Balearic/Downtempo
East Coast (4:55)
West Coast (4:49)
Review: Last year long time Flower Records associates Masanori Ikeda and Takumi Kanedo (best known for his work as part of Cro-Magnon) released their debut album as Coastlines, a stunningly sunny, laidback affair that touched on everything from nu-jazz and nu-disco to dub, Latin rhythms and Balearic beats. Here they offer up a fresh double-header on a must-check 7" single. A-side "East Coast" is particularly alluring, with the duo joining the dots between Nils Frahm piano pieces, gentle nu-jazz grooves and wide-eyed Balearic ambience. The synths come to the fore on flipside "West Coast", an arguably even sunnier affair with slo-mo Latin beats, mazy solos and glistening guitars to the fore.

Joe Gibbs Mood (2:54)
Hot Buttered Corn (3:14)
Review: Harlem Shuffle Records' mission is to legitimately reissue killer 60s and 70's tracks and it sticks to that mantra here. This tidy 7" heads all the way back to 1969 for The Cobb's 'Joe Gibbs Mood', which was procured by the eponymous Joe Gibbs, who grew up in Montego Bay then Kingston, and brings all those reggae flavours to this tune. The earthy riffs, organ leads, wobbling drums all get you deep in the riddim. On the flip is 'Hot Buttered Corn', a busier and more upbeat version that has those shimmering organs front and centre in the mix.

Ronn Colbert - "Just One Kiss Away" (3:56)
Ronn & Selah - "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" (4:42)
Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

Raye Cole - "You Gotta Set Me Free" (3:41)
Rachel Maxann - "You Gotta Set Me Free" (3:40)
Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Rachel Maxann - "Find Another Man" (3:08)
Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Both are late night blues without a doubt though andit'sanother case of hats off to Original Gravity records for always keeping things fresh with their ever-changing moods.

Viemos De Longe (4:24)
Visita Noturna (4:22)
Review: Collignon brings some real class to this new one on Bongo Joe Records. It is a tidy two-track 45rpm that is best described as psychedelic tropical. Opener 'Viemos De Longe' is a dense and busy mix of warped synth wobbles and steamy jungle effects, humid pads and mystic melodies that take you deep into overgrown flora where all manner of birds and frogs await with their weird and wonderful calls. Add in some psyched-out rock guitars and a sense of 60s spy theme funk and you have a marvellous cut. Flip it over for further sonic fun in the form of the magical 'Visita Noturna.'

You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good (3:52)
Review: Collins And Collins were originally at the Top Of The Stairs back in 1980 when this one first landed. It has since become a revered underground classic much loved on the modern soul circuit as a timeless gem. The song was first composed by Ashford & Simpson who recorded their own version but when playing live would switch to the Collins & Collins version. The tune first came on CD via Expansion back in 1993 and now gets a first official 7" version back with the exceptionally rare version of Gamble & Huff's 'You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good' which first was recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1975.

Review: Bootsy Collins' latest album 'Power of the One' was a real doozy and now it gets picked apart for some special 7"s on Japan's P-Vine. 'Hip-Hop Lollipop' (feat. Fantaazma) sees Bootsy doing what he does best, grooving, funking and bring some big fun to the funk. It is a remake of 'Club Funkateers' from the album with German Fantaazma that was first dropped on streaming services to mark Black History Month earlier this year. On the flip is 'Bewise' (FredWreck Remix) which was a Japan-exclusive CD bonus track when the album first dropped. It's a tight funk offering with West-coast production.

Review: They say you can find any information you want on the internet these days, but we can't see anything about the band Colorado. Thankfully, the label reissuing this self-titled single managed to get in touch with an original member who explained that the band is three brothers from Mexico City. They made funky jazz fusion sounds as evidenced here. Hypnotic fender Rhodes defines the open with horns guitars, synths and bass bringing subtle rock elements to the fabulous groove. Flip it over for 'Para Ti' which is playful and experimental with all three musicians really doing a fine job of serving up great and varied interplay.

