  3. Dyslexia (4:52)
  4. Earring (10:05)
Review: New one by New Yorker and co-founder of Exotic Dance Records Jiovanni Nadal aka J. Albert for Opal Tapes vinyl offshoot. This is gritty urban techno reflecting on street life in Gotham City. On the A side we got the squealing and hissing grind of "Bloo N Red" followed by the sublime and broken house of "Ting Waan"; absolutely loved this bittersweet and emotive piece. On the flip "Dyslexia" has that haunting and dusty attic jam style, much like fellow NYC hero Patricia and then "Earring"; equally nailing that particular aesthetic too but with more of an industrial edge with its textured and metallic rhythms doing a fine job.

Review: Mille Plateaux, Tetsuya Nakamura's second Arc of Doves album, has long been in demand amongst both ambient and dub techno aficionados. Originally released back in 2010 in limited numbers and subsequently reissued in 2014, Rohs! Records have finally succumbed to pressure and given it a third release, albeit in ultra-limited quantities. Listening for the first time, it's easy to see why the album is held in such high esteem. The ambient tracks are atmospheric, picturesque and enveloping, Nakamura finding a near perfect balance between poignancy and positivity, while the dub techno excursions are far breezier and attractive than the sound design-obsessed fare served up by many within the scene. There are only 100 of these floating around, so grab one while you can.

Review: Since being released on an ultra-limited pressing of 50 CD-Rs back in 2015, Aura Fresh's Beyond The Five Senses album has been changing hands for significant sums online. This has prompted Rohs! Records to give the set the reissue treatment, this time manufacturing more than enough copies to go round. The set remains one of the most impressive dub techno albums of recent times, with Aura Fresh moving from deep space ambience (see superb opener "Beyond The Five Senses") to the Rhythm & Sound headiness of "Eazy", via a string of fine dub techno workouts. Laden with Echospace style surface noise, ocean-deep basslines and trippy, locked-in grooves, it's a set that will entertain and relax you in equal measure.

Review: The Blacknecks project from Truss and Bleaching Agent has instilled some much needed humour into contemporary techno at a time when morose press shots, press releases filled with 'uncompromising' patter, and morbid aesthetics have become the prevailing trend. Originally an anonymous project, Blacknecks is now put to bed with the arrival of this sixth and final vinyl transmission and the pair are going out in style with a double pack that is perhaps their best work together. It's certainly possesses the most distinctive cover art illustration you'll see this month and the eight tracks within bristle with gut punching rhythms and aggressive basslines - all done with a knowing wink of course.

Review: Founder and owner of Still Music Jerome Derradji finally makes his debut on the label with a pumping two-tracker for the dancefloor. "Wurk It" is a fast-paced, acid-laced techno monster reminiscent of the mid-90's Dance Mania sound that was coming out of Chicago then. On the flip, "Acid Nothing" is relatively tamer but nonetheless abrasive thanks to its menacing drops of 303 goodness. Quality.

Review: DJ Guy, or Guy Evans as his friends know him, is one of those low key producers who has only recently been unearthed from the 90's, much like Frenchman Iueke. It was Glasgow's All Caps that got his noticed last year with a masterful EP and he returns herein with another single for Copenhagen's Cejero, home to releases by The Sun God aka Jamal Moss and Robert Turman, among others. The sounds are gritty, the melodies are organic and there's a distinctly sci-fi feel to Guy's grooves. This is machine music at its finest, emanating straight from the source and onto your turntables; our picks form the four nuggets have to be the beatless sonics of "White Tape Trk 1" and the bleepy hypnotics on "Basf Ferro Trk 3". We recommend you to be quick as this is kinda limited..!

  2. Ice 597 To Frankfurt (6:11)
  3. Katzbach Gruv (6:27)
  4. Train Ride To Berlin (6:43)
Review: The East Coast's house don DJ Jus-Ed is, as always, on an unstoppable run of form. His latest bundle of club-friendly tunes comes on his own Underground Quality, of course, and it's four tracks from the man himself - preaching the gospel like only he knows how! Starting with "Acid Fro", the mood is darker and more hypnotic than his usual approach - this is a proper belter in every sense of the word - while "Ice 597 To Frankfurt" is more minimal, wavey and utterly pouncing. Flip the record and you got the melancholic melodica of "Katzback Gruv", another stomping club affair for the earlier set times, and "Train Ride To Berlin", a jittery, percussion-driven bit of neo-tribalism. Hot, as always. Don't miss this!

