Review: The key cut from "Love And Other Planets" gets the remix treatment from some great current talent. Being the most percussive and groove based track on the album, "Launch Yourself" lends itself perfectly to some inspired and diverse remixes. Current breakthrough hipsters Hot Chip deliver a skanking slow hip hop groove, Four Tet give it a mental acid house workhouse and upcoming Swedish Maestro Eriksen perhaps trumps the lot with a hyper r'n'b roller.

Monkey Riches (Teengirl Fantasy remix)
Review: As demonstrated in illustrious fashion on last year's Motion Sickness compilation, UK independent lable Domino are pretty handy when it comes to pairing their roster of artists with interesting remixes. Further evidence is in abundance on Monkey Been To Burntown, a collection of remixes from Animal Collective's last LP Centipede Hz. Gang Gang Dance, Teengirl Fantasy, Traxman and Shabazz Palaces are all involved and draw on the two tracks from that LP ("Monkey Riches" and "New Town Burnout") which influenced the amusing title of this EP. The results are as diverse as you'd expect from such a cast with Traxman's relentless take on "Monkey Riches" the stand out version.

Bridge To Quiet (10:14)
Review: The traditional album and EP formats have been on the wane for many years now - we don't consume music in the same was as we once did, that's for true. But in the era of quarantines, forgetting what month it is (let alone the day), and endless attempts to stay entertained, those frameworks make even less sense. Or at least that's what Animal Collective seem to think.

So while this can be filed under Extended Play, it's actually a more complex work befitting out time. Wildly experimental, think a jam session painted in psychedelic hues, where rhythms and ideas converge in a strange, thick soup-like arrangement that evolves, reinvents itself and - perhaps most importantly - keeps ears glued to the speaker for its duration. You'll need to go a long way to find a better source of aural pleasure right now.

Defeat (22:02)
The Challenge (live edit) (9:32)
Review: Defeat is a 22-minute new mega-single by Animal Collective, who by now should need no introduction (but for the rookies, we'll indulge one anyway) as the paradigm-breaking experimental pop band and formed in 1999. 'Defeat' is divided into two parts. The first is a beatless, coming-of-age pop seance, spanning surreal harmonia, whirling organelles and beatless spirallings, lyrically centring on the theme of overcoming adolescence. Part two is far darker, concerning the implicit alienation of a mother restlessly searching for her daughter in a lost dystopia, while horrific, tremolo'ing cellos play out in bad-trip horror flick fashion. Recorded with producer Russell Elevado, violinist Samara Lubelski, cellist Leila Bordreuil, and saxophonist Ben Chapoteau-Katz, it's certain to sate fans of the Collective, who remain committed to an ever-chameleonic bravado.

Sutphin Boulevard (Bicep remix)
The Complete Knock (Bottin mix)
Review: Round two of remixes to accompany the return of Devonte Hynes under his new musical endeavour Blood Orange and further evidence that Domino employ a crack team of scene observers to inform their remix commissioning. Whereas the first release saw In Flagranti and Krystal Klear tackle tracks from the forthcoming Coastal Grooves, everyone's favourite Venetian Bottin shares duties with the fully flexing Irish duo Bicep. The horror disco don calls shotgun with a suitably analogue filled freakout of "The Complete Knock" which keeps the percussive leanings to a minimum to allow the ankle hugging bass and multiple arpeggiated synth directions space to shine. On the flip, Bicep serve up a further taste of their burgeoning production chops, tackling "Sutphin Boulevard" and serving up a sleazy low slung cosmic jam perfectly suited for the sweaty basement spaces the duo spend the early hours of most weekends in.

Review: Seminal UK punk band Buzzcocks had a mega first run of success before a near decade long hiatus in the 90s and then a welcome return. 'Running Free' comes form that first chapter - 1980, to be precise, and is a much sought after new wave and rock blend written by Steve Diggle. It's a raw, high energy sound with punchy drum funk and squealing melodic leads. This limited 7" is backed with 'What Do You Know?', a rabble-rousing anthem with walls of sleazy guitar and wild vocals.

