Review: A brand new studio recording of the now live smash "Leave Before The Lights Come On" shows Alex Turner and gang further honing their songwriting craft with a track which could well turn out to be one of their finest.

  1. Evil Eye ( (Todd Terje extended mix)
  2. Stand On The Horizon (Todd Terje extended mix)
Review: A collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Todd Terje? Not the most obvious of partnerships, but it certainly works. Franz Ferdinand's post-punk tendencies get extended and polished with Nordic cosmic charm and the result are two timeless, dubbed out exercises in deep funk. "Evil Eye" looks up to the sky with euphoric stomps and wistful synth licks while "Stand On The Horizon" cuts loose with more of an angular swagger. A really interesting departure for Franz Ferdinand, Todd Terje and Domino.

Review: The Philadelphian Alex Giannascoli has managed to hammer out eight solo albums in less than seven years, and one would be forgiven for assuming he's confused quality with quantity, were it not for the fact that 'Rocket' is unquestionably his most coherent, most memorable and most diverse work yet - replete with the same bleary-eyed charm that has always characterised this amiable slacker's work, yet with sharply constructed songs that bear the stylistic wanders from bucolic folk-pop to Elliott Smith-style angst to Beck-style bewilderment with ease. A piece de resistance from an increasingly fascinating ingenue.

Review: Over the course of their lengthy career, Animal Collective have put out a steady stream of albums that veer between experimental, post-rock soundscapes and skewed, left-of-centre indie-pop. Tangerine Reef, their eleventh and latest set, sees them back in experimental mode, delivering a range of fluid, liquid soundscapes inspired by their work with art-science filmmakers Coral Morphologic. All of the album's music was written to soundtrack a film by the latter duo, which can be watched in full on Animal Collective's website. Aurally, the album is indicative of the slowly shifting visuals - built around time-lapse style footage of coral growing - and tends towards the dreamy, otherworldly and drowsy.

Review: Katie Stelmanis, the spectrally-voiced and ferociously-talented figure behind maverick electro-pop outfit Austra, set herself the not inconsiderable target of setting out 'a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia' with this third album, yet against all odds she's done a sterling job of marrying the icy binary chill of technology with a very human frailty to emerge with a defiant and emotionally affecting statement of intent. Indelible melody and Stelmanis' extraordinary tones may dominate, yet the sonic landscapes here - equally bracing and beatific - have the rare effect of making the listener hopeful for what 2017 has in store.

Review: The Animal Collective fold can never be seen too far off from each another and with Dave Portner's Avery Tare project delivering a new full length that makes two individual releases from the nebulous group in as many months. With obvious references to Yellow Submarine and 60s/70s psychedelica to be found on "Cows On Hourglass Pond" there's also a route into a alternate sub-pop universe that shares a world one part Postal Service one part Warp Records influences. And fun fact: Dave Portner recorded this album at Laughing Gas Studio in North Carolina on a Tascam 48 half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine, the very same one used for Animal Collective's "Sung Tongs".

Review: There's no denying Domino know how to knock 'em down hard. Having already delivered long players from Cat Power, Bob Moses and Villagers just this year alone, they are now turning to Devonte Hynes who is no stranger to the label either. Negro Swan provides the London artist with his fourth studio album which in large draws from the lost souls of '90s pop. It's hard not to hear Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and R&B four pieces all at once in tracks like "Saint", and even "Charcoal Baby", while there's even suggestion of Will Powers' spoken charm in the words to "Family". More Contemporary touches of genre are there in the emotional, beat pop of tracks like "Chewing Gum" and "Nappy Wonder" without forgetting the tropes of neo soul in "Holy Will". A grand album wrapped up in the angel wings of Blood Orange's queer poetic.

Review: It's now been ten years since the world first became aware of Dev Hynes, yet through humble beginnings in Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion, it seems very much like this last decade has been a journey in the direction of this moment. With 'Freetown Sound' he makes his mark firmly as a modern-day auteur whose co-ordinates can be found somewhere between the funk-pop midas touch of Prince and the firebrand iconoclasm of Kendrick Lamar. A dizzying array of styles can be found in the album's compelling meld of the personal and political, yet with as much melodic richness and musical invention to be found here as confrontational food-for-thought, this is a stridently modern and multi-faceted joy.

