Hip Hop/R&B
A Madman's Dream (4:26)
Can't Hold It Back (5:14)
Review: Funky Dividends is a label that aims only to preserve classic hip-hop gold as it is - they don't do remixes or edits or mash-ups, they just present stone-cold heat. The label has done so before when it comes to The East Flatbush Project, but each and every time the music sells out so this is a reissue of their clastic-era and golden boom bap gem 'A Madman's Dream'. The snares hit crisp, the bass swings down low and the bars are fresh, with distant flutes adding some mystery. On the flip is the slightly more raw 'Can't Hold It Back.' Two essential hip-hop tunes from the halcyon days.

Tell Love Hello (2:39)
Tell Love Hello (instrumental) (3:04)
Review: Here comes a sweet slice of dub reggae courtesy of the late Sid Bucknor's studio and the gorgeous vocal work of The Ebony Sisters. On 'Tell Love Hello If You See Him', they're singing a Gamble & Huff creation originally performed by Mellow Moods and released by The North Bay in 1971. It's a bittersweet but ultimately feel-good tune backed by a pitch-perfect riddim, which Bucknor sends out in an understated style for the dub version on the flip. Some of the finest reggae tunes in history are the heartbreak ones, and so it goes on this golden 7".

Sweet Honey (4:03)
Review: It's time to don your leathers and strap in for another ride on go-slow master Eddie C's Read Motorbike. This time out the Canadian deep disco specialist kicks off his latest 7" with 'D8 With The Rain.' As always it is a super smooth groove that is smartly embellished with dusty old samples that tug at the heart. 'Sweet Honey' is a sunny one with plenty of joyous little chords and a carefree groove that flaps and slaps away down low. Easy to love, hard to pull-off grooves once again from the evergreen Eddie C.

Immer (5:09)
Immer (instrumental) (5:09)
Review: Gerd Jansen's Running Back is brilliantly and effortlessly eclectic. It's a label that does easy to love house anthems as well as more experimental fair and plenty in between. And that's where Ede & Deckert sit - in a world to the left of centre with catchy synth tunes feat. Sargland. 'Immer' is their latest and pairs doleful guitar riffs a la Joy Division with soul vocals and slick drums that will work in the right dance floor setting. It's a great sound and one that has the potential to become something of an unlikely underground dance hit. The B-side has an instrumental that allows the synth work to shine more.

I Like Your Style (3:24)
The Love I Found In You (feat Chuck Edwards) (4:15)
Review: During the 1970s, San Francisco-based family band The Edwards Generation released a handful of obscure singles that are now sought by funk and soul collectors the world over. These very same collectors should enjoy this tidy seven-inch on Cordial, which offers up two previously unheard recordings from the Chuck Edwards-helmed outfit. A-side "I Like Your Style" is a breezy and laidback dancefloor mover, with a sweet lead vocal, rubbery slap bass, jangling guitars, fuzzy horns and unfussy but floor-ready drums. Chuck Edwards sings lead on the loved-up, West Coast style goodness of "The Love I Found In You", a sunshine-ready number that's arguably the stronger of two killer cuts.

The Egyptian Lover & Hanky Panky - "Computer Love (Sweet Dreams)" (3:16)
Jamie Jupitor - "Computer Power" (previously unreleased version) (4:49)
Review: Mr Bongo take this next one back to 1984 and 1985 with a tasty little split release from The Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupitor. Both tunes offer unique takes on the famous electro funk sound and cult Los Angeles-based producer, vocalist and DJ The Egyptian Lover goes first with seminal track 'Computer Love (Sweet Dreams). It's a deep space exploration with melodic bass and slake drum work. The Lovers's disciple Jamie Jupitor heads up the reverse with the more high speed and edgy style and angular beats of 'Computer Power.' Both tunes make for irresistible body music.

Review: Madrid via Cuba musical gang El Combo Batanga have finally dropped this new double-sider 7". It was teased by the early reals sou the a-side which brings plenty of dance floor filing heat with 'El Que La Rompe La Paga'. It's packed with samba shuffle, expressive horn work and results, and relentless keys work designed to get the ass moving. On the flip is 'Toca La Campana' which is a little less dense but not less rhythmic in the way it sways to and fro with fiery Spanish vocals and funk riffs.

Review: Newark's El Da Sensei first came up with Artifacts alongside Tame One in the mid 90s, but he soon struck out solo with a career that's yielded countless fresh LPs and EPs right up to today. Signature Funk first dropped in the US via Jim's Pool Room and F5 Records, and now it's available in Europe thanks to Belgian label Hip Hop Enterprise. It's a classic slice of boom bap hip-hop for the old-skool heads, and as well as the Capo-produced original you can enjoy DJ Crucial's 'SP 1200 Remix' on the B side for more of those crunchy-as-hell beats backing up Sensei's flow.

