Review: The short-lived moniker of Kingpin Cartel comprised techno titan Mark Broom and lost legend CJ Baker. Their output spanned a 5-year period starting in 2005, on which the release of 'Moogie Nights' laid down their methodology; funky abstinations from Broom's usual style of hard, gritty techno. The 'Ghetto' EP was their second and most famous release. Best known for its lead title track, a triumphant techno-funk piece and a prototype for the bright, swanky mode repopularised by the likes of KiNK in recent decades. Also came 'Fishfunk', a wacky cut dipping its on motifs from French house to g-funk, and 'Bottle', a raspy house number replete with bitcrushed chords and domestic, found-sound samples.

Review: Uk label Toolroom has become one of the most prominent in the world and a real entry point into dance music for younger ears. Mark Knight has worked tirelessly to make that happen and now he's been busy in the studio cooking up a cross over hit with horns desired to be heard on the most sun kissed dance floor's this summer. It's got plenty of well known samples, rolling drum beats and diva vocals that will have you emptying your lungs. The Danny Howard remix is a little more tense and late night for when the sun drops and things get more heads down.

Review: Radio Slave's Rekids remains right at the forefront after decades in the game. That is no doubt in part down to great recruitment of new talent who keep updating its signature sounds. This time out Hilit Kole makes a debut with 'Hot Mess,' a raw and jacking house cut with rugged drum loops and a sleazy vocal that turns into an epic wail. An Even Hotter mix brings more libidinous vocal overtones and then the one and only Mike Dunn remixes. Firstly he keeps it smooth and seductive, then pairs back the vocal to allow his lithe synths to shine. A nice varied package from all.

Review: Johannes Kolter is Kolter and is also a producer who went under the name DJOKO. He's been busy this year with plenty of goodness dropping including an album and three EPs. Now comes hit sone, again on his home label Pilot. It is inventive stuff that functions well on the floor as it straddles the worlds of breaks, house and plenty more. 'Got High Again' is lively and dynamic with its squealing leads and dusty breaks, then 'Weirdo' layers up leftfield melodies and blurts of playful synth modulation. 'Prospekt' is a wild fusion of rock riffs and high-speed funky breaks and 'Duck Concert' closes with hardcore drum breaks and soulful synths next to mad scratchinG.

Review: Kolter has been busy, as always, and has a couple of fine outings dropping at similar times. This one on Bristol's always-wealthy Shall Not Fade is on nice orange vinyl. It opens with the feel-good synth chords of 'DX7 Together' which also has something of an early Chicago house feel to the cowbells, but plenty of future-facing tech vibes too. The pace picks up for the warm and breezy 'Please Come To My Show' (feat Leo Pol) then it's more chord-laced joy that comes to the fore on 'Up In The Sky'. Berlin fav Cynthia makes those chords have a distinctly old-school feel with her remix.

Review: Theo Kottis, like many artists, produced plenty of music during lockdown and much of it took on the characteristics of that time. Now he presents six of them here on Permanent Vacation. They provided him moments of escapism during the lockdown and suggest he was listening to everything from pop to Italo to new wave. 'On My Mind' is synth heavy house, 'Piano Dance' is a super happy tune for fun times and 'Cocktail' explores a twitchy disco vibe with throwback feels. The second half of the EP carries on in just as varied and vital fashion. Super stuff.

Review: "Fresia Magdalena is about activism" says Berlin based Peruvian Sofia Kourtesis. It comes after a breakout 2020 that saw her get props as far and wide as The Observer and Mixmag as well as playing in NME's Top 100 list. She builds on that success with another EP that marks a big step up and features her singing properly on her own music for the first time. The sound sources here owe a lot to Peru, with jingling bells and rumbling bass, rich melodies and also explicit field recordings collected from around the city of Lima. The grooves are rooted in house but explore the every edges of the genre in personal and absorbing ways.

Review: Nina Kraviz is one of global techno's most recognisable names and biggest headliners by now. But many years ago, when she was still not long finished with her dentist training, she was a little-known underground artist sneaking out superbly subtle and smoky house jams on labels like Underground Quality and Rekids. It is the latter label where she served up 'Taxi Talk', which features her own vocal musings and whisperings recorded late one night on a taxi journey. It is paired with trippy synth motifs and a swaying, stripped-back groove to make for something impossibly intimate. This reissue also comes with a twisted tech remix from David Lohlein and disco-fried venison from Sterac Electronics.