Review: "It’s Getting Light Outside" is the Hove groups most vibrant, accessible releases to date. Rolling in on a tom-tom pulse that might have suited the Shangri-Las, strings that are part-Elgar, part-Bollywood, and an upbeat lyric about enjoying an old friend's company this is the new single from Clearlake. All The Same (3:00)
Land Before Time (2:09)
Review: Fat Dog make a riveting return to the spotlight with new single 'All The Same'. Following up their 2023 debut 'King Of The Slugs', their latest track is a hardcore stadium-crusher, hadron-colliding motifs of coldwave, EBM and anthem punk for an electronic statement reminiscent of Scalping or Yard Act, but to an end all of their own fashioning. It's no wonder this cold-punk five-piece group of lads are billed as "music to grow your hairline to"; despite the huge sonic histrionics present in their music, the track somehow manages to provoke the release of cortisol and oxytocin in the brain at the same time, nailing that ever so delicate blend of humour and tension.

Debbie Harry & Franz Ferdinand & LCD Soundsystem - "Live Alone" (Brennan Green remix)
Debbie Harry & Franz Ferdinand - "Live Alone" (dOP remix)
Review: Presumably done in an attempt to appease their legions of fans, last years Covers EP revealed Franz Ferdinand to be fans of a typically wide reaching range of music, with LCD Soundsystem, ESG, Debbie Harry, Peaches and The Magnetic Fields front man Stephin Merrit commissioned to cover their favourite tracks from the band's last LP. Whilst those fans still wait for new material from the indie arch dukes, Domino usher in this second round of remixes with enigmatic New Yorker Brennan Green and French act dOP complementing the work doing previously by Wild Geese and Comeme's Daniel Maloso. Whilst dOP opt for a stripped down minimalist revision of Debbie's take on "Live Alone" that showcases her iconic voice, it's all about the excellent Brennan Green version that merges both Debbie and LCD's covers together in his own inimitable dub laden style.

Review: Joe Goddard and New York based Amy Douglas's Hard Feelings collaboration has already had some fine remixes put out from Goddard himself and Maurice Fulton. Now it is the always innovative Sheffield artist Crooked Man who serves up two of his own new versions of 'Dangerous.' The first is a deep cut, low slung viber with steamy tropical drums and Douglas's scorching female vocal bringing the heat. The COVID rework then gets more dark and edgy, with sci fi sonics and a textural bassline bringing the goodness.

Open Eye Signal (Lord Of The Isles remix)
Review: "Open Eyes Signal" taken from Jon Hopkins' forthcoming Immunity album on Domino receives a healthy dose of remixes from Nosaj Thing, Happa and Lord Of The Isles. Perhaps the most exciting movement of the original track is the fast and rugged Keith Fullerton Whitman-like drum breakdown after a bent and twisted crescendo. The EP then moves nicely into Nosaj Thing's bass humming and bed slat percussive remix, while young nipper Happa keeps things typically rough and overdriven in his remix. Lord Of The Isles electro gurgling and synthy-bright remake takes the EP from 45rpm to 33rpm with an equally challenging, but accessible remix.

Collider (Pangaea remix)

Collider (Objekt remix)
Review: Jon Hopkins is a bit of a legend, really. He's contributed to works by artist as diverse as Brian Eno and Coldplay amongst others, while always continuing to push the boundaries with his own solo-work. This time all you techno freaks are in for a special treat because the Domino label has really pushed the buttons on this one. UK bass-filtered techno pioneers, Pangaea, Karenn and Objekt all put in a surprise appearance on remixing his infamous "Collider" track. In that line of order, The Hessle Audio co-founder goes straighter than usual thanks to a rickety 4/4 stomp that's nothing short of sublime and probably a pleasure to play out on the floor. Pariah and Blawan give us a taste of their Karenn project and as expected, they go in real hard without even any shred of mercy on the kicks, whilst Berlin-based Objekt rewires the original into a broken, nasty, ripping bundle of kicks and licks.