Review: Three years on from the release of their well-received debut album, Days Gone By, former Scissor and Thread duo Bob Moses serve up their sophomore full-length excursion. It's another confident and hugely atmospheric excursion, all sold, with the Vancouver duo once again mixing and matching elements of dusty deep house, yearning indie rock and the kind of melancholic synth-pop beauty that was once a hallmark of fellow Canadians Junior Boys. Highlights aren't hard to come by throughout, from the heart-aching vocal harmonies, bittersweet piano and bubbling deep synth-pop electronics of opener "Heaven Only Knows", to the softly spun haziness and poignant melodies of "Enough To Believe", via the lilting, guitar-flecked Balearic pop confidence of "Back Down".

Review: This Essex four-piece are purveyors of a stylish and succinct brand of guitar-driven indie rock that nods to the like of Royal Blood's heavy riffing and The Dandy Warhols' arch pop tunesmithery, arriving at a black leather jacket racket that makes its presence felt with hooks and swagger, arriving at a continuum that unites Britpop vim and vigour with a more twenty-first century brand of attack. The Bohicas style themselves as 'The kind of S-t that Marv from Sin City would listen to', and indeed the thuggish efficiency of 'The Making Of' is redolent of a band who have their sights set on mainstream glory and aren't ashamed to admit it.

Review: Buzzcocks may have become known as purveyors of a marriage of the energetically youthful and the poppily addictive, yet their original incarnation - with cadaverous malcontent Howard Devoto at the helm - was a far more murky and spiky proposition. This live record, compromising early punk rock blueprints that would end up on the legendary Spiral Scratch EP as well as previously bootleg-only efforts that chronicle not only a little-known Captain Beefheart influence but a tinny, rough-hewn and thoroughly addictive sound that's the very essence of punk rock - one that sounds no less vital four decades on.

Chan Marshall's latest album, six years from her last, provides her debut on Domino, bringing with it three defining aspects, most notably a collaboration with Lana Del Rey on title track "Woman". A Rihanna cover version of "Stay" also makes an appearance mid-way through while tinges of auto-tune inside "Horizon" only add to her continuous extension of folky, blues & roots Americana.

Domino reintroduce Liverpool's cherished post-punk pop experimentalists Clinic to a new audience after seven years away from the studio, with this return LP said to reference a long-forgotten 1970s ITV variety show: Wheeltappers and Shunters. With drum machines, guitars, synths and a flurry of other experimentations and hypnotic, minimalistic grooves painting some alternative Wizard of OZ imagery, highlights include the offbeat, psychedelic surf punk of "Rubber Bullets" to the undeniably phat bassline and catchy vocals of "Mirage". Think Alan Vega and Martin Rev meets Ray Manzarek and a haunted vision of '70s psych rock. A feeling that you've probably not experienced in some time, if ever.

Review: Also a member of Real Estate, Ducktails mainman Matt Mondanile explores a more dreamlike and impressionistic mindset with Ducktails; despite their being initially co-opted into the journo-created world of 'hypnagogic pop', Ducktails have always been a band with a distinctly indie mindset, beaming post-C86 guitar chime through a prism of summery abstraction to create a radiant wash of sound as melancholic as it is beguiling. 'St. Catherine' forms by far the most assured and well-crafted statement this winning and winsome talent has created thus far; leaving generic tags behind, this is simply a collection of irresistable songs rendered with soft-focus taste and heavy-lidded charm.

