Church (Darkstarr Diskotek rub)
Church (Darkstarr Diskotek dub)
Review: Given the clubby, fun nature of their music, it's not surprising 2 Bears have become the most popular off shoot of the Hot Chip phenomenon. Joe Goddard's project with fellow larger than life scene stalwart Raf Daddy see their Southern Fried classic "Church" get the Darkstarr treatment. It's an all round classy release - with the typically on point production from DJ Cosmo and Ashley Beedle across the Rub and Dub versions more than matched by the presentation. This 10 inch has hand silk screen printed artwork and label courtesy of artist James Morrison and represents the final instalment in Bitches Brew series of highly limited ten inches. Musically our favourite is the Rub, simply because the live sounding deep bump is the perfect backing for the rising crescendo of chorus harmonies.

The Silence Of Winter
Review: Brad Peterson and Rai Scott aka 2Deepsoul go limited edition and hand numbered for their white coloured 10" Earth Energy Part 1 EP on Spanish label Minuedo. Bubbling and acid toned squiggles dance upon staccato hi-hats and choral melodies in the upbeat and sweat sounding house cut "Serenade". Analogue warmth is ever present throughout the "The Silence of Winter", as hypnotic leads and LFO infected synths influence serenely sung vocals and top end EQ twiddles. A collector's must have.

Encanto (4:40)
Review: Having soared us through the dense black marsh earlier this year, Portuguese deepsmith 3WA takes us through even swampier, intense territories with this Crucial debut. "Viagem" is like stepping into a deep boggy cave where the drips from the stalactites get heavier and the ground swallows you like quicksand. "Encanto" then hauls your keister out of there with insistent hang drum percussion and rolling kicks before blowing you dry with powerful flutes and pipes. Charmed.

Whale (4:16)
Review: Portugal's 3WA is next up on the long running UK label Boka on a special, limited edition 10" vinyl with a unique metallic sticker design. This outing follows big tunes for 3WA on the likes of Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone and serve sup more big bass drops and heavy rhythms. 'Sea Witch' is a cavernous tune with shards of lighting beaming down through it from above as flute leads hypnotise and the drums tumble ever further down below. 'Whale' then stutters on wobbly bass with watery chords up top adding to the sense of space.

Review: Foundation Audio team up two heavy hitters for this ode to heavy sound system music as a way of marking the label's 100th release. This limited edition hand-stamped 10" kicks off with the booming bass and snappy hits of 'Bumba' with its snaking leads and low end wub-wub recalling classic era dubstep. 'Poverty' then pairs some heavily treated vocals with glitchy, glassy sound effects, a rugged and weighty low end and plenty of futuristic and caustic textures. These are dread fuelled bombs designed to be played nice and loud.

Earshots (extended mix) (4:32)
Review: Sir Hiss and 4AM Kru set up a dialogue between London and Bristol, a stellar dialectic giving rise to a supreme form of lo-fi jungle. 'Earshots' samples a bhangra vocal cry, mixing it up with the scratchy factory movements of cut-throat jungular breaks. It marks a break from Sir Hiss' usual grime parlance, and adds to a refreshingly-named new series handled by their parent label Embrace The Real, called 'No More Mailouts', an explicit callout of PR in the electronic music industry which aims to lead by example. Power to em.

Life's A Killer (part 1 & 2) (9:49)
Review: Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence made some of the heaviest industrial music during the 80's, and certainly some of the best the UK has seen, under the name 5X0D. This 1982 reissue was way beyond its time back then, bringing together the energy and cutting edge of techno and acid together with the chilling ambience of early synth music by the likes of Kraftwerk and the rest of the German 70's lineage. Take away the vocals and "Negativ Terminal Data" literally sounds like an early Chicago experimentation by the house legends of the day. It's certainly a recommended title and a highlight for this week's digging selection.

Frutie Mango (Steve Frisco remix) (3:29)
Review: Monsieur Cedric's Serie Limited is back with some sexy house with a French touch, this time courtesy of Osaka based producer and DJ 99Letters who takes a break from releasing on his eponymous imprint. It is sombre and emotive deepness on offer here with dusty and smoky elements supported by glacial pads on the A side. On the flip things get a bit more hectic such as on the wild acid techno thump of "Bass Raw Bass (Monsieur Cedric Rave mix)" which is reminiscent of early nineties UK rave vibes but the Steve Frisco remix of "Fruity Mango" is an angular and disjointed remake with broken, rusty drum patterns soon getting a hip-hop groove happening behind its messy but captivating collage of samples.

