Retroactive
Review: Rekid is the alter-ego of Matt Edwards. With numerous recording projects (Rekid, Radio Slave, Quiet Village, Mathew E, Sea Devils) Matt Edwards’ music breaks down the traditional barriers of dance music and exposes influences from Walter Gibbons to Andy Weatherall to DJ Harvey to create a truly unique sound. "85 Space/Retrospective" are two more amazing slabs of tech/disco/slowed down house, his trademark sound as a taster for his forthcoming album "Made In Menorca".

Review: Classic reissue! A stunner from Gwen. One of her catchiest club tunes from the early years! "It Should Have Been You" bounces along on a tight bassline, with riffing guitar, and sweet washes of keys that really set the scene for the strong lead vocal flipside contains "God Don't Like Ugly'.

Review: The soulful title track to her album of the same name, "Bad For Me" is remixed here with a bit more flair by Larry Levan! The tune skips along at a really upbeat little pace, not really club but with more of a boogie flavour overall and it's backed by a mellower number with some jazzy George Duke production!

Genius Of Love (long version)
Lorelei (instrumental)
Review: In 1980 Tina Weymouth was playing bass for the Talking Heads while her husband Chris Frantz played drums. The couple were vacationing in the Bahamas when they met Monty Brown and Stephen Stanley. Together the four set out to make the kind of music that David Byrne and the Talking Heads stayed clear of: romantic, sunny, dance-able pop music. Their debut single, "Genius Of Love" is that classic early 80s cross between synth-pop and hip-hop, and went right to the top of the dance charts, securing them an identity separate from that of Talking Heads. It found a home in the samples of several hip-hop aficionados and was even nicked by Mariah Carey for her 90s hit, "Heartbreaker".

Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. Last but not least is the Black Mustang mix of "Constantly No Respect", a hard-hitting percussive jam exploring the darker side of the Italo universe.

Review: Minimal Wave presents an exquisite 7" EP release by Martin Lloyd entitled "L'Amant Electronique". Martin is mainly known for his Oppenheimer Analysis (Minimal Wave) and Analysis (Survival Records) projects, yet through the years he recorded over two dozen tracks on his own, most of which never saw the light of day. The four selected tracks were recorded between 1980 and 1984 in his own "Feedback Studios" in Battersea , London. Martin Lloyd delivers vocals via the vocoder and carefully layers synth melodies which range from upbeat and danceable, to what could be the soundtrack to a 1981 post-apocalyptic science fiction film. The record is pressed on white vinyl with a heavy black jacket (spot gloss) and is limited to 999 hand-numbered copies.

Fired Up
Review: The Peoples Potential Unlimited quest to unearth the Atlantic boogie that time forgot continues unabated - this time reviving a1983 gem from Detroit's The X Man. Wrapped in an excellently presented sleeve, the somewhat mysterious X-Man supposedly had what should have been a fruitful musical career cut short by a 30 year stint in a Motor City psychiatric hospital. This was no obstacle for PPU however, who were granted the master tapes to press up "That Body" and "Fired Up" at 45rpm on a nice fat twelve! There's an undeniable funk swagger to "That Body" which sounds like Jimmy Edgar if he was a child of the 70s - in a word, killer. The B Side proto hip-hop bump of "Fire It Up" proves to be just as infectious, driven by some loose limbed synth flourishes.

Ihasama (Jay Shepheard remix)
Review: With both Roberto Rodriguez and Kimmo Oksanen established producers in their own right under a multiplicity of aliases, it is no surprise it's taken the duo some four years to revisit their Bermuda project. Listening to the three variations that make up Ihasama, such a wait has clearly been worth it! Whilst the vinyl release doesn't contain the retro stylings of the original, Bermuda are on hand to deliver an extended club edit which imbues "Ihasama" with a more discofied burn. Complementing this is a Nacho Marco remix that brilliantly introduces a proto house vibe to proceedings as it unfurls across the A Side. Finally rising UK House hero Jay Shepheard adds to his rep with a remix suitably infused with atmosphere and emotion. Big tip!

I Need A Dollar (Tensnake remix)
Review: This week's lesson in simple musical mathematics is demonstrated by Tensnake and Aloe Blacc. The former's inexorable rise in 2010 has perhaps been matched by the worldwide popularity of the latter's "I Need A Dollar", so getting Mr Niemerski on board to remix the track was a smart move. The end results are typically appealing, with Blacc's vocals looped brilliantly around a burning deep house arrangement that peaks in all the right places. The central energetic pulse of cavernous bass stabs and slick hi-hats are inundated by massive swathes of soaring chords as the track progresses, with the requisite breakdowns augmented by choral vocal refrains. Totally euphoric in its intentions and execution, this is bound to have devastating effects when implemented at the right time.