Review: Pressed for the first time on 7" vinyl, two killer rock club tracks from the legendary Colloseum, track 1 and 2 from their sophomore 1969 album 'Valentyne Suite' - 'Elegy' and 'The Kettle'.
The powerful and up-tempo 'Elegy' is a funky love song, with steaming guitars and heavy groove, an absolute home run of a funky club banger. On the flip is the 'The Kettle', featuring a heavy rock groove that the attentive ear will recognise as sampled by Fatboy Slim for 'Ya Mama'.

What A Night (4:38)
Review: Veritable mind-readers, the anonymous artist Comb Edits have us clairvoyantly sussed. They know we feel it. Coming through the Norwich-based I Travel To You label for their third release, this release amounts to two edits of older songs whose origin, we're ashamed to admit, we can't track down. Honest, live and funky, the tracks span two sides of the same coin, with 'I Know You Feel It' a convincing slo-mo funk edit, and 'What A Night' a cosmick, reverb-laden freakout version of a Japanese obscurio.

Communism (LP version) (2:09)
Review: Common is a giant of the hip-hop world and his eternally loved 1994 long player Resurrection is one of the best things he ever did. 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is an iconic tune taken from it, and one that is said by many to be one of hip-hop's great ever tunes. It is so admired because of its great lyrical twist and is now on 7" for the first time ever. This vital rap record is timeless and a perfect personification of hip hop which finds Common lamenting what the genre became and how commercial it was after a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s. A gorgeous sample of George Benson's 'The Changing World' is the icing on the cake.

Review: Bob Stanley's Measured Mile label comes through with a magnificent double-header from Connie Stevens. This is a real northern soul monster that was arranged by the late great and legendary Philly soul man Thom Bell. Original copies will cost you well over L250. First up are the rich and sumptuous string sounds and rattling tambourines of 'Tick Tock' with its perfect vocals. Originally the b-side tune was titled ''Betcha By Golly Wow' but the angel changed it to 'Keep Growing Strong' after it was a hit for both the Stylistics and Prince. All I Want Is You (3:49)
Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

Now, his Oonops label picks out their favourite joints from it for this tasty little 7" pressed on recycled black wax. Out kicks off with the old school breaks and freewheeling Rhodes chords of 'Goin All Out' complete with retro verses. 'Blood, Sweat and Soul' is another classically inclined beat with snippets of James Brown's wordless noises and warm organs. 'Hot Pursuit' goes big on the basslines and 'Jerry's Goove' closes with some, well, country influences.

This hand-numbered pink vinyl 7" is limited to 300 copies and opens with the mad feel-good vibe of 'Stay A While' with its happy chords and dusty, driving drum funk. The Cooperettes got in first during the mid 70s with a very rare copy that picked up momentum during the Northern/modern soul crossover in mid 80s when copies began to surface and never really lost favour as OG copies on I-D-B go for near L500. The Poindexter Brothers - "What I Did In The Streets (I Should Have Done At Home)" (3:17)
Review: Soul Junction's latest release brings together two sought-after heavy soul cuts from the studio of the Poindexter Brothers: their own 1969 heater "What I Did In The Street (I Should Have Done At Home)" - a sweet, Vibraphone-sporting slab of rasping, full-throated, horn-heavy sixties soul just dripping with emotion - and a killer cut they produced a year earlier for singer Vivian Copeland. You'll find that song, "Chaos In My Heart", on the A-side. Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Review: Some 30 years since their debut album, the British jazz quartet Corduroy are still going strong with their incredible organ jazz and vocal stylings on a new 7" 'No More Me Me Me / Hypnotoad'. 'No More Me Me Me' is a zany vocal time capsule, with a tongue-in-cheek style that brings to mind Blur's 'Park Life' or literally any B-52s song. Alternatively on the B-side is something much more in Corduroy's playing ground, a sensational instrumental jazz number with an organ focus. This is another incredible 45 to add to any jazz collection.

