ("You Gotta Beat The Clock") and sunrise-ready dancefloor dreaminess ("Simply"). This CD edition also includes four cuts not available on the vinyl edition.

Review: Last time it was only Omar S that could do it; this time he's thanking us for letting him be Omar S. That's right the FXHE boss returns with an eagerly awaited new album brandishing some 14 tracks. Omar S albums naturally tend to sell themselves but, for those still curious, Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself sounds like a perfectly executed culmination of the ideas AOS has explored on the numerous 12"s since his last album. As soon as the crunchy mechanical dramatics of opening track "I'll Bring U Ah Lil Sumpin Back" launch into action you feel like you're in for quite the journey and the subsequent swerves through Detroit flavoured electro, piano flecked house, beatdown and techno come with satisfaction guaranteed.

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith has always come across as fairly militant in terms of his musical output, so it's still a surprise that he's chosen to celebrate the first decade of his FXHE label by putting out a series of mixes. This second installment expands on the first - released earlier this year - mixing familiar staples and scene anthems (Smith's own "It Can Be Done But Only I Can Do It") with lesser known gems. Musically, it's impressively raw, with Smith moving through a range of tough, stripped-back techno grooves and dystopian acid house gems before reaching for more melodious cuts such as the shimmering "Flying Blind" and melancholic "Three Blind Rats".

Review: Omar S has always been something of a maverick, but even by his own high standards, surprise second album It Can Be Done, But Only I Can Do It is something else. Like much of his work, it's an album of acute contrasts: tough and aggressive on one hand (the ragging acid of the opener and "Ganymede"), soft, calming and blissful on the other ("Nite's Over Comption"). Along the way, highlights are plentiful, from the heady deep house of "You Wish", sparse porno beatdown of "Look Hear Watch" and hypnotic rhythms of "Bobien Larkin", to the next generation Motor City techno of "Over You Two" and near-anthemic simplicity of "Here's Your Trance, Now Dance".
