Roots/Lovers Rock
Champion (feat Black Thought - remix) (3:31)
Ugly Truth (feat Lee Scratch Perry - remix) (2:36)
Review: Hot on the heels of his rather good album Ekundayo - a brilliant set of reggae, dancehall and folk-infused lo-fi soul songs - Nottingham singer-songwriter Liam Bailey returns with two bona-fide legends in tow. The Roots member Black Thought guests on a bold new version of LP track 'Champion', in which he and Bailey's superb vocals ride a fuzzy, organ-rich riddim that sits somewhere between classic reggae and pitched-down dancehall. The Legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry lends his distinctive vocals to the fresh flipside version of 'The Ugly Truth', an intergalactic digi-dub-goes-soul affair that's every bit as awesome as the on-point A-side. Tip!

Wish I Didn't Miss You (remix) (4:17)
Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Looking Up To You (3:58)
(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

Now's The Time For Us (feat Tamika) (5:02)
Comin' Back For Your Lovin' (feat Ada Dyer) (4:37)
Review: Julian Jonah is a true veteran of British music, having caught the earliest wave of UK house music, worked with Billie Ray Martin, and even lent his chops to the mighty 187 Lockdown. On this single for Izipho Soul, he's tapping into a classic vein of late 80s-early 90s soul, with a smooth as silk production style and stunning vocal turns from Tamika (on 'Now's The Time For Us') and Ada Dyer (on 'Comin' Back For Your Lovin''). If you grew up through the original era this record will trigger all those nostalgic feelings for quintessential prime time radio soul, with all the feel-good factor in place on one handy little 7".

Nuthin' But A G Thang (3:03)
Review: The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band has become the latest jewel in the Big Crown. Lead by Bjorn Wagner, they have stopped several essential recordings not he label, all defined by their famous steel pan sound. Often they turn to covers of the classics such as they did back in March and this time around they take aim at the much loved and low slung hip-hop classic 'Nuthin' But A G Thang' by Dr Dre. In their hands it becomes something else entirely but still delightfully low slung and sleazy. This one is backed with 'How We Do' which is another loveably fresh sound.

Side A is his feel-heavy cult instrumental take on Ronnie Laws' disco classic "Always There" while Side B throws us into the heart of his 1979 album Bobo with gutsy raw soul power (and just a few cheeky funk slap bass twangs for good measure) Two stone cold classics together for the first time on 45.

Just Me & You (4:44)
Your Love Is My Desire (4:44)
Review: Having appeared on several EPs throughout the late '70s and early '80s on labels like Westbound and Capitol, most people think of Erasmus Hall as one person. Rather, they were actually a collective of artists that were given the name by grandmaster George Clinton of Parliament / P-Funk. This might not be immediately audible on the gentle waves of "Just Me & You", but the song does contain a certain air of oddity and conniving funkiness that rendered that period of disco just so damn enticing. The flip contains "Your Love Is My Desire", another gentle heart-warmer to stick on in those more intimate moments... What a delightful little 7"!

Review: Florence Adooni's relationship with Philophon goes back some time. She was the voice of Guy One's group and featured on his hit 'Estre' while she also provided vocals for Jimi Tenor's club classic 'Vocalize My Luv'. Under her own name, she has also dropped a series of top albums that have earned her the title of "the queen of Frafra-Gospel". This super sweet 45rpm typifies that sound with shakers and hand clapping, acoustic guitars and earthy drum sounds. 'Yinne' is upbeat and sunny and rich in melody and 'Fo Yelle' is much more heartfelt and introspective. Both are great.

Queen 16 Theme (3:00)
Review: Germany's Mighty Mocambos are one of the flagship funk outfits on the scene right now and this new 45rpm on Rocafort Records shows why. It was recorded live on tape during the Queen 16 B-Girl battle in Berlin back in 2022. Opener 'International Cypher' brings a fresh take on funk with oriental overtones thanks to an electric Phin, which is a Thai guitar, being heavily deployed throughout over bristling drums that are raw and hit hard. On the flip, 'Queen 16 Theme' is more lively and loose limbed with a jumble of drums and expressive horns leading the charge.

Review: It's a while since she left us but Amy Winehouse remains a towering presence in the jazz and soul world. Her voice cut through the ages and the emotion she put into her music will always be revenant. That's likely why Club 2022 has pressed up two of her standout singles to 7" for the first time. There is the breakout 'Back to Black' on one side and the sing-along classic 'Rehab' on the other, both of which are uplifting tunes with dark personal messages which spoke of the trial and tribulations of the much loved but trouble artist's short but accomplished life.

