  2. Apprentice (6:17)
  3. Interactions (5:31)
Review: London label Pacific Command brings the heat again, this time courtesy of Vancouver act 1800HAIGHTSTREET (Lobster Theremin/Mork) who follow up some killer releases by nthng and Reflec. Starting out with the lush and deeply hypnotic "Georhythms" with its airy pads, broken beat and tribal percussion, they then get stuck into the fierce industrial techno rage of "Apprentice" which calls to mind classic Marcel Dettmann or more recently Fango. Finally, on the flip is "Interactions" which carries on with the more aggressive tendencies with its reverb and delay drenched aesthetics, creating some properly tunnelling vibes for sure-fire dancefloor impact.

  1. The Soft Bounce (Daniel Avery rework) (6:49)
  2. Third Mynd (BTU rework) (16:02)
Review: The Beyond The Wizard Sleeve project from Erol Alkan and Richard Norris finally delivered the psychedelic treat of a debut album we all knew they could this year. Having been preceded by some fine remix 12"s featuring Psychemagik and Shock Machine, Phantasy Sound pick up on the series again with a single featuring the highly-regarded talents of one Daniel Avery. The straight-faced DJ and producer turns his attentions to "The Soft Bounce," morphing the track into into a bubbly, bleep-heavy techno bullet with plenty of atmosphere and zest, whereas BTU rework "Third Mynd" into a whirlpool of sludgy outsider sonics that recall the weirder end of the Hanson Records spectrum. Fans of labels like PAN might well enjoy this little TIP!

  1. Beyond The Sequence (17:38)
  2. Beyond The Clouds (15:54)
Review: According to Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell, this live version of "Beyond the Clouds" was recorded live one evening in Tokyo where "there was a mystical element in the air, strobe lights, vaporous gas and electric dreams." It has been remastered by Bazza at Alchemy Studio London and has the classic and timeless Echospace vibe: glacial and textured, smoked/dubbed out and done like only these guys can. On the flip, the journey continues with "Beyond The Sequence", a cavernous and haunting descent into the void, assisted by sombre pads drenched liberally in delay, swimming violently through resonance and screaming gloriously through ring modulation. Proper and purist dub techno by the true masters. Pure bliss!

  2. Trudge - "Give" (6:23)
  3. Die Roh - "Her First Time" (5:51)
  4. Trudge - "Series 7" (4:20)
Review: Italy's Die Roh have come a long way since their first release for Vae Victis back in 2012 alongside Blawan, releasing plenty of militant house and techno with a rugged, analogue feel that sits just right with us. They're up on Axe Traxx this time for the label's second outing, and they're joined by newcomer Trudge. The former delivers a deep, lean deep house chugger in "Coming Out", relatively more docile than their previous material but it's still cut-throat enough to sound booming on a system and provoke a series of bodies to start moving thanks, in part, to its kinetic percussion rhythm and sublime keys. Trudge come through with "Give", a sludgy house monster with a brittle drum flex and banging toms built for destructive DJ use. On the flip of the wax plate, Die Roh are back with the funkier, more uplifting house bullet "Her First Time", but "Series 7" by Trudge is the killer on here, the shadiest house tune of them all that reminds us of Greg Beato at his very best. This is one hell of a tip - don't miss it.

  3. Esplendor Geometrico - "Rotor" (1988)
  4. Esplendor Geometrico - "Rotor" (Broken English club remix)
  5. Prostitutes - "Cuyahoga Frankenstein"
Review: The Contort Yourself tradition of electronics pioneers, modern masters and new names continues into CY003. Enrique comes under that latter banner. The Hot Releases alumnus introduces the EP with the piston pounded belligerence of Dissociate. L.I.E.S. and Nation veteran Beau Wanzer continues this stroll into aggression. Weasels is an upturned work of techno. Nuts, bolts and the grisly inner workings are on show for this fast paced floor mangler. Spain's industrial stalwarts Esplendor Geometrico open the flip. From 1988 the grit of the factory floor is carried into Rotor. A touch of the mystical is injected, chants looped through the hypnotic rhythms in this simmering classic. Broken English Club is on hand to rework Rotor into a guttering piece of Electro tainted machine music. If you're hoping for some respite, think again. Prostitutes (Diagonal) closes with the cruel pummelling percussion of Cuyahoga Frankenstein. A brutal, beefy and brilliant 12.

  5. Die Form - "Fear Of The Bloody Night" (IBM Industrial Strength Dub)
Review: After a strong first release Contort Yourself returns with "Events at the Fatal Party" which comes over more as a description than a title, brimming with a bubbling sense of tension and fear. Hamburg duo Fallbeil kick things off in impressive style with a crunchy acid monster which twists and turns followed by two killer proto-techno cuts from legendary French industrial band Die Form from their 1985 tape Hurt. Here we find ourselves in a unsettling scenario with metallic voices scowling over clanging machines and guitar feedback in an unhinged way. The mysterious Slugbug (L.I.E.S./Russian Torrent Versions) starts the flip with "GOBACK", a creeping acidic beast moving unstoppably forward as a reverberating voice ripples throughout. Any calm is then shattered by IBM a.k.a. Jamal Moss whose remix of Die Form hammers home a tough seven minutes of mangled synths, bubbling acid and thundering drums. A highly recommended, intense journey.

