Do What You Wanna Do (3:29)
Your Last Song (5:11)
Review: Jonny Benavidez is the soul star we can't get enough of right now and thankfully he is back with another doozy with Cold Diamond & Mink, whose mesmeric grooves make for another sublime voyage. This new 7" is a double-sider that has tunes taken from the My Echo, Shadow and Me album and 'Do What You Wanna Do,' is a lovely dancer with buttery top lines from Benavidez, rolling grooves, backing vox and big horns embellishing it yet further. On the B-side is 'Your Last Song,' a more bluesy and downtempo sound that is packed with powerful melodies that you wont't be able to stop humming.

Cold Diamond & Mink - "Let's Get Together" (instrumental) (4:22)
Review: We just love hearing new soul and funk. Sure, a rare single from the 60s or 70s goes a long way in satisfying our needs, but how good is it to hear NEW music!? That's why we rate Finland's Timmion imprint so highly; they always come through with the goods, and there isn't a single EP they've put out that hasn't interested us... or flown off our shelves! This time, Jonny Benavidez, Cold Diamond and Mink team up for the absolute sexiness that is "Let's Get Together", a seductive soul ballad that is bound to lit up the room instantly! The instrumental is rather fine, too.

Playing The Fool (4:29)
Review: Timmion is one of our favourite labels out of anywhere, let alone Finland. 'here comes another golden soul cut from the frozen north with Jonny Benavidez back in collaboration with the ever delightful grooves of Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side is a heart melting soul ballad in the form of 'My Echo, Shadow and Me' which manages to pay homage to the classics while bringing something new. On the flip is a more dreamy and mid tempo soul sound in the Mandells'esque 'Playing The Fool' which carries you away to a better place.

Cold Diamond & Mink - "Tell Me That You Love Me" (instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Coming through on Timmion's offshoot Stylart Records, Jonny Benavidez Cold Diamond and Mink have exactly what it takes to soothe those winter blues with a little bit of their own bluesy spirit. To be exact, this is pure-class soul music from the deepest part of their hearts, but there is a strong element of melancholia at its core, and that's what gives "Tell Me That You Love Me" its sparkle and mystique. Mink's voice is like velvet on this beautiful recording, and even the instrumental sounds like the sort of gem that everyone from Floating Points to Theo Parrish could dig. New music, too!

This Love (part 2) (3:06)
Review: When the seasoned singer and musician Bobby Oroza lay his gentle voice on tape at the Timmion Labs a year ago, nobody knew what was about to happen. The beat ballad "This Love" on the Stylart sublabel flew out and the first pressing was sold out within a week. A DJ issue was rumored to be sold for a hundred dollars at an auction even before the record was released. The hype was real. For fans of Oroza's extremely personal style, he has new tracks in the pipeline and according to the label they are 'potent'. Keep your ear tuned to Timmion and Stylart, the official home of post-millennial soul sounds.

Queen Of Soul (part 1) (3:56)
Queen Of Soul (part 2) (3:55)
Review: Finland's Timmion Records should, by now, be categorised as leaders in the leftfield soul game. Their catalogue contains a wealth of both old and new talents and, whenever we see that famous 'TRI' sign hit our shelves, we just know we're in for the good shit. Thankfully, this new collaboration by the mysterious Cold Diamond and Mink is right up there with the rest of the label's wacky, soulful mind-melters, except that here we head into even deeper quarters. The 7" contains two parts of "Queen Of Soul", a rough, wavy piece of lo-fi strumming that uses its wonderfully exchoing guitars to guide the listener into a state of total psychedelia. We love it, and we suggest you to cop one now before it pops up for the triple the price in a decade's time. Bliss.

Review: Some four years after making his debut with crossover soul gem 'Love Can Last Forever' - the first release on occasional Timmion Records offshoot Styleart, no less -Fred (real name Frederik Lof) finally returns for round two. This time, he's joined forces with Timmion's in-house revivalist 60s soul and funk band, Cold Diamond & Mink, who return to base following a surprise outing on San Francisco's Ubiqiuty Records. A-side 'Sweet Thing' lives up to its title, with Lof's slick, high-register vocals rising above a deliciously positive backing track rich in hazy horns, sweeping strings, and a nostalgic soul groove. Over on the flip you'll find instrumental number 'My Baby's Outta Sight', which appears to be a languid, vocal-free take on the sublime A-side.

