It's been four years since Avi Buffalo released his debut, which brought a palpable freshness to a distinctly American strain of indie rock. At Best Cuckold takes the same virtues that elevated the work of frontman and songwriter Avi Zahner-Isenberg above that of his contemporaries-namely a brittle delicacy of delivery, hazy soft-focus atmosphere and melodic nous that lodges his songs in the forefront of the consciousness-and builds on them in stirring style. Mercurial, melancholic and effortlessly memorable, this second platter is bound to appeal to fans of the plaintive psychedelia of latter-day Flaming Lips as it is those of the well-heeled pop song craft of The Shins, yet possesses a zesty elan all its own.