Review: There are a whole host of soul talents on display on this new and limited edition 7" from Big Crown. Lady Wray, Les Imprimes & Surprise Chef all combine their forces for the gorgeously lo-fi and authentic soul single that is 'Come On In.' It has heart-aching vocals and a slow, heavy beat that is raw as you like. Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Review: The brilliant Jimi Tenor is adored in the scene by those how know his music. For over 30 years now, his discography shows his work for him to be labeled a genius. 'My Mind' was a track that was included on his 1999 album Organism. This new version is more akin to his recent live performances of it across the world in recent tours. This version is a bit rawer but doesn't lose the smoothness of the original. A classic of his discography and a signature song of his concerts, you get a glimpse into what makes Jimi Tenor once of the most beloved personalities in electronic music history.

Review: The Sound of Thunder label is fast approaching its tenth release and just before that mini milestone it offers up a couple of sublime dub and roots cover versions of some classic tunes. Errol Dunkley is first up on this 45rpm and adds his own spin to 'You Are My Sunshine' which is deep and loved up, with yearning vocals and whimsical harmonica leads. Review: A couple of years ago, Max Stocklosa debuted the Trii Group project - albeit under the alternative TRjj moniker - via a couple of decent releases on STROOM. This limited 45 marks the first Trii Group outing of 2021 and was made in cahoots with Hipolito, a fellow Cologne-based artist who has previously contributed to Stocklosa's cassette-heavy TRii Musik label. A-side 'Circuit' is odd but rather good, offering a glorious mixture of tipsy, inebriated new age electronics, distant vocals and chiming melodies. 'Timer' retains the same reverb-laden vocal sound, this time placing Hipolito's vocals atop undulating, lo-fi machine drums and the kind of bubbly, alien-sounding modular melodies that were once a feature of compositions by the Radiophonic Workshop.

Nwomkro is an Ashanti style music that influenced Highlife, a style of music closely linked to Kumasi, Ghana's cultural capital and a city in the middle of the jungle. The pair link up with young highlife talents here and the results are pure, good time sounds that trill with energy, pickle rhythms and earthy percussion as well as some subtle synth work that brings a contemporary edge.

Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. Review: This latest single by anonymous, masked metal supergroup Ghost hears the band lay down a haunting, straight-up hard rock clanger, in support of the upcoming 2021 slasher film 'Halloween Kills'. 'Hunter's Moon' stops and starts between choral sections erratically, as though the musicians have synchronously taken the same brand of nightmare pill. "I'm dying to see you once agian" is the refrain, carefully double-entendring into deathly, mathy elysium. On the back, John Carpenter's new 'Halloween Kills' theme, a rerun of the '78 classic. It's just as fitting that both songs should be released on limited 7" clear, alabaster vinyl - the colour of blood-drained skin, or brittle ghost's bones.

A breezy and neon-lit boogie down affair from the late night that gives a brazen nod to the '80s, it is complemented on the B side by the romantic late '70s easy rock vibe of 'Tornerai' which is an Italian cover version of 'In your Eyes' by Badbadnotgood featuring Charlotte Day Wilson. His new single is said to be a teaser for a seance upcoming album and is another masterpiece from Frafra Gospe, a legend of this genre. The tunes from it have never reportedly been on 7" before, so the Athens of the North label boss made it his mission to right that wrong. This superb seven0=-inch single showcases two of the album's undoubted gems: the impeccable deep house soul of 'People Need People' - a wonderfully sun-soaked affair in which Petrella's impassioned vocals and vibraphone solos stretch out across a tactile groove - and the downtempo, spoken word-laden hip-hop/jazz fusion of 'The Higher Love'. The former goes first on 'Super Tuff Killer Tune' which is a spaced out, downbeat exploration of deep space with nice chord work and crisp hits. Either way, the tune was first put out in 1969 and is all about war veterans returning home from Vietnam only to find out their lady hadn't waited for them. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. A-side "Easy Does It", which was originally featured on 1978's In Tune album, features Hutch in full-on Curtis Mayfield mode, singing passionately over a jaunty, jazz-funk influenced backing track laden with swirling strings, choral backing vocals (think Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album) and Dexter Wansel style synthesizer solos. Featuring fine lead vocals from Kei Owada and plenty of the band's trademark electric piano solos, their take on the track is far more dancefloor focussed than Scott-Heron's original, with much more energetic drumming and fast-fingered bass guitar. Turn to the flip for their take on Jessica Lauren's acid-jazz era fusion classic 'Serengeti', which sees Nautilus add infectious, life-affirming Fender Rhodes solos to another killer jazz-funk groove.