This is the first new music from A Mountain of One in a decade and it marks the inaugural release on their new AMORE label. Review: 10 Seconds is a series of beat-driven vinyl releases from Canadian artist A Track. He is best known for being a part of the globe-trotting EDM circuit and has been for decades. He also runs his own Fools Gold label and puts out from time to time a series of beat experiments smashed out on his SP1200 drum machine. They're not big, they're not hard, they're not smart, but they are sure to be damn effective.

Review: A Track has been a big name in the EDM scene for well over a decade now. He is one of those DJs often in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll and plays on the largest stages. He also runs the fFools Gold label and occasionally puts out batches of gritty beats made on his trusty SP1200! This is a second such serving that finds him getting busy on the ol' drum machine, serving up the rawest of the raw cut-ups. These four jams are chunky 2-bit numbers that are fad frill and all about the body rocking beats.

Review: A 10" featuring the finest that highlife has to offer, Crentsil was a figurehead of Ghanian music during the 70s and 80s who was introduced to highlife music at the turn of the 90s - a combination of pop, jazz, disco, and funk. 'Obi Baa Wiase' and 'Sika Be Ba' are two tracks with a close-knit message of gratitude, hope and faith between them, with the former being the staple track of Crentsil's long career after being played at weddings, festivals, and live concerts by local bands. A pair of incredible tracks produced by Charles Amoah utilising limited equipment to create an authentic party atmosphere, jovial flutes and plucky strings are the accompaniment to A.B. Entsils's proclamation of joy - put this on at the party and the room are sure to start moving.

Do It (Mondo Disco edit)
Disco (U-Ka Balkantonic rework)
Review: Mondo Disco and U-Ka on one sexy 10"? Disco partnerships don't carry much more clout than this. Mondo's take on "Do It" is less of an edit and more of a complete deconstruction and rebuild; taking the catchy vocal refrain and building a head-bending contemporary groove around it, this will seduce any floor in its path. Meanwhile on the B we find U-Ka on glistening form as "Disco" unravels into a shiny, bright-tight guitar-heavy jam complete with big brash synth boogie charm. Both are absolutely stunning.

Which is a shame because there's a degree of class to the two untitled productions on this 10" that demands some recognition. Review: We're not sure who's behind the mysterious AC-EXP project, but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange, submerged house music he's been tickling discerning DJs with over the past few years. After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

Review: The wonderful Blind Jacks Journey return with their first 12" of 2015, and it sees the label return to a track from one of their very first releases in the shape of Acasual's "Spring Theory". A highlight of Dream House Volume 1.3, the German's production is given the royal remix treatment with his highly regarded compatriot, the hero from Heidelberg, Move D, first up. Moufang's unmistakable sense of deepness adds a whole new dimension to "Spring Theory", and results in another gorgeous Move D production. On the B side it's Luv Jam lending his hand this time, on more of a lo-fi version with a bouncy bassline, dreamy, floating strings and a murmuring vocal melody.

Review: The Studio Barnhus imprint run by Axel Boman, Petter Nordkvist and Kornel Kovacs reaches release number three with a cheeky yellow 10". Up first is label boss Boman, whose "Dirty Laundry" offers another glimpse into what is developing into his signature style - classic deep house atmospherics imbued with a carefree sense of fun. The young Swedish producer has already been taken under the wing of DJ Koze, who welcomed him to the Pampa family with open arms; expect big things from Axel in the coming months. Proceedings on the flipside are chaired by fellow Swede Acid Andy (aka Andreas Jonsson), who offers up "Jack Dawson Polka" - a driving acid disco workout dripping with sweat that reminds us of In Flagranti in their pomp. Acitude is at the helm for this one with 'Bass Of Life' opening up and layer up prickly lines with jacked up beats and screwy bass. Review: Mumdance recently said he approached Fabric himself with the idea of doing a mix for their iconic long-running fabric live series and it's a good thing he did as his Fabriclive 80 was an eye-popping journey through experimental electronics, weightless club music and old hardcore favourites. The producer also managed to secure a ton of exclusives for the mix, two of which feature on this second and final 10" sampler. Up first is Mancunian bass heavyweight Acre whose " No Signal" sounds all the more hefty removed from its original context in Fabriclive 80, whilst New Zealand sonic explorer Fis is at his degraded best on the speaker shattering "Branch Light".

Traffic Jam (4:09)
Foresta (4:17)
Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

As his recent turn out on The Kelly Twins Happy Skull label demonstrated, Adjowa has a talent for refracting boogie, house and Italo that makes him a perfect candidate to follow Claws For? and Kelpe. Reach For Love (5:14)

Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

Review: An Aeroplane classic gets the Deetron treatment on the second limited edition 10" release from the Eskimo label. Originally released as part of Aeroplane's ambitious debut LP We Can't Fly, the Merry Clayton featuring "I Don't Feel" had never been remixed before the Swiss producer was invited to rework it as part of the exhaustive, multi disc ten year anniversary Eskimonde compilation from the seminal Belgian imprint. No doubt the track had previously remained untouched due to Clayton's powerful vocal turn which melded perfectly with Vito De Luca's rubbery Hi NRG production, but you can't fault the way that Deetron has reworked it, laying down an extended intro that burns with intensity before dropping a thumping, precision tooled beat. A previously unreleased Instrumental version adds some heat on the flip.