Review: DJ Qu - AKA New York-based producer Ramon LIsandro Quezada - has been doing his thing since the mid-2000s, delivering spacey deep house cuts that join the dots between the soulful warmth of Glenn Underground and the far-sighted futurism of Detroit techno. There's more stargazing fare to be found on his latest EP. "Raw 7" has a real sci-fi feel, with alien synths melodies and outer-space stabs riding a powerful, cymbal-driven rhythm. "Untitled (High Life)" is a little more relaxed, with picturesque electronic melodies complimenting a dense, afro-influenced house groove. It's floor-friendly enough, but positive enough for home listening, too. Finally, "Soma" is thrillingly deep, transporting listeners to the far reaches of the galaxy via endless chords and shuffling percussion.

Review: It's astonishing to think that Frak's Borft Records has now notched up three decades. The Swedish imprint remains as eccentric and essential as ever, as this label debut from inspired Norwegian oddball DJ Sotofett proves. By his standards, "Ol Pa Ibiza" and the stripped back "Ol Pa Klubb" are pretty straightforward, with the Sex Tags man laying ricocheting dub notes and percussion hits over a rock solid drum track and booming bassline. "Ol Pa SM-Art Bar" sees him channel the spirit of early British bleep techno and the darker end of Belgian new beat on a clandestine mid-tempo chugger, while "Drikkepause" is a quick-fire shot of ambience built around echoing bells. Finally, he heads for a dirty warehouse on the acid-laden, EBM informed sleaziness of "Nekta Ol Par City Club".

  4. Ekman - "Philopannyx" (7:40)
Review: Berlin residents Kuno and Spaceinvasion have been deploying some sublimely evil cuts on their Terminal Operations label since they kicked the damn project off, and things look like they're taking an even nastier turn thanks to this collaborative release between Fallbeil and Holland's Ekman. The latter has been very active over the last few years, and we particularly liked the man's releases for Will Bankhead's TTT so this feels like the right sort of imprint for the producer to be branching out to next. Fallbeil kicks off the A-side with two devilish electro cuts, steeped in a deep distortion that successfully renders them utterly noxious on the loudspeakers, and ready for some pulverising action on the floor. Over on the flip, Ekman's "Nemein" spews 303-licked acid all over the shop, rounded off by cleverly detuned cowbells and toms, whereas "Philopannyx" strips the distortion back to make room for an eerie, subtly acid jam from the depths of the inferno. Bad.

Review: The Only One imprint returns with their sixth instalment of the series after a bunch of absolute winners by the likes of Ron Trent and Stasis, among others. For this latest outing they've invited Orlando Voorn down with his Format project, which means deep house beats and sci-fi-leaning melodies. The winner on here has to be "Destination", where gorgeous pads unwind beneath swinging slabs of percussion and a militant, heads-down beat structure. This is Voorn at his best and we love to see the man putting out some proper house music alongside his more usual techno shade.

Review: Is 2015 Batu's year? The Bristol producer first served notice of his talents for mutated, bass-led techno back in 2013 with a pair of standout 12"s for Cold Recordings and Livity's reverse sub-label. After some time out of the spotlight, Batu has returned with renewed vigour this year as new and exciting 12"s have popped up on Hotline and Beneath's Mistry. The establishment of his own Timedance label seems an important part of the Batu story too and this second release finds him adopting the A&R mantle to introduce L. Sae. Admittedly no newcomer, L. Sae is the latest production handle of Joe Higgins, a UK producer previously known for his output under the Metrist name for labels such as Fifth Wall and Resin. This two track 12", The West End As It Will Be, sees Matthews veer off into more abstract techno terrain, especially the title track which is caked with tape dust. A great 12" this.

Review: Dutch imprint Bio Rhythm has been on fire of late, serving up thrillingly muscular and intense 12" singles from Africans With Mainframes, Marco Bernadi, Brassfoot and DeViere. Here, they introduce us to the previously unheralded Mirror Man, an alias for a "mean mother f*cker" who is better known under his usual pseudonym. Whoever's behind the project is clearly not happy, because A-side "Blood Is Truth (Metaphenethylamine Mix)" is a bleak treat, with stomach-churning electronics and druggy arpeggio lines riding a sturdy but hissing techno rhythm. Leaders Of The Wild Hunt go for a slightly more musically expansive approach on their remix, which boasts snappier drum machine hits, bittersweet chords, and all manner of melancholic melodies.

Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint is back with some painfully killer material! Martins Rokis aka N1L makes his debut with six slices of freaked-out electronics and vaporous industrialism, all wrapped up in a familiarly UIQ sort of flavor. There is little that one would consider 'normal' about this EP, and it's fair to say that nothing about it sounds stale of regurgitated. In fact, this is perhaps some of the weirdest, more far-out material that we've heard from the label, which is sort of another way to say to say that it's the oddest material on our carts this week. It ain't ambient, it's not mechanical enough to be techno, and it certainly doesn't fall under the 'bass' umbrella. What we do know is that it'll appeal to those wanting something completely different, and a range of tunes to make the crowd turn their head with disbelief. TIP!

Review: Originally released back in '91 on Naples label Underground Music Movement, Stolen Moments was the sole 12" produced by Emanuele Luzzi under the Onirico name and was picked up by the likes of Derrick May, Speedy J and Steve Rachmad. The four-track 12" has remained a curio for fans of techno from that era and now gets a timely re-issues thanks to the good people at Flash Forward. The title track is a delightful little number, full of dreamy acid and slow enough to be played in a house set and is matched by the skittering bliss of final track "Echo". Sandwiched inbetween these are two cuts that see Luzzi adhering more to the techno template of the time, and it's really not hard to see why Derrick May was dropping this when you listen to the deep futurism of "Onirico."

Review: Following the excellent Civil Duty LP, surely one of this year's best techno albums, The Corner's next release comes from its tough-talking founder Anthony Parasole. Point God finds Parasole in typically combative mood, delivering a pair of techno tracks that sound like the result of several angry studio sessions. A-side "Percutere" is satisfyingly pounding, with a looped, punk-funk style bassline and brutal kick-drums being joined by clandestine textures and restless shaker percussion. "Point God-03" has a decidedly tipsy feel, with a mind-altering melody line and spooky electronics providing a focal point. While it's just as heavy as its' predecessor, the beats shuffle, rather than bang.

Review: Even if you weren't aware of his affiliation with the long running Bleep43 collective, a brief glance at the Plant43 discography of producer Emile Facey would suggest heavy involvement in underground electro. Frustrated Funk, Semantica, Central Processing Unit and AI Records are all labels Facey's work has surfaced on and it's great to see him add the blossoming Shipwrec operation to this list with his first Plant 43 LP in some four years. Programmed to be equally suited to home listening or club play, Scars of Intransigence feels like a classic LP in the making with eight tracks of deep, rippling electro that haunt and excite in equal measures. Spend more time with the album and the undercurrent of dystopian despair does begin to seep through as Facey uses his machines to translate his dissatisfaction at ill-run governments and greedy corporations with little regard for how misused and abused Earth is becoming.

Review: This album showcases the series of heavily reggae-orientated tunes that was created throughout the past three years - starting with the landmark 'King In My Empire' with Cornel Campbell - which so far has only been available on 10" vinyl format. After the previous Burial Mix album Showcase (BMD-1, released 1998), exclusively with vocals by Paul St. Hilaire, the present release features eight tunes, voiced in Berlin, New York and Jamaica by seven artists, some of them living legends; Cornel Campbell, Paul St. Hilaire, Shalom, The Chosen Brothers, Love Joy, Jennifer Lara and Jah Batta. Released simultaneously, The Versions (BMD-3) contains the corresponding instrumental versions backed with dubs that integrate minimal structures with Rhythm & Sound's breathtaking atmospheric density. Review: Spanish imprint Subsist are back. The Valencia based operation now presents its first vinyl release and it's pretty impressive. Starting out there's the shadowy Scandinavian outfit SHXCXCHCXSH with the slow burning and greyscale noisescape of "Ssddnn" and the deconstructed industrial rave of "Psyche", there's also an appearance by Hypnus main man Ntogn with "Psyche": your serving of deeply hypnotic and cerebral groove. On the flip, label mainstays Datura Dilema present the bleepy Jeff Mills tribute "Sun Gods", while the Netherlands' Mike Storm gives us the powerful high tech soul of "Chapter 002" whose epic string section totally brings the house down.

  2. Cosmic Chords Two (9:27)
Review: The Sun God aka Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss is a difficult guy to keep up with, that's for damn sure. Spreading his signature trademark of gritty, fuzzed out pseudo-techno across so many aliases and labels, it's as if the dude is making music 24/7. For his latest excursion Mr. Moss appears as The Sun God - a tribute name to his idol Sun Ra - for Copenhagen's always-on-the-money Cejero imprint. The A-side, "Cosmic Chords One", is classic Moss with its stumbling, alcoholic drum pattern and beautifully distorted chords - one of his finest moments and surely the winner from this year, so far. The B-side, "Cosmic Chords Two" continues Moss' devious sounds but takes them onto more distant plateaus, where the beats have now fallen into place and the synths have taken a less abstract form. Warmly recommended.
