  2. Damon Lamar - "Rising Sun" (7:57)
  3. Claro Intelecto - "Signifier" (6:19)
  4. Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

Review: London label Pacific Command brings the heat again, this time courtesy of Vancouver act 1800HAIGHTSTREET (Lobster Theremin/Mork) who follow up some killer releases by nthng and Reflec. Starting out with the lush and deeply hypnotic "Georhythms" with its airy pads, broken beat and tribal percussion, they then get stuck into the fierce industrial techno rage of "Apprentice" which calls to mind classic Marcel Dettmann or more recently Fango. Finally, on the flip is "Interactions" which carries on with the more aggressive tendencies with its reverb and delay drenched aesthetics, creating some properly tunnelling vibes for sure-fire dancefloor impact.

I See What You Did There (limited 1-sided purple marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: SSPS 3. Rel: 27 Jun 16
  1. I See What You Did There (9:25)
Review: Nijmegen label Shipwrec have been in fairly imperious form this year, canvassing the spectrum of electro for some fine sounding and even-finer-looking records. Washington State artist Chris Roman issued his second 214 album on Shipwrec last year and returns here for "I See What You Did There", the first of several singles to arrive over the coming months - Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk and Lunar Disko also have records in the works with him. Taking shape as a one track 12" for the latest in Shipwrec's Silk Screen Printed Series, "I See What You Did There" snaps and throbs in all the right places across its nine minutes but is tempered with a sense of emotive contemplation that lends it some extra depth.

Review: Frustrated Funk, Shopwrec and Central Processing Unit are just some of the quality labels on which the enigmatic 214 has delivered his wayward strains of electro and techno. This new single for Lunar Disko is straight-up, high calibre business, as per usual, starting with the mesmerising pads and alluring soundscapes of "The Breakfast Club", a beat-driven escapade through a wave of majestic synths. "Lunar Landing" is more on the Dutch electro side of things, thanks to its sub-aquatic beats and general demeanour while, on the flip, "Jade" injects some Chicago house live through an industrial filter, and "Hurley" liquifies its synths down to a thick pool of sonics and subtle beats. Gorgeous music.

Review: Tripping back to 2005/4 on a raw, machine funk flex, Dope Jams track back over Todd Mullinix's earlier chapters with two immense slabs of future tech. First up, his 2AM/FM project with D'Marc Cantu with "Poison Dart" a gritty late night Berlin lazer-fest. It's followed by the wily, unpredictable data charges on "Bizarre Carnival" on which you can almost hear the machines hissing in meltdown. This is what flashbacks were invented for.

  3. O Tom Potom S.T (6:16)
Review: Last year, it was unofficially announced that Serbian musical misfit Nenad Markovic (AKA the snappily-named 33.10.3402) had delivered an album to L.I.E.S. While we're still waiting for that set, this 12" marks the experimental techno and ambient producer's third EP for Ron Morelli's prolific imprint. He begins in predictably creepy, otherworldly fashion, effortlessly blending backwards percussion, snatched field recordings, heavy bass and ghostly electronics on epic A-side "100 Drone Radio Passive Scape". Things get a little more upbeat on B1 cut "No Decline A (121 Roland MC303), where manipulated, acid-style electronic lines rise and fall over a metronomic kick-drum. Meanwhile, Markovic's innate ability to turn experimental productions into atmospheric ambient classics is once again showcased on closing track "O Tom Protom ST".

  1. Slow Port (8:19)

Review: Andrew Hogge aka Lovefingers has been going strong thanks to his ESP Institute label, an imprint made up of outside thinkers such as Nenad Markovic aka 33 10 3402 and his distinctly singular brand of psychedelic techno. This is the third chapter of the Mecanica series, possibly named from and inspired by Beppe Loda's infamous mixtapes of Afro-industrial percussion disco, and "Slow Port" starts things off with a gloriously slow-burning groove filled with intricate percussion chops and slices - a true jewel! "Plutonium Certainly" is as mad as its name suggests - a mass of low frequencies and broken hi-hats dominating its structure - and "Elika" is a more docile ambient work which dives head-first into the ether...and so should you!

Review: 62nd Cell may be a new name, but the producer behind it, David Campbell, boasts a discography that stretches right back to the tail end of the 1980s. He's perhaps most famous for his early '90s work for General Production Recordings and R&S under the Hi-Ryze and Autonation aliases. The six tracks showcased here vary in style, drawing influence from original Detroit techno, electro (see the fantastically heavy and spacey "April Fool's Day"), IDM, and even dusty, ambient house era hip-hop (sub-heavy closer "Bluestuff"). We're particularly enjoying the bleep and bass meets carnival techno brilliance of "Get Out", but to be honest it is all pretty darn good.

