The Magick Box EP (hand-stamped 12" limited to 200 copies)

  1. Kobalt (8:04)
  2. Curviture (6:08)
  3. Bleepanomix (5:42)
  4. Floating On Salt Water (4:07)
Review: NRK Sound Division head honcho Nick Harris aka A Sagitarriun returns on his own Elastic Dreams imprint with more retro inspired techno grooves on The Magick Box EP. Starting out with the loopy, dusted down, vintage sounding funk of "Kobalt", the A side is then further complimented by the rather Sahko sounding bleep techno of "Curviture" which will have you truly hypnotised by its nefarious aesthetics. On the flip, there's the thumping and functional minimal techno workout "Bleepanomix" which channels the spirit of classic Robert Hood and "Floating On Saltwater" offers an odd highlight with this haunting electro-funk workout full of rusty drum computer patterns and the unmistakeable vintage flair of analogue arpeggiations.

  3. It Lives Below (6:09)
  4. To Breath Under Water (7:18)
Review: Acronym's techno flavours get more diverse with each new release, and it has to be said that the producer is stacking up a seriously impressive catalogue now. With a constant stream of releases for labels like Semantica and Northern Electronics, he has stepped out of the shadows and into our most calibrated radars here at Juno HQ; this has also been an important move in promoting his own Dimensional Exploration label, a unit reserved solely for his own sonic experiments. This is the fourth instalment in the series, and Acronym has clearly stocked up the right amount of energy for these four diverse and sublime slices of techno hedonism. As such, "Submarine K-221" unleashes a subtle, broken techno rhythm driven by a strangely tropical sample that rotates around a sharp slew of percussion, which drops into the comparatively more contained bleeps and punches of "Off The Grid". The flip side starts off screaming and squelching all over the place with the cavernous "It Lives Below", whereas "To Breath Under Water" injects a subtly dubbed-out, refreshingly aqueous groove that reminds us of Dozzy's Aquaplano project. Lush.

  3. Scanner - "Eros (Bitten By The Black Dog)" (5:51)
  4. The Future Sound Of London - "Monolith" (4:00)
Review: The seventh and final instalment of De:Tuned's brilliant Unboxed Brain series - an unashamed tribute to 1990s IDM and ambient techno featuring contributions from many of the artists who defined that scene - is predictably special. It features a slew of new remixes of previously released tracks, plus "Monolith", a previously unreleased ambient track from the Future Sound of London that's every bit as weird, wonderful and out there as the duo's greatest work. Elsewhere, Kirk Degiorgio (as Future/Past) and Mark Broom both drag B12's "World's End" towards the dancefloor (the latter providing a punchy electro re-make), while The Black Dog provides a brilliantly blissful, string-drenched ambient interpretation of Scanner's "Eros".

  3. Hartz Einz (Guirocid) (7:29)
  4. Sonarr (7:12)
Review: Boneless One and the Computer Controlled imprint from Belfast seem to have found each other at exactly the right point in time, and nothing is sweeter than when the timing on a release is spot on. The former has been delivering grievous levels of house and techno over the last few seasons, while the latter has been picking up a noticeable momentum thanks to releases from peeps like Holland's DJ Overdose, Mark Forshaw, and the always excellent TX Connect. This particular bag of killers starts off with the malevolent tones of "Acid Chops", a 303-fuelled beatdown rounded off by a noxious level of distortion, but it's "Communication Crackdown Phase 2" that turned our heads this morning thanks to its instantly seductive digi melodies and swinging blockade of drums. "Hartz Einz (Guirocid)" resides on flip, and it's a fiery, unforgiving bundle of mutant acid swings mashed backed by a classic set of deadly 4/4 beats; that ride into hell is followed by an equally uncompromising artillery of Bunker-style acid via "Sonan". Mean and certainly not lean...

  3. Stereoscope (David Hausdorf remix) (8:06)
Review: Ennio Colaci is an Italian DJ and producer that is one of the founders of Bosconi Records. For German imprint Dreiklang, he gives us "Stroboscope" a cyclical and hypnotic dub techno journey that bears similarities to fellow countrymen/greats such as Marco Carola on his Question series or likewise David Squillace's Sketch back at the turn of the millennium. Spanish master trance inducer Tadeo works his magic as always: the guy runs the brilliant Cyclical Tracks imprint: so he know's what he's doing! Finally minimood's David Hausdorf takes the track down an even dubbier route for you to chill out and roll one up to: do a bit of travelling without moving! Following up great releases previously on the label by OCH and Edit Select, this label is on to good things.