Everybody Stand Around
Give It To Me
Review: Killer Endless Flight 12" debut for the Creative Swing Alliance duo of Pablo Valentine and Steven Joyce Ames - two names that should be familiar to the deep house cognoscenti! Valentine runs the MCDE label, while Ames has been responsible for drops on Compost, Soultronik and Jazzmin, though together as Creative Swing Alliance they're on another level. As lead track "Assado" slips into action, those thick bass drum kicks are soon consumed by a richly detailed procession of textures, dub laden vocal edits and percussion that collectively glower with resplendent energy. Alongside this, the detuned jazz thonk of "Everybody Stand Around" gets a much needed vinyl release after featuring on Endless Flight's fifth edition of I'm Starting To Feel OK, while the flip has Valentino going solo for the excellent, hand clap laden beatdown of "Give It To Me".

Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

I'm In Love (instrumental version)
Review: Having given the Dream 2 Science album the wider audience it richly deserved earlier this year, Rush Hour dig out another NYC garage classic from the archives of Ben Cenac for a much deserved reissue. Unlike that album, this Sha-Lor record Cenac recorded in collaboration with vocalists Sharmelle and Lorrie back in 1988 gained wider success, becoming a Summer Of Love staple. It's not hard to see why "I'm In Love" proved so enduring on the A Side Caught Up mix either, with the duo's vocals still retaining a power to move some 24 years on, while Cenac's stripped back bass heavy production is NYC garage at its finest. This being Rush Hour, there's also the bonus of a previously unreleased instrumental version occupying the flip.

Review: A serious piece of soul sampling history right here. "Evil Vibrations" is instantly recognisable thanks to De La Soul's "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays". Fast-paced boogie blessed with swooping sugar harmonies, it still sounds as smooth as it did when originally released in 78. Touching stargazing ballad "The Star Children" was even more popular with the hip-hop set scoring cameos on cuts by both RZA and Mobb Deep. Both cuts are taken from the album Help Us Spread The Message. Criminally it's their only LP!

Review: As far as the Juno Records review team care, the DC based Peoples Potential Unlimited have been on a run of 100% boogie heaters roughly since their inception in 2008. The latest transmission from Andrew Morgan's label sees a 12" presentation of disco funk holy grails from Milwaukee act Dazzle ahead of a PPU released long player Made In The Shade. Not to be confused with the Patch Adams and Leeroy Burgess fronted group of the same name, Dazzle was the work of Donald D. Smith and this 12" presents three tracks originally recorded in 1981. "Explain" is the outright jam here, heavily stacked with thick analogue leads and brisk funk riffs. All hail PPU!

The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. "Ain't Nobody" from Rufus and Chaka Khan is a classic, and has been subjected to numerous edits and reworks over the years; this version from Late Night Tuff Guy belongs amongst the better ones, looping and extending the original and laying it over his trademark crunchy slo mo beats. In Your Mouth (An African On Marz respray)
Review: Released back in 1984, "Din Daa Daa" by German percussionist George Kranz remains one of the most unlikely cross over hits of it's time and has been subsequently sampled and covered to the extent it's hard to keep tabs on. One of the more memorable covers came back in 2004, when Roots went deep with their own inimitably soulful and spiritual take for the final track on their LP The Tipping Point. It's this version that's the focus of Modern Artifacts attention here as Ashley Beedle and Darren Morris adopt their Africanz On Marz guise to deliver a suitably cosmic version. Lending "Din Daa Daa" a whole new vibe, it's little surprise that Gilles Peterson has already picked up on it. This dancefloor burner is complemented by the more laid back Afrikanz On Marz take on Rundgren's "In Your Mouth" which veers into deep and dubby house territory without losing any of Todo's blue eyed soul beauty.