Review: DeLaChaud is the long-time home and record label of Krewcial, who is something of what you might call a young veteran in the game. Following impressive solo albums on PlayItAgainSam and UK's BBE in the early 2000's he is still going strong and this new one proves it. Whether sampling jazz greats, laying down funky bass and infectious drums there is no mistaking the soulful impact of these tunes. 'Love & Devotion' is a vocal gem that will raise anyone's spirits no matter which version you pick here and 'Nereci' brings a throwback house sound with a Latin vocal on the club mix. The Bruk mix is a lovely London broken beat and a final acoustic mix is a useful tool.

Keith Thompson and Keiko Yoshimura, Veteran New York City-based producer Eric Kupper is back on his long running Hysteria imprint with "Rain Falls' - this time with vocal contributions by singer/actor Yasmeen Sulieman. An expression in spiritual and life-affirming deep house exactly the way it's meant to be and simply mesmerising. The arrangement is the perfect backdrop to Sulieman's awe-inspiring voice. Review: We're happy to report that the music on the 'Son of a Biscuit' EP from Kuwahara aka Mick Wilson and Scott Gray is every bit as colourfully eccentric as the title it bears. 'Ginger Cut' is dubbed up cloud of sound billowing over choppy hip-hop breaks, with an old skool female MC poking her head out of it to have her say every now and again. Rich Tea's edit of the track takes it into housier territory but, like one of those old Orb ambient singles singles on Wau Mr Modo, still gives plenty of work to the studio's echo chambers. 'Jaffa Quake' goes for snazzy, jazzy overtones and off kilter breaks, 'Kustard Cream' offers up reggae skank, again served up with plenty of sonic exotica, and there's even a more relaxed, Balearic bonus mix of 'Ginger Cut'. A thoroughly nutty record, but a genius one at the same time.

Review: Some 13 months on from the release of volume two, L'Oggetto (real name Marco Scozetto) delivers the third volume in his ongoing Musica da Discoteca series. The New York-based Italian is in fine form throughout, smoothly moving between the lilting chords, eyes-closed electronic textures, acid bass and kick drum-driven deep house beats of 'Aquatico', the oceans-deep, TB-303 powered dancefloor immersion of 'Fluido', the New Jersey garage-meets-early-90s Italian dream house lusciousness of 'DeepOrg' and the gorgeous -house revivalism of 'AltVers', with its synth-flute riffs, chunky bass and tactile pads. In other words, it's a well-rounded EP full of genuinely playable deep house club cuts.

Review: A few years back, legendary Alt-jazz saxophonist (and original Philip Glass Ensemble member) Dickie Landry handed LCD Soundsystem's Korey Rich a tape of a very NYC-sounding punk-funk track he recorded in his native Louisiana way back in 1986. Finally out, 'Hang The Rich' sounds like a long-lost downtown dub-disco gem that joins the dots between Patrick Adams' more eccentric disco productions, Bristolian punk-funk mavericks Maximum Joy, and McFadden & Whitehead after a fistful of psychedelics. Optimo's JD Twitch provides the obligatory 21st century dancefloor tweak - a stretched out, DJ-friendly revision blessed with bonus jacking drum machine rhythms and some trippy synth motifs. It's breathlessly brilliant, as anyone who has heard him and Optimo partner Jonnie Wilkes DJ over the last three years will confirm.

Review: Tommy Largo is a big deal in the world of jacking house and here he lands on Greenhouse Recordings with plenty of evidence to support that. His sound comes steeped with Southern influences on opener 'BBQ Ribs' with its noodling jazz chords and spoken word mutterings making for a lively atmosphere over funky beats. The Jam Funk Remix has a Chicago bump to it with the jazzy keys left in place over well-swung drums. 'On No Not Again' hints at new jack swing with its steamy sax lines and effortlessly catchy groove before 'BBQ Ribs' (Oddphonic remix) closes out with the deepest sound of the lot, perfect for when the sun has gone down and the party heads indoors.

Dena, born in Bulgaria and raised in Berlin, has released electronic dance-pop stylings on Kitsune Music and K7. Review: Toronto label Selections has become a firm favourite with house heads and now starts a nice sideline with its Special Edition 2023 series. This one welcomes Lea Lisa with her track 'Conversation Between Us' (Heide Club Mix) which is straight up underground house for the heads. Then comes an unreleased Javonntte remix of Evenn's 'One For Love' that pairs things back to raw dub essentials. Dan Only's 'Love Saturates' then gets a fine and formerly unreleased remix by Italy's Black Loops that has pristine drum programming and a fine bassline. Add in Sean Roman's jazzy dancer 'Sir William' and Jamn Ensemble's 'Convection' and you have a timeless house EP.

