Dance Now (7")

Funk
  1. Dance Now (3:43)
  2. Fade Away (feat Andy Cooper From Ugly Duckling) (2:59)
Review: Aside from releasing 2 albums for the imprint, Bristol's The Allergies have been a pillar of the Jalapeno label's success over the years, helping the label find its feet amid the ever-growing broken beat scene. The duo return to the catalogue with a classic helping of their very own breakbeat science, first up with the vocal-led charm of "Dance Now", a commercially-minded dancehall anthem that strays into pop and r&b with utter ease. On the flip, Andy Cooper features on the rap-pop hybrid vocals of "Fade Away", a feel-good party tune that is solely focused on getting you to move!

Funk
  1. Can't Keep Working This Hard (3:34)
  2. Run It Back (feat Andy Cooper) (3:07)
Review: Brand new funk from Bristol-based duo The Allergies, these two pant-swinging numbers mark the build up to their third album Steal The Show. As always, it's an all-out funkathon with full eyes on the party prize. "Can't Keep Working This Hard" jumps with a classic JB style break with some gutsy, raw soul vocal chops while "Run It Back" sees them tagging up with Andy Cooper once again with another classic spitfire rap jam that you know you'll be air rapping to within two or three listens. Yeah you will.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. 2 Much! (4:14)
  2. Special 45 (4:28)
Review: While the world may be going to hell in the proverbial handcart, The Allergies show no signs of losing their heads. Each successive single is on the money, offering a blend of funk-fuelled hip-hop party-starters and the kind of boom-bap beats that will get your head nodding quicker than a toy dog on a car dashboard. Their latest seven-inch is another incendiary affair, with A-side "2 Much!" featuring a near perfect blend of dancefloor-ready grooves, funky instrumentation and high-speed raps from regular mic man Andy Cooper. The latter also makes his presence felt on flipside "Special 45", a scratch-sporting head-nodder rich in atmospheric chords, simmering strings and oven-warm bass.

Funk
  1. Main Event (3:37)
  2. Buzzsaw (3:57)
Review: What a trip it's been for The Allergies; rolling from one killer album to the next, funk is flying from their HQ at a rate of knots. Here are two fine examples from their last LP Push On, both featuring their long-time friend and MC from Andy Cooper. Best known for his witty wordplay and character on Ugly Duckling records, here Andy gets to show off both sides to his expansive flow; "Main Event" is a chubby disco groove laced with mountains of funk, creating space for Andy's laidback-but-hypey charm. In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...

B Jam vs Enos Vol 2 (7" in limited hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: SCR 011. Rel: 07 Apr 14
Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Momentary
  2. The Time Has Come
Review: Smokecloud's Edinburgh correspondent B Jam returns with a second split release with Enos, vibing off that intersection between head nod heavy hip hop and slo mo disco. This ain't no hip house tho! Fans of golden era Fat City records will be all over this seven inch, especially opening cut "Momentary" that lays down a thick layer of dust over a deftly spliced vocal hook. B Side track "The Time Has Come" sounds sleepy but pay close attention and you'll realise all manner of intricate production trickery has gone into it's execution.

  1. You've Gotta Have Freedom (4:34)
  2. You've Gotta Have Freedom (instrumental) (4:35)
Review: Astonishingly, Boogaloo's re-make of Pharoah Sanders classic "You've Gotta Have Freedom" is now 24 years old. It was originally included on the B-side of the jazz-loving Swedish hip-hop outfit's 1995 EP "Humongous Steps (Back Down To London)", but arguably became more widely known when it was reissued by G.A.M.M. on 12" in 2003. Here it appears on 7" for the first time, with the band's vocal version - a positive, life-affirming delight that brilliantly flits between sections faithful to Sanders' version and rapped section underpinned by live hip-hop breaks - being accompanied by an equally impressive instrumental take. If it's not already in your collection, this edition should be an essential purchase.

  1. Nobody Wants To (3:09)
  2. Nobody Wants To (instrumental) (3:10)
Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.

Rock It Don't Stop (7" limited to 300 copies)

Funk
  1. Rock It Don't Stop (mix 1) (4:37)
  2. Rock It Don't Stop (mix 2) (4:21)
Review: Plenty of DJs have been spinning DJ Soopasoul's recent re-edit singles, while his outings for Jalepeno Records continue to set dancefloors alight. Rock It Don't Stop sees him in full cut-and-paste mode, serving up two variations on a break-propelled, party-starting theme. "Mix 1" of "Rock It Don't Stop" is a heady and intoxicating affair, with a familiar vocal refrain and party-hearty raps rising above a Shaft-tastic backing track seemingly crafted using elements from about ten different records. On "Mix 2", Soopasoul pushes the boat out even further, clashing and colliding familiar basslines, guitar riffs and Supersonic Force vocals with sweaty new drum solos and the heaviest backing breaks known to man. If anything, it's even more potent than the A-side... and that's saying something.

  1. Parallel Universe (feat MC Sinnamon) (3:58)
  2. Wat That Thong (3:18)
Review: "Parallel Universe" is The Dude Of Stratosphear's debut single, featuring the Thai rapper MC Sinnamon. Real name Jerome Doudet, he is a Swiss/French artist and bass player based in Bangkok, Thailand. A DJ, vinyl collector, musician, graphic designer and East Asian music connoisseur, The Dude Of Stratosphear was groomed in the vibrant alternative scene of Geneva, Switzerland. He presents here an cosmic trip between the heat of Chennai's bazaars and Bangkok's chaotic streets. Said to be based on a rare Indian library sample, "Wat That Tong" features samples of Thailand molam queen Yenjit Porntavi, plus a modern dub beat and Indian percussion.