El Klan - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (4:13)
John Wagner Coalition - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (3:12)
Review: Mushi 45 is launching a new series featuring fresh edits of obscure covers of cuts by James Brown and the JB's. The first boasts two thoroughly obscure covers of "Cold Sweat". On the A you'll find a tidy tweak of a rousing, raucous and sexually charged 1968 version by El Klan, a Mexican band renowned for their heavyweight take on funk, soul and rhythm and blues. Over on side B you'll find an interpretation from the John Wagner Coalition that originally featured on their 1976 debut album, which unusually was made up entirely of James Brown covers. Their version is a little more laidback, with tons of spacey synthesizer flourishes, crunchy Clavinet lines and oodles and wild Hammond organ solos.

Review: A low-key 7" split single, this stripped back soul beauty is El Michels Affair's latest in a slew of new singles and EPs. The sultry A-side 'Stack The Deck' is a mood-resetting embrace of chance. The B-side, 'Things Done Changed', is a smooth, gorgeous take on The Notorious B.I.G.'s original, curtailing its suicidally string-laden confidence for a much more soulful, horn-laden rendition.

Review: Longstanding New York troupe El Michels Affair bite down on 2017 with two on-point left-sided soul jams. "Tearz" is a biggie, not least because it features Lee Fields and The Shacks. A warm, organ groove with loose breaks and drops into pure harmonic bliss, it's another spellbinding affair from the Wu-approved crew. "Verbal Intercourse" takes more of a slinkier, subtle approach with clipped horns spitting an insistent hook over sparse, twanging instrumental elements. Stunning, as always.

Before that full-length with Roots co-founder and lyricist Black Thought - which is a meditation on the state of the hip-hop scene in the early 2020s - we get this taster single from it. It's a fresh reissue of an impossible-to-find promo 45 first issued to promote Flamenco legend El Turronero's 1980 disco album, EL Hondo. It features two tracks that have long been regular features in the sets of many dusty-fingered Balearic selectors, especially globe-trotting cult leader DJ Harvey. On the A-side you'll find the cosmic, driving, synth-laden brilliance of 'Las Penas (La Cana) - a genuine "everything but the kitchen sink" affair topped off by El Turronero's distinctive vocals - while the more exotic 'Si Yo Volviera Al Nacer', where synths and Sitars accompany the Flamenco-disco grooves, resides on the flip.

Review: Mushroom Pillow is on a proud and so far successful mission to bring back Latin American music from the 60s-80s via its Relatin project. it's all about mixing up the traditional and the modern and putting fresh spins on what went before. Many of the originals they look to have gone unnoticed the first time round and that's the case here as Franc Moody adds his own twist to Elia & Elizabeth's 'Alegria.' His remix is a sympathetic one that gets the hips swinging over fat and funky disco bass and beneath the sunny Latin vocals. He strips them away on the instrumental version on the flip.

Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. He also had a fine knack for writing great songs and always brought real emotions to his work. That is typified here as he linked with The Flames as well as Tommy McCook & The Supersonics for the buttery smooth and impassioned 'If I Could Rule The World' with its natty riffs, swaggering drums and of course golden vocals. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. It was recorded back in 1967 and is as raw and emotional as soul gets. It was a debut for her on Warner and was a rather controversial tune that divided the option of fans. Lorraine never managed to reach the heights of this one again and left the music industry in the 1970s Jerry Ragovoy produced the subtle sounds to accompany the most fantastically expressive vocals. Hopefully, we can change some of those misconceptions by telling you just how special this new EP for Jazz45 is sounding! The opening "New Day" features the soulful vocals of Ahu over a rolling, breaks-centric groove with plenty of melodic quirks and, of course, the unstoppable euphoric power of the flute; the flipside's instrumental allows you to get even closer to the music constructed by Emanative, which is undoubtedly the outfit's long-running forte.

This is primo boogie from the late 80s now landing on 45rpm for the very first time. It's been taken from the tape archives of London singer-producer Tony Shand and kicks off with the vocal version of 'Nothing's Happening'. Helpfully, Rain & Shine have decided to save us all a few bob by slinging out this licensed reissue. The title track is something of a bustling disco-funk gem - a genuinely wonderful fusion of hazy vocals, dueling horn solos, spacey synthesizer flourishes and driving bass guitar. Here they continue to mine the duo's catalogue, delivering a new edition of the pair's 1987 debut single (which, it should be noted, has long been hard to find on "45"). Review: Mr Bongo's EPMD reissue series continues with a fresh pressing of one of the NYC duo's most significant and best-loved singles, 1988's 'You Gots To Chill'. Predating much of the West Coast G-funk material that later covered similar sonic ground, it sees the duo delivering some of their rap verses over a beat crafted from samples of Zapp's P-funk classic 'More Bounce To The Ounce' and Kool & The Gang party classic 'Jungle Boogie'. This time round, it comes backed by another EPMD classic from the same period: the mid-tempo, JB's-sampling head-nodder that is 'Let The Funk Flow'. 'The Big Payback' piles the funk on heavy, keeping it moody in the low end for EPMD to do their thing over the top, while original opening track 'So Wat Cha Sayin' nestles on the B side with one of the wildest rub downs Erick and Parrish ever committed to record. Truly essential hip hop from the golden era.

