The Wizard is getting a little reflective in his old age. While still remaining one of the Motor City's premier futurists, Mills has decided to inaugurate a series built around overlooked or hard-to-find gems from his vast back catalogue. He begins volume one by offering up a stomping and mind-altering "Unreleased Version" of 1993 horror-techno cut "Suspense", before allowing us a second chance to enjoy the off-kilter rhythms, dystopian electronics and melancholic organ chords of 1995 classic "Gamma Player". Over on side B, you'll find the metallic, industrial style percussion, deep space riffs and thrusting drums of "Transformation B (Rotwang's Revenge)" and what appears to be an alternative version of "Exhibitionist 2" track "Hydra & Synergy". The latter is arguably the most "sci-fi techno" cut on the EP.

On his third full-length outing for Ghost Box, Pye Corner Audio man Martin Jenkins offers up a sequel of sorts to 2016's "Stasis". While that featured music inspired by suspended animation, sleep and "cosmic exploration", "Hollow Earth" sees the admired experimentalist heading underground for a spot of "subterranean exploration" and "submerged psychology". Interestingly, while there are plenty of dark and immersive cuts throughout the album - see the John Carpenter style chug of "Descent", the quiet solitude of "Prismatic Gateway" and the clandestine throb of "Dancing Shadows" - it's nowhere near as pitch-black as you'd possibly expect. Instead, he plays around with melancholic melodies and quietly beautiful electronics, a blueprint that results in such poignant and picturesque cuts as "Deeper Dreaming", the bubbly "Mindshaft" and glassy-eyed "Surfacing".

Malka Tuti's latest must-check chunk of accessible experimentalism comes courtesy of Toresch member and Tolouse Low Trax collaborator Viktoria Wehrmeister. Under the Decha alias, she presents a solo debut that gleefully sidesteps conventional electronic music tropes. Musically, it's varied and intriguingly tropical in tone, with the presence of Wehrmeister's spoken word or freestyle vocals throughout unifying a nine-track set that variously doffs a cap towards minimalist electronic pop, indigenous South American instrumentation, droning ambient soundscapes, lo-fi electronica and pleasingly out-there soundscapes. As debuts go, "Hielo Boca" is arresting and impressive in equal measure. Recommended.

Rob - Rob (reissue)
LP
$18.23
Eight years on from its previous reissue (that time courtesy of Analog Africa's "Limited Dance Edition" series), Mr Bongo is offering up a fresh, licensed re-press of Rob's eponymous 1977 Afro-funk masterpiece. If you missed out in 2011, the set is definitely worth picking up because it's rock solid heat from start to finish. Check, for example, the heavily percussive Afro-beat/Afro-funk fusion of "Funky Rob Way", the flanged funk guitars and heavy brass action of "Boogie On", the jazz guitars and loved-up vocals of "Your Kiss Stole Me Away" and the William Onyeabor-does-James-Brown heaviness of closing cut "More".

Two Phase U - Face One
12"
$12.24
Andrew James Gustav's Marginal Returns label debuts with something rather special: the first every vinyl outing from Two Phase U aka Hernan Gonzalez, an obscure Uruguayan artist who previously produced one CD-only album "Techknowledge" way back in 1998. As you'd perhaps expect, there's a delightfully retro-futurist feel to the four tracks on show, which riff on various aspects of '90s electronic music and were apparently all made with period equipment. Our pick of the bunch is probably "Elevator", which sees the South American wrap emotive chords and cheery melodies around a snappy electro/braindance backing track, though the breakbeat-driven, R&S-goes-to-Detroit-via-Sheffield flex of "Fill U" is also impressive. You, though, may have other favorites; it's one of those EPs that includes four formidable tracks.

Telephones - From The Vaults 1998-2018 Vol 1
12"
$8.69
Norwegian producer Henning Severud AKA Telephones has decided to launch his own label. Fittingly, he handles the imprint's debut himself, dipping into his archive to serve up three tracks recorded at different times between 1998 and 2018. Our pick of a warm, colourful and loved-up bunch is "Aquatrak (FM AM Mix)", where jangling, Balearic house style piano riffs and dreamy chords splash around atop a chunky disco bassline and rolling drums. The quality threshold remains high throughout, though, with the '90s New Jersey-influenced deep house flex of "Amerikadegari (453-459 Mix)" and the late '80s Italian deep house vibes of "Hurricane (Purple Mix)" being almost equally as good.

Some tip-top Transatlantic business here, as EPM Music brings together Motor City legend Robert Hood AKA Floorplan, and veteran UK techno producer Mark Broom. There's a treat on side A as Broom finally allows us access to one of his secret weapons: a previously dubplate-only remix he did of the Floorplan gospel-techno throbber "Never Grow Old". Broom's version is tough and percussive, but also makes great use of rumbling bass, restless organ stabs and glassy-eyed late night rave riffs. Broom's own techno jack-track "Jungle" - a blizzard of distorted percussion and wild electronic noises - opens side B, before Hood offers up a chunky "Re-Plant" of classic Floorplan roller "He Can Save You". It not only features spoken word preacher-man vocals, but also a mind-altering riff reminiscent of Lil' Louis classic "French Kiss".
