Review: Ireland's Major Problems has done a superb job with this reissue of Ability II's Pressure EP, which has long been regarded as one of the standout releases of the bleep and bass era. "Pressure", and its more lauded flipside "Pressure Dub", are timeless examples of the original "Yorkshire bleep and bass" blueprint. Both are built around speaker-ratting sub bass, the intergalactic electronics of Detroit techno, and the trippy, head-in-the-clouds aesthetics of sound system dub. This edition supplements Ability II's re-mastered 1990 originals with a fresh remix from bleep enthusiast Luca Lozano, who pushes the track a little further towards early breakbeat hardcore territory whilst retaining the bleep classic's spacey feel.

Cat: 50WEAPONS 043. Rel: 02 Nov 15
  1. Addison Groove - "Allaby" (4:36)
  2. Errorsmith - "Airbag" (5:30)
Review: Here's something to excite all those who like their dance music to come with a heavy dose of funk: a split release from 50 Weapons that boasts material from Bristol-based floor-slayer Addison Groove and scene veteran Erik "Errorsmith" Wiegand. The latter is in a combative mood, delivering a rave-friendly chunk of analogue madness that comes complete with colossal build-ups, twisted acid lines, bouncy electronics and ghetto-tech-inspired intensity. While rather good, it lacks the energy and punch of Addison Groove's contribution, the throbbing "Allaby". Typically, it sits somewhere between the relentless jack of juke, the cut-up appeal of ghetto-tech, and the rolling goodness of tech-funk. However you describe the track, it's a bit of a banger.

Review: Famously, Joey Anderson delivered the first 12" on Acid Test's experimentally minded offshoot, Avenue 66. That was Under The Cherry Moon, one of the lauded New Jersey producer's finest releases to date. Happily, Anderson's belated return to Avenue 66 is equally as impressive. There's much to admire throughout, from the rising and falling synthesizer refrains of "If One Cares, They Act Different", to the deep, mystical and wonderfully picturesque deep house thrills of B-side cut "Vase", which is undoubtedly one of Anderson's most beautiful tracks to date. The track in between, "Peace There", also impresses via metronomic kick drums, dreamy chords, and crystalline synthesizer melodies.

Review: Given the success of the first two installments of the Editions series, it's little surprise to see XDB put together a third volume for his Metrolux imprint. He's assembled another crack team of international contributors, too. Autre and Xinner join forces on opener "Nebula", a fine combination of low-slung techno drums, restless electronics and deep space sonics. Autre goes solo to deliver the fluttering, late night hypnotism of "Seiryu", before Kryptic Universe steals the show with "01309 Stairways", a superb chunk of rolling intelligent techno that features an extended ambient intro. Owen Jay and Brian James round things off with the distorted drum machine hits and woozy riffs of "Chordless" (which, to be fair, is an accurate title).

Review: Lopazz and Alex Cortex have always enjoyed a cult status with their Bad Cop Bad Cop project, and now on the eve of their debut album the pair are getting remixed from all angles. Tobias is on deadly form with his slender work on "Hilton Hihat", creating a sumptuous tapestry of interlocking melodies that weave around a crisp beat in that most trancey of techno ways. In contrast Kemetrix brings a thoroughly strange and spaced out kind of techno rumble with an industrial finish, while the B-side finds soft, enveloping dub perspectives from Group Niob and Brendon Moeller.

Review: Geir Jensson's debut album under the now familiar Biosphere alias, Microgravity, has long been considered something of a classic of the early '90s ambient boom. First released in 1991, it offered an icy but suitably atmospheric mix of chilly ambience, British-style "intelligent techno" and crystalline IDM. To celebrate 25 years since it was recorded (it was released a year later, in 1991), Geir Jensson has re-mastered it and, with the help of a successful crowd-funding campaign, pressed it onto a double CD minus the cross-fades and sound effects featured on the original pressing. Happily, Microgravity has lost none of its allure.

Review: Founded last year by Regis, James Ruskin and Juan Mendez, Jealous God's initial 'issues' fell very much within the remit of the expertly sculpted techno that the now defunct Sandwell District pioneered. However the label's focus has seemingly become a lot more open ended and willing to exploring the trio's well documented love for DIY post punk and industrial sounds and it's something that continues here with the debut of Broken English Club. The latest project from UK techno producer Oliver Ho, Broken English Club seems to be his most confident expression of his post punk and industrial influences, which have previously manifested themselves to varying degrees in the Raudive guise and his work as The Eyes In The Heat. His five track Jealous God debut features the excellent "Plastic Bag" and is complemented by a dub heavy mix CD from Taylor Burch of DVA DAMAS.