It's So Hard To Say "So Long" (3:53)
World Of Loneliness (3:19)
Review: Originally released on the Soulful Thangs Vol. 7 compact disks for Latin Soul Recordings in 2007, the song 'It's So Hard To Say So Long' by the Equasions took on a life of its own. A timeless soul and funk single recorded in San Antonio in 1971, revered by sweet soul collectors internationally, has now become available for the first time in over 50 years through Symphonical Records. In partnership with band leader and songwriter, Robert Williams, this group also features high school classmates Vernon Shannon, James Hartfield, Ricky Cotton, and Lamar Sumter. 'It's So Hard To Say So Long', is a poignant sentiment to lost love, yet hope created through beautiful harmonies, whereas 'World Of Loneliness' is a psychedelic reflection of society of the era, which Robert mentions remains true today. Big shout out to Symphonical for putting out this very desirable 7"

Review: Writer, singer and former New York banker, Eric Harris first emerged in the late 2000s with tear-jerking tracks such as "Drama" and the belting "Queen" and has appeared on Soul Unsigned and Soul Junction on various occasions. "Nightlife" is a great example of his Vandross-style depth, tone and warmth while the heartfelt (and just a little steamy) "Backstage" finally sees 45" justice after becoming a cult radio hit in 2012. Pure bedtime music.

I Know You Got Soul (4:46)
I Know You Got Soul (dub) (4:41)
Review: There can be few hip-hop heads who don't know Eric B & Rakim's "I Know You Got Soul", a Bobby Byrd and Funkadelic-sampling beast from 1987 that remains one of rap's most recognizable moments. The rap from Rakim is iconic, but it's the Eric B beat behind - all loose-but-heavy, snare-heavy beats, recognizable guitar licks and chorus-style blasts of Bobby Byrd vocals- that makes the track such a club-ready hip-hop classic. Here it gets the reissue treatment on "45" courtesy of Mr Bongo, with the duo's brilliant vocal version being joined on the flip by the overlooked, delay-laden "Dub Mix". For those who covet alternate versions of classic cuts, this instrumental revision is a must.

Review: Eric B & Rakim remain two of hip hop's most love characters. Their wordplay and beat making was second to none back inter prime and has barely been bettered since. For that reason reissue slick this will always be in hot demand. This one focuses on the pair's 'Eric B For President,' a golden era great from 1986 that now comes on 7" after being an elusive find for hip hop heads for many years. This particular tune was Rakim at his most raw and direct best. The rap hero lay down the foundation here of what he would build his whole career on.

Review: Ernie Mckone & Toby Baker have produced this new single for Erine & The Family McKone. The A-side features Valerie Ettienne who is well known for her work with the likes of Galliano and Jamiroquai (with him she made a cover of a Brenda Russell classic). 'In The Thick Of It' is a super silky and mid-tempo soul jam with lavish melodies and gentle grooves. The flipside is in cahoots with Lex Cameron, an increasingly noteworthy London-based singer. It's a tender and loved up tune for cosy dance floor moments.

Review: As a result of business-related difficulties, Dee Ervin only released two sides on Hotlanta, but these as yet unearthed recordings match anything he might have created in a more "successful" career. By 1974 he was as much a composer as artist, but he excels at both on these two numbers, both of which were fully produced and ready for release. 'You Make Me Happy' is a terrific uptempo dance track that recently featured on Masterpieces Of Modern Soul; Vol 6; 'Give Me One More Day', meanwhile, was issued erroneously in 1975 as a Tribe LP track on ABC, but the session details clearly have it as a Dee Ervin recorded number.

There is a brilliantly dreamy vibe to 'Special' which has your head amongst clouds of hazy weed smoke. "again' is no different, but with curlicues of jazzy melody that drift by like sonic flotsam. The frosted beats of 'Sunset Girl' are no less vibes, this time with a late night feel next to swirling vocal sounds and closer 'I Want Love' brings an old school 60s soul sound thanks to the smart samples.

Review: NYC disco-house revival group Escort released their second album Animal Nature in 2015., and have followed it up with another sleek and funky affair in 2019. But this single comes from that second album and is backed with another one from the same LP, but remixed by Tiger & Woods. 'Animal Nature' is filled with warm, future retro synths that reverberate up and down the scale while the clean vocals for way up above. The Tiger & Woods remix is a camp, stomping disco house workout with a brilliant bassline. This, then, is a red hot little 7".

