  1. Sfarot (7:13)
  2. Sfarot (dub) (8:14)
  3. Harabait (6:22)
Review: This 12" marks the debut of Alek Lee, a previously unheralded producer from Tel Aviv. Happily, Sfarot is a hugely confident and beautifully produced first outing, full of tracks that gleefully defy easy categorization. Take the title track, for example; while its borderline foreboding electronics and bleeping notes scream techno, its tempo and low-slung groove are closer to dub disco. Then there's the choir of what appear to be Japanese children singing over the top. It's a curious combination of elements, but really rather good. The flipside Dub, which replaces the electronics with traditional middle-eastern instrumentation and emphasizes the dub-influenced bottom end, is also superb, while "Harabait" wraps haunting, delay-laden trumpet lines around a similarly shuffling dub disco groove.

  1. Alien Transmissions (4:42)
  2. Jargon (8:54)
  3. Gett Vffreakye (4:31)
  4. Tesseract (4:40)
Review: According to the sales notes accompanying this EP, little-known newcomer Volruptus "hails from outer space via Reykjavik". Given that the record is appearing on Bjarki and Johnny Chrome Silver's BBBBBB label, we're guessing that one of those two may be the otherworldly producer in question. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the Kraftwerkian vocoder vocals, booming electro beats and psychedelic acid lines of "Alien Transmissions", to the sweaty, up-all-night, braindance-meets-early-hardcore insanity of "Gett Vffreakeye". Elsewhere, "Tesseract" is an on-point exercise in Drexciyan electro with subtle nods towards vintage Orbital, and "Jargon" is an electro-inspired techno roller.

  11. Fad Gadget - "Back To Nature"
Review: Following editions from Young Marco and Motor City Drum Ensemble, techno giant Dettmann steps up to curate the third instalment of Denkmantel's Selectors series. Digging deep into his proto-techno, EBM, industrial and avant garde synth pop roots, it's a side to Marcel we often imagine and can easily perceive but seldom hear. Highlights include the soaring day dream production and aesthetic of "Happy Life" by Twice A Man, the drone cadences and harmonies of Kaa Antilope's "Rise Up Helicopter" and the nutty still-future sweatiness of Ministry's "Same Old Madness".

  7. Did You Hear The Owls Last Night (3:52)
  8. Yes But I Didn't Know They Were Owls (2:47)
Review: Given her rising reputation in recent years, it's something of a surprise to find that Rembo is Karen Gwyer's first full-length excursion since 2013's Kiki The Wormhole on Opal Tapes. While that latter set was impressive, Rembi is arguably even better. For starters, Gwyer refuses to settle on one groove, following a glistening ambient opener with a fuzzy, IDM-influenced chunk of left-of-centre dancefloor techno, which in turn makes way for a beat-less slab of hazy synthesizer positivity. It's a pattern that continues throughout, as the talent American producer delivers bustling, redlined techno jams laden with dirt-encrusted synthesizer motifs, spacey IDM club tracks and picturesque electronic soundscapes that sidestep easy categorization.

  4. Meditation In Baltimore (5:17)
Review: French duo in London Nummer are back on their eponymous imprint with some esoteric and tripped out jams that take you deep into the exotic. On the A side we have "Out Of The Darkness" a slow burning exercise in hypnotism with shamanic qualities, and the heady tribal trance of "Primal Fire": if the subtle acid flashes won't grab you, the polyrhythms certainly will. On the flip, the neon lit balearica of "Ajaja Rhythmus" over its glorious 11 minute duration had us rather impressed. As did "Meditation In Baltimore" which is the EP's finest moment. This evocative and bittersweet jam features some rolling tribal rhythms beneath some celestial synths and soothing pads, which are altogether quite brilliant indeed.