Review: Arising phoenix-like from the flames of a film soundtrack originally thought to have been lost in a blaze, 'Psychose' and its partner in crime 'Oh! Lord' now come as the latest reissued musical tidbits from French jazz fusion masters Cortex. Though the name of the film for which they composed these two tittilating trinkets is unknown, the vibe of the picture is certainly inferable from the tracks' light restlessness and hard-to-pin-down contrast. Bright clavs, electric pianos and rough-edged drums whirl about both mixes in stereo-optimized fashion, sultrily portraying the headspace of a 70s street urchin with a chromatic relish for life.

Review: Australian artist and Moonshoe founder Cousin looks to the rich local surrounds of their neighbourhood for inspiration in this new techno two tracker. It comes hot on the heels of the well-received recent outing on NAFF and kicks off with the deep, dubby and supple rhythmic sounds of 'Rosie' which is detailed with wispy melodies and distant twangs, watery droplets and alien life forms. Review: A great choice of reissue by Kent Dance, Carolyn Crawford's 'Get Up And Move' is a fiery vocal soul highlight, and impassioned plea to the object of her affections to "get up and move", before he, she or they do something they "don't wanna do". It's a situation we can all relate to, but this recollection of Crawford's rendition of the scene lends the feeling an extra weight, igniting the inner carpe diem in all of us. Review: We'd advise serious soul heads to take a look at this one. Part of the "Kent Select" series of dancefloor-focused 45s, it features two previously unissued 1971 recordings, both of which were produced by Mickey Stevenson. In some ways, it's incredible to think that Carolyn Crawford's "Ready Or Not Here Comes Love" has never previously been released; it's a genuinely inspired, up-lifting slab of soaring, stomping soul that will get Northern Soul enthusiasts racing for the dancefloor in their droves. Flipside "What Made You Think", credited to Hodges, James, Smith and Crawford, is almost as good, even if it lacks the rushing, celebratory positivity of the sublime A-side. In a word: essential!

Fug (4:26)
Brothers On The Slide (4:10)
Review: In the early '70s, Cymande made a trio of killer albums that remain stone cold classics to this day. For this reissue 7", Mr Bongo has dipped into two of those albums - 1973's Second Time Around and 74's Promised Heights - and dug out two of the best-loved, most-sampled cuts. On the A you'll find "Fug", a low-slung, bassline-driven party full of killer drum breaks, righteous horn solos and, and conscious lyrics that call for global action against inequality (little, it seems, has changed politically since). It's one of those you should really own, as is the ever more familiar flipside "Brothers On The Slide", which boasts one of the most recognizable grooves in the history of dance music.

Review: Get On Down are a trusted destination for classics cut to 7" - the kind of weapons it's always handy to have in quick and easy reach when you're ready to set the party alight. On this occasion, we're tracking back to Cypress Hill's 1991 debut, which, let's face it, is loaded with heat from start to finish. Skipping past some of the more obvious picks, we kick off with the P-funk sampling freakery of 'Psycobetabuckdown', which has more than enough juicy hooks to get everyone wiggling. Likewise, DJ Muggs was keeping the pressure up with the sweet licks that power 'Something For The Blunted', albeit a short interlude before we get into the eternal 'Latin Lingo' on the flip. For life long Cypress heads and good time hip-hop DJs of all stripes, this is an essential nugget of funk.

Feel Like Makin' Love (Kero Uno remix) (2:16)
Review: American neo-soul pin-up D'Angelo has released a couple of the smoothest records of the last 30 years. He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Here Kero Uno remixes a couple of his tunes and ups their funky quotient to make them more suitable to dancefloors. First, he flips 'Spanish Joint' into a key-laced and funky workout with low-slung, hip-swinging grooves sure to seduce next to the zippy synth leads. On the flip is his hot take on 'Feel Like Makin' Love', another bona-fide gem full of heart and soul.

Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. The rhymes are slowed and stretched to match and the whole tune has an aspirational mood that permeates you're being. 'Be Great 2' is continuation that seals the deal.