Review: Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators return to Timmion with a pair of brand-new soul scorchers, and this ain't no reissue business. For real. As per usual, the imprint know exactly where to source the very best in the contemporary gear while everyone else is looking to the 70s for that adrenaline rush. As it turns out, this is some marvellously constructed soul music, right from the heart and soul, with "Cold Turkey Last Time" and "Trackin' Down" containing all the elements of fine ballads that are both future-proof and utterly stand-out. Message Of Love (4:01)
Review: Finnish revivalist funk combo the Soul Investigators are no strangers to collaboration, having previously provided backing for Nicole Willis, Myron and Ernie Hawks. Here, they once again join forces with the latter for two more chunks of instrumental funk and soul goodness. A-side "Scorpio Walk" is the kind of cut that should come with its own named dance; a shuffling, mid-tempo funk affair that layers Spaghetti Western guitar solos and fluttering flute lines over a backing track rich in flanged guitar licks, bustling bass guitar and on-point drum breaks. Flipside "Message of Love" is an altogether deeper and more dewy-eyed affair, with woozy backing vocals and electric piano solos rising above a shuffling groove.

Review: Back in 2017, we aptly described the Jukka Eskola Soul Trio as "the Finnish horn boss's newest project". The combo is now not so new, of course, but the trumpeter and flugelhorn player's outfit remains a go-to source for quality jazz and jazz-funk material. There's more than a little Latin flavour to be found on "Tiny B", a Hammond-powered shuffler rich in South American drum rhythms and the kind of sticky trumpet solos that were once a hallmark of Herb Alpert's records. Flipside "Stick Of A Branch" is a far more up-tempo affair, with Eskola's punchy playing riding fluid vibraphone motifs and floor-rocking jazz drums.

The Soul Trio is his latest project, having sparked the fire last year on We Jazz. The fire now heating up with every toot, this Timmion 45" is a jazz funk inferno. Review: Like Daptone house band the Dap-Kings, Timmion's go-to combo Cold Diamond and Mink are absolute masters at delivering revivalist soul and funk cuts that offer authentically old sounds and fuzzy production with new beats, grooves and melodies. They're at it again here with regular collaborator Carlton Jumel Smith. As usual, you'll find the full version on the A, with Smith delivering a raw, impassioned lead vocal above the Finnish band's languid, sweet, sixties-style soul backing track. Here the little-known vocalist takes a different approach, re-casting himself as a throaty, James Brown influenced '70s soul singer. He's at his heartfelt, full-throttle best on "Can't Love You Any More", a deliciously heavy and authentic chunk of Southern-fried deep soul complete with additional falsetto parts from fellow singer Pratt. The key to the track's success is the fantastic backing provided by Cold Diamond & Mink. Proof is provided on the flip via the band's effortlessly good instrumental take.

It goes without saying that their latest hook-up, "I'd Better", is another future soul classic. Review: "Remember Me" was one of the most effervescent and up-tempo moments on Carlton Jumel Smith's 2019 album "1634 Lexington Avenue", so it's terrific to see Timmion giving the song a seven-inch single release. Backed by in-house Timmion band Cold Diamond & Mink, New York's modern "Mr Soul" delivers a scintillating lead vocal above a rousing 1960s soul instrumental laden with killer bass, sustained horns and bustling breakbeats. It's from that set that his latest single is taken. Review: After her debut Timmion single 'Don't Believe You Like That', Emilia Sisco is back in the fold with a double-sider of the highest order. Emilia seems to feel right at home with the material that she cooks up with Cold Diamond & Mink, filling both songs to the brim with soul. Despite its title, 'Trouble' strolls along with a delicately sweet mid-tempo groove and a nicely abundant arrangement, each of Emilia's lyrical calls getting a response from the background harmonizers and the band steady tightening up while the song builds towards its conclusion. The B-side slows things down to a lush southern soul drawl, coming off like a classy forgotten Hi session.