Dawn Chorus (3:23)
Heron (4:03)
Modern Driveway (4:06)
Wintergreen (3:21)
Review: Seven years after he gave us the spectacularly beautiful Asleep Versions, Jon Hopkins presents four minimal piano stunners to help us return to those half-awake moments of absolute bliss. The bit before the dark in the back of your eyes turns red and you realise it's going to be another 12 hours or so before you're climbing back into the sack and returning to a place where, let's face it, most of us are pretty happy.

In terms of the music itself, this is Hopkins and therefore you know the score in terms of vision. Opening on the tranquility of 'Heron', which sounds as though it was recorded by a lakeside in southern England complete with wildlife on tape, from here things only get more intoxicating, until the delicate pitter pattered notes of 'Wintergreen' close us out on a subtle but moving air.

Review: Given that Jon Hopkins' work has frequently been praised for its intricately layered electronic sounds, it's something of a surprise to see him release a mini album that was designed to be sparse, minimalistic and breathtakingly beautiful. As the title suggests, Piano Versions puts the musician's upright piano front and centre, with Hopkins delivering four stunning cover versions that radically redefine their source material for the Nils Frahm era. He first treats us to a beguiling, slow-motion interpretation of Thom Yorke's 'Dawn Chorus', where shifting piano motifs are joined by spinetingling ambient chords, before mixing twinkling solos and field recordings on a fine version of James Yorkston's 'Heron'. Luke Abbot cover 'Modern Driveway' is haunting and becalmed, while his take on Brian and Roger Eno's 'Wintergreen' is icy, mournful and stunningly emotive.

Review: Virtuoso musician Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens are a perfect compliment for each other on their new EP for Domino. Both are leaders in their field and used to exploring outside the usual lines, which is what they do here. "Luminous Spaces" was meant to be an Owens remix of a track from Hopkins' 2018 album SIngularity but instead she recorded new synths and vocals for it. The result is sparkling bit of melodic and astral techno that gets you lost in the lushness as you sink ever further into a trance. "Luminous Beings" is a deeper anymore thoughtful vision that makes a different but equally real impact.

Review: Recently premiered via a dizzying video recorded in their studio, Hot Chip's "Flutes" offers an insight into how their forthcoming album In Our Heads might unfold. The UK troupe may have a new label home in the shape of Domino Recordings, but this new environment doesn't signal the change in a reliable formula that's delivered so many iconic singles since they surfaced with the low key Down With Prince way back in 2003. Compositionally "Flutes" bears plenty of production nuances (wood block percussion and African vocals looped up form the intro) and there's a dewy eyed melodic sentimentality to how the track develops that's clearly influenced by Joe Goddard's recent bloke house endeavours as part of 2 Bears, though Alexis Taylor's falsetto dominates throughout.

Night & Day (Daphni mix)
Review: Those who couldn't face the hours of queuing on Record Store Day will be glad for a chance to own this absolutely stellar remix of Hot Chip's "Night & Day" from Dan 'Daphni' Snaith! While some of Hot Chip's side projects are risible at best, you can't deny the group know how to craft an infectious electronic pop track that also lends itself to a multitude of remix possibilities and this Daphni remix is up there with the Alkan, Fulton and Soulwax efforts. This remix casts Daphni at his most eminently danceable without losing sight of those production intricacies that set him apart, smartly referencing two classic eras of Belgium in 80s EBM (not EDM) and 90s techno like R&S used to do. A delightfully playful production fills the expanses around the rubber band bassline with all manner of loose drum fills and snatches of Joe and Alexis' vocals put through the reverb chamber. One of the remixes of the year without a doubt and wait for those final few minutes!

Maurice Fulton, Erol Alkan, Supermayer, Daphni, Audion, and Four Tet are amongst some of the high profile names to refix the Chippers for the floor. Ahead of their latest long player, Keiran Hebden (as Percussions) and Hot Chip's own Joe Goddard rewire two cuts on this limited white label 12". Unsurprisingly, the Percussions remix of "Need You Know" is a deep swung affair with plenty of low key UKG flair to it, whilst Goddard turns in a mutant disco dub version of "Huarache Lights" that has a touch of vintage Chicken Lips to it. Plenty of rolling breaks too.

