You Keep Coming Back (3:15)
My Little Someone (4:16)
Review: 100% Pure Poison were formed in 1974 by nine American soldiers based in West Germany. During a period of leave, they popped down to Cannes in France to perform, were spotted by EMI Records, and were flown to London to record what turned out to be their only album, Coming Right At You. The record flopped at the time, but has since become sought-after amongst Northern Soul collectors. The two tracks here are taken from that set, and appear on 7" for the first time since the '70s. A-side "You Keep Coming Back" is a near perfect, heartfelt soul anthem- think eyes-closed vocals, sustained horns and Motown harmonies - while "My Little Someone" is a slower, more impassioned cut destined to soundtrack tender moments.

Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

The Man I Feel
Review: Emotional Rescue dig out a quintessential private press curio and give it a tasteful 7" release that should tickle all lovers of blue-eyed soul with a subtle electronic kink. There's a smooth pop nous at the heart of "Passion", but also a naivety in the production that hints at the bedroom studio roots of 4AM's limited forays into recorded work. There's space for Fairlight-esque stabs and something approaching an acid bassline, but it's all framed in a mellifluous slice of melodious groove. "The Man I Feel" takes the A side and steers it into playful instrumental territory to great effect, the consummate 80s dub out.

Terrorize My Heart (Tall Black Guy Bounce remix) (3:44)
Review: The faultless Big Crown label revisits one of its biggest hits from back in 2016. New York City-based collective 79.5 is made up of seven musicians and singers and their gorgeous 'Terrorize My Heart' 45rpm reached some heart aching disco highs. Now it comes with in two new forms - the disco dub with its seductive drums and bass and airy, soulful vocal, and a remix from hip hop royalty Tall Black Guy. He deconstructs the tune and rebuilds it as a smoky, jazz tinged slow motion hip hop beat. The chords are warm and cuddly, the vocal is more meandering but still acts as the perfect icing on a delicious cake.

Review: While many electronic artists operating in the underground would kick their catalogues off with some EPs here and there, Andy Brown, codename AB2088, preferred to drop two debut LPs before landing on Central Processing Unit with this mighty 10". Right from the start of "All The Eyes", you can hear that this dude likes to create music rather than effective tracks, with all sorts of deep and complex musical harmonies encircling the air above the tune's more straight-laced beat groove. Even on the flipside, namely through the excellent "TX0", you can hear a story being pieced together, a tense and energetic bundle of sounds yearning to explode out of the system. Deep, deep electro thrills for the lovers...

Review: Depending on where you stand, Virgil Abloh is either the ruiner of fashion, or its saviour. The Off-White founder doesn't exactly have a subtle style when it comes to his own brand, but that hasn't stopped him making it to the high profile position of artistic director at Louis Vuitton. He is also more and more involved with music on various levels and that now plays out with his new single with serpentwithfeet. It is presented here on both sides of this Sony 7" following his recent remix of Mercury Award winner Michael Kiwanuka's 'Solid Ground'.

Review: We all fondly remember Swedish pop group Ace of Base from school disco days back in the 90s. 'The Sign' was one of their biggest hits, reaching number two in the UK before spending a total of six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, as well as charting at number one in countries including but not limited to Australia, Canada, Germany and New Zealand. The bubbly, tropical and dub tinged europop tune also got a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. While it isn't going to be remembered as one of the greatest tunes ever, it sure is fun to hear it again

Review: A '68 Brunswick classic that's since been covered and sampled by many, Barbara earned her stripes as a backing vocalist on the legendary Chess Records. This, her sophomore single, brought her to the masses and has settled in many a digger's collection ever since. The slightly lesser known "Love Makes A Women" is equally as powerful, and comes with a rather funky swing. Fryers don't churn out represses like their peers... But when they do, they're gold.