  5. Shiba Inu Dub (7:29)
Review: Max Ravitz (aka Patricia) produces techno with a wide-eyed exploratory flair. He says that as an instrument, the synthesizer is designed to theoretically reproduce any imaginable structure of sound. However he's always been much more interested in sound design than being able to 'play well,' and the synth allows for a slow and thoughtful approach towards crafting sound. He allows his machines to speak for themselves. Several Shades Of The Same Color is Ravitz' first album for Spectral Sound: produced in conjunction with his own label Active Cultures. Each of the three LPs feature tracks that comprise their own distinct, unique worlds. The second disc's highlights include the frightening slow burner "The Electric Eye Is Upon Me" (which sounds like it was lifted from aB grade '80's horror flick), the tunnelling new wave coldwave of "Thoughts Of You" or the dusty low end sludge of "Shiba Inu Dub" which is Ravitz' interesting perspective of deep techno.

  1. Make Them Remember (7:21)

  3. A Future Not Materialized (9:07)
Review: Martin Schacke is probably more known for his work under such charming aliases as Cum Dump or Prostitutes Of The 19th Century. He returns to Ectotherm: the Copenhagen based label run by Mamma Snake (Apeiron Crew) and Courtesy. It's a speedy, heavyweight three tracker consisting of a rough, percussion-driven and floor ready tracks and featuring creepy sounds and emotive melodies. The title track is a galloping stomper with rapid fire rhythms and a manic rave style melody that will really throw you against the wall, while "Life Is Absurd" has Berghain or Culture Box in mind on this furious 130 BPM adrenaliser. The energy is harnessed and restrained on the flip with "A Future Not Materialized". It's the EP's highlight which shows off Schacke's ability to create a sturdy track that creates strobed out and tunnelling moments while not letting up on the energy level.

Everything is covered from Hatti Vatti's fractured beat twist of "Figure" to the warm dubby bounces of the brilliantly titled "Magic Marmalade" via the hip-slinking jack of "New Life". Finally New York's finest pharmacist Brendon Moeller joins to help tell the final chapter with a pensive suspense piece where the drums are not what they seem. Change: don't fear... Shed a tear.

  1. Track 1 (7:54)
  2. Track 2 (6:25)
Review: If you're a tech fiend it doesn't really get better than this; the big, bad, bold and often mysteriously positioned Shed is back with another slice of Equalized funk in what is now an instantly recognisable white label. That font, those stamps, that sound - it's back for the series 6th instalment and, as you'd expect, Shed has reinvented himself once again here. His familiarly jagged percussion flex is still very much in place on both tracks, but he's meandered onto more sombre, less direct territories that tap into the shadier, more obscure sides of techno. "Track 1" is a deep, progressive bombshell that pounds its bass drums to a mild-mannered sequence of harmonies, whereas the more punishing "Track 2" reverts to the man's more prototypical formula - that is, a electrifying swarm of bass surrounded by killer drums and his trademark hypnotism. Wonderful, as per usual.

  8. Petter B - "Isgrus" (6:39)
Review: Ukrainian techno stable Raw Raw has pushed the boat out on this 12th release, in the process delivering a double-pack full of tried-and-tested dancefloor movements. Amongst the eight tracks you'll find numerous highlights, including the distorted drums and Drexciyan melodies of Sleeparvhive's "Hide", the kick-drum driven alien funk intensity of Eric Fletcher's "Transcendent Wisdom", and the energy-packed hypnotism of Joton's "Diagram", which comes on like Brown Album-era Orbital dragged kicking and screaming through Berghain at eight in the morning. Best of all, though, is the TB-303 driven techno psychedelia of Petter B's "Isgrus", which is almost capable of triggering vivid dancefloor hallucinations.

  1. Track 1 (8:22)

Review: SUED was birthed back in 2011 with a pair of 12" singles jointly produced by SW (Stefan Wust) and SVN (Sven Rieger). Since then, the label has gone from strength to strength, but collaborations between Wust and Rieger have been a rare commodity. This two-tracker, then, is keenly anticipated. As is now customary on SUED releases, they've not bothered with track names, instead just getting straight down to business via the dubby deep house warmth of "Track 1", where short bursts of hardcore-era breakbeats and arm-swinging drum fills help keep the energy levels high. "Track 2" is an altogether deeper and more mind-altering affair, with fluttering ambient house synth riffs wrapping themselves around another typically dub-wise deep house groove.

