On this latest single, he's tackling the mighty 'Spoonful', originally written by Willie Dixon and first made famous by Etta James, Howlin' Wolf and eventually Cream. Baker more than does the track justice, hitting a note somewhere close to The Doors' groovy kind of psychedelia, locking in so hard it has to stretch over both sides of the 7".

Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. It's a real dancer. Things get more impassioned on the high speed funk chase that is Rita Pavone's 'Il Geghege.'

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Review: Soul Junction's latest release brings together two sought-after heavy soul cuts from the studio of the Poindexter Brothers: their own 1969 heater "What I Did In The Street (I Should Have Done At Home)" - a sweet, Vibraphone-sporting slab of rasping, full-throated, horn-heavy sixties soul just dripping with emotion - and a killer cut they produced a year earlier for singer Vivian Copeland. You'll find that song, "Chaos In My Heart", on the A-side. Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Review: The reissue of Step On by Junior Dell & The D-Lites is here only three short years after its initial run of 300 copies. 'Step On' is a reggae and ska version of the song 'He's Gonna Step on You Again' by John Kongos, made famous by Happy Mondays, who shortened its title to 'Step On'. For the B-side comes an original song done by the band called 'Meanwhile On The 15th Floor' which is a classic sounding ska instrumental from the 70s. This second pressing is a mere 250 copies - so act fast.

Review: Guerssen Records specialise in reissuing obscure psychedelic music from the past, and here they home in on two early British psychedelic bands, Hopscotch and Andwella. 'Look At The Lights Go Up' is Hopscotch's contribution, with the band made up of former members of the Eyes and Tomorrow, and the track comes as a rare and unreleased demo of melodic trip-sat illumination and lyrical nonsensicality ("This lady from the forest of Manhattan...". Andwella's 'Felix' comes to the B-side, and is a formerly unreleased outtake from their second album World's End.

Review: Floyd James & The GT's 'Green Onions' is one of those seminal classics that defy age and categorisation and makes anybody who hears it move. It has the twisted rock riffs, the nice dusty Hammond organ leads, and a smooth rhythm section that just won't quit. Add in the funky midsection and you have everything you need to get a party started. To be honest the slightly more jazzy and free-swinging flipside 'On The Good Foot' ain't too bad either. Move fast with this one because there are only 200 copies and with this being such a perennially hot tune, they won't last long.

It's an upbeat rhythm that will get you on your toes with its energetic horns and riffs, swaggering drums and superb vocal work. On the flip of this limited 7" is, of course, 'In A While Crocodile'. It's a continuation of the a-side with just as much swagger and energy. Both tunes are essential and mark another fine drop from this great modern day outfit.

Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.

Review: The year is 1971 and The Ultimates are a vocal trio who record only two tunes. Lead by Monica Thornton, they reform in 1976 to record another two, and they they vanish. It's hard to know why given the goodness of their only four recordings. They have all become sought after classics that light up Northern Soul parties whiners they get dropped. Here the Brewery Town Beats label reissue the group's first EP having remastered both tunes. 'Gotta Get Out' is the high speed, high impact opening track with smooth backing vocals and the up tempo lead next to tight drum work. 'Why I Love You' slows down to a more sentimental blue eyed soul sound.

Born William Francis Washington in Evanston, Indiana, Geno joined the airforce marching band and, after leaving high-school, was transferred to England - a week before his 18th birthday. His previously unreleased session recording featured here is 'If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)' Also featured is 1965 Northern Soul number 'The Drifter', another unreleased Pye recording originally recorded in America in 1965. It was released in the U.K. the next year, where it was covered by English-Canadian Long John Baldry.