Review: Tough by name, sexy by nature, here we find Australia's LNTG focusing on two very well-known disco funk gems. First up is a chugging, jacked up take on Chic's "I Want Your Love". Adding rhythmic muscle and fine-tuning the bass, it's a fine example of a quintessential edit. Next up are two renditions of Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica". The titles speak for themselves... Those looking for a dancefloor sing-along should head for the full vocal mix while those looking for more a bass-loving boogie showdown should head for the funkin' remix. Review: File Under Disco have amassed some serious respect in house and new disco corners. Check these glittering grooves from Maffia Club's Rocca and you'll understand just why: "Pizza On Wednesday" struts and sways with beautifully rounded Prelude-style bass run, soft sexy vocals and charming flute parps. Elsewhere we hit "A Magical Day", a seriously spaced out, stripped back nodder that's peppered with bubbly FX, staccato synths and a muscular bassline. "Love Power", meanwhile, is as authentically disco as it gets: big strings, cheeky synth squiggles on the fills and, above all, a big old stomping groove. Feel the love!

Allegedly recorded with the help of a ten piece live band, both the title track and "Midnight Mirrors" are evocative of the sort of modern lo-fi funk that PPU corners the market in these days. Bringing the Miami heat, "Charlene" is a veritable dancefloor bomb, with a rugged boogie bassline the sort of flirtatious element that hips can't say no to. B Side cut "Midnight Mirrors" is more of a late night number with some exquisite synth work. Props to PPU!

Review: The Late Nite Tuff Guy gets in on the action once again with this triple gripper of edit goodness. Those with a perfunctory grasp of disco knowledge will probably guess that the title cut from this Make Me Feel 12" takes it's cue form the classic disco track by Sylvester and in the hands of the Tuff one we have a beefed up rendition that will service any self respecting discotheque dancefloor perfectly. "Love To Love" eases down the tempo and turns up the heat as LNTG brings his Midas Touch to the Donna Summer standard, whilst "He's Mine" is a nice little muscled up tweak on the Brandy and Monica classic.

And they still sound as relevant and timelessly funky now as they did when this arrived in 1981. The original is a tight Chic-style guitar and bass groove that's accentuated by occasional falsetto vocal hits and flurries of disco bubbles and street sounds. Flip for "Summer Groove (Moving On)" where the blistering tight bassline and guitar licks are complemented with a tiny bit more vocal majesty. Review: San Francisco's Dark Entries label does a good line in reissuing obscure, long forgotten, left-of-centre gems (their excellent collection of Patrick Cowley's little known soundtrack work for gay porn films, School Daze, was arguably one of the compilations of 2013). Here, they've unearthed another overlooked gem - Art Fine's previously rare-as-hen's-teeth dark Italo-disco gem "Dark Silence" (L200-plus for an original 1985 copy, should you be feeling flush). It's pretty much a straight copy of the New Wave-inclined original, with the sparser, looser "Long Version" (in which producer Fabrice Belli gives the synth melodies a little more room to express themselves) joining the dense "Art Fine Version".

Shaluza Max - "Mangase"
Tabu Ley Rochereau - "Hafi Deo"
Review: A special summer-tuned dedication to two of Africa's most creative contributors who both passed away at the birth of the New Year. First up, South Africa's Shaluza Max's 2002 classic gets the revisitation it deserves; big accordions, honeyed Zulu vocals and a chugging groove that could plough into any dancefloor under the sun, it struts with a timeless sense of universal groove science. Flip for a rewind to the mid 80s as Soundway pays tribute to the hugely prolific Tabu Lay Rochereau. Complete with smooth, soothing synths, show-stopping harmonies and slinky bassline that won't quit, it's as heart-rending now as it was 30 years ago.

Party Over (Inkswel remix)
Review: Slight Delay aka Tiago makes a welcome addition to the Vibrations camp with this supreme e.p of leftfield house. 'West Sonic Vibe' is a deep eastern infused tropical gem with 'Party Over' taking on a harder edge on the same mystical journey. Oz producer of the moment Inkswel takes on the remix duties and rocks 'Party Over' into a slower funked up, bass line heavy trip via Sugarhill.

10 Dollars (Soft Rocks 'Tactical Assault' remix)
Review: New Yorker Elliot Taub graces this 8th Kinfolk release with 3 trax of varying intesity. 'Do That Dance' is an uptempo melodic bass and synth heavy dancefloor jam. 'Thirteenth Roll in A Bakers Dozen' takes a slower spaced out route. '10 Dollars' conitnues in the same mode but this time with guitar and a super heavy synth line pushing the driving force along and finally Soft Rocks grab a hold of '10 Dollars' and turn it into a John Carpenter-esque electro groover.