Review: The Essence Of Life is very much listening to the sort of sublime soul music that is always offered up by the Epsilon label if you ask us. This latest limited edition 45rpm features their 'You're An Angel' which is one of the many tunes that made the group such favourites back in the seventies. They formed in Charlotte North Carolina at Johnson C Smith University and are made up of a pair of basketball players who were allegedly overheard singing in the shower and asked if they wanted to form a group. They went on to perform with plenty of stars of the day and as you can hear from this 7" their falsettos are to die for.

Choices (Fuga Ronto remix - dub version) (3:34)
Review: Pinning down Ethimm's self-titled 2021 debut album is tough, though his description - snapshots of a hopeless romantic's life packed into an eccentric mix of genres, all in the spirit of Balearic - is surprisingly accurate. Here one of the set's undoubted highlights, the moody dub disco-goes-Balearic chugger 'Choices', is re-animated by Phantom Island regulars Fuga Ronto. The Swiss twosome's A-side vocal take is nothing short of brilliant: a delightfully dreamy, sweet, slow-motion shuffle through reverb-laden synth chords, bubbly bass, echoing vocals and dubbed-out drums. The accompanying instrumental flip-side dub is, if anything, even better - an echoing, shuffling drift through eyes-closed Balearic brilliance that sounds like a long-lost gem from the mid 1980s. Simply superb.

Review: The Ethiopian Brothers transport you to a vibrant fusion world where Ethiopian jazz, Afro drums and funk all collide. Released in 1972, this single showcases the band's mastery of traditional Ethiopian rhythms intertwined with elements of Western funk and soul. 'Ashadwa' exudes infectious energy and is driven by lively brass sections and mesmerizing vocals weaved into the dynamic arrangements next to wah way guitars and steamy sax. It is a real dancefloor heater while a version comes on the flip without the vocals.

Review: The first release from the Ethiopian Brothers, 2019's 'Ashadwa', was a brilliant slab of Afro-funk that many erroneously believed to be a long-lost classic. In fact, it was the work of a contemporary producer associated with Jalepeno Records. Regardless, the record sounded authentically old and dusty, as does this equally as inspired sequel. 'Selassie (Part 1)' sets the tone, with the producer and his session musicians serving up a righteous Afro-funk workout rich in Tony Allen influenced drum-breaks, flanged guitars, raw tenor sax lines and killer bass guitar. Even more righteous is the flipside 'Part 2' version that showcases more snaking sax lines and some seriously infectious, chant-like vocals.

Their catalogue has been pillaged here by the always-on-point Belgian label Roots Vibration, and they have come up with their 'Obeah Book' tune for reissue on this 45rpm. It was produced by Niney The Observer and is a deep steady and rolling rhythm that has some nice and playful piano up top, but the icing on the cake is the heartfelt vocals. On the back, Observer goes it alone with 'Back Weh', a nice head-twisting dub.

Review: The goddaughter of Pharoah Sanders, Adriana Evans is a mid 90s soul artist who emerged with a throwback sound. Rather than leaning on the synths and drum machines of the post-disco era she looked to the golden instrumental years. Her debut album in 1996 is a real classic and is the source of the two gorgeous tunes here. 'Looking For Your Love' is a lush, mid-tempo tune with crisp drums and exquisite horns and chords making for a golden vibe. On the reverse is the equally great 'I'll Be There', which is a laced with plaintive piano and flutes that are airy and emotive.

Freedom Song (version) (4:06)
Review: Two twinkly slices of roots reggae from the late 1970s: 'Freedom Song' and its version, by Tyrone Evans - a Jamaican singer who was part of the vocal group The Paragons - is a wonderfully lilting and politically-charged track. A plea for liberation and justice over a militant riddim with horns and keyboards, its star element is perhaps its whirling guitar hook, which sounds almost sitar-like in its pentatonic melody. Park Heights All Stars, helmed up by boss Delroy Francis, deliver the dub version, providing a remarkably different interpretation of the track, albeit one that is no less punchy and immediate. This is a reissue from the one-time prolific Park Heights Records, a New York-based label that was prolific in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Review: Betty Everett's style of soul was usually energetic rather than bashful, but 'Wondering' and 'Try It You'll Like It' were curveballs. Taken from her 1970s album 'Styrene', the two songs were composed alongside mega-producer Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, and both explored the loneliness of relationships, despite closeness. Track one is a blissful slow jam canopying an angel's voice, hurting at the pain of a lover's absence, while the B insists on physical intimacy through the boudoir of soul.

Berlin-based, Italian producer Armonics (Slow Motion) came across the 'Radio' 7? by coincidence in 2020 near his home in Southern Italy.