  1. Beneath The Skin (6:21)
  2. Trace To Nowhere (5:51)
  3. Devil May Care (5:38)
  4. Immersion (6:40)
Review: In a DJ and production career approaching two decades, Terence Fixmer's music has appeared on some real bastions of European techno - International Deejay Gigolo, Speedy J's Electric Deluxe, Prologue, CLR and Jealous God being just five. Last year saw Ostgut Ton added to that list, with the label giving the Belgian's iconic 2003 production "Aktion Mekanik Theme" a pleasantly-surprising reissue augmented by some high profile remixes (Nodge, Dettmann, Kobosil). Beneath The Skin adds further steel to that relationship and is a fine Ostgut debut for Fixmer, with the title track a devious muscle rippler of a modern EBM/techno hybrid DJ tool. Wait for those sirens to come in! "Trace To Nowhere" pairs up breathing vocals with alien-like acid squeaks over a stripped back techno patter whilst "Devil May Care" takes the lysergy into more foreboding territory. The tension eases as "Immersion" closes out the 12" on a more ambient techno tip.

A tehnodelia ramification within the Bucharest electronic scene that will host rising names like Khidja and Borusiade while introducing new characters like The Holy Fix (Camil Dumitrescu, co-member of Delusion Men) and Utopus (Ion D, producer of Steaua de Mare, Raze de Soare, Anahore?ii among others) already featured on "Sounds on the Unheard from Romania vol. 2". Review: Talk about a transformation; former Minus mainstay and minimal stalwart Marc Houle goes from ping-pong beats and hiccuping rhythms to this deep, 80s-referencing house release. " Don't Want To Watch You Read" is a mesmerising affair, centred on a booming bass and featuring a mysterious vocal that is similar to the one that featured on Brian Kage's record on FXHE earlier this year. There is a reference to Houle's minimal past on the rushing sirens of the Golden Filter remix of "Read", but in the main this is a radical departure. The title track is a pulsing electronic disco affair, while the Red Axes remix of "Read" is an epic, EBM-fueled reshape.

Second offering "Puritan" explores the same path of dystopian hypnotism in the tradition of greats like Mike Parker or Donato Dozzy; strap yourself in for this one, it's one wild journey!

Review: There's something rather endearing about this debut EP from Swiss producer Tissu. Perhaps it's the intergalactic dreaminess of Motor City inspired opener "Ground Loop", or the eyes-closed combination of bubbling acid lines, skittish machine drums, and sorrowful chords of "4 #2". Alternatively, it could be the cybernetic deep house bounce, fluid chords and restless hits of "Unnamed Vehicle", or even the chunky, undulating drums and picturesque pads of closer "Up". Most likely, it's all of these things combined. Either way, Unnamed Vehicle is a very impressive debut. If he keeps this up, we'll soon have a new techno star on our hands.

Review: Adam 'X' Mitchell is back again under the alias which essentially re-launched his career five years ago. This time his hypnotic techno excursions do not come via Chris Liebing's CLR, but rather, it's Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions serving up these two dark and sinister snapshots of his most recent work. Mitchell finds a fitting home here, given his recent forays into industrial music under the ADMX-71 alias and "Sublight Velocities" does a great job of bridging the gap between the two projects with its droning loops trancing you out nicely while the metallic beats hammer away in factory-like fashion. "Semiclassical Gravity" features a slow burning EBM style arpeggiation over doomy synth stabs while steely drum patterns smash it out with restrained violence.

Review: David Willenberger aka TRP first appeared on the scene with an EP for London's Lobster Theremin earlier this year, and we've been awaiting more of his brittle, dusty house flakes impatiently. He's here courtesy of Shall Not Fade, a young and vibrant independent with a lot confidence and flair about the way they release music, and if you're looking for some sketchy, utterly analog house music then you've come to the right spot. "Saturday Morning (Headache Mix)" is a warm, placid house gem with driving piano keys at its core; "Stash" is deeper, moodier and unleashes rolling bassline over its percussion; "Tragic Ending" is the off-kilter nugget for those wanting something a little looser; and "That Old Feeling" is a mesmerising house abstraction with an aqueous breeze floating through its mix. A quality bunch of outsider house tools.

Review: Frak man Jan Svensson has been busy of late, serving up solo singles under the Villa Abo alias for Kontra-Musik, Noise In My Head and Radio Lundberg. Here he heads home to the Borft Records imprint he set up way back in the '80s, in the process serving up two extended techno workouts. A-side "Madrid" is particularly potent, with zippy acid stabs, cyclical synth riffs and razor-sharp acid lines riding a heavy, funk-fuelled techno groove. He takes a markedly different approach on "Water Galaxy", which sounds like vintage Underground Resistance or Derrick May enjoying a breezy Swedish summer. It's much more fluid and positive than the more aggressive A-side, and arguably the pick of two top-notch cuts.