Sitting To Win
Review: limited 12" 180g records, single press, individually numbered, no repress, no digital with reDICKulous artwork hand 'crafted' by the man behind the label.
Tusk says, "The title track from TW15 was conceived after a particular heavy Tusk Wax label party at Renate in Berlin. I went back to my old pal PORK INTL's place for a bit of drunk studio time and told him all about the living legend that is Gizzy the Fox. A couple of bottles of wine later and I was telling the story to a microphone and we were writing an oddity of a track. If you have had the pleasure to meet Gizzy and spend time in Renate you might understand the lyrics, if not, they'll probably just sound like the rantings of a drunk man, funny that."

Dance Shout
Review: A home strictly for the tuffest cuts from the tuffest guy since last year, the Tuff Cutt label returns with a sixth grip of edits from Australia's finest exponent, Late Nite Tuff Guy. One of the country's true pioneers of house and techno under his previous House Master Cam guise, Carmelo Bianchetti has enjoyed a second wind as edit machine Late Nite Tuff Guy. Any jobbing selector that dips between house and disco will find these four cuts more than useful, featuring perfectly calibrated revisions of Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Revelations and The Jacksons. The latter take on "Shake Your Body (To The Ground)" is guaranteed to rescue any dancefloor.

That's The Way
Nothing Can Keep From U
Number 1
Review: Nearly 12 months on from the release of the first sneaky Soul Cut 12", Late Night Tuff Guy delivers the follow-up. Like its' predecessor, Soul Cut #02 features a range of tracks that variously blur the boundaries between re-edits, remixes, and sample-heavy original productions. While "Number 1" offers an attractive, seductive scalpel rearrangement of a typically stuttering and synth-laden '80s soul/boogie jam, opener "That's The Way" is an enveloping deep house jam with a pleasingly metronomic, head-nodding pulse. As for "Nothing Can Keep", it sounds like a subtly housed-up rework of sumptuous disco-soul classic. As usual, it's impeccably produced.

Hanging Out (7:51)
Machine 16 (6:23)
Aperol Sunset (5:05)
Review: Proper party music from two of the most trusted names in the game. Paradise Row is a brand new label and production outlet for both long-standing pillars of the modern disco community, and each of these three launch tracks tip nods right back to the roots. From the brazen piano slapping of "Hanging Out" via the shiny guitar, chugging synth bass and dubbed out vocal tactics of "Machine 16" via the early Chicagoisms-meet-Balearic -guitar-twangs of "Aperol Sunset", there's no fronting or pretention here; just lush floor-focused music that is designed to make you smile.

Review: DC archival masters Peoples Potential Unlimited first shone the light on Dwight Sykes and his Jahari project on the must grip Situations cassette late last year, revealing the work of a key player in Michigan's underground boogie scene. Those selectors out there without the means to play tapes in a club setting will no doubt be very thankful to PPU for this 12" that brings together some unreleased demo cuts from Jahari along with a newly remastered version of the superb title track from that cassette. So up top you get two alternate takes on "Fire & Desire" with the studio version a real funk gem, whilst "Situations" sounds all the more sweet and soulful in newly remastered form.

Rockin' You Eternally (4:19)
Review: Released in celebration of Expansion's recent re-serving of two of Leon's early 80s albums - Rockin' You Eternally and Leon Ware - here's a delightful 45 that reminds us of his finest solo moments. "Why I Came To California" is a sun-kissed soul boogie groove with big horns and even bigger chorus. "Rockin' You Eternally" (which is, let's face it, one of the smoothest song titles to ever come from the 80s) showcases Leon's softer side. A ballad steeped in sentiment, play this loud enough and everyone in a five mile radius will stop and get smoochy.

Review: As if their recent album Beyond The Sun wasn't quite enough new material this year, Orgone return with two more brand new jams on this 7" for Colemine. "Strike" is a firing, sweaty Union cover that's focused on nothing but an unashamed party. "New You" is a softer, more sensual boogie number that oozes soaking wet guitar licks and honey-coated vocals throughout. Powerful contemporary funk from one of the most successful and prolific troupes in existence.

Review: Recloose's live band Star Blazers have been circulating this deeply trippy, cosmic-minded take on Midnight Express's 1983 disco hit "Danger Zone" for at least four years now... Whether it's taken this long to licence or just a straight up case of disco/editry longness we don't know, but it's finally available and it comes with a powerful, loose-beat shake-down by one of edit culture's genuine princes, Kon. Dangerous.