Review: Oliver Ho's Broken English Club has been a revelation of sorts since his first release appeared on Jealous God back in 2014. What's particularly impressive about this artist is how he successfully managed to align himself with all the right labels; all the right labels for his particular form of techno, including Cititrax, a label we have much love for. The man returns to Regis' and Silent Servant's Jealous God for the label's sixteenth instalment, and "Accidents & Romance" kicks the EP off with a familiarly rolling bassline that hints at the emergence of 303 tones without ever unleashing a full blockade of acid. On the B-side, "Country Life" enters the realm of nightmares thanks to sharp, bruising bass stabs and an ominous swarm of voices, leaving the foreboding elements of "Private Death" to linger in their own pool of broken drum patters and percussion shots. This is a keeper, and probably one of the best JG missiles yet!

Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Review: Boris Bunnik's debut under the Conforce moniker, Machine Conspiracy, was a little overlooked on its release back in 2011. Since then, the album has gone on to be regarded as something of a slept-on classic - a gorgeously picturesque, far-sighted and spacey trip into late night electronica shot through with dub techno and Drexciyan electro influences. Given that original copies of the album - either on CD or wax - are now fairly hard to find, it's nice to see Delsin making the album available again. Happily, the album has lost none of its' allure in the four years since, with the deep techno throb of "Subtraction", fluid hypnotism of "Machine Conspiracy" and Larry Heard-ish "Love Hate" remaining amongst Bunnik's strongest works.

Review: Modeselektor always promised that their 50 Weapons imprint would cease operations once it hit a half-century of releases. Given that this is the much-admired 42nd release, it would seem that the end is nigh. Naturally, they'll keep dancing till the bitter end, and here present two tried-and-tested floor-fillers from Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka, and Bicep. The latter's "Closing Sequence" naturally doffs a cap to rave-era sweatiness, but boasts beats, melodies and electronic textures more reminiscent of the short-lived progressive breaks sound (look it up, kids). Damage and Daneeka, meanwhile, lay down a deliciously dubby, hypnotic chunk of Germanic tech-house built around bustling, bouncy beats, relentless organ loops and shimmering, swirling synthesizers.

Review: There can be few more prolific artists than Eduardo De La Calle. The Spanish producer has released over 70 solo singles since making his debut in 2003, as well as two full-length excursions. This latest missive sees him join forces with exotic techno specialist Mtheorem for what was meant to be a special Christmas release (it was delayed at the pressing plant). A-side "Andes Echoes" is a pleasingly trippy and far-sighted affair, with vintage intelligent techno, IDM and ambient sounds (think psychedelic acid lines, dreamy chords and Detroit melodies) riding an off-kilter techno rhythm. De La Calle's love of no-nonsense drum programming comes to the fore on flipside "Kalpavriksha", which pits thunderous kick-drums and metallic hi-hat hits against woozy synthesizer motifs.

  2. Full Of Holes (XDB Dark Forces mix)
Review: Deemonlover's only two records thus far were both released this year on Bliq. The first was an impressive five-track debut Manticore and "Velcro" from that release shares the same minimal, rustling and watery quality of the A-side from this Chorozon record. "Full Of Holes" falls somewhere between a dubby Markus Suckut production and something Dario Zenker might make mixed with ambient field recordings captured from what sounds like a medina somewhere in Morocco. XDB turns in his best rework of the year with a Dark Forces mix, layering deep and woozy house chords underneath a flowing groove of sublime percussion and thrumming tom drums.

Review: With Bliq operating at a rate of roughly two 12"s per year, it's possible that this debut release from Deemonlover is the last vinyl transmission we'll see from the London-based label in 2014. If that's the case, there is plenty of mileage in the four tracks that make up the Manticore 12" and there's plenty of house and techno selectors out there that will be pulling for this record for some time yet. Fans of the Dial label will certainly find much to embrace in the buoyant yet melancholic opening track "Velcro" which engages subtle shifts in pitch. This atmospheric opener is something of a false dawn however, as Deemonlover duck between the abstract ghetto house of "J.a.a.p." and the dusty Naples style deepness of "Violet Kink" before closing on the crunching peak time techno of "Till Primals".

Review: DJ Qu - AKA New York-based producer Ramon LIsandro Quezada - has been doing his thing since the mid-2000s, delivering spacey deep house cuts that join the dots between the soulful warmth of Glenn Underground and the far-sighted futurism of Detroit techno. There's more stargazing fare to be found on his latest EP. "Raw 7" has a real sci-fi feel, with alien synths melodies and outer-space stabs riding a powerful, cymbal-driven rhythm. "Untitled (High Life)" is a little more relaxed, with picturesque electronic melodies complimenting a dense, afro-influenced house groove. It's floor-friendly enough, but positive enough for home listening, too. Finally, "Soma" is thrillingly deep, transporting listeners to the far reaches of the galaxy via endless chords and shuffling percussion.