Review: Released back in 2003, Rounds was the third LP from Kieran Hebden as Four Tet and perhaps the first long player that widely established him as a pioneering voice within electronic music. Though it doesn't feel like a decade since it was released, Domino celebrate the album's tenth anniversary in requisite fashion here, reissuing it in double LP format and slipping in a CD of Four Tet performing live in Copenhagen in 2004. Listening back now, it's easy to understand why Rounds is viewed as an early classic in the Four Tet canon, transferring his love for free jazz records to a beat template that's more palatable on the ear (Fact pickers might want to know that Hebden recently revealed to Pitchfork the LP was made entirely from samples) "She Moves She" still sounds absolutely haunting too!

Review: Scottish indie stalwarts Franz Ferdinand thrust onto the scene back in 2004 seeking to antidote the then bad-boy aesthetic of groups like The Libertines with smart, suave 'music to dance to'. Fourteen years on and following a slight lineup change, their objective doesn't appear to have changed with their fifth album 'Always Ascending'. Produced by Philippe Zdar of famed Parisian duo Cassius - it's a slick, tight record that's doused in their trademark off-kilter panache. Over forty energetic minutes, there's a lot to dig into; the ballad 'The Academy Award' and art-pop oddball 'Huck & Jim' let Alex Kapranos' dry wit come to the fore, the infectious funk-channeling chorus on 'Finally' sounds like a dip into 60's pop, while 'Feel The Love Go' is vintage Franz Ferdinand. 'Always Ascending' sees Franz Ferdinand full of charm, reinvigorated, and perfectly comfortable in no longer needing to prove anything.

Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.

Review: Julia Holter herself describes this new album as "the cacophony of the mind in a melting world," and it provides the American singer, songwriter with her first studio album since 2015's Have You In My Wilderness. Aviary is an intrigue to say the least and it's hard not to feel as if a horror-thematic runs throughout its 11 tracks, with moments of temporary insanity and distress intertwining with hair-raising spots a ghostly allure, and it's as if any lightness in the album has had to pass its way through a thicket of darkness first. There's much dissonance to be heard here too but in a pleasantly unsettling way akin to listening to an orchestra tune itself, and with all the deep and meaningful aspects behind Holter's inspirations, it's a hell of a ride.

Review: We never quite know what to expect from leftfield explorer Jon Hopkins, but we know it will be worth a listen. Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmopsherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

Review: Having taken time out to travel the world and experience new things (including psychedelic substances in California), John Hopkins planned to make Singularity, his ninth album, "a sonic ecosystem that starts and ends on the same note". He soon got frustrated by these limitations, so instead just laid down a fluid and hazy album that combines his usual luscious, ambient electronics with a variety of sparse, heavy and off-kilter rhythms. While undeniably laidback in parts, the album also boasts a number of foreboding techno workouts and uses a wider palette of instrumental sounds than we've come to expect (including some fine strings and his own intricate piano playing). The resultant set is rather impressive, all told, and while not quite a "sonic ecosystem", it's certainly an enjoyable journey.

Review: Hot Chip continue to occupy a unique space in British music. Yet despite their standing as a bunch of polymaths just as at home with pure pop as experimental diversions, what continues to truly separate them from all or any contemporaries is a rich melancholy to their sound, and it's this which looms pleasantly large on 'Why Make Sense'. The songwriting of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard has never sounded sharper, not their beat-driven yet tastefully spare sound more addictive. Now as ever, no-one can reconcile human emotion and machine-like rhythm in quite the same fashion as this maverick outfit.

With vocoding effects layered over the sweet tone of Alexis Taylor's voice referencing all matter of contemporary and retro-active pop and trance sensibilities, this album once again sees Hot Chip at the front of pioneering, friendly and avant garde pop music. Produced by the late Philippe Zdar (one half of Cassius) - also responsible for applying award winning touches to albums by Phoenix and Cat Power, Domino is calling the record "a celebration of joy but recognises the struggle it can take to get to that point of happiness". Our tips: album opener "Melody Of Love" and the '80s trance-pop that is "Hungry Child".