  3. Etern (9:15)
Review: By his own productive standards, White and Giegling regular Edward (AKA Desert Sky man Gilles Aiken) has been pretty quiet of late. Shockingly, Shufflehead is his first EP since 2015. The title track, which stretches out for 11 minutes across the A-side, is an unusual concoction, to say the least. Built around loose, tropical percussion loops, layered field recordings, creepy noises and an off-kilter electronic bassline, it sits somewhere between humid minimal techno and some of Dominick Fenrow's more ambient moments. Flip for the EBM style electronic funk of "Dekta", and the Black Merlin/Berceuse Heroique style tribal wonkiness that is "Etern".

  3. Myriads (6:46)
Review: There are few surprises on Luke Hess's latest vinyl outing on Echochord's colour series, just a trio of fluttering, tried-and-tested techno workouts. Opener "Emerald" boasts a typically trippy and hypnotic groove, but also some heart-aching chord progressions and suitably melancholic melody lines. The late night hypnotism is also present on the slightly more boisterous "Lumen", in which the producer fires darting synthesizer lines and cyclical melody loops at a locked-in groove. In a possible bid to impress those who like their techno funkier and more forthright, he reaches for the foreboding acid lines and pounding kick-drums on cymbal-heavy closer "Myriads".

  3. Out Of Sight (7:47)
Review: The last time we heard from Nick Hoppner, he was collaborating with Japanese veteran Gonno. Here he returns to Ostgut Ton with his first solo EP since the release of the Folk album in 2015. He begins with A-side "Box Drop", a typically Berlin-style techno shuffler full of dubbed-out riffs, relentless cymbal hits and subtle melodic variations. It's muscular and full-throttle, but with enough wavy elements to work at home as well as in the club. On the flip you'll find the Motor City positivity of "Still" - all life-affirming melody lines, colourful chords and gentle acid lines - and the grandiose, soundscape techno thrills of the equally melodious "Out of Sight".

  1. Maur (6:43)

  3. Svever (6:09)
Review: Copenhagen-based label Ectotherm is looking like an increasingly interesting prospect thanks to a string of electronic releases spanning the full electronic belt, and all of them emanating from a sublime, homegrown selection of new talents. After Rune Bagge's excellent jungle-IDM escapades, debut artist Ibon rolls through with a devilish techno punch entitled "Maur", a fast, slick 4/4 bruiser with a myriad of evil bleeps that reminds us of peeps like Regis or Jeff Mills back in the golden days of dance industrialism. The material on the flip ain't too shabby either, though, as "No Cry" enters what we like to refer to as 'a downward spiral of euphoric dread', and "Svever" carries forth a magnificently crunchy swing of beats accompanied by a rather ominous yet meditative swarm of gentler melodies.

Review: After building his reputation via releases on Plus 8 and M_nus, amongst others, Julian Jeweil has secured a big-money move to Drumcode. As you'd expect, all four tracks on this first label outing tend towards the forthright, with title track "Rolling" - a sweaty fusion of booming arpeggio bass, pounding kick-drums, foreboding riffs, metallic hits and drum machine handclap fills - setting the agenda. The "build and drop techno" blueprint is explored further on "Venice", before the experienced Frenchman opts for some full-throttle antics on "Blue". Sensing listeners need a little bit of a breather, he dips the tempo a little on "Traffic", which boasts some deliciously psychedelic acid lines.

For this release, Roua Diminetii, Kaleh blends watery field recordings and warbling, dubbed out synths with the minimal and shuffling grooves patented to the deeper house sounds of eastern Europe. An accomplished debut.

Review: Kreon & Lemos continue their exploration of dubby motifs and crafty beat programming on this latest missive for Equivalence, and at this point it's safe to say anything could be possible from the adventurous Greek duo. Each of the artists has a side across which to express their own vision of "Avatone", starting off with Kreon. The urgency of the funky breakbeat rhythms powering both versions is hard to resist, with Kreon's version ramping up the nagging synth lines in between the drums while Lemos opts for a more meditative refrain around the intricate percussion.

  3. Harabait (6:22)
Review: This 12" marks the debut of Alek Lee, a previously unheralded producer from Tel Aviv. Happily, Sfarot is a hugely confident and beautifully produced first outing, full of tracks that gleefully defy easy categorization. Take the title track, for example; while its borderline foreboding electronics and bleeping notes scream techno, its tempo and low-slung groove are closer to dub disco. Then there's the choir of what appear to be Japanese children singing over the top. It's a curious combination of elements, but really rather good. The flipside Dub, which replaces the electronics with traditional middle-eastern instrumentation and emphasizes the dub-influenced bottom end, is also superb, while "Harabait" wraps haunting, delay-laden trumpet lines around a similarly shuffling dub disco groove.