Review: 2Tone icon Rhoda Dakar is back on suitably dusty pink vinyl 7" given that it drops the day after Valentine's Day. This one is another reggae-infused cover following the success of her latest album, 'Version Girl.' 'I Don't Mind' was originally penned by Peter Shelley of Buzzcocks but here gets the Rhoda treatment, and is an homage to one of Rhoda's favourite songwriters. It pays tribute to Shelley's songwriting prowess and reflects on an encounter with Shelley in 2015. Dakar's soulful rendition of it means 'I Don't Mind' resonates as a timeless tribute.

Review: Dallas based singer-songwriter Derek Damian recorded the gloriously life-affirming soul nugget 'Watcha Wanna Do' a decade ago. It has lost none of its charm or magic all these years later as this new pressing attests. The rolling grooves, the effortlessly epic vocals and the serene string all ooze class. On the flip, he gets more romantic with the perfectly tender and intimate 'Never Felt So Good.' It's beefed up by bold baritone vocals, contemporary R&B production and gooey bass. A killer 45 for sure.

Review: Dancefloor Stompers was formed in Sardinia in 2009. They are a talented group of musicians who have a big love of mod jazz, black music roots and Italian soundtracks and library music classics from the 50s through to the 80s and all of that influences this new EP, Phuture Soul. Recorded and mixed at Solid Twin Studio between May 2021 and January 2022, it kick off with the title track which pairs rock guitars with funky basslines. 'Catch This Train' has a more playful pop-rock feel with big horns, 'Glass Tears' is a smoother groove and 'Not In My Name' closes on a more downbeat note.

Review: Darondo's "Legs" - a sexually charged chunk of heady Californian funk-soul fusion rich in punchy horns, killer drum breaks and eyes-closed lead vocals - has long been one of those "Holy Grail" records for soul collectors. As a result, original copies of the 1974 "45" change hands for hundreds of pounds apiece, making this Ubiquity release a genuine blessing for those with reduced record buying budgets. The sublime title track resides on the A-side, with the more relaxed, groovy and down-low "Let My People Go" taking pride of place on the flip. In a word: essential.

Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

The result is 'Starlight', a serving of emotive soul funk with a nod to legend Stevie Wonder. Over on the flip, we have the late night boogie-down vibe of Destiny II's 'I'm Here For This' featuring Aria Lyric's powerful vocal delivery, underpinned by an uplifting arrangement that has summertime vibes abound. Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

Review: Following their acclaimed 2022 album Truth & Soul which was widely praised, this new double-sided 45rpm unveils new music from Michelle David and The True Tones's upcoming new record. It has 'Brothers And Sisters' on the A side, the lead single from the album, which boasts a Marvin Gaye-sque 70s soul vibe that is sure to ignite dancefloors with a hint of Northern Soul magic. On the flip side, 'This Is You' is a blue-eyed soul stomper. David's musical journey began in New York's church scene at age four. She later joined The Mission of Love at five and has a career that spans Broadway and includes collaborations with icons like Diana Ross and Michael Bolton.

That is where he eventually start this own journey and with elements of Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson added in, he now lands with a fully formed, heart swelling soul sound. It comes on Defected after label A&R Simon Dunmore hunted Davie down having heard him singing on an advert for Wild Turkey bourbon in the cinema. Review: Claire Davis hails from Canada, and she's an undisputed modern queen of soul channelling the likes of Etta James and Sharon Jones in her fierce, impassioned vocal delivery. On this new single for LRK, she's worked with Toronto's Kyla Charter and Scott McCannell to whip up two powerful slices of vintage-sounding R&B which hark back to the glory days of Motown while benefitting from the fullness of a modern-day production. You can tell Davis is committed to the final sound of her recording, capturing a raw live energy and a warmth which adds all the more impact when she's kicking her lover to the curb on 'Long Gone'.

It has never been available as a single before and with the brass build and funky groove, it's irresistible.
