The Club Scam EP was first released way back in 1993, before Anthony 'Shake' Shakir had established himself as one of Detroit techno's most unique voices. In fact, the EP is most notable for the bumpin' deep house style - an amalgamation of Chicago, New York and New Jersey influences - that dominates. It's interesting that Shakir quickly moved away from this style, as all four tracks here - freshly re-mastered and reissued - still sound great. Of course, there are some Motor City touches - see the razor-sharp synth strings on "The Ying & Yang (Frictional Mix)" and the restless energy of and "French Kiss" swing of "My Mantra" - but they're very slight. In fact, it's the most joyous celebration of house culture, "That's What I Want (A Mix)", that really stands out.