Unreal Personality
Review: Veronica Vasicka's Minimal Wave label continue their experimentations with the 7" format here, issuing a one track release from obscure Dutch duo The Actor on a clear flexi-disc complemented by the usual array of attractive design trimmings. Formed of Breda based pair Marcel Reimer and Sander Horsthuis, The Actor emerged from the Dutch home taping scene in the early eighties inspired by the likes of DAF, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and Fad Gadget. Signed by cult Dutch cassette label Trumpett, The Actor released two albums on tape format with this 7" culling the lead track off their debut album Exploding View. Described by Minimal Wave as the archetypal The Actor song, "Unreal Personality" was recorded using an array of primitive synth and drum machines and Reimar's sarcastic tone sounds all the better for being remastered from it's original analogue source tape.

After a busy decade working with the likes of Sly and Robbie, they all went on to work on separate solo careers but not before laying down some heavy jams. "Righteous Kingdom" is one and is an earthy bit of slow motion lovers rock with super soulful and sweet vocals musing on the battle for survival laid over swaggering drums, with rousing flutes drifting off into a cloudless sky above.

Open Your Heart (part 1) (2:40)
Satisfactorize Your Mind (2:45)
Review: The work of obscure, conscious funk outfit Africano has previously proved popular with reissue labels, in part due to the rare nature of their original 1970s releases. This limited 7" single features two of their finest tracks: the fairly well known "Open Your Heart", and 1973's "Satisfactorize Your Mind". While the latter is a string-drenched treat that feels like a dustier, slightly more psychedelic take on the Philadelphia International sound, it's "Open Your Heart" that most impresses. Featuring urgent, passionate vocals, winding horn lines and a stomping funk-soul beat, it remains the outfit's finest moment bar none.

Zulu Walk (part 2 - instrumental) (3:43)
Review: If you missed this one when it first dropped in 2011, now's your chance to catch up on a serious slice of rootsy funk with some heavyweight players involved. Afrika Bambaatta teamed up with The Mighty Mocambos and Charlie Funk to record "Zulu Walk", and what a result. The groove is incredible, deep in the pocket and rolling forward with a mellow urgency that works for "Part 1" and the instrumental "Part 2" on the flip. King Kamonzi rides the beat on the A side in fine style, capturing a wild energy that wouldn't be out of place in the P-Funk pantheon. True-skool funk heads, don't sleep.

Poinciana (4:58)
Review: TRAMP Records continues to serve up tracks from "Live at Haight Levels", a rare 1960s recording of Bay Area stalwart Ulysses Crockett's little-known Afro-Cuban jazz band, Afro-Blue Persuasion. Both "Cuban Fantasy" and "Poinciana" have been edited to fit on a seven-inch, with the epic original versions naturally featuring in full-length form on the separately available two-part album. "Cuban Fantasy" is especially good, with wild flute solos and fluid piano motifs rising above a densely percussive Afro-Cuban groove. "Poinciana", meanwhile, is an altogether jauntier and breezier proposition rich in hot and heavy sax, Tito Puente style drums and more offbeat piano riffs.

Review: Edits don't get much more naked than this latest batch from the Afro Breaks camp. Both "Confusion" and "You" take an array of Fela ingredients and strip them right back to the bare carnal backbone. The results are super-spacious beat tracks coated in dubbed out flurries of activity. The lolloping bass and reverbed snare on "Confusion" will instantly hypnotise while the cut-strut guitar and percussive insistency on "You" will have hips shaking from the dancefloor right through to the smoking area. "Red Light District" is as hot and illicit as the title suggests thanks to its prominent drums and heated horn work. What begins as a pretty straight forward groove is gradually layered with more and more Manzarek-style freestyle organ slapping. Ahmed's "Aynotche Terabu" is backed by the Equators Band, and the man's voice rides like crispy waves over the dusty percussion and charging trumpets of the outfit; Beyene appears with a less moody but equally brilliant jazz-leaning piece named "Ene Negn Bay Manesh", bringing through the spirot of greats such as Mulatu and the rest of the African luminaries.