Review: Leaf Dog & BVA (who is known as part of the Four Owls) are fierce lyricists and leaders of the UK school of rap. They both drop some real heat here over a compelling hip hop rhythm produced by DJ Jazz T. The three artists have all spent years laying it down in electric fashion at live shows and now come together to drop what is an instant modern classic. 'Da Tru Skool' has off-grid jazz chords and classic boom-bap drums with the vocal flows up top the icing on the cake. Artwork by Don Stilts makes this even more essential to pick up.

You & I (2:21)
Review: The world is full of heart-rendering electronic pop. So much so, you sometimes have to ask yourself if we can handle - or indeed actually need - any more. Rendered almost-immune to the emotionally barrage that seems to haunt our airwaves, playlists, and Made In Chelsea episodes, anyone who still has feelings in 2023 is doing well by all accounts.
Then along come Synthia, billed by the Big Crown label as a 'supergroup', comprising production don Leon 'El Michels Affair' Michels, and vocalist Claire Cottrill, AKA Clairo. Debate over what constitutes a 'group' aside, So Low, a startling double-A is enough to make you forget everything we just talked about, throw away the idea of overkill, and dive right in. As if born to score something cool, reflective, thought-proving and devastatingly romantic, fans of Electric Youth, Cocteau Twins and Almagris should be here already.

Super Star (2:54)
Super Star (part 2) (3:50)
Review: Miles Away Records are proud to introduce their latest single to land on the label: the cosmic soul gem 'Super Star' by Ruth Waters and the State Of Mind Show Band. Ruth 'Silky' Waters was best known for her two disco-infused albums Never Gonna Be The Same and Out In The Open, produced by the late, great John Davis. 'Super Star', however, was released on the tiny independent KMBA Recordings label in the late 1970s, and draws on the twin wells of modern soul and gospel, lending both a touch of cosmic goodness. On the flip, there's 'Super Star Pt.2', which plunges deeper into the cosmic essence of the track by way of both extended guitar and synth solos; both tracks are stupendios in their own rights, making this a hotly versatile release for a far-and-wide DJ demographic.

Freedom Song (3:29)
Freedom Song (version) (4:06)
Review: Two twinkly slices of roots reggae from the late 1970s: 'Freedom Song' and its version, by Tyrone Evans - a Jamaican singer who was part of the vocal group The Paragons - is a wonderfully lilting and politically-charged track. A plea for liberation and justice over a militant riddim with horns and keyboards, its star element is perhaps its whirling guitar hook, which sounds almost sitar-like in its pentatonic melody. Park Heights All Stars, helmed up by boss Delroy Francis, deliver the dub version, providing a remarkably different interpretation of the track, albeit one that is no less punchy and immediate. This is a reissue from the one-time prolific Park Heights Records, a New York-based label that was prolific in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Review: A fresh crock of reissued Wackie's material springs forth from the not-so-wacky US dub label, all in mixed sizes from 7" to 12". Complementing the latest reissue by Abbashantie and Neville & Jerry, this one's a 12" by Wayne Jarrett and Soul Syndicate, a deft Jamaican reggae singer and slick backing band respectively. First released in 1979, it's got two songs laid to groove: 'Moses' by Jarrett and its 'Version' by Soul Syndicate. Both are stomping roots reggae bits that praise the biblical prophet and leader of the Israelites in equally weighty fashion.

Review: Reggae mainstay Delroy Wilson dropped this easy soul skanker back in the mid-70s. Now the original Clocktower label reissues it again on a limited 7" as the OG has become hard to find and much coveted. It's a brilliantly laidback tune and warming organ chords at its core, lazy drum hits and fat bottom kick down below, all finished with the laissez vocal coolness of Delroy. Flip it over for an even more slowed down and sensuous rhythm version, but the a-side with its sweet vocal takes some beating if you ask us.