Review: By his own prolific standards, veteran deep house/techno producer Ramon Lisandro Quezada - better known since 2005 as DJ Qu - has been rather quiet of late. Having released just one single in 2014, he returns in early 2015 with one of his strongest EPs for some time. Several bases are covered on the Redtones EP. Contrast, for example, the drifting, sci-fi chords and dense, deep house goes tribal rhythms of the title track, with the picturesque pianos and crackly samples of downtempo bonus "Sadness In The Static". Best of all, though, is "Sweaty", a formidably wonky fusion of psychedelic electronics, trippy effects and throbbing, grime encrusted house beats.

Review: The penultimate 50 Weapons release pays tribute to the music of its home town, Berlin. Oddly enough, it plays host to the first release on the label by Rodhad. The Dystopian boss delivers "Oblivion", a raw and noisy analogue workout that calls to mind the sonic extremities of Landstrumm and Vogel, realised against a stepping rhythm. However, the real highlight comes from Fjaak. This Berlin trio, who received their break thanks to releases on 50 Weapons, drop "Super Smash". The track's wailing, diva vocal, techy chords and flowing groove may not be the most innovative, but it'll go a long way to ensuring that the future of Berlin techno is safe in Fjaak's hands.

Review: New Francois X gear on the highly-rated, Paris-based Dement3d Records - and that means 'banger' alert! The techno-house producer has been missing in action for a little while, but his name strikes fear into any serious techno DJ wanting to shake things up on the floor. This time, the man starts off with the glitchy, beatless sound experiment called "Time", which acts as a sort of hors d'oeuvre to the first course that is "Unicorn Paranoia", a sinister slice of minimal techno that brings us back to the golden years of labels like Plus8. On the B-side, "The Persis-Tence Hunting" is most certainly the main meal thanks to its driving horn of a bassline, and "Vivid Dreams" ties this wormhole of an EP off with elegance and precision. Recommended.

Review: You have to admire Laurent Garnier's continued desire to push boundaries and confound critics. His plan to devote 2014 to releasing five EPs on five different labels, whilst mixing up the styles, is undoubtedly bold. This three-tracker for the ever-intriguing 50Weapons imprint is particularly impressive. "MILF" bristles with stuttering analogue rhythms, foreboding chords and attractive bleep melodies, coming on like an unlikely jam session between Sweet Exorcist and Orbital. "DSK" sees the French veteran moving further towards his techno roots, while "He" sounds like an homage to darkwave with techno overtones and more than a hint of stripped-back early Chicago acid. Bravo Monsieur Garnier, bravo!

Review: ** REPRESS ** Ever since JD Twitch rebooted Optimo Music, it's been the irregular transmissions from Glasgow act Golden Teacher that has hit the spot each and every time. The amalgamation of two diverse bands from the city -noise punk outfit Ultimate Thrush and analogue house duo Silk Cut, Golden Teacher first emerged on Optimo Music early last year with a pretty apt description of sounding like "Arthur Russell's Dinosaur L jamming with Bobby O, K Alexi Shelby, Liaisons Dangereuses and Imagination, with some voodoo drummers and Sly & Robbie". Steadily building up a reputation for some riotous live performances, Golden Teacher are a class above because they manage to distill this energy into their recorded output too. The Party People 12" features three such examples, with A Side cut "Love" the kind of production that sufferers of LCD Soundsystem withdrawal will embrace and cherish for years to come.

Review: Desolate Figures is the excellent second album from John Heckle which builds on the strong debut LP the Liverpudlian released on Mathematics some two years ago. Indeed it's possible to view Heckle's affiliation with Mathematics as a springboard to wider acclaim - Heckle's debut EP earned him an honours at last year's Qwartz Awards and he's subsequently struck out with weighty slabs of hardware driven techno for Creme Organization, Signals, Apartment and Tabernacle Records. The latter label have become something of a second home for Heckle so it's no surprise to see Desolate Figures issued through Tabernacle and the nine tracks come across as a very intense collection that demonstrate Heckle's signature sound is becoming ever more impressive!

Review: Mickael Jeanneret is Janeret, a deep house producer from Paris who now finds himself with a release on promising new Russian label Berg Audio who have previously served up the likes of iO (Mulen) and Andre Kronert. For the Kord EP, the title track is a densely layered yet sublime and rolling journey through the dub techno sound and executed tastefully. Its remix by Berlin tech house hero Diego Krause respectfully retains the dubbiness yet injects it with more groove and swagger. On the flip, "Air" ventures down a much deeper route with emotive pads and hypnotic dub chords working to great effect. The Dilated Pupils affiliated Ben Buitendijk delivers a brilliant rework, covering the track in the right amount of dust and rust like he only can.