Review: Like many drummers, Alex Puddu has long been inspired by the work of Tony Allen. He pays tribute to the legendary Nigerian sticks-man on "The Devil Made Me Do It", a sumptuous dose of groovy downtempo Afrobeat laden with Allen-style polyrhythms, Africa '70 horns and lashings of eyes-closed electric piano solos. On the flip you'll find two different interpretations from Puddu. The first, subtitled "The Invisible Cosmic", doffs a cap to the Afro-cosmic world of Daniele Baldelli while retaining much of the warmth and musicality of the original mix. "The Invisible Astral" version is an altogether more spaced-out dub, with Puddu smothering the drums and horns in copious amounts of tape echo.

Review: The collaborator of choice for James Blake, Airhead has been wisely taking his time to develop on his own terms, sticking largely to his preferred stable at Brainmath to release his unique brand of utterly decayed 21st century beat music. Now though he steps up to R&S with a delicate 2-tracker that sees his burgeoning sound get a touch more full-bodied. "Wait" highlights the man's guitar talents, letting languid notes ring out over a typically deconstructed beat. "South Congress" however echoes Art of Noise and other such elegant experimentalists in its bombastic composition. Highly recommended.

Review: Manchester's Akkord have been heavily involved with the development of Fabric's Houndstooth label, and the majority of their output has come from the legendary club's young and vibrant new imprint. Much like fellow Mancunians Demdike Stare, their sound is hard to categorise and distil into one genre; the present "Monolith" sits somewhere between the sparser of Shackleton's tunes, and the whirlpool of styles and genres that fit into the ambient/drone territory. Similarly, "Megalith", on the other hand, is a broken artillery of kicks and sporadic jungle breaks, a gorgeous pile of stop-start bass and drums that keep darting in and out from all corners. Ever thought what 3D music might sound like? This goes pretty damn near. Warmly recommended.

Evergreen (Tim Reaper remix) (5:25)
Home Movies (feat Whytwo - Wardown remix) (6:08)
Review: Remix time! Following Akuratyde's beguiling album last year come two exceptional remixes that complement the foundational sentiment of the originals. The currently unavoidable Tim Reaper steps up first with his fine-tuned breakbeat chaos on 'Evergreen' before Technimatic member Wardown gives 'Home Movies' his own emotional twist. All breezy breaks and bags of space, he brings out the soul in every key stroke and guitar strum. Delivered on 10" but sounding XXXL, it's another essential BMTM outing.

Review: While there's no doubt the Middle East has stepped into the electronic music limelight in recent years, catalysed by good (a rebalancing of media focus within dance culture) and bad (controversy surrounding events like MDL Beast and the media's desperation to keep 'breaking new territory' in a world growing smaller by the day), Fatima Al Qadri is not part of this wave. A Senegal-born Kuwaiti, the US-based artist has been doing very good things for well over a decade (2010's 'Muslim Trance' mix is a must hear), creating everything from music exploring meeting points between Arabic traditions and contemporary synth work, to sound installations for renowned galleries. No stranger to Kode 9's Hyperdub, her third outing on the imprint since 2014 puts dark, atmospheric ambient out on the streets of Dakar after dark. Or something like that.

Track #3
Willow (Deep Explorer remix)
Review: Dubbyman's Deep Explorer imprint comes correct with a limited edition white label 10" from Kai Alce. With roots that stretch across America, from Atlanta to New York and Detroit, Alce is tied closest, musically, to the Motor City (he was hired to do lights at the city's legendary Music Institute at the age of 16). The Willow EP positively drips with Detroit machine soul; the title track features floating synths and a subtle bassline working beneath Azulu Phantom's vocals. This leads into the excellent "Track 3", which features some raw, brittle drums, soulful moans and an unforgettably deep bass line. Flip over for the acid-tinged Deep Explorer remix of the title track, which takes the original and spans it out over an entire side of wax with subtly hypnotic results.