Review: Record Smith and Digikiller link up to start off a new series here that is focussed on underrated producer Lloydie Slim. They say lots of tunes are to come and this first one comes from Far I, whose first album the label has also reissued in the past. This rhythm was written at the same time and has never before been released. 'Blessed Is The Man' is sun torched island music with fat bass twangs and nice lumpy rhythm topped off with great vocal work. Super stuff for loud systems.

Review: Lloydie Slim produced arguable all of the best music made by Ronnie Davis. Here comes fine expand of that with a previously unreleased tune on the Records Smith label. 'Never Leave You' comes in two parts with lovely lazy rhythms and dangling, jangling guitars over warm bass. The vocals soar and the horns bring the vibes net to Ronnie's buttery smooth vocal work. On the flip is part 2, a more stripped back version that is a little heavier and fatter.

Review: Swiss record label Darker Shade Of Roots have got a crucial new roots offering on their hands here. Ras Ico & The Shades are in charge and showcase their authentic reggae sound which owes a lot to the classic sound of Jamaican. The earthen and dusty vibes of the slow motion drum swaggers and natty chords up top are pure bliss. The vocals bring extra soulful sounds and before long you'll have your heard lost right amongst them. 'The First Day' on the backside is another masterfully meandering riddim with louche drums and heady melodic leads.

Review: Armintha Williams is a Nashville-based singer with roots in gospel, but on this single for GE.D. Soul she's dealing in matters of the heart backed by a tight-as-you-like boogie groove. The dirty synth b-line brings the funk, but it's Armintha's heartache vocal over the top, doused in tasteful reverb, which forms the emotional centre of the tune, driven by Nick DeVan's powerhouse rhythm section. As well as the lead version there are alternative mixes including an instrumental, for those who prefer to zero in on the production.

Review: Ahemaa Nwomkro means queens of Nwomkro, an old Ashanti Musial style that was hugely influential in the early formation of genres like the Highlife take on Kumasi, which is the cultural capital of Ghana in the middle of the jungle. Those queens are Victoria Osei and Theresa Owusua and here they team up with young Highlife musicians generation Akule Pepe on guitar. He worked for many years with Highlife legend Alex Konadu and these songs here show just how well pure Nwomkro work with textbook Highlife.

Chazbo - "Holy Mountain" (dub) (3:42)
Review: Chazbo and Jah93 are two artists living in Japan who share a passion for dub; producer Chazbo has worked with the likes of Prince Alla, Earl 16 and Kenny Knots, while melodica maestro Jah93 enjoys wide renown for her band Dubdhizm. 'Holy Mountain' hears Chazbo remix one of Jah's original tracks originally composed way back in the day. It's a fresh new take: digi and bleep elements overlay a harmonious yet patient dub backing, with evident extra care to carve out an organic sound. Of course, it wouldn't be the same without Jah93's melodious melodica over Chazbo's efforts, which glides mutedly over both A and dub.

Review: It's five up for the Palmetto Street label and this one finds them turning to Ben Pirani & The Means Of Production who manage to again find new ground in this great EP. The lead single from the 7" is a soft and melancholic sad song with none other than Brian Jackson (who collaborated with Gil Scott Heron) playing the flute parts. He cuts through the smokey mood with daring harmonies while on the flip things get even more forceful with 'Something So Precious'. Pirani goes it alone on the vocals for this one while a strong quartert adds the sumptuous melodies.

Skyscrapers (5:28)
Review: If you've not heard 'Skyscrapers' yet, where have you been? First released digitally last year and accompanied by more remixes than we can count, the track is arguably Nina Kraviz's most accessible, radio-friendly release to date - a potential crossover anthem that's as cool as it is catchy. Now finally available on vinyl via this single-sided seven-inch, 'Skyscrapers' is a prime piece of what Kraftwerk would have called 'techno-pop', with the much-loved Russian producer's sweet vocals rising above a bed of ultra-crunchy, snare-heavy machine drums, dreamy Chris Lowe chords, gaseous pads and ear-catching lead lines. It's basically synth-pop, but it's classy and sonically deep enough to please all but the angriest underground techno purists.

Review: Cappo is one of Nottingham's finest and now he's back once again, this time with a drum heavy hip hop weapon that has been produced by Doctor Zygote and Jazz T. 'I Go Off' has hard bars and dark beats with a lingering and menacing sense of soul. As the dusty, stripped back beats set an imposing groove, Cappo flows over the top with great wordplay delivery in his inimitable Midlands twang. On the flip is an instrumental that hits hard, but it's the original a-side that you want here.