Review: Salt Mines is a vinyl only outfit from Melbourne, Australia that's headed by Shedbug & Rudolf C. Following up Phlowgod's 20092 EP, their latest offering is by Amsterdam's 92 Spacedrum Orchestra: who debuted on the label's two previous various artist samplers. It's more of the same quality you'd expect from this mysterious producer/s right here. On the A side, we've got the rusty retro jack of "Metro 53", its deep and emotive groove covered in a sheen of saturation and hiss that'll appeal to fans of the Lobster Theremin sound. It's an even deeper and sexier affair on the title track next, with its hypnotising chords overdriven for dramatic effect and soaring over bumpy bass and ultra compressed drums. On the flip, there's the early '90s Chicago house of "ML4U" but it's all about the Route 8 "After Hours mix" where the Budapest producer streamlines the groove into a deeper and mellower affair for the afterhours.

  3. Hymns - "Route Acid" (6:06)
  4. TUC - "4x5_83x2" (6:40)
Review: Aussie imprint Salt Mines made something of an impact with their debut release, a multi-artist EP that offered a distinctive take on the dreamy, head-in-the-clouds world of ambient-leaning, analogue deep house. This follow-up is every bit as enjoyable. There's a wonderfully spacey, loved-up feel about the intelligent techno electronics, tactile pads and hissing drum machine hits of 92 Spacedrum Orchestra's "Raw Bass (Dub 1)", while TV Out sneakily combines the new age haziness of Hashman Deejay, with the rolling grooves of Chez Damier style deep house on "Always Anyways". Hymn's "Route Acid" sounds like an unlikely jam session between Global Communication, Larry Heard and Psychik Warriors Ov Gaia, while TUC's sublime, ultra-deep "4x5_83x2" feels like a long lost, early '90s ambient techno masterpiece.

Review: The shady, provocative artist who goes by the name of 99Letters is back with a selection of mesmerising techno-not-techno tracks for the young and audacious Dalmata Daniel label. As with the rest of this producer's music, these jittery, improvisational outsider tunes have got the sound of the cassette hiss very much at the forefront of the mix, and you can almost hear the cogs of those reel-to-reels turning gloriously. "Neo Life" is a pallid, dreamy stratosphere of beats and pads, but the lead tune "Untold Future" is where we really begin to hear 99Letters' style, that dubby, hazy kind of techno that travels on the borders of dance music and electronica. "Cooper" is similarly washed-out, except that here the beat arrangement has got more in common with electro than tech, while "Neo Life (TRP dub)" is a solid, acid-ridden squelcher with a magnificent layer of distortion and analogue funk.

  4. A Rashim & H Bergqvist - "Tales Of Ordinary Madness" (5:18)
Review: While we obviously respect and adore the likes of Adam Beyer or even Skudge, the Swedish house and techno scene has been lacking new, young talent over the past five years. There is clearly no problem in the more mainstream department, but cities like Stockholm have not produced the same sorts of scenes such as, say, other towns like Bergen or Oslo. The Trouble In Paradise crew are set to resolve this issue, however, and they have certainly started this mission on the right foot. Now on their third release, an alluring collaborative effort from the young label's main members and associates, the imprint must continue its path to glory if they are to make a real mark. "My Cartoons" by A Philstrom is capable of such a feat thanks to its understated yet ridiculously effective Chicago roll, a bubbly, pseudo acid cut that can be left on repeat for hours, and the same goes for the equally raw and organic techoid sounds of "Deraling" from Noah Gibson. The B-side is graced by the excellent "Hydro RMX", a lo-fi techno swarmer from D-Man that reminds is of Neil Landstrumm's wacky excursions, and finishes off with the equally excellent "Tales Of Ordinary Madness" by, yes, Abdulla Rashim under the 'A Rashim' moniker, and H Bergqvist. This is pure class - don't miss it!

Review: To date Paul du Lac's Bio Rhythm has focussed solely on issuing current music, lacing it's discography with some fine records from Villa Abo, Hieroglyphic Being, Tevo Howard and more. This latest release offers a distinct deviation as '80s New Beat curio "Shall I Do It?" by Dirk De Saever's project The Thunder Orchestra is reissued alongside a pair of recuts from the modern day edit master Mick Wills. The story goes du Lac caught Wills playing "Shall I Do It?" during one of his specialist DJ sets and the wheels were set in motion to grant it a new edition on Bio Rhythm. The original, a strange and undeniably foreboding slab of new beat, is complemented well by the pair of Wills reconstructions that toughen up the bottom end in a manner that will delight the more adventurous DJs out there.

Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

Review: Yes, we were just thinking exactly the same thing: Shlomi Aber on Nonplus? But yes, it's actually for real. The Israeli tech house master known for such clever titles as Chicago days, Detroit Nights and the producer for Gel Abril among others, is trying something different and indeed using Boddika's label as a platform. "Takeover" is dark, peak time tech house, somewhat different from what you'd expect from him but similar all the same. It's "Street Works" where the real surprise is at; a cyclical and stomping peak technocut that sounds like something on Klockworks. Interesting developments yet in this famed producer's career.