Review: The lead single from Hot Chip's latest album gets the bumper double-pack remix treatment, with the original coming on strong in a Human League style synth-pop stormer. Joe Goddard's dub mix keeps the poppy tones, while Todd Terje keeps the romance high on his arpeggio-laden version. James Zabiela opts for a spacious tech house jam with a sprinkling of Chicago attitude over it, Mickey Moonlight flies in a light and breezy funk overdub, but it's left to Ossie to bring the real excitement as he chops into a delirious house cut heavy on the edit and even heavier on the funk.

Review: Whilst the return of Junior Boys will always be a welcome sight, especially when they are ploughing the sort of Canadian slant on Down With Prince era Hot Chip demonstrated on "You'll Improve Me", this twelve inch is all about the Caribou remix. This year has seen Dan Snaith deliver countless memorable dancefloor moments under both the established Caribou alias and the more recent Daphni, and this latest effort is right up there with his best. Naturally epic in execution yet organic in it's construction, Caribou's arrangement rises gradually from the glitchy beginnings into a full blown behemoth tinged with 2 step undertones - it essentially sounds like something few other producers would attempt with any degree of success.

Junior Boys - "Like A Child" (Carl Craig remix)
Blood Orange - "Champagne Coast" (Mike Simonetti remix)
Review: Remixers must jump at the chance to work with a Junior Boys vocal and this time around it's Carl Craig who has caught the bouquet. CC works the "Like A Child" vocal to perfection, pitching it alongside harmonious synths, a body moving bass line and subtle percussion. Mike Simonetti hits up some indie dance vibes in his remix to Blood Orange's "Champagne Coast" as a walking bass line embraces washed-out vocals and shimmering synths.

Kindling For The Master (Polmo Polpo remix)
Review: The original 'Kindling For The Master' came from the acclaimed Stephen Malkmus album 'Face The Truth'. The guys at Domino thought that the Arthur Russell-esque bubblings of the song would suit their more disco-minded remix friends. They have pulled together an A-list of remixers, the Norwegian dance god Prins Thomas in his Major Swellings guise; the analogue psych-freak of The Emperor Machine; modern pop group Hot Chip; and the crazed sounds of Canadian Sandro Perri aka Polmo Polpo. The mixes have been picking up fans across the dance spectrum, including Mylo, Erol Alkan, Jonnie Wilkes (Optimo), FC Kahuna & Unabombers.

Evil Eye ( (Todd Terje extended mix)
Stand On The Horizon (Todd Terje extended mix)
Review: A collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Todd Terje? Not the most obvious of partnerships, but it certainly works. Franz Ferdinand's post-punk tendencies get extended and polished with Nordic cosmic charm and the result are two timeless, dubbed out exercises in deep funk. "Evil Eye" looks up to the sky with euphoric stomps and wistful synth licks while "Stand On The Horizon" cuts loose with more of an angular swagger. A really interesting departure for Franz Ferdinand, Todd Terje and Domino.

Review: 'Hi' is a single that perfectly encapsulates Psapp's bric a brac music. A key turns, door shuts, and then a rhythm track emerges from what appears to be a painstakingly assembled selection of pots and pans. It's the sound of a toy box tumbling down the stairs and yet it evolves miraculously into an addictive Latin groove.

Silver Spell (JD Twitch Optimo remix vocal)
Silver Spell (JD Twitch Optimo remix dub)
Silver Spell (Andy Blake Haunted Fairground remix)
Review: With Optimo's JD Twitch winning plaudits for his production duties at the helm of Sons & Daughters recent album Mirror Mirror, it makes sense for the man to provide one of his typically raucous remixes for this brilliant remix package. Those who have heard his incredible remix of Factory Floor will be right at home here, with a remix that stays just the right side of industrial, with white noise snares and pulsating bass propelling the track forward like a rave juggernaut. Although you wouldn't see these sounds being the most appropriate compliment to the Scottish band, the desperate, shouty vocals work a treat (though a dub version is provided). As if this record couldn't get any better, the B-Side is given over to a full 12-minute "Haunted Fairground" remix from World Unknown's Andy Blake. Operating just over 100bpm, its ghostly vocal cries and noisy sonics are the perfect accompaniment to its slow creaks, all leading into an eerie synth wormhole which sounds like a possessed merry-go round.

