Funk
  1. The Beast
  2. Road Song
Review: Their first new material since their 2011 self-titled album, highly acclaimed Brooklyn funk septet let loose with two exemplary lessons in bright, tight timeless funk. "The Beast" is just one long head-nodding groove that oozes world class horn work. As we hit the sax solo there's a vague waft of Afrofunk but played a much slower, sedate tempo. "Road Song" is a little more upbeat but, thanks to some lone piano work, there's a touch of poignancy about the vibe. Think Booker T & MGs.

Drum And Bass
  1. Oh Diggity (3:44)
  2. Love Gets Sweeter (vs The dancefloor Outlaws) (5:07)
Review: The clue's in the title... Two anonymous stitch-ups that will tear-up your floor with serious badness. "Oh Diggity" takes TC's version of Bashmore and takes it for a romantic walk down Blackstreet while "Love Gets Sweeter" busses up a bit of Mr Quaye with a sugar-sweet jungle feel that's perfect for the summer ahead. Subtle as a hammer.

Soul
  1. Mr Magic (Fryers edit) (4:23)
  2. Talking About My Baby (3:34)
Review: John Heartsman and Circles are precisely the sort of fellas you'd expect to see land on Athens Of The North, the most recent boogie-jazz reissuers to come out of the US of A. This material from the late 70's is like gold on the second hand market, and more like a mirage given the fact that original copies are her impossible to come by. Anyhow, this is proper soul-jazz goodness at its best, so if that's your thing, then get on it real fast. "Mr Magic" appears here as an edit from Fryers, but it's not million miles away from the original, its subtle organs still intact and that catch, funky swing still very much at the core of the tune. Heard the Idris Muhammad version? Check it to compare. "Talking About My Baby" is looser, more soulful affair with a faster tempo and Heartsman's rugged vocals in its underbelly. Quality.

Deep House
  1. Voodoo (5:09)
  2. Moondub (4:29)
Review: Leo Gunn is an artist that has been truly dedicated to the cause of Deep Explorer. To date all the artist's music has come to light on Dubbyman's bastion of Spanish deep house, and it's no wonder when you listen to the illustrious tones of his productions. Ahead of a new album, this 7" of mystery and wonder starts off in the utterly enchanting world of "Voodoo", a spaced out lullaby of expressive pads and the softest house tick buffeting along the aqueous sounds. There's a slight change of mood on the flip as "Moondub" lives up to its name with a spacious soundworld marked out by echoing piano notes and a rock solid bassline, but still that inimitable Deep Explorer mood prevails.
