** DEATH OF RAVE REPRESS ** Powell's releases for Diagonal Records have turned him into something of a cult figure straddling the divide between industrial, post-punk and techno, and for good reason - his music is quite unlike anything being made by anyone else right now. His new record for The Death Of Rave is easily his best material to date. "A Band" is the kind of chugging punk-funk stomper that you could imagine turning up on a mix of 80s obscurities selected by Trevor Jackson, while "Acid" is quite simply an arcane, beatless slice of wobbling drone. "Rider" sounds like a reassembled Suicide track working on two different tempos at the same time, its ambient background buzz somewhere between bad recording, while "Oh No New York" is somewhere between no-wave rock and Musique concrete, as electronic squeals bubble up behind a relentlessly driving guitar-based groove.