Review: West Yorkshire's finest house label Hudd Trax - named after Huddersfield, of course - kicks out more essential and timeless jams here with Eddie Leader at the helm. Kids in The Streets feature on this package which includes a single and several different versions. The original form of 'Pressure' is a lovely deep house groove with warming chord vamps and smoky vocals. There's a subtle skip to the drums that really locks you in, then comes an Instrumental Mix that makes more of the starry synth work. The dub has fatter, heavier low ends and a 90s New York vibe, then a Dubstrumental closes out another tidy package.

Review: The charitable people over at Slow To Speak are always generous, reissuing just about everything that was good in the 90s NY era, but for re-releasing Cherie Lee's "Love Me Or Leave", they probably deserve a medal. Four mixes here, starting with the Fly mixx - a feel-good house track containing those infectious lyrics we love so much. Review: Last summer, veteran singer/songwriter Mike Lindup dropped 'Time To Let Go', a delicious fusion of synth-pop, Afro-pop and dreamy soul that was set to feature on his long-promised follow-up to 1990 album Changes. Now Masters at Work man Louie Vega has got his hands on it and delivered a suite of fresh, club-ready reworks. Vega's EP-opening 'Expressions NYC Mix' does a great job in wrapping Lindup's original vocals, fluid pianos, chords and squelchy synth-bass around a snappy house groove, subtly re-framing it for peak-time floors. The 'Two Soul Afro House Fusion' mix is arguably even better, with Vega adding layers of delicious instrumentation to a Tony Allen-inspired Afro-house beat. Throw in a couple of instrumentals and a handy 'Beats' version and you have an excellent package.

Review: The artwork for this new 12" from the System 108 label is eccentric enough to make you want to check out the music even if you don't know the artists. It's the sort of cover that suggests the music will be left of centre and quirky and that it is. 'Sao Januario' is a deep and lazy groove with sunny chords and jazzy keys that take you to the global south. 'Sunny Villa On A Distant Planet' is a twisted disco cut with house leaning drums and big cowbells under intergalactic synth lines. 'Rolando Nascer Do Sol' then rides a crisp electro breakout to keep you on your toes and 'OWL WCS' slows down for a cuddly back-to-mine style closer.

Review: Liquid Earth is another alias for the cult underground house beat maker Urulu and here he lands on Kalahari Oyster Cult with another fine bit of futurist house. 'Scope Zone' is a great meeting point between cosmic synth work, spaced out breaks and retro house action. It's got a fat bassline that powers it onwards and some mice subtle prog melody. On the reverse is a Youandewan remix from the Berlin based Brit who is in superb form right now. He smooths things out, keeps the bounce and heads for the stars. A tidy two tracker for sure.

Review: A keystone label in the minimal and tech house world, Butter Side Up are yet to disappoint, adding another dazzling release to their collection, welcoming back Liquid Earth for 'Deputy Dog' - his second EP on the label. Exploring a sublime and spaced-out club sound, the LA-based artist is a new school mainstay, having previously appeared on the likes of renowned label Kalahari Oyster Cult and his own label project, Liquid Earth Physical. Tight punchy drums and swirling, interplanetary pads veer into view with the opening track '2 Tha Dance Floor'. Next up, the title track 'Deputy Dog' arrives as a wonky counterpart with bleeping and squeaking modulated beats dancing over a full-bodied bassline. On the flip side, 'Rim City' touches on a West Coast house sound with funk-infused chords and energetic, driving drums. Closing things up, 'Feels So Good (As It Should)' loosens things up, flowing between shimmering cymbals and a delicate, vapour-like synth melody, punctuating the track at points and then swerving out of view at other moments. A wonderfully varied release from a do-no-wrong label and an up-and-coming producer to get excited about.

Review: Whether she likes it or not, Sophie Lloyd will always be known for the unfeasibly uplifting gospel disco-meets-gospel-house anthem 'Calling Out'. That was released five years ago and ever since, she's struggled to embrace it's shadow. With 'Angels By My Side', Lloyd seems to have embraced this, delivering another fine gospel-powered number that inhabits a similar sonic space while being different enough to avoid accusations of treading water. It's genuinely good, too, with Pauline Taylor delivering superb lead vocals over a hybrid gospel disco/stomping gospel sound hybrid full of Hammond organ licks, booming bass guitar, piano house riffs and stirring orchestration. In other words, it's another anthem in waiting.