Their second release this month is a tasty hook up with AJ Franklin, UK Principal and Vin Gordon. "Where You Gonna Run To" is a popping dub fleshed out with cavernous drums and bass that sit together perfectly. Synth details and hits spit out and horns drift to sooth your soul. Say That You Love Me (Danny Krivit 7" edit - Francois K remix) (5:34)
Say That You Love Me (Danny Krivit 7" edit - AK remix) (5:46)
Review: Japanese singer-songwriter-producer Akemi Kakihara, better known as AK, is a huge star in her native country-where she's released 15 albums, many topping the charts, along with writing & producing for many other artists as well. Her first album featured a collaboration with close friend Brazilian pianist and composer Eumir Deodato-but she's probably most recognized internationally for Her composition "Say That You Love Me," originally a jazzy ballad, was remixed by Francois K and Eric Kupper in 2001 and released on New York label King Street Sounds. The remix soon became a staple at Body & Soul in both New York and Japan, ultimately topping the dance charts around the world and emerging as the top house anthem in Japan over the next decade-as well as becoming King Street Sounds' all time biggest seller. (The song wasn't the only success story to bloom from this project: visiting Body & Soul for the first time in 2001 to meet Francois K and see and hear the crowd's reaction to the remix, when she also met DJ and party co-founder Danny Krivit. A romance between them blossomed, they married in 2008, and continue to reside in NYC.)

With 7" vinyl singles currently enjoying a renaissance, Krivit suggested AK revisit the landmark track to do another re-work of "Say That You Love" for Most Excellent Unlimited, something noticeably different from the original. AK's new version of her signature tune retains her silky vocal refrain that first seduced listeners, but adds a bubbly keyboard melody and a propulsive snare kick that turns it into a dance floor stomper. Krivit then edited down her new production and the Francois K mix for the first time on 7" release; he felt the song's King Street hit remix arrangement was very strong, so he did his best to maintain it's hit arrangement within the restrictions of a 5:30 min format for the flip side of the single. The result is a must-own 7" that sounds both classic and contemporary at the same time.

This one, 'Beautiful You' is making its vinyl debut here and comes with strong messages of empowerment and affirmation. The lyrics and vocals are uplifting as is the music which comes in the form of a 7" edit by Body & Soul legend Danny Krivit' of GRAMMYr award-winner Hex Hector's Lush remix. Everything from the classic trumpet-led grooves to the cover art is authentically soul, a long stray away from the band's grunge beginnings. If there's one way to start a revolution in your city, it's to create an incredible new sound like this. Review: Aldous Harding, known to some as Hannah Sian Topp, might be New Zealand's answer to Cate le Bon, although we really don't like to draw reductive comparisons and consider everyone to be completely individual, even if they do both have a sweet and tender but unkept psychedelic atmosphere about their rock 'n' roll offerings. The kind of tracks that make you feel timeless, Harding is perhaps more gentile and less likely to explode into rugged riffs, but nevertheless the similarities in vocal tones are quite clear.

That's certainly no bad thing, as this single proves. Harding's voice is perfectly tempered, almost hushed, and yet only the strongest and most determined could even try to hear past it. Instrumentally, Old Peel is an infectious piece of work to say the least, the kind of thing you think you've heard before and yet are convinced you've actually heard very little like it.

Second time around for Ali B's Afika NX-sporting bomb 'Swing It', a weighty fusion of electro, rap and - whisper it quietly - electro-swing that first surfaced earlier this year. This edition doesn't boast the original, but instead a fresh rework from bootleg remix king Jim Sharp. His take is little less than a total re-imagining, with Afika NX's rap sounding deliciously laidback atop a boom-bap beat rich in woozy electric piano chords and sampled sax lines. Over on the flip, another vintage Ali B cut gets the remix treatment, as Utah Saints manbutt dons the Beatvandals alias to re-frame sleazy rap jam 'Music Saves Me' (featuring Jungle Brothers' Baby Bam) as a cheery slab of disco-boogie fun. Review: Jalapeno remains one of the hottest and most spicy labels out there for hip hop lovers, and now it is The Allergies who bring the heat on a new and limited edition 7". They kick this one off with 'Stanky Funk' which features Bootie Brown and brings some old school cool, plenty of retro organ chords and noodling basslines that will tie the dance floor in knots. 'Never Gonna Let Go' then ups the ante with even more raw and hard hitting breaks next to big vocals and driving brass.