This is proper bangin' material from start to finish, kicked off with the liquid-like patterns of "Cow", a grungy house banger masterminded by heavy folds of mutant bass and crusty drums; "Muffin" splits the tempo down to a magnificently awkward broken beat with a deep, off-kilter sensibility. On the flip, "Cool" travels under a much murkier, more swamped sort of disguise, while "Cheese" is barely able to contain its inebriated groove from melting apart amid distorted tape hiss and loose instrumentation, which leaves "Mountain" to provide a little disco comfort to this mighty fine, utterly loopy EP of true-school house music.

  4. Body Work (8:32)
Review: Mint Condition's choice of material to reissue is always on-point. It would be fair to say that Blake Baxter's "When We Used To Play", which was first appeared on Kevin Saunderson's KMS imprint back in 1987, is another inspired choice. While not quite as celebrated as other early Motor City jams produced by the "Belleville Three" (messers Atkins, May and Saunderson), the "Original Extended Version" boasts all the hallmarks of the then developing Detroit techno sound (think crunchy drum machine beats, restless cymbals, undulating bass and a smattering of sci-fi melodies). It comes accompanied by the obscure, electro-influenced "Bootleg Breakbeat Mix" (almost as good), a rolling and on-point Blake Baxter rework and a sweaty, Chicago style jack-track inspired by Ron Hardy's performances at the Music Box ("Body Work").

Review: Fresh from his gritty analogue adventures on the likes of Boys Noize's BNR and I Love Acid, Venezuelan sonic shapeshifter and uncompromised texture blender Cardopusher makes his debut on The Hacker's Zone imprint. Once again it's a visceral, physical odyssey that's tailored for the latest hours in the darkest rooms. Highlights include the sense-tricking paranoia of "Trouble With Too Much Acid", the bone snapping kicks and rising hook of "Blast Cut" and the stark, stripped back metallic rhythm of "Regulate".

Review: Thule's dark doppelganger AE Recordings was revived last year with the excellent Freyja EP by NonniMal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from Cold. Much like the vibe on Thule, the music on Thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there's definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from Cold. "Aerials" is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while "Phased Out" lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. "Exiles" is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average Thule jam.

  5. Andromeda Complex - "The Servant" (Klankman remix)
Review: Latest in the run of downright deviant activities from the Contort Yourself camp is this new collection of old and new industrial tinged bangers, leading in with the excellent noirish heat of Eindkrak's slow-stepping "Shawarma". Andromeda Complex's mid-90s rhythm-fest sits in stark, functional contrast before GDL's own contemporary rhythm science sends the record spinning in a reverie of surprisingly light-footed percussion. Circling Vultures are too enjoying the mean tempered intensity of focused drum machine programming before Klankman rounds the record off with a slightly squelchy remix of Andromeda Complex's "The Servant".

Review: No sleep for the wicked; Bristol Bandulu man Hi5ghost adds to Hotline's blazing fire with this singular and somewhat brutal escapade. Trappy kicks, halloween humanizations, treacle subs and a wavy bass hook that weaves and bobs in a grimey style, this one hits the chest hard. Remix-wise Hodge's Swedish affiliate Pedder Mannerfelt adds a harder step and technoid energy to proceedings for added bite. Sweet dreams.

Review: True Toronto history; Strobe's first ever release from the decorated bossman Ron Allen and psyentific lab partner Hayden Andre. All versions are present in their 1991 glory; Hayden's bleep funk tech and Ron's housier takes on "Metamorphosis", the sci-fi synth feels and finger clicking funk of "Spectre" take over the B while two era-defining takes on "Falling From The Light" and cascading acid house classicality of "Calibrate This" hold up on the b. Dark, Detroitian and devilishly simple, this still sounds future after 26 years...