  3. Heretic Chant (5:23)
  4. Noc (4:49)
Review: Jurg Haller's Montreal-based label Forbidden Planet has consistently provided us with nothing but the absolute truth since its inception back in 2013. Where so many 'outsider' house labels fall short in repetition and monotony, Forbidden Planet never fails to deliver the goods, and house and techno aren't used just for the sake of it here. Instead, Haller's selection of artists always manage to craft a singular niche out of their arrangements. This time it's newcomer Lumpex who enters the catalogue, and these four belters are as cerebral as you can get without steering completely away from the dance. "Metro" should have been the theme track to the opening sequence of Akira, full of dread and dystopian beauty, while "The Purge" drops a raw, hollow baseline that would have made the likes of Ed Rush and Optical proud back in the Metalheadz days. "Heretic Chant" opens the B-side with a bubbling stream of sinister low frequencies amid an ocean of metallic percussion elements, and "Noc" goes for the jugular thanks to its gnarly, relentless fusion of warehouse beats and apocalyptic bass tones. An eye-opening affair.

Review: Mystic Bill's heritage reaches right back to the legendary Trax Records, stopping off at veritable institutions such as Classic, Relief and Snuff Trax on the way through to the present day. Still the man known as William Torres to his mother is ploughing on with a new swathe of productions that retain the roughshod flair of his early work, making for a natural fit on Crimes Of The Future. There's a feisty, freaky spirit coursing through the veins of "Frequency 9", while "The Ship Is Sinking" is equally unhinged in its disposition. Throw in a remix by Scott Fraser for good measure and you've got yourself a winner.

Review: Back in July, hardware fetishists and acid house revivalists Paranoid London returned with We Come To Rock, their first 12" single for three years. Here they build on that success with two more razor-sharp, 303-enhanced hardware jams for sweat-soaked basements and pitch-black warehouses. Of the two, it's the more ragged and psychedelic "Our Man Though" that hits home hardest, thanks largely to the combo layering waves of twisted acid lines on top of distorted, teak-tough drum machine beats. "Give Me The" is a little more sedate in comparison, but still impresses thanks to its smart combination of a menacing groove, pitched-down vocal samples, and occasional, undulating acid motifs.

Review: March has kicked off with some stellar house and techno pieces, but a return from the Parassela crew has made this the best month in a long while. We'd been truly missing this collaborative project between The Analogue Cops and Blawan, three minds which together helped to truly instil a sound within the contemporary house and techno game over the last five years. If you're listening to raw, stripped-back house these days, it's down to projects such as Parassela; that post-2010 wave of goodness very much includes these guys in the list. They return for one of their inimitable faux white labels on the Cops' own mighty Restoration label, and it's clear that they crew had been missing each other's company as of late. "Track 1" is classic Parassela nastiness thanks to a dark, intricate mould of hardware beats and distorted melodies with that unmistakable, tape-kissed hiss, and "Track 2" delivers more of the same except that the groove is more minimal here. On the flip, "Track 3" injects more of a house-centric movement into the equation, while "Track 4" heads off into sparser, more desolate territories that remind us of just how multi-talented this group of producers are. Unmissable, really...

Review: Young Brighton producer Slacker (no not the legendary progressive house act of the same name) aka Sam Black is up next on Lobster Theremin following up great releases by Asok, nthng and Unfinished Portraits. He's channelling the jungle vibes of yesteryear (think Peshay) on the classic euphoria of "Amen To The Lonely" while acid house/Summer of Love aesthetics are channeled convincingly on "See Yourself" and capturing that classic Lobster Theremin tape saturated vibe. On the flip, it's all about the deep 303 therapy of "White Monk" where he works that little silver Roland box to the max, powered away by dusty 808 drum patterns beneath.

  3. Wahrheit #3 (7:36)
Review: More rusty, dusted down analogue techno shenanigans courtesy of Lux Rec diffusion label MRT, following up great releases by Mitchell Goor and A Bleak Reality. This time its over to Bjorn Magnusson aka Steinzeit who delivers the tough, mid range techno tool "Wahrheit #1" which is a great record to make transitions with. Next up is the rich and chunky electro soul of "Wahrheit #2" which will appeal to Dopplereffekt fans. Finally on the flip there's the slow acid techno of "Wahrheit #3" which sounds just as good on +8 if you really want to push the crowd, sounding like Hawtin circa '93 at the Packard Plant. Definite Plus 8 vibe on this one, we were really digging it!