Orion (Emperor Machine remix)
Orion (Umberto remix)
Orion (Wrong Island remix)
Review: The latest batch of remixes to accompany Sons & Daughters second album, the JD Twitch produced Mirror-Mirror, offers further proof that someone at Domino Records knows their onions when it comes to commissioning producers for such endeavours. The last time round Twitch himself and Andy Blake offered up some decidedly epic takes on "Silver Spell" and DC Recordings veteran analogue noodler The Emperor Machine adopts a similarly expansive poise in tackling "Orion". Thundering into life via a typically strident motorik thump, Meecham deftly turns the screw on oscillating patterns of delay laden synths that intertwine with the jagged guitar and infectious vocal refrain with typical aplomb. This expansive trudge through modern psychedelia is complemented by a more restrained yet quite hypnotic rendition from Not Not Fun's resident Giallo dabbler Umberto, whilst fellow Glaswegians Wrong Island deliver a zombified Moroder revision that takes a fair while to achieve take off but is quite stunning in full flight.

Circle Square Triangle (Spank Rock remix)
Review: Genre-mashing remix of Test Icicles' biggest tune by XXXchange from hot Philly electro-rappers Spank Rock. Available on a one-sided limited edition 7" single. Upon its release towards the end of 2005, 'Circle Square Triangle' with its demented, energy-fuelled three minutes of madness cemented the word of mouth buzz. With obsessive legions of fans, pin-up looks, genre-defying genius and the aura of genuine stars, they burned brightly, but burnt out all too soon. Now we are left devoid of the wonderful world of Rory, Sam and Dev, but take solace in this devilish new remix of 'Circle Square Triangle' by another of the most refreshing and exciting bands of 2006 - Spank Rock. Their producer XXXchange has fired in a noised-up dancefloor version, the rasping vocals providing the meeting point of an assault from all angles, bolting rave synths and breakbeats on to the Pantera-meets Beastie Boys blueprint. Limited edition, one sided 7" single, featuring an etching by Rory from the band.

Review: The Isle of Wight has always had a pretty solid musical heritage, whether that's bands like Champs and Level 42, or major events such as Bestival and - of course - the Isle of Wight Festival. Now we have Wet Leg to add to that, or at least at the moment it looks like we will based on this, their debut single, which is about as cool and compelling as they come.

Of course, it's really just post punk, and we've certainly been here before on a number of occasions. There's the propellant rhythm, largely centred on forward motion bassline, and subtly complex drum beat driving the motor forward. But then there's a real understated, hushed delivery to the vocals that's both affected and pretty darn sexy, placing this in that difficult to reach category of rock music that sounds both committed and nonchalant, in the best possible way.

Review: This lo-fi songwriter has emerged from Philadelphia to make an impressive seven albums in only five years, yet 'Beach Music' appears to be the point whereby his unusual and beguiling skills make a lurch for the mainstream, and it's not hard to see why. The otherworldly, melancholic dreamstates of this album are always buoyed as much by infectious melody as by off-kilter experimentation, summoning a strangely engaging landscape in which the pixie-ish songwriting of Devendra Banhart , the off-kilter stylistics of Pavement and the soundscapes of Talk Talk can co-exist. A record of understated slacker charm and rare magic.

Review: If you're new to the Alex Giannascoli's world then make yourself comfortable - chances are, like us, you'll be here for a while. There are so many tangents, threads and stylistic shifts of shape it's possible to dive into his back catalogue and spend years never getting bored. It's now far quicker to understand what we're talking about, though, thanks to his latest album. There are multiple personalities at play here than you'd think could be coherent, but coherent this record is. Opener "Walk Away" sounds like an overview of the whole thing - growing from desperate cry into a grandiose, captivating thing of real beauty via reversed-out backing track and looped lyrics. All very Beta Band. From there we're locked-in, through the shimmering melodies of "Taking" to "Sugar"'s deep, tense atmospheric crescendos and vocoders. Ending on the stunning brass-accented blues rock of "SugarHouse (Live)", it's as complete a record as you could ask for.