Scuzzelbutt!
Between Us
Review: Banfield Audio's fledgling Monochromatic label return following a sterling debut emission from Specter and the label bosses themselves, turning to another under rated US producer in the shape of Amir Alexander. Despite his heritage, Alexander is only now really getting the wider exposure his explosive production capacity deserves and the Chicagoan's contribution here is an incendiary example of just what he's capable of. "Scuzzelbutt!" is Chicago acid house in a similar frame of mind to Larry Heard's prized Gherkin Jerks output, though the TR-led rhythms are precision tooled and crisp to a tee. Banfield Audio maintain their 100% appearance record with a slightly more sedate B Side saunter through classic Detroit deep house that accrues all manner of melodic charm as it progresses.

Monile - "Quin" (7:32)
Aline Umber - "Short Message Service" (5:31)
Review: Aline Umber is a new alias of Aline Brooklyn, hailing from the New York area's hottest tech house hub. Monile, meanwhile, is a Spanish artist whose past cuts never failed to dazzle for imprints such as Chez Doc. Together, the pair present a dazzling dialectic of straight tunage. 'Quin' is a cheeky and insidious minimal number, with filtrated and toothy basslines and reversed sound effects ensuring a moody groove. 'Short Message Service', meanwhile, is a danceably telecommunicative vision of the retrofuture - phone bleeps, 80s tropes, and a 4x4 undertow.

Erol Alkan - "Sub Conscious"
Phreak - "Acid On"
Review: To complement Erol Alkan's long overdue induction in the Fabric mix hall of fame, the London clubbing institution have pressed up this 10" featuring a rare original production from the Phantasy Sound boss backed with a early 90s rarity from Uwe Schmidt. Within the context of the mix the B Side precedes the A Side, but given how special an Erol Alkan original is, it's no surprise "Sub Conscious" is presented as the main draw here. Undoubtedly inspired by originators such as Hardfloor and Phuture, the acid soaked "Sub Conscious" still has a certain cosmic edge to it, whilst Phreak's "Acid On" sounds just as vital now despite the fact Schmidt originally recorded it some 23 years ago!

The Drum Thunder Suite (6:43)
Review: Those who've studied Tony Allen's distinctive drumming style often cite Art Blakey as an influence, so it's little surprise to find him paying tribute to the legendary jazz drummer on this superb album. Joined by his regular band, Allen covers a quartet of tracks written and recorded by Blakey and his band, the Jazz Messengers. The results are predictably impressive, with Allen's loose and polyrhythmic percussion providing a rock solid foundation for the horns, piano and double bass that sits atop. It's naturally closer to all-out jazz than to Afrobeat, but still bristles with the kind of punchy horns and life-affirming playing that characterizes Allen's work. "Thunder Suite", in which Allen drops a number of sweaty drum solos, is particularly potent.

Go Back (feat Damon Albarn - Fort Romeau Absolut remix) (5:50)
Review: Tony Allen's most recent long player, Film Of Life, is revisited here with both Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer, and rising house producer Fort Romeau tasked with remixing the Nigerian drummer's work. Vilod, as they are preferring to be called these days, sit up top with a typically long form take on "African Man" which reconstitutes the blaring horn funk of Allen's original piece into a subtle 12 minute reduction of electronic house music. On the flip Ghostly artist Fort Romeau reimagines the Damon Albarn featuring "Go Back" as whispy, deep house with some charming analogue synth flourishes.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Review: Deep Balearica beckons as Almunia conjures a spell-binding fusion of guitars and studio effects. Imagine Andrew Weatherall producing Simon and Garfunkel. The soundtrack to the perfect sunset, this gradually builds with the most genuine euphoria that could possibly be mustered in a studio. For a proper dancefloor jolt, jump on Marius Circus's dub... Armed with a pumping 4/4, mild acid squirts and heavy dub effects on the guitar, it's the soundtrack to the perfect night that follows the perfect sunset. Make sure this finds its way to your collection.

The Coyote Sunrise mix is sun kissed chugger, with looped vocals and layers of guitars all dancing arms aloft as the sun comes up. Review: This is a limited 10" from the always on form and in demand Alpha & Omega who offer up one of their golden oldies, 'Shuruaat Aur Ant', from all the way back in 1991. The A-Side was previously an album only cut that now deservingly gets its own side of wax, and the flip 'he Beginning & The End ' is a dub version that has never before been on wax in any form. The opener is a true hypnotic dub roller thank tot he haunting Hindi-sampled vocal that drifts above insistent drums. The flip is stripped of that so takes on a rather darker feeling.

Review: Alpha & Omega (who have album coming on Steppas) are an ever reliable duo that come on strong here with a limited edition 10" on Partial Records. 'Shuruaat Aur Ant' is a richly layered and deftly detailed modern dub cut. The steel plated drums and wub-wub bass set a firmly rooted groove, while all manner of intimating but subtle leads and vamping chords, tinkling tambourines and alluring vocals help to hypnotise. The flip side is a stripped back version, 'The Beginning & The End,' which is a more heady, empty cut.