Review: The inaugural reals on Word To The Wise from Mah'Mood sold out in quick time. It was a super way to kick off the label and now the second EP six or so months later is just as good. It's a deep house exploration from Sebastiao Loopes that opens with a languid groove and some freeform synth work. The energy is pent up and the bass bulbous. Review: Put simply, Loose Ends' 1985 hit 'Hangin' On A String' is not only a peerless UK soul classic, but also one of the greatest boogie-era dancefloor cuts full stop. You should really already own a copy, but if you don't, then this South Side reissue should be on your shopping list. Not only does it contain the band's brilliant original extended mix (B2) - a sing-along gem rich in hazy organ sounds, jazzy guitar solos and bustling electro-era beats - but also two celebrated 1992 remixes from Frankie Knuckles. Both are amongst the late, great DJ/producer's finest remixes, with the more instrumental and impeccably loved-up 'Reprise' version, in which Knuckles builds gently before eventually unleashing chorus vocals, being our pick of an incredibly strong pair.

Review: This one has got an unlikely anthem written all over it from the Los Disco Duro. It features a pair of covers and the weird and wonderful A-side jam 'La Inconforme' is a steamy samba shuffler but with plenty of digital production touches and a roboticized vocal that is sure to hook in any sort of dance floor. Review: Back in 1996, Losoul's first outing on the now legendary Playhouse label caused such a stir across Europe and the U.S that it ended up being licensed and reissued - with additional reworks - by labels in Detroit and the Netherlands. This double-pack from Running Back brings together Losoul's original mix - a loopy, is-it-house-or-is-it-techno loop jam that cannily builds in intensity over the course of 11 and a half minutes - and two of the smartest revisions: Theo Parrish's mesmerising, deep and hypnotic revision (one of his best, we'd argue) and Dutch producer Gerd's jazzy, warm and sub-heavy shuffler. This lush EP draws together some brilliantly dusty deep house and seductively lo-fi hip hop onto one crucial 12" that is limited to just 100 copies. The nagging chords and melancholic bass of 'Cameron' sinks you into a reflective mood from the off then 'Hum' explores Theo Parrish-style realness and rawness. 'Untitled' is a short and sketchy skit and 'November' seduces with its busted beats. 'Fast Action' is all off-gird hits and daubs of synth and then there is romance in the air on 'Ta Teasha Love'.

Review: Josh Ludlow shows that he knows a thing or two about crafting superb arps and lush prog house records with this new outing on Nocturne Music. 'Mindways' is a brilliantly colourful opener with neon lines and bubbling sequences over fleshy drums. 'Touch' channels a bit of Metro Area style nu-disco production with its cowbells, textured bassline and late-night allure, and 'A Little Love' then gets more deep cut and steamy with some sensuous vocals and vast, pillowy kicks. Last of all is the more textural and raw tech-disco stepper 'Diska Tek!' to complete the package.

Review: Spaced Repetitions is a new label by veteran producer Manuel Tur who has always been known for his deliciously deep sound. For the imprint's fourth outing, he serves up two versions of a tune by Ingrid Lukas taken from last year's album ELUMELOODIA. The Estonian-Swiss singer, pianist and composer's angelic vocals remain in place up top as the dubby drums roll down low and all manner of icy synths and gassy melodic tinkles pepper the groove and get you into a celestial state of mind. Review: DJ Fede's second EP as Luv, Instrumorgan, has become something of a cult classic in recent times, with a new generation of DJs embracing the 1995 release's blend of New Jersey garage, NYC deep house and organ-rich Italo-house flavours. This reissue, then, is long overdue. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the deep and chunky groves, tight organ stabs and eyes-closed spoken word snippets of 'Instrumorgan 1 (Doc J Club Mix)', and the deeper, crunchier and more bass-heavy throb of 'Instrumorgan 2 (Fede's Mix)', to the jacking, drum machine-driven looseness of 'Instrumorgan 3 (Chicaho Mix)', where a lo-fi synth-sax motif adds an extra dose of late-night energy.

Review: After the first pressing sold out in quick time back in August, LA producer Luxury has done the right thing and opted to repress this collection of reworks. So, if you're after a touch of dancefloor opulence, this series in which he breathes new life into everything from yacht disco gems to platinum-selling rock anthems could be for you. The producer is in good form on volume five, variously offering up a swirling, gently dubbed-out and pleasingly Balearic take on a pop rock favourite ('Into The Future'), a throbbing revision of a poodle perm-sporting synth-pop/soft rock anthem ('Burn Burn Burn') and a chunky, tactile, disco-tinged, soft-focus re-imagining of the George Michael-esque ('Tonight'). Naturally, all are tastefully executed and add more than enough low-end weight to please contemporary dancefloors.