Emilia Sisco - "Don't Believe You Like That" (with Cold Diamond & Mink) (4:47)
Cold Diamond & Mink - "Don't Believe You Like That" (instrumental) (4:45)
Review: Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink have provided stellar backing for all manner of artists over the years, including vocal combo Thee Baby Cuffs, funk veteran Willie West and, most recently, sometime soulful house singer Carlton Jumel Smith. They're at it again here, this time providing the musical foundation for debutant Emilia Sisco. Her vocals - sweet, occasionally strong, always passionate - take center stage on "Don't Believe You Like That", a Dap Kings style revivalist heartfelt and emotional soul number. Turn to the flip to revel in Cold Diamond & Mink's simple, effective and dustily produced backing track, which remains the beating heart of the whole shebang.

Make It Mellow (part 1)
Make It Mellow (part 2)
Review: The Soul Investigators from Finland are one of the most dynamic, talented and exiting groups to have hit the specialist funk scene in the past decade. Since 2001 the outfit have had releases on their own and been joined by a variety of vocalists including Myron And E, Big Joe Louis and Herb Johnson. On this new dinked 45 from Timmion the band get together for what sounds like an instrumental alternative rendition of the funk classic ''Tighten Up'', and trust us when we say that there's nothing 'Make it Mellow' about it! Throbbing bass pulsates through the track whilst fatback drums with great brass stabs work their magic. Part 2 is more of the same but with separate trumpet and bubblin' organ solos.

Vulture's Prayer (with Jimi Tenor - instrumental) (4:15)
Bad Viberations (with Jimi Tenor - instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Taking time out from Nicole Willis's strict schedule, Finland's most famous funk troupe The Soul Investigators hook up with flautist Jimi Tenor for two soulful, imagination-grabbing instrumentals. "Vulture's Prayer" is a softer, more languishing, reflective piece where the wah wah guitars shimmer and ripple underneath a thoughtful - but never overcooked - flute line. Hungry for more bite? Flip for "Bad Vibrations". A deep funk cut with a rhythm that's built up around a crisply plucked guitar line allowing Jimi to blow his thing as wildly as he likes.

Vulture's Prayer (4:13)
Bad Vibrations (4:19)
Review: Featuring members of Timmion's latest house band, Cold Diamond & Mink, but pre-dating the foundation of that combo by many years, The Soul Investigators are Finland's longest-serving soul band of note. The collective has been going since the mid 1990s and over the years has worked with all manner of neo-soul artists. Here they join forces with an old pal, eccentric lounge-jazz veteran Jimi Tenor, for two laidback soul instrumentals. This time round, there's no singing from Tenor; instead, he delivers a couple of atmospheric, elongated flute solos. You'll find his distinctive work on both the atmospheric, vibraphone-sporting 'Vulture's Prayer', and 'Bad Vibrations', a funk-tinged slab of horizontal instrumental soul that's as breezy as an autumnal morning in Helsinki.

The Soul Investigators - "I Just Can't Leave You Alone" (feat Jimi Tenor - instrumental) (3:45)
Review: Long-serving New Orleans soul man Willie West has previous form when it comes to collaborating with The Soul Investigators, Finland's funkiest backing band. He's joined forces with them plenty of times over the years, though this is their first joint release for nearly two years. "I Just Can't Leave You Alone" is particularly sweet, with West's heart-felt vocal combining brilliantly with guest Jimi Tenor's drifting flute lines and the band's rich jazz guitars, fuzzy grooves and '60s style production. The sublime quality of their playing and production is even clearer on the accompanying Instrumental take.

Thee Baby Cuffs, Cold Diamond & Mink - "My My My Baby" (4:46)
Cold Diamond & Mink - "My My My Baby" (instrumental) (4:46)
Review: The latest hot-to-trot missive on Timmion subsidiary Stylart pairs the label's house band, Cold Diamond and Mink, with Thee Baby Cuffs, a three-part vocal harmony group from California whose only previous release was an ultra-limited seven-inch single last year. The group's classic-sounding vocals - reminiscent of famous male soul combos of the early 1960s - act as a focal point on the side A original version, though it's the studied retro brilliance of Cold Diamond and Mink's on point backing track that stands out. The band's authentic production - all rising horn lines, rich bass, loose-limbed drums and '60s style hard stereo separation - can be heard even more clearly on the fantastic flip-side instrumental take.