Review: Bulgarian house wizard KINK is back and, of course, he's all about delivering the shadiest forms of dance floor music humanely possible. The man is a master at twisting and pushing house music to its very limits, something which is obvious from the start of "Soda Caustic", a nutty 4/4 banger boasting a curious new strain of acid at its core. "Synesthesia" barely even forms a groove out of its solitary bleeps and bass buds, whereas "Daddy Acid" takes a little poke at AFX's improbable mishmash of Goa trance and gabber junglism - we love this one. The B-side boasts "The Roots Of Techno", a kinetic array of machine noise and robotic beats, while "Antitune" makes some of Photek's early work seem antiquated by comparison. This EP has it all. Warmly recommended.

Review: Since delivering a surprise debut album back in 2016, Eric Miller has been one of Sushitech's most reliable artists. Predictably he's in fine form again on Fragments, a three-part trip into early morning Teutonic techno territory. "Fragments 1", a nine-minute roller whose melodic elements attractively rise and fall throughout, is arguably the peak-time selection, if only for the sturdiness of the beats and the quietly picturesque nature of the bobbing synth loops. "Fragments 2" includes some quietly pulsating acid lines and a rhythm track closer to Romanian tech-house than deep techno, while "Fragments 3" is an ultra-deep chunk of early morning hypnotism.

Review: Berlin's Noha is back with a great three tracker for Archie Hamilton's vinyl only imprint Moss Co: a division of Moscow Records. The Nabuco boss serves up the slinky and hypnotic tech house of "Loop Di Mare" on the A side: with its sleek arpeggios and rolling rhythms bringing the heat. On the flip, there's the strongly percussive and deeply dubby house that you've come to know from the label on "Cat", while head honcho Hamilton himself appears with a remix up next. His version is rolling and funky with the main room at pre-peak time in mind: White Isle here we come!

Review: The limited, hand-stamped presentation of the Canoe releases matches the music contained within, all grainy and unusual but utterly tooled up for the club. Nyra's pet project is providing a fascinating insight into the make up of this ever emerging artist, and tracks like "Opening Rhyme" are sure to pique interest from all kinds of adventurous spinners. While the track may start in a kind of looped up deep house headspace, after the breakdown it takes an unexpected, thrilling swerve into twitchy acid. "Tape Trek" is more overt in its surreality with its layers of pitched speech getting run through the mill and splashed over a primal drum machine beat. "Galaktik" meanwhile has a touch of old skool rave about it, but it's far from an obvious throwback track. Suffice it to say, we'll have whatever Nyra's having.

Review: Proof of the rude health of the Australian underground abounds with this new label from Phile, who step out with a self-titled debut EP that tells you all you need to know. This is searing, brutalist techno crafted with invention and imagination - the dense crackle of the beats and scorched peals of synth on "Found In Blood" are a visceral force to behold. "Marauder" is mellow by comparison, furnishing a minimal beat with live bass, dramatic string licks and steadily building atmospherics. The analogue dirt of "Abhor" is positively evil, and that's before Karina Utomo's none-scarier vocals come into play. Brimming with personality and demanding of your attention, Phile made themselves a duo to watch in one fell swoop.

Review: Thule are on an unstoppable roll at the moment, both mining the archive and doing a great service to the next generation of techno producers in Iceland. The deep, dubby headspace most readily associated with the label continues in abundance with the emergence of Waage, who under the tutelage of Thule old guard Exos has taken to production like a natural. There's a supremely reduced air about "W1", but the rubbery bassline simply can't be argued with. The dub techno tropes are out in full force on "W2" though, with some sumptuous chords that come on like cracking ice. "W3" then pushes even further out into that heady space where minor key chords can never have enough reverb before the sinister, simmering creep of "W4".