Review: Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox has been one of the more prolific solo artists to come out of the Animal Collective fold. Buoys presents a second album on UK independent Domino and his sixth solo album overall offers something of a new direction. Made in co-production with Rusty Santos (from The Present) the pair have delivered a work routed in hip hop and beat-making inspirations taking Panda Bear's music into a dubby and bass music realm. At times reminiscent of Ed Banger & Mr. Oizo quirkiness, alongside a trademark guitar sound and vocals drenched in reverb, the dub culture influence mixed in with the folk, and pop abnormalities, prove there's a deep layer of experimentation to Panda Bear's music yet.

Review: Most widely known as the front man for '70s rock and roll outfit The Only Ones, Peter Perrett returns once again with Humanworld, his second album since signing to Domino. Perrett successfully resurfaced in 2017 with How The West Was Won, an album that saw him chart in the UK and star on BBC Newsnight. Humanworld, then, does its best again to dissect romance and politics with Perrett's trademark sense of sardonic wit and wry humour. "I'm fully aware there are a lot of people who never even thought I'd get to make another album, let alone two, in such a short time," Perrett has been quoted saying, and with a production credit going to Peter's son Jamie who contributed to "Master Of Destruction", the album rejoices in one's ability to defy the odds. For fans of Dylan, Velvet Underground and Nick Cave for sure.

Review: Over the past 15 years of releasing records it's been a rare sighting to see Paul Webb's music as Rustin Man not up and alongside his partner in sound, Portishead singer Beth Gibbons. With a rich history of putting out music as the bass player in Talk Talk, Drift Code for Domino presents Webb with a fully loaded debut solo album. There's plenty of blues and jazzed laced throughout the LP to be appreciated alongside country western motifs that make you want to fashion yourself an underbite and chew on a some wheat grass. Slightly gospel, wavering croons and storytelling are to be heard amidst the charming clunky-clink of a salon's piano keys rattled in a room of smokey vocals. Something to be savoured.

The LP, said to be inspired in large by Bruce Vs Chocolate Cake from the 1996 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda, sees SASAMI turn in a variety of solo, synthy and sultry numbers, running a gauntlet between subtle punk, electronic pop, and funky, danceable New York indie. "Morning Comes" is perhaps the best example of the latter, sharing a sweet cadence with Stereolab and Nurse With Wound's classic "Simple Headphone Mind". Killer reference. With the amount of uber cool solo vocalists out there, SASAMI's unpretentious debut adds a fresh minty breath to the mix.

Review: It's no mean feat to have made the first Welsh-language album to reach the UK Top 20, but that's just what Super Furry Animals did at the start of the millennium with 'Mwng', their fourth full-lengther. In some ways a reaction to their expensive and underperforming 1999 album 'Guerilla', this was recorded mostly live for only L6,000, and styled by frontman and mastermind Gruff Rhys as 'a stand against globalisation'. Yet all this would count for little were 'Mwng' not crammed full of the wistful, effortlessly melodious and emotionally resonant psych-pop gems that Rhys & co excel in, leading 'Mwng' to stand for manifold reasons as one of the most essential documents by a unique and treasured outfit.

Review: Long time member of Domino Records' Wild Beasts, Hayden Thorpe of the group now ventures out on his own with a debut album called "Diviner". Taking its reference points from minimal piano, 80s synth inspirations, and vocal intonations that sound like they land somewhere between James Blake and Hercules and Love Affair's Anohni, Thorpe's debut delivers a melancholic and poppy tribute to a sound that's full of introspection, expression and delicacy. With the album's approach to modern contemporary and classical rising to the fullest in its penultimate track, "Spherical Time", "Diviner" is both a journey through space as much as it is future pop, multi instrumentation and R&B.

Review: The skittering drums, sweet nihilistic croons and chiming melodies of Dublin three-piece Villagers make it six albums in eight years. It clearly remains, then, that they are sweethearts of the label, and they squeeze everyone's most trusted vital organ once more by romancing our chest plates with numbers like "Again" and "Fool". There are more experimental dream sequences to be heard in tracks like "Love Came With All That It Brings" though, but back on track you'll find the more feel good in "Real Go-Getter" and "Ada". But really it's about the gnarly synth jam that is this album's title track.