Review: Timmion is of course the label based in Finland that is right at the heart of the country's jazz scene. For this latest tidy 45rpm, they invite Thee Baby Cuffs and Cold Diamond & Mink to cook up a heartwarming bit of swinging soul and jazz. Reality Jonez, known for his falsetto on 'A Million Girls', is part of Thee Baby Cuffs for this one and tells a real love story here. The instrumentals are lovingly lazy, with languid sax and libidinous grooves sinking you in deep as the vocals drift up top. An instrumental is included on the flip side but it is the a-side that really leaves its mark.

Review: Willie West is a vital underdog of the New Orleans soul scene. He is cherished for his work with The Meters and Allen Toussaint but remains a low key talent. Thankfully he is still around and recently reappeared with a superbly raw, honest, painfully emotive sound that draws on personal topics for its lyrics. Add in his minor chords and gently rhythms and you have a gorgeous sound, as exemplified on this new 7" for Finnish label Timmion. Filled with artistry and emotion, these tunes were laid down when he visited the county for a live show and are as good as soul gets.

Review: Willie West is a rare treasure. He's an artist who has been making gorgeous soul music since the 1960s and who's never looked back. He's still making heart-breaking anthems in 2016, and this collaboration with The Soul Investigators band for Finland's Timmion imprint is as beautiful and moving as the material way back in the Detroit days. "After The Storm" is simply a magical piece of music, a bittersweet soul ballad that manages to bring the sadness out of the melancholia and deliver a powerful punch to the chest; West's own vocals are what tie the instruments together and immerse the listener like nothing else. There's an instrumental on the flip for the sample-junkies and for those who can't get enough of this powerful groove.

Tell Me When (We Can Start Our Love Thing Once Again)
It's All Because Of You
Review: Besides the re-release last year, Nicole and her Investigators have been pretty silent since 2005. One quick blast on this will suggest how nice it is to have them back. "Tell Me When" indicates an interesting development as Nicole shows her acid jazz roots with a brassy, minor-key arrangement and bold Wonder-like chorus. "It's All Because Of You", meanwhile, sees them tip a nod to their early material with a dusty soul number with dreamy organs and guitars that act as chez lounge for her laidback-but-searching vocals.

Review: Brand new music from Nicole Willis and her intrepid Soul Investigators, their first new material since 2013's Tortured Soul album, and its business as usual. "Paint Me In A Corner" is a lively strutting funk gem peppered with harmonies and driven by a strict, solid drum beat and subtle percussion. "Where Are You Now", meanwhile, is a slower, more heartfelt ballad with lush swooning horns that nestle Nicole's raw and heartfelt vocal imagery consummately.

Review: Unfettered soul from one of the most consistent, reliable and loveable soul acts in modern days. "One In A Million" rolls with a gossamer groove thanks to its light-touched Hammond bed, tight horns and even tighter guitars. As always, the real focus (unless you're dropping the instrumental) is Nicole. Honeyed vocals that can't be mistaken, she fronts the track with heartfelt sentiment and subtlety that's hard to find in many new singers. Yet another reason why their album Happiness In Every Style will be worth the wait.

Nicole Willis - "Where Are You Now?" (5:11)
Review: Last time we heard from Nicole Willis, she was making revivalist disco and boogie with Banda Palomita. As good as the resulting album was, it's nice to see Wilis re-unite with Timmion house band The Soul Investigators, a collective she has successfully worked with many times before. Their latest joint single, 'Paint Me In A Corner', is a classic-sounding affair, with Willis delivering strong, hooky vocals over a stomping, mid-sixties Detroit style soul beat and rousing horns. It comes backed with 'Where Are You Now', a slower, Hammond-rich affair in which Willis pines for a former lover. It's rather good, with an expertly emotive backing track, but it naturally lacks the dancefloor impact of the dynamite A-side.