  1. Ambition Addiction (2:00)
  2. Welcome (2:22)
  3. Funky Overdose (1:34)
Review: Soul auteur Jonathan Diggs Duke returns to one of his older EPs for a timely reissue. Originally released in 2015, just after his critically acclaimed debut album on Giles Peterson's Brownswood, the three tracks catch Diggs at his most flighty and free-thinking; "Ambition Addiction" jumps and rolls like a tightly coiled jazz spring before hurling us into the deep harmonic soulful blue of "Welcome" and "Funky Overdose" lives up to its name with its off beat magic, tightly plucked guitar and staccato vocals. Addictive.

  1. Morena (4:02)
  2. The Vibes (feat Ephniko) (3:55)
Review: Afro-Carribean Latin fusionists Empresarios have been doing their thing with modest success since the turn of the decade, serving up albums and singles that cleverly combine elements of cumbia, reggae, salsa, hip-hop, dub and house. Here they appear on 7" for the very first time, serving up two typically steamy slabs of ear-pleasing dancefloor fusion for the Virginia-based Boogieburg imprint. While stoned Latin hip-hop flipside "The Vibes" is undoubtedly a cheeky, cheery and quietly impressive affair, it's A-side "Morena" that hits home hardest. Sitting somewhere between electro-cumbia, salsa and skanking Latin pop, it's a full-force blast of sunshine that will sound particularly potent at outdoor parties in the summer months ahead.

  1. Let Go (feat Kaneko Takumi From Cro-Magnon)
  2. Pilot (3:10)
Review: Sample-digging beat-maker DJ Mitsu The Beats has been churning out blazed grooves and hazy, head-nodding workouts for well over 15 years. You'll find a fine example of his woozy, laidback and emotion-rich approach on the B-side of this Mukatsuku Records outing, which marks his first appearance on wax since 2016. While that track, "Pilot", is all warm Rhodes lines, toasty bass, Vibraphone flashes and crunchy MPC beats, it lets A-side "Let Go" shine - it was made in collaboration with Kaneko Takumi from Cro-Magnon and features spacey, Herbie Hancock style synthesizer lead lines stretching out over rich Fender Rhodes chords and shuffling, bossa nova-influenced beats. As played by DJ Spinna, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts),Marc Hype,The Allergies,Kid Koala ,Nancy Noise,Smoov etc

  4. Break (1:55)
Review: New Jersey multi-instrumentalist PVD comes correct with his first original pieces since 2015's Right On Time album. Four instrumentals built out of raw funk materials, his then/now signature of very tight jazz musicianship and programming is in full effect: the juicy JB drive and synth squiggles of "On The Good Foot", the dubby heads-down Fat Freddy's Drop style groove of "Forth & Back", the cadent horn layers of "Afro", the classic drum magic of "Break"... Van Dyke's consistency continues to reign supreme.

  1. The World Is Yours
  2. It's Simple
Review: 4 Hero don Mark Mac's side project Visioneers gets a worthy vinyl reissue as part of the 15 years of BBE celebrations with this limited edition 45. "The World Is Yours" is a take on the Nas classic which originally (in this version) came out in 2002 on the Omniverse label. The flipside "It's Simple" turned up on the Dirty Old Hip-Hop album for BBE four years later. The Omniverse label was highly collectable at the time, so this will be a welcome release for those who missed the original 45 or just love the 7 inch format. Both tracks are a sweet hip-hop tinged instrumental ride with nice keys and jazzy vibes. Hot!

OVERVIEW:
Since the late 80s Londoner Marc Mac has been converting audiences with his sophisticated take on urban soul. A hybrid concoction of breakbeat, nu-jazz, neo soul, drum and bass, and Hip Hop, its a polished sound plugged directly into the emotional highway of 21st century city living. Working under a variety of guises, his prodigious output includes his work as one half of 4hero, Visioneers, Natures Plan and Nu Era. In the late 90's Marc signed to Gilles Peterson's Talking Loud Records with 4hero. 4hero went on to produce two classic albums with Talkin Loud icluding the award winning "Two Pages" & "Creating Patterns" they then set up their own label where the critically acclaimed "Play With The Changes" was released. Somewhere in this timeline, between producing music for Jill Scott to Roy Ayers, Phonte to Terry Callier, Marc started another project called Visioneers releasing a set of limited 7" singles getting the attention from top eclectic DJ's including Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay. Visioneers was then picked up by BBE records who released the debut album "Dirty Old Hip Hop".
While recording this new Visioneers record, Mac began thinking how hip-hop had been a (sometimes invisible) guiding hand in his life. "The music, the fashion and culture. Although producing all kinds of music from jungle to jazz, hip-hop (or at least what is was) has always been a part of what I do in some strange and sometimes very subtle way." Documenting this influence on Hipology.org, his very own digital scrapbook (that has also spawned the record of the same title), it's easy to see the depth of Mac's appreciation of hip-hop. HIPOLOGY; the album includes hand picked guest John Robinson, Notes To Self, TRAC & Baron alongside some featured musicians Luke Parkhouse, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra & The Support Horns. The result is a real cool, funky eclectic mix of breaks, beats, soul/jazz and freaky squeaks a great follow up to the debut album.