Review: Two years on from the release of his stripped-back, minimalist debut album Butterfly Effect, Shinichi Atobe returns to Demdike Stare's DDS label with World. While its' predecessor explored stripped-back techno, ambient and experimental electronica, World is an altogether more positive and melodious affair. While there are still beat-less moments of atmospheric tension, not to mention crackly, hissing grooves that bear the stylistic hallmarks of minimal techno, these are contrasted by positive lead lines, swelling chords and sun-kissed textures. Throw in a couple of more robust, hypnotic techno tracks amongst the hazy deep house and undulating ambience, and you have a set that subtly shifts Atobe's sound whilst retaining a similar sonic ethos.

Review: In honour of another successful season on the White Isle, Cocoon delivers a celebratory two-disc mix-up, with Carl Craig and Sonja Moonear at the helm. Craig handles disc one, serving up a smoothly mixed selection that fixes the starry melodiousness of Detroit, to the drowsy, big room throb of European techno. Along the way, the Motor City legend showcases killer cuts from Floorplan, DJ Deep, Chymera, Oxia and his superb remix of Agoria. On disc two, Sonja Moonear takes a slightly different approach, working her way through a hot selection of bumpin', Chicago-influenced tech-house cuts, before diving deep into the murky waters of late night techno hypnotism.

Review: Fresh from releasing Mika Vainio's Mannerlaatta OST, Joachim Nordwall's peerless iDEAL Recordings coax a new album out of Nadine and Tanya Byrne's Ectoplasm Girls project. First surfacing with the Forever Nothing tape back in 2008, the Byrne sisters were unfairly lumped in with the 'Witch house' crowd and have since kept the Ectoplasm Girls project away from the recorded format and instead developed it in a live setting. This appearance on iDEAL is something of a welcome surprise then and New Feeling Come suggests the sisters have been stealthily expanding on their sound to a most satisfying degree. Distilling elements of techno, ambient, pop and drone into a wholly enveloping ten tracks, New Feeling Come is one of those albums whose mysterious delights is further revealed with each listen.

Review: It would be fair to describe Daniel Wendler's Five O'Clock Traffic releases as "sporadic"; since dropping his debut album in 2002, he's only put out three other records of note. The fantastically named Distorted By Fantasy is his first EP for three years, and boasts nine tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. Largely wobbly, wonky and left-of-centre, much of the material takes techno in intriguing new directions. So, amongst the highlights you'll find the metronomic, pitched-down, alien fuzziness of "True Break", the Chicago acid-goes-IDM shuffle of "Jerky Movement", and the rubbery, proto-house pulse of "Coral D". Proper Borft clobber.

Even so, Hermit's Lair (Voluminous) - his 15th album in seven years - is his first full-length since 2014. In keeping with his previous output, it's a becalmed and gently rhythmic affair, with deep space pads and swirling, intergalactic electronics rubbing shoulders with gentle rhythms, and immaculately placed dub delay. Its' two discs each contain four long, subtly shifting compositions, with Barkalov inviting listeners to get lost in the hushed grooves and meditative music. It's an invitation you'd be foolish to turn down.

Michael is his debut album, and sees him showcase the breadth and diversity of his production talents. So while there are numerous techno and post-dubstep dancefloor moments dotted throughout (check, in particular, "Polyester", "Quite (Bonus Beats)", "August" and album standout "Old Habits"), these are contrasted by a variety of atmospheric downtempo moments. Some of these are woozy, dreamy and positive, while others look to darker and creepier corners for inspiration.

Schiech In China (hand-numbered hand-stamped LP limited to 300 copies)
Cat: VIS 002. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. Track 1 (9:46)
  2. Track 2 (6:49)
  3. Track 3 (3:25)
  4. Track 4 (22:14)
Review: Germany's Hafenschlamm rekords were the first to pick up Scheich In China, a mysterious noise artist who likes to steer his distorted experimental sketches onto more technoid terrains, but it's Nina and Tobias Dufner's excellent V I S label who press him up on vinyl this time around. "Track 1" is pure evil, a fuzzy amalgamation of grainy sonics powered forwards by a pulsating pseudo kick drum that sounds like the end of days, but the energy dissipates and melts into a whirlpool of glitches on "Track 2". "Track 3" sounds like a ritualistic tribal dance for the devil, and "Track 4" manages to create concrete slabs of movement and melody out of howling licks of noise. It's a challenging listen, but one that both techno and noise aficionado will surely be drawn to.

Review: Tale of Us launch their Afterlife label in style with the Realm of Consciousness compilation. Bringing together some of the best-known names in contemporary techno as well as a group of newcomers, it moves effortlessly between esoteric moods. Tale of Us contribute the ambient intro, while Monoloc and Woo York are both in more mellow form than usual on the melodic "Phoenix" and "Poseidon" respectively. Meanwhile, Recondite contributes the sad melodies and throbbing bass of "Murphy's Law" and Locked Groove balances supernaturally beautiful hooks with powerful bass pulses on "Emeralds". Even more dance floor-focused tracks, like Obscure Shape & SHDW's "Die Wiederkehr", are filled with trancey melancholia.