Review: Dot Allison debuted in 1999 with her Aftergow album and ever since has kept fans old and new enthralled with her voice. Heart-Shaped Scars was a follow-up 12 years later than won plenty of plaudits and now the label it came on serve up this bonus 7" with two new cuts. There is the rather bleakly but beautifully alluring 'Ghost Orchid' and then 'Love Died in our Arms' which is a reference to a past musical life in which Dot made trip hop. It also comes with a download code to unlock a third and final bonus cut named 'Heart-Shaped Scar.'

Alchemy (dub - Ojah Refix) (2:51)
Review: Alchemy Dubs pull out all the stops to celebrate release number 10 as they present - for the first time ever on vinyl - the aptly named "Alchemy" by UK dub legends Alpha & Omega. It's a flabby number that stomps and swings like an elephant. Distant vocals and intoxicating melodies weave in and out as the beat plumps on and takes you every step of the way with it. Ojah sorts out a heavyweight dub refix on the flip to make this an essential little purchase.

Shashamani (dub) (3:49)
Review: Alpha and Omega's 'Shashamani' was first featured on a 1996 long player called Voice in the Wilderness. It's an ice-cold dub with a fathom-deep low end and hypnotic if muted lead melody that snakes its way between the heavy drums. It's a cavernous atmosphere that sounds as fresh now as ever. It has never been backed with this unheard B-side dub before, either, so is an extra special one to add to the racks as that dub goes extra melon-twisting with more punch in the kicks and hissing hi-hats leaving long tails.

Cemalim (4:03)
Vay Dunya (4:21)
Review: More from Turkish pysch-funk revivalists Altin Gun, whose fuzzy, intoxicating and floor-friendly sound is deeply rooted in 1970s once obscure Occidental fusions of space-rock, psychedelia and black American dance music. A side "Cemalim" is a brilliant example of their trademark sound, with dreamy female vocals and deep space Moog solos rising above a fuzzy, fast-paced funk groove. Their love of vintage synthesizers is explored further on wild and trippy B-side "Vay Dunya". The track's wonderful blend of heavy rock energy, intergalactic synth solos and reverb-drenched Turkish vocals is exceedingly potent, even by their own high standards.

When You Go (That's When You'll Know) (3:34)
Over & Over (3:47)
Review: Some seriously dewy-eyed revivalist southern soul here from Daptone's superb Penrose sub-label. It comes courtesy of The Altons, a blue-eyed soul band from Maryland whose debut album on Mango Hill, In The Meantime, is well worth your attention. Neither of these two slow and emotive songs are featured on that set, but they'd fit right in. A-side 'When You Go (That's When You Know)' is impressively heartfelt and languid, with jazzy guitars, sustained Hammond organ chords and a laidback, early '6-s style soul groove underpinning sugary group harmony and lead vocals. Flipside 'Over & Over' is a slow and heart-wrenching break up song that's arguably even more impactful. Impressive stuff.

Tangled Up In You (3:39)
Soon Enough (3:58)
Review: Sitting back to back, with their silhouettes filtered through lamplight and street smoke, neo-soul duo The Altons have returned with two slow, gushing jams. Adjacent to the local jazz club's neon signage comes the blissful harmonies of Bryan Ponce and Adriana Flores on 'Tangled Up In You', a hurtful song that carries with it a tinge of psych rock. The B-side duet, 'Soon Enough', sparsely fuses traditional jazz instruments for a lovers' reunion song. For all the soft-hearted among us, don't miss this one.

Cry For Me (2:16)
Review: The Altons turn up the heat with another platter produced by the Inland Empire's own, Bosco Mann. A soulful duet at its core, 'Float' finds the group exploring new realms of pop excellence. The sophisticated arrangement and instrumentation gives the tune a cinematic feel that builds to a crescendo of psychedelic, swirling of strings - immersing the listener in a wash of Morricone-tinged euphoria. A track that wouldn't be out of place in the next 007 blockbuster. On the flip is "Cry for Me", a latin-tinged mover featuring Adriana Flores on lead vocal. Her pleading, soulful delivery gives the bouncy, hook-laden tune a seriousness that's simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking.

Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

Review: Soul fans rejoice because this is a truly cockle-warming gem that gets a much-anticipated reissue on Tramp. Amazin' Five's 'Only With You' pairs gorgeous and clean vocals with golden chords and backing trumpets that add warmth and luxury. It is a truly breezy cut that will work as well on dark winter nights as it will bright sunny afternoons and it comes with a Russian vocal as well as the English a-side. The Russian one appears on the flip and brings a more international feel. This is another fine move from Germany's Tramp label.

Amazones De Guinee - "Samba" (4:53)
Moussa Doumbia - "Samba" (5:28)
Review: Mr Bongo kickstarts a new Afro 45s series with serious intention; all-girl troupe from Guinea Amazones De Guinee take the lead with a live recording from Paris, 1983. Taken from their Au Coeur De Paris album, it's the perfect example of a live recording with the balance of musicianship and crowd participation precision tuned. Flip for the previously rare 1980 recording by Ivory Coast's Moussa Doumbia whose smoky vocals and JB-level shrieks hit hard over a clam-tight Afrofunk rhythm. What a way to start a new series.

Review: Back in 2017, mystery producer The Ambientist offered up two thrillingly retro-futurist EPs that effortlessly joined the dots between ambient, IDM, proto-jungle, ambient techno and dream house. Here, he or she offers up a selection of reworks of tracks from those now sought-after EPs. A-side "10 (Calming Rain For Deep Sleep Edit)" is wonderful: a slow-burn, deep ambient techno number rich in ghostly chords and hushed spoken word samples that reminded us of Biosphere's early work. Over on the flip, label stalwart Rising Sun re-imagines "4 (A Sign Of True Friendship Mix)" as a soul-flecked slab of gently pulsing breakbeat house that's deeper than a Scottish loch and twice as picturesque. "Bonus", a two-minute shuffle through hazy, breakbeat-fired deep house grooves, is also solid.

Review: It's good to have this one available again. Dorothy Moore's 1976 soul classic, featuring vocals from Taka Boom, Chaka Khan & Mark Stevens, 'Misty Blue' became an Ibiza chill-out anthem in 2002. As 'Misti Blu' it got high-profile plays by Mary Anne Hobbs, Pete Tong and Mixmaster Morris and even David Mancuso charted in his end-of-year highlights. Now the sundown gem gets reissued here on a tidy 7" as a superb rework from Claude Money. The crooning vocals remain the highlight with sultry trumpets and lavish downtempo rhythms. What's more, we're told that a new live disco and house version are also to come this year.

Tell Me, Tell Me!
Review: Russian funk alert! Following in the footsteps of fellow country funkers STiX and The Soul Surfers, DJ Anatoly Ice and veteran songstress Dariya deliver two impeccable jams that sizzle with a fuzzy air of 60s nostalgia. Dariya's vocal delivery is crisp, clear and decidedly sexy as she dips into her mother tongue for very brief respites. With punctuated pianos, big swinging drums and a horn ensemble that's tighter than an austerity budget, this is an exemplary lesson in funk.

Keepin On (3:53)
Review: The Ancient Cosmonauts are a horn-tooting band from - we think - Germany, whose horn-heavy take on funk, soul and acid jazz fusion somehow manages to be both rooted in the past and pleasingly fresh. This first single on their self-styled "DIY label" Cosmonaut Records is well worth checking. A-side "More Mess On My Thing" is driven forwards by laidback, loose-limbed drumming, rubbery bass guitar, layered hand percussion, a call-to-party female vocal and the twin attractions or rising horn lines and snaking sax solos. "Keepin' On" explores similar sonic territory, with the band providing more ear-catching horn lines and an urgent lead vocal that will worm its way into your subconscious in no time at all.
